for Hoover's future. Described as a mover and shaker for the city, Faye was committed to bringing new business to the area and passionate about seeking growth for her beloved hometown. Inspired by the women’s-only Hoover Service Club, where she was a founding 8 Enjoy Hoover September/October 2026
member, and by the Vestavia Belles, Faye launched the Dogwood Belles program with 11 girls, ranging from freshmen to seniors in high school. Today, Faye’s vision for the official city hostesses and ambassadors includes 91 Belles, all high school juniors and seniors and all residents of Hoover, who serve
FEATURE the city through thousands of hours of community service each year. While you’ve likely attended an event where the Belles lent a helping hand, it’s also likely they may not have been in their signature dresses. Barbara Henry, a long-standing member and chair of the Hoover Belles Leadership Committee, shared that when the girls volunteer, whether for the SEC Championship, summer camps, or charitable consignment sales, they are expected to provide hands-on support. As a result, about 90% of the events they serve call for more casual attire. But there is something special about that dress. While Belles choose which events to volunteer for, they are always quick to sign up for those that require them to wear their dress! “They like to get dressed up and tell us often that they feel like a princess,” said Jennifer Cotney, a Hoover Belle Leadership Committee member. “The dresses bring femininity, grace, and a picture of southern hospitality.” For the Belles, southern hospitality also means having strong character and pride in yourself by presenting yourself with polish and poise, demonstrating
integrity, responsibility and excellence, practicing good communication and time management, interacting respectfully with Hoover residents and visitors of all ages, and treating others well. “Serving as a Hoover Belle is a huge growth experience,” Henry added. “They are becoming well-rounded young women and begin opening themselves to seeing more than what their own world is about. They are learning what it means to have people count on you, while also developing a passion for community service at a young age.” Meanwhile, the Belles are gaining access to community service hours that will later be a crucial part of the college application and scholarship process; they are networking and making lifelong friendships and connections; gaining experience with public speaking; and learning that they can make a difference in their community right here and right now. “The Belles are often surprised by how much fun they have serving,” added Cotney. “They find they love being part of this and being with their friends; they have a passion for what they are doing.”

HOW TO BECOME A HOOVER BELLE The Hoover Belle application process is open to any 10th-grade girl who is a resident of Hoover. Once selected, each Belle is expected to complete a minimum of 40 community service hours during her two-year term. As graduating seniors, the Belle with the most community service hours, as well as the Belle with outstanding academics
and merit, is chosen for the organization's two scholarships for continuing education. “During the application and interview process, we are looking for girls who project a positive image of themselves. We choose the cream of the crop, girls who are super involved, yet still find time to give back to the community, said Jennifer Cotney, a member of the Hoover Belle Leadership Committee. “As a result, we end up with Belles from different parts of Hoover, different schools and who have diverse interests. But it's these common key character traits that bring them together.” September: Hoover Belle applications

Planned for Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8, this year’s festival features artist Penny Dobson, as well as more than 100 carefully selected artists 12 Enjoy Hoover September/October 2026
from across the country. Penny, a mixed media artist, says she knew at age 10 that she wanted a career in art. HOOVER’S FALL FESTIVALS BASH ON THE BLUFF Saturday, October 17 1 am - 5 pm Children’s Fresh Air Farms This year’s location change promises more parking, as well as all the familiar favorites like live music, inflatable games, face painting, a pumpkin patch and local vendors. New additions include a train ride, Gaga Ball, a kids’ area and new food trucks. Admission is free, and merchandise sales support Bash’s Blessing to help neighbors in need. everything as a possibility for art. Today, she does painting and beadwork on repurposed wood, toys, vintage clocks and radios, papercutters - and anything else that sparks her creativity. Penny’s draw toward creating sustainable art is a perfect fit for the festival’s mission of sharing eco-friendly ideas, including organic consumables, earth-friendly fibers, and local goods for home, body and health. Attendees can also enjoy displays and vendors centered on nature and community, with plant and tree sapling giveaways as part of the TAKE ROOT initiative to plant more trees in Alabama. A trip to the Moss Rock Festival is not complete without a visit to their famous beer garden. Established in 2012, the beer garden brings together craft brewers and home brewers, wine, beer snacks, and a multi-screen display to watch all the important football games - because after all, there’s an art to creating and enjoying the perfect brew! 14 Enjoy Hoover September/October 2026

This semi-annual “mommy and me” consignment sale is over 20 years old and serves as a significant source of funds for the Children’s Ministries of Bluff Park United Methodist Church and Bluff Park Preschool. Once limited to gently used children’s clothing, toys, baby gear, costumes and more, Bargains On the Bluff now carries “play clothes,” which may have some imperfections but are priced accordingly. There is also a section for ladies' clothing, shoes and accessories. Bargains On the Bluff yields a twice-a-year windfall for two important children’s programs at Bluff Park UMC. The church’s largest community outreach, vacation bible school (VBS), can be offered totally free to hundreds of children throughout the community while giving their parents a financial break. The sale also provides funds for Bluff Park Preschool to fulfill classroom needs including furniture, supplies, toys, books, and whatever else is needed to offer highquality education and childcare to area preschoolers. Goodness in the Gardens A taste-full event returns to Hoover this fall BY JUNE MATHEWS
IMAGINE an early autumn gathering in
a woodland paradise illuminated with strings of twinkling lights and the smiles of around 400 people enjoying the evening. On the menu is a veritable feast, courtesy of nearly 40 local food and drink vendors serving samples of their signature items. This imagined event becomes reality with the 15th Taste of Hoover at Aldridge Gardens on October 15, 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. 18 Enjoy Hoover September/October 2026
“Taste of Hoover was created with a simple goal: to bring the community together while celebrating the incredible local restaurants, bakeries, breweries and beverage providers that make Hoover a vibrant place to live and visit,” said Kristen Valentine, events coordinator with the City of Hoover. “What began as an opportunity to highlight the city's diverse culinary scene is now a community tradition.”

ABOUT ALDRIDGE GARDENS The vision for Aldridge Gardens began in 1966 when horticulturalist Eddie Aldridge visited the Coxe Family Estate on Lorna Road to plant some magnolia trees. He immediately saw the potential for turning the property into a public garden. But it wasn’t until he and his wife Kay purchased the property in 1977 that he could begin laying the groundwork. In the meantime, Eddie and his father had discovered a double-flowering oakleaf hydrangea and patented it as the Snowflake Hydrangea. Now the official flower of the City of Hoover, the Snowflake Hydrangea thrives in abundance in the Gardens, putting on a stunning floral display during late spring and into the summer. To ensure the property would remain a public garden in perpetuity, the Aldridges donated the estate to the City of Hoover in 1997. Aldridge Gardens opened to the public in 2002.

Gardens. Overflow parking will be provided in Trader Joe's parking lot at 1769 Montgomery Highway. ALABAMA GOLF ASSOCIATION, a statewide non-profit based in Hoover, hosts its annual state senior and super-senior four-ball championship on Thursday, October 8 through Saturday, October 10, at Hoover Country Club. The money raised helps support all of the Hoover High School Choirs by funding performances, travel, music and other opportunities for students. Their goal this year is to raise $5,000. “Participants can enjoy live music along the course as Hoover Choir students perform to cheer them on,” said Jessica Prescott, Hoover Choir Booster and Family Living Teacher at R.F. Bumpus Middle School. “Whether running for a personal best or just walking with friends, we'd love everyone in the community to come out to support our students.” Post-race festivities feature karaoke, awards and a silent auction. Since its inception, the race has raised over $1 million for Magic Moments, granting wishes for children in Alabama with chronic life-threatening or acute life-altering conditions. In addition to the full marathon, BHM 26.2 features a 5-person marathon relay, half marathon, 10K, 5k and Kid’s Fun Run. Shelley Anderson, Co-Director of the Alabama Race Series, said the Alabama Race Series was created to bring communities together through running while making a lasting impact for charitable organizations across the state. “BHM26.2 is our flagship event, but it’s just one part of a larger movement,” Anderson said. “We're creating opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to come together, support meaningful causes, and experience the incredible communities that make Alabama such a special place to run." Bash on the Bluff This month, we hear from Krimson Reeves, a Bash on the Bluff co-founder, on the event’s new location and staying true to their mission. BY HEATHER SKAGGS
BASH ON THE BLUFF is moving to a new home this year — and that shift
may be the biggest change yet for the beloved Bluff Park tradition.
The 4th annual event will take place Saturday, October 17, from 11:00am to 5:00 pm at the Children’s Fresh Air Farms, a move organizers say will improve parking, enhance walkability, and provide easier access for families and neighbors. “We felt like this was the best time to explore other options after reviewing our budget and the longevity of Bash,” Krimson Revis said. “We landed on the Children’s Fresh Air Farm because of its accessibility, parking at the church across the street, Bluff Park Elementary, and Shades Cliff Pool, all of which are within walking distance along the sidewalks on Park Avenue to access the Farm.” Along with the new setting, guests can expect the event’s familiar favorites, including live music, inflatable games, face painting, a pumpkin patch and local vendors, plus a few fresh additions such as a train ride, Gaga Ball, a kid’s area and new food trucks. The move also reflects the event’s broader mission: keeping Bash on the Bluff free to attend while supporting Bash’s Blessing, an initiative funded by merchandise sales, such as hats, shirts, and pumpkins, to help neighbors in need. The annual celebration remains a community-driven effort, with organizers welcoming new committee member Logan James and crediting sponsors for helping make the free event possible.
