/ Editor’s Note / I was standing in our booth at Magnolia Festival when Manya Barnett came up and said, “ you need to do a story on our coffee group!” Over the years, I have found that stories that people bring to us are the best stories, so I jumped on it right away. Our photographer, Heather Warden, and I had a blast meeting the McDonald’s group and hanging out with them. If you want to make a half-dozen new friends, I encourage you to visit them one weekday morning at 8 a.m. I always love the flower show at the Civic Center. I enjoy seeing the beautiful flowers. As someone with a decidedly brown thumb, I am in awe of the talent and work that goes into the plants, as well as the creativity that goes into the other exhibits. Next month will be a busy one for the city, as school starts back and municipal elections are held, but we have some awesome stories already planned for the issue, so I can’t wait for you all to see it. Stay cool (maybe check out the Splash Pad–the kids on pages 32-35 make it look like the best way to cool off).

The annual North End Council of Garden Club’s Flower Show–a joint venture between three north Jefferson County clubs. This year, the theme for the show was “Discover Gardendale.” Fran White, chairperson for the event, said that they wanted to honor the city that always hosts them and helps make the show possible. Each category was named for a significant Gardendale place, person or group. The show, which is the largest in the state, featured 290 horticulture pieces across a variety of categories. The three clubs–Blue Star, Garden Dale and Magnolia–all work throughout the year to ensure the event stays the largest by constantly encouraging gardening in the community. But the show has other competitions, such as artwork made with garden items, birdhouses decorated according to the theme, table settings, etc. all with a flower theme. “We always do a memorial table. for the people who passed away,” White explained. “One of our clubs goes to a school–the third grade–once a month, and does plants with them, and // Continued on Page 12 //

are working trying to get some younger members in there.”
the 22 kids entered their plants. So we always like for them to do one, and we also have raised beds with them.”
White said she has seen plants and gardening close generation gaps, because people of all ages have memories of family gardens or an interest in growing things themselves.
Recruiting new members and spreading the love and knowledge of different types of plants is one of the main goals of the council. She remembers when she first got involved in the clubs after being invited to a meeting by another member. “She invited me to come to her garden club and Warrior, and the next thing I know, I’m a National Flower Show judge and doing the flower shows, all within six years. Well, maybe because, at 65, I was the spring chicken. That’s one of the problems a lot of the people are starting to age out, so we [ 12 ] July 2025 Gardendale Magazine
“Some of the men who exercise at the Civic Center came in this morning and they said, ‘Oh, this horticulture reminds me of my mom,’ and they would go through and look at the plants,” White said. “Then my niece is 30, and she came by yesterday, and she says, ‘I love all this.’ So you hit all these different ages by having a flower show and exposing them.” Planning for next year’s show is already underway and all three clubs are accepting new members. Sharing Life Over Coffee STORY BY RACHEL DAVIS KARR If you’ve ever had a coworker that you were close to because you saw each other every day, learned about them and got to know them and the people in their lives, you know exactly how involved you can get in the lives of the people around you all the time. Every weekday morning, a group of area residents gather at McDonald’s in Gardendale. For decades, a group has gathered at the location to sip coffee and share their lives–trials, triumphs and everything in between. They know each other’s stories, their family members, and so much more after years of seeing each other virtually every day. // Continued on Page 16 //

// Continued from Page 14 // “We’ve prayed for each other, we’ve cried together, we’ve gone to funerals together, loved each other and been happy for each other when everybody had grandchildren,” group member, Mary Baker said. “One thing that has kept us all together is that many of us have lost a spouse.” “There used to be a lot more of us, but we’re just about all gone,” Judy Creed said. “When I first came, it was two ladies that lived here…We just started getting together. We don’t call ourselves anything, we just call it ‘going to McDonalds.’ But it gives purpose to our lives. We look after each other.” “I just enjoy the camaraderie,” group member Eddie Gardner said. McDonald’s manager Yolanda Cole met the group when she took over the location five years ago. They were all immediately fast friends. A photo of the group from shortly after Cole took over the location even hangs on the wall near the registers. “They are just a breath of fresh air and sunshine,” Cole said. “They always bring joy. They are so nice and friendly. We care about them and they care about us.”

The group and the restaurant staff also celebrate Christmas and birthdays together. “They take care of us and we take care of them,” group member Manya Barnett said. The years have also seen members of the group come and go. Many previous regulars have passed away, and while they are still missed, the remaining group remains connected. “Since we’ve lost people we’ve gotten closer together,” Cole said. Barnett is the unofficial head of the group, according to Creed. “She’s the leader of the group,” Creed said. “She has all our telephone numbers in her phone, and she checks on all of us.” For anyone interested in joining the group, you can find them Monday through Friday at McDonalds at 8 a.m.

Manya Barnett Manya Barnett is a clown. Literally. She dresses up as a clown, named “Razzle” (and sometimes with a partner named “Dazzle”). She also sometimes dresses up as characters at McDonald’s and, every Christmas, she dresses up as Mrs. Claus. Mostly she just likes to see people smile. “I’ve met so many people,” Barnett said. “I just love people.” For a decade she worked as a crossing guard at Bragg Middle School, protecting kids and families during drop off and pick up. “I was there for 10 years, in the same spot,” Barnett said. “Then ten years ago, they moved me. And I missed my kids so bad that I could not stand it. So I worked up there for two days and took my stuff and told them to have a nice day. Because I raised those kids. I stayed in the bed crying for two weeks. My husband said ‘You’ve got to get out of that bed, and get over this.’ It was hard.” But, during her time as a crossing guard, she stumbled across the McDonald’s group, so she began to attend regularly. When she isn’t dressing up or meeting friends for coffee, Barnett loves to fish. “I’m a big fisherman,” she said.

She travels around the area, and even to Florida to fish. She and her husband of more than 50 years often travel together for these fishing excursions. “My husband doesn’t fish, but he’ll take me anywhere I want to go,” Barnett said. He’ll fix the rods if they break. That’s why I take him.” She also values time with her daughter, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. “I’m all the time doing something,” she laughed.

Eddie Gardner Eddie Gardner loves to tell the story of how he and his wife met. “I was in Vietnam, and a friend of mine, he came back from R&R in Hawaii, he had her address,” Gardner explained. “He gave it to me, and I started writing to her. I wrote her from October until February. We wrote each other every single day. I got a letter every day and she got a letter every day. I had never met her, I had just seen pictures.” Then the day approached that the couple would finally meet “So I called her and told her ‘I’ll be there on the 28th to see you,’ Gardner said. “She got to praying about it, and she said ‘if he’s meant to be, he’ll come a day early.’ I did. I went into the airport and came down the corridor and she was out on the telephone talking to her sister. She said ‘he hasn’t gotten here yet.’ Though they had never met, the couple spotted each other as he walked toward the phones and that was all it took. “She dropped the phone and grabbed me,” Gardner said with a laugh. “Her nephew was with her, and he picked up the phone. Her sister said, “‘Has he got there yet?’ And, he said, ‘He must have, because they’re kissing.’ We’ve been married 56 years now.”

They have two daughters, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A fall in 2007 left his wife in a wheelchair, but they remain as committed to each other as when they first met. What’s the secret? Gardner said it’s not always easy, but it’s simple. “Just love each other and pray for each other,” he said. “We’ve had our ups and downs, don’t get me wrong on that, but that’s the only way you can do it.”

Judy Creed Judy Creed has been attending the group longer than the others. She has been coming almost daily for the last 18 years. She had been part of another similar group in Forestdale and thinks it’s a valuable for her and her friends. “It gives purpose to our lives,” Creed said. “We look after each other.” She grew up in Westwood and remains involved in Westwood Baptist Church as the church family searches for a new building or decides to merge with another church. Before she retired, she worked at Birmingham Southern College. “I was the president’s administrative assistant for Neal Berte, and then, after he retired, I stayed for a year with David Pollick, the new president,” Creed said.

Since retiring, she has stayed busy, particularly after losing her husband, David, in 2007 to multiple sclerosis.
She also travels when she has time, she especially enjoys traveling out west to visit her granddaughter in Arizona.

Bill Fortner Bill Fortner is a familiar face to most of Gardendale, but many people may not realize he is an accomplished author of books related to things he saw and experienced while serving in the Air Force and Navy and then as an employee of the federal government. He’s lost count of how many books he’s written, but he knows something about the one he’s working on now. “I don’t know, but this is my last one,” Fortner said. “It’s about my 94 years in America—how we saved Italy from the Communists, how we saved Huntsville from Houston and how they tried to fire 17 of us and then lied to us.” Fortner says that he relies heavily on his memory when writing these books, which he insists is still sharp at 94 years old. “I have a great memory,” Fortner said. “I remember things from when I was 2 years old. And I don’t just remember, it’s like I’m watching it on tv.” He often regales the group with stories of his time in the service, as well as when

he worked for the IRS and seized some interesting assets. Some of his favorite stories involve seizing sports team assets, multimillion dollar houses and more. Fortner’s wife, Elizabeth, died in 2017, after 62 years of marriage. They shared four children, two grandchildren and the family is now expecting a new great-grandchild.

Jimmy Bailey Jimmy Bailey has called Gardendale home for all of his 90 years, so when he was asked what brought him to the group, he had an answer ready. “I live a block from here, they came to me,” Bailey said, with a laugh. “I was here first.” But, on a serious note, Bailey said the group has helped him in more ways than one. The former transportation broker made a career out of talking to people, so the group is a good outlet for him. “I like their company, and now that I live alone, I get bored,” Bailey said. “It’s good to talk to people. Sometimes you talk to people and you learn things.” “I was sitting here one time, and one of my friends was sitting here–Kermit Dooley–he used to come here,” Bailey remembered. “He said he was getting a new roof because a neighbor told him he needed a new roof because of hail damage. Kermit said ‘I didn’t know I needed it, but insurance paid for it.’ So I said ‘come over to my house, that hail might have torn my roof up too.’”

When it was all said and done, four different houses got new roofs all paid for by their insurance. “If I hadn’t been up here and talked to Kermit, I would have been out $10,000,” Bailey said. It’s just an example of how the group looks out for each other and shares knowledge.

Mary Baker When Mary Baker and her husband moved to Gardendale in 1995 from Illinois, she wanted to be close to family. “We moved here because my son went to UAB on scholarship to play basketball for Gene Bartow,” Baker remembers. “Then my daughter moved here, got married and started having babies, so we moved here to be closer to the grandkids.” Just ten years after the move, her husband Howard passed away, leaving her to build a new life. She did ministry at Covenant Place for 19 years–visiting residents and spreading the word of God. “We saw some people there who had never been saved,” Baker remembers. “One lady there, from Fultondale, every time I went in, she was sitting in the corner looking sad, and I went in and put my arm around her and was able to lead her to Jesus. From then on, whenever I went in, there was a smile on her face.” She is also an active member of Enon Baptist Church.

“I’m just active all the time,” Baker said. “I just try to keep things going. I love flowers, and I have a lot of flowers at my house. I have zinnias, because there are all different kinds– there is pink and yellow and all different colors that you can cut a bouquet. Sometimes I go to Lowes and try to rescue some of them that have been forgotten on the shelf, and try to bring them back to life.”

Easy Yellow Squash Casserole As soon as the first few yellow squash in my garden get big enough to pick, the first thing I make is my Easy Yellow Squash Casserole. It’s a small-batch recipe, perfect for empty-nesters like us because we don’t always need a big ol’ 13x9 casserole… or leftovers for a week. This scaled down version is still full of tender squash and melty cheese topped with buttery breadcrumbs. If you have more in your family or need a covered dish for a potluck or reunion, just double the ingredients and get out that big casserole dish! The baking time will be the same. INGREDIENTS 1 pound fresh yellow squash (about 4 medium) (4 cups sliced) 1 medium onion, sliced 2 medium to large eggs (Our son shares their farm eggs with us!) ½ cup whole milk or 2% milk or half and half 1 cup shredded Cheddar or Colby Jack cheese ½ teaspoon garlic salt 1 cup fresh breadcrumbs, divided (or ⅔ cup dried breadcrumbs or crushed Ritz crackers) 2 to 3 tablespoons melted butter

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 350F° degrees.

Slice the squash about ¼-inch thick. If some of the squash is large, cut those slices in half.
Stir in 2 tablespoons of the fresh or dry breadcrumbs. (This helps to slightly thicken the creamy “sauce”.
Slice the onion into ¼-inch circles, then in half crosswise and break them apart. Cut them even a little smaller, if you like.
When cool enough to touch, pat the squash and onion dry with paper towels to remove the moisture. Then, add them to the egg mixture.
Place the squash and onion in a medium-size pot and add enough water to almost cover them. (You can also steam them with a steamer basket.) Cover and bring them up to a boil. Cook 5 minutes or just until they have softened slightly. They will continue to soften and cook when baked in the casserole.
Pour the squash mixture into an 8x8-inch baking dish or 1 ½-quart casserole dish that has been greased with butter or coated with oil spray.
Drain well in a colander.
Add melted butter to the remaining breadcrumbs. I usually use my fingers to gently mix in the butter. Lightly sprinkle the buttered breadcrumbs over the squash mixture.
Meanwhile, whisk the eggs in a medium-size bowl with a fork or whisk. Gradually stir in the milk, then

In part because of the variety of duties that come with his job and in part because he finds joy in serving his community.
comes in, they find it very easy to connect with people…If I don’t go to church on a day that I’m supposed to be there, I’ve got at least three text messages like, ‘hey, where are you? Are you okay? Are you good?’ And that’s that’s so important in that age group, too, to feel included.”
“I love just interacting with people,” Anderson said. “You know, like, coming out here and getting [the Splashpad] running. When you turn it on at 10 o’clock and all the kids get all excited and everything. I love that.That’s probably my favorite part about what I do.”
Anderson also loves basketball, he played in high school and coaches a travel ball team each year. “I just try to pour into other people, and minister and just give God the glory,” Anderson said. “It’s just a great way to interact with the next upcoming generation and kind of pour back into them since, you know, you’ve already poured so much of your time into playing ball.”
His least favorite part of the job? “Probably weed eating on a hill in 100-degree weather,” he laughed. He is also a Marine Corps. Reservist, a podcaster and active in his church and community outside of work. Being a Christian is a top priority for Anderson, but he knows the challenges of being a Christian in his early 20s, and that they are not isolated to him. He hosts “A Jar of Life” podcast with his friend Jonah Ross, focused on living as a Christian as young men. “We use this on our social media for good, whereas, you know, a lot of times in today’s age, social media is used for negative connotations or things of that, and we just want to be a positive outlet,” Anderson explained.
In the future, Anderson hopes to be able to keep doing the things he is doing and do even more. He is also active in his college and young adult group at Gardendale First Baptist, called SUB25. They make sure to welcome new visitors and follow up with them to make sure they feel supported and included in church–something he thinks makes it easier for them to keep coming back. “It’s just a really good group of people,” Anderson said. “We all love each other, we pour in each other. Whenever someone new
“I plan on going back to college at some point, maybe play some college basketball, Anderson said. “Right now, if you had to ask me what I would want to do in the future, it’d probably be teaching and being a basketball coach, but I couldn’t tell you that for certain. I’ve also thought about things like being a physical therapist. Anything in that realm where I’m helping athletes achieve whatever they want to achieve.”

Officer Terry Crumpton retires Officer Terry Crumpton served 20 years with the Birmingham Police Department before joining the Gardendale Police Department in 2008. According to a post on the department’s Facebook page, “During Officer Crumpton’s time with Gardendale Police Department he has been invaluable not only to our department but to our community. He has participated in the Special Olympics and is a member of the Gardendale Civitan Club along with countless other civic-minded projects. “He is truly a public servant. His ability to make you laugh in some of the toughest situations is a gift and he will be missed throughout the hallways of the Gardendale Police Department as well as around our community and in our local businesses.”
Bagwell sworn in as council member Tim Bagwell was appointed to fill Bryan Knox’s seat as the new representative for District 1. Tim will finish out the remainder of Knox’s term which ends in early November.
Knox Resigns as council member, takes reins of Civic Center Bryan Knox resigned as City Council representative for District 1 in order to accept the position as Civic Center Director, replacing Keith Mosley who recently retired.

We take food only if it is not outdated and not opened.
Historical Museum Hours The Kermit E. Dooley Gardendale Historical Museum (170 Bell Street) will be open to the public every Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The museum is maintained and operated by the Gardendale Historical Society.
