OF BOSTON COMPETITION

Newcombe Pointe and Campanella Landing recognize Nashua’s population as looking for roots in times of transition. The project seeks to welcome a broad audience, from migrant workers to growing families who can find transition in terms of space, financial stability, and community. The project’s range of unit sizes and typologies allows for a multitude of community needs to be met at a range of affordability across the two sites of the project. The project also recognizes the dire need for affordable housing in Nashua and seeks to introduce appropriate density while being mindful of existing contextual scales.

Modular Construction

Ground Floor Experience

The ground floor acknowledges the different needs and qualities of West Hollis and Beech St. The main entrance faces West Hollis and is recessed from the sidewalk, separated from the busy vehicular traffic by landscaping and shaded by the upper floors. Increased ceiling height and glazing on the North side

gives the interior space access to natural light, as well as visual connection and care to the pedestrian road. The introduced crosswalk and parking entrance on West Hollis slows down vehicular traffic and provides a safer and attended pedestrian experience around the building. The ground floor features a prominent corner community room of 500 SF.

Connection to Greenery

Landscape elements are employed to provide a pleasant frontage and ground floor experience for the residents and pedestrians. Trees along the site walk activate the usage of the ground floor by screening the interior and exterior with a layer of translucency.

Complementing the stormwater management strategy, the planting helps to capture and infiltrate rainwater, reducing the risk of onsite flooding while increasing the area of permeable surfaces.

At 616 sq ft, the one bedroom unit prioritizes functionality and space optimization, featuring a large kitchen and comfortable living area. Ample natural light floods through large windows and a juliette balcony, creating a welcoming ambiance. Additionally, the thoughtful layout ensures seamless flow between the different areas, enhancing the overall functionality and livability of the space.

Two Bedroom (Above)

At 772 sq ft, the two bedroom unit is designed with small families in mind, featuring a dining room flooded with natural light from large windows and a juliette balcony. The design maximizes space and includes six storage closets, balancing comfort with functionality. Overall, the thoughtful design and practical amenities of the two-bedroom unit offer an inviting and ergonomic living space that caters to the needs and preferences of many families.

Three Bedroom (Left)

At 900 sq ft, the three bedroom unit features a large central living area that is naturally lit from large windows and a juliette balcony, creating a bright and airy atmosphere that elevates the overall comfort of the unit. Furthermore, the inclusion of multiple bathrooms ensures convenience and privacy for residents, enhancing the functionality and appeal of this affordable housing option. This unit harmonizes private spaces with the communal, making it an ideal choice for individuals and families seeking a blend of privacy and sociability in their living arrangements.

Ground Floor Experience

With its direct adjacency to the community garden and bike path in the front, the townhomes are seamlessly integrated into the fabric of the neighborhood, offering the residents easy access to outdoor amenities and recreational opportunities. The location and position of the townhomes grants the residents a sense of connection to the community that is seen missing in the neighborhood.

Easily accessible community gardens and playgrounds add value to the experience of townhome ownership. Additionally, the townhomes overlook the community garden in front to provide attentive care. The existing fence, trees, and tentative landscaping shield the front entrances from the tire shop and the gas station. The back side of the townhomes is further separated from the public, ensuring a sense of privacy from the commercial activities.

Respect to Context

The townhomes maintain 3 stories to ensure continuity from the main street through the neighborhood. The 3 story self-imposed limit also limits any impact of shadows or loss of views onto neighboring properties.

BOTANICAL RESEARCH FACILITY - WMAIA/ PELLA SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION - SPRING 2023

This project proposes a Botanical Research Facility to reinvigorate the changing needs of Downtown Los Angeles’ historic public flower market. It is an eight-story mid-rise building with mixed use programming on the lower two levels, and private botanical research laboratories and offices on the upper levels.

In a building of scientific breakthroughs, the design provides spaces for informal gathering to encourage collaboration and exchanges beyond the labs and offices. A language of splitting was utilized in both plan and section. By splitting the building’s upper floor massing into two wings, an open green space was created between them, which simultaneously works to connect them. The use of ramps helps to create double height spaces and active social workspaces in a lively and buzzing column. The expressive, adjustable facade provides proper shading for labs and offices, and is a dynamic addition to the streetscape.

MULTI-FAMILY HOUSING

The concept for this project was to promote creative design thinking about the site-housing link from a productivity perspective. In the context of this particular studio project, productivity is defined as the utilization of the diverse cultural, economic, and natural resources present on and surrounding the site.

These resources are employed to support low-income inhabitants’ housing expenses and foster a sense of personal and communal identity. We examined several dwelling typologies in order to understand how other individuals have tackled housing difficulties. additionally made a pitch based on all of the information about the area and a program that will meet their requirements.

THE GATHERING AT MAPLE

The Reconstruction of the Prime Location in Downtown Tempe project presents an exciting opportunity to transform an underutilized site into a vibrant and dynamic mixed-use space that enriches the urban experience. The project aims to revitalize a prime urban location by reconstructing an existing site while preserving its identity and enhancing its vibrancy. Situated amidst bustling commercial and residential areas, the site holds immense potential to become a dynamic hub for various activities.

Inspired by the efficient spatial organization of the Original Moriyama House, the project seeks to optimize space utilization and attract diverse users, including visitors, workers, and students, to maximize profitability and ensure future adaptability. The concept is to create a space - fulfill the needs, create a dynamic and vibrant place, build a central courtyard for users with severing functions around it.
