Falcon Family Weekend Offers Fun Activities, Open Houses This year’s game will be against the Middle Tennessee State beginning at noon at Doyt Perry Stadium which is also celebrating it’s 50th Anniversary The events that do charge admission are the public ice skating events going on throughout the weekend and the BGSU football game. A few events are ticketed, requiring previous reservations Every other event will be free for both students and families so they all can enjoy the weekend and enjoy what BGSU has to offer to their children. Along with these fun activities, there will lots of free food at these events. alcon Family Weekend is today through Sunday, September 16-19. This is a major University hosted event where students can invite their families to campus to attend different events throughout the weekend, showing them what being a Falcon is all about. The activities range from sporting events to movie nights and to getting connected with different organizations on campus. Some of the organizations that will be hosting events during Family Weekend are the Office of Multicultural Affairs, University Activities Organization, the Honors college and the LBGT community. They will be hosting a range of events to make students and their families feel very welcomed to the Bowling Green State University community, whether a student is new to BGSU or a senior. There are many events throughout the weekend, but the one that is very well-known for being a huge Family Weekend event is the football game. This year’s game will be against the Middle Tennessee State beginning at noon at Doyt Perry Stadium. Family Weekend provides different events to make sure that everyone at BGSU has a great experience. There will be five different events on Friday, 18 events on Saturday and two events on Sunday. Some of the events do cost money; however, but most are free to students and their families. Open houses are also being held for the new offices of the Career Center and for Education Abroad

‘Oasis in Space’ To Showcase Planetarium During Falcon Family Weekend By Rachel Shaykin Public Relations Team

he BGSU planetarium is holding its second ever “Oasis in Space” show to display its unique educational capabilities to students and families visiting this weekend as part of Falcon Family Weekend. On September 17th, the planetarium will open its doors for the public to tour the universe and earth through a multi-media show. Through slideshows, projectors and special affects, the show will inform viewers about water and how there may be other places throughout the universe to accumulate water. “We will tour places in the solar system where there is water or ice that may be able to support life,” said Dr. Dale Smith, planetarium director at BGSU. The show starts at 2 pm and tickets are being sold for $1 at the door. “It will be a spectacular show,” said Smith. Following the show there will be stargazing in the observatory on Friday and Sunday evenings if weather permits. Planetarium staff encourages students to bring their families and be able to witness the memorizing show. “Oasis in Space” premiered in spring of 2016 and was very well received and experienced tremendous feedback. The BGSU Planetarium is a 118–seat public science theater serving University students, area schools, and the public of northwest Ohio, according to the BGSU

Set under a 40-foot dome, the Minolta star projector can show the sky as it would be seen from any place on the Earth at any time, including the Sun, Moon, planets, and more than 4000 stars. The Planetarium’s 50 slide projectors, video projection system, special visual effects projectors, multi-channel sound system, and Omni-Q automation controls are used to create educational multimedia programs on astronomy and other topics, according to the web site. The Planetarium was opened in 1984 and is operated by the Department of Physics and Astronomy. The planetarium is utilized by astrology students year-round and different programs are open to the public from September through May. Programs feature a star talk showing the current evening sky followed by a multimedia planetarium show. Weekend programs are followed by stargazing at the Observatory on the roof, weather permitting. FAMILY WEEKEND Education Abroad Opportunities Explained to Visiting Family Members By John Fante Public Relations Intern

isiting family members can check out opportunities for their BG students to study in other cultures Saturday, September 17th 10:30— 11:15 a.m. in 207 Bowen-Thompson Student Union during Education Abroad 101 for Parents. The Education Abroad Program will be having an open information session for the parents of students that have expressed interest about spending the summer, semester, or even the whole year abroad, in various countries around the world. This information session will include various topics such as program types, eligibility, cost, and even the support provided throughout
the experience, from pre-departure to returning. Different staff and students will be talking about their previous experiences in a question and answer type forum. All students are able to study abroad, no matter what major, minor, or class level. Students are able to partake in studying abroad for credit, internships, co-ops, or even a combination of the mix. There is a choice of over 40 countries to study in, from Austria or Spain, and 400 programs from which to choose. Michelle Lee-McLaughlin Ploeger, coordinator, Education Abroad, says that “an education abroad experience is one of the best decisions a student can make. An international academic experience changes an individual’s life; academically, professionally, and personally.”

Cassie Leffel, senior Marketing and Apparel Merchandising Major spent her 2015-2016 Academic year in Strasbourg, France, to earn her Bachelor of Art in European Management. “I was able to travel to over 15 different countries in Europe. Learning about other cultures by experiencing them in person was an opportunity I will never forget,” says Leffel. “Many students think that studying abroad is an unattainable goal, whether it be finances, or the fear of being away from home. Never let anything stand in the way of what you want out of life.” Briana Conley, junior Tourism Leisure and Event Planning Major, also studied
abroad over the course of five months in Amsterdam. “My semester in Amsterdam was a life changing experience,” she says. “I lived within the Dutch culture for five months, traveled to six different countries, and met people from all over the world. New Career Center to Hold Ribbon Cutting, Open House Friday By John Fante Public Relations Intern
F
amilies visiting the University this weekend will have a chance to view the new location and fresh atmosphere, presented by the brand new Career Center offices, which are now located on the second floor of the BowenThompson Student Union in space formally occupied by the University Bookstore. The Career Center and Student Employment Services (SES) is holding a grand opening 2 p.m. Friday Sept. 16, which includes a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the move to the new space within the Union. The ribbon cutting ceremony will feature University President Mazey and Cheryl Rice, Associate Vice Chancellor, Higher Education Workforce Alignment, Ohio Department of Higher Education. The SES is also offering a Parent and Family Meet and Greet 4-5 p.m. the same day to continue the celebration, allowing parents, family, and friends of the students to visit the new Career Center offices.
Those who attend will be able to speak to the staff about the valuable resources that the Career Center offers. Those who attend will be able to speak to the staff about the resources that are available to the students of Bowling Green State University. The SES staff will also be giving tours of the new office space. The Career Center and Student Employment Services are utilizing this event as an additional opportunity to connect with parents and family to be able to work as a supportive team towards the student’s professional development. Light refreshments will be served to the guests attending the meet and greet. The relocation of the Career Center and
Student Employment Services occurred in order to make the center more accessible for students. According to Jeffery Jackson, assistant vice president for Student Career Success and Director Career Center, “The new location will enhance current student awareness of the Career Center’s services. In addition, the new Career Center is now on the official admissions tour for prospective students.” For the employers who recruit on campus, the new location allows them to use new, state of the art private interview
rooms to meet with BGSU students in a more accessible, centralized location on campus. Each interview room has a monitor that can be used for presentations and even for online interviews. The new area will also provide an Employer Lounge to use during their on-campus recruitment activities. The new Career Center location allows the BGSU mission statement to be fully followed and supports the goal of providing a variety of professional development opportunities. n
