A letter from the Music Director
Whitney Houston, one of the most lauded singers of our time, had a secret weapon from the day she was born—her mother, Cissy Houston! Cissy was well-known as a gospel singer, even winning two Grammy Awards as well as touring as one of Aretha Franklin’s backup singers. Whitney came from quite the musical family, counting both pop icon Dionne Warwick and opera legend Leontyne Price among her cousins. She got her start, as many did, singing in her church choir before going on the road as one of Chaka Khan’s backup dancers. And the rest is history!
How wonderful it must have been to be raised in that home music everywhere! It reminds me of just how much we all depend on our families both born and chosen to nurture our very souls! To take care of us both physically and mentally, to push us when we need a little shove, and to let us know that sometimes it is good to take it easy! We take care of each other in many ways here in the chorus.
As we finish our first year after the COVID break, I am so thankful to have this family around me. The stories we tell are the stories of our lives. Thank you for being here today and being a part of that story!
My best,
Reuben Reynolds
A letter from the Executive Director
Dear Music Lovers,
As Whitney Houston once said, “I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone’s shadow. If I fail, if I succeed, at least I’ll live as I believe.” This sentiment perfectly encapsulates the essence of our show today. Thank you for joining us as we celebrate the power of self-love and acceptance, and embrace the unique qualities that make each of us who we are. At its core, Pride is about honoring who we are as individuals and as a
community. Our goal is to create a space where all feel seen, heard, and celebrated. We hope that this concert will be a source of inspiration and empowerment for all who attend. Whether you come to celebrate your own journey, or simply to enjoy stunning music, we welcome you with open hearts and minds. Thank you for helping us change the world one sequin at a time.
With love and pride,
Sarah Shoffner
“Heartbroken and in tears over the shocking death of my friend, the incomparable Ms. Whitney Houston. My heartfelt condolences to Whitney’s family and to all her millions of fans throughout the world. She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth.”
~Mariah Carey
“I need to say thank you tonight to Whitney Houston. I wanted to thank Whitney because when I wrote ‘Born This Way,’ I imagined she was singing it, because I wasn’t secure enough in myself to imagine I was a superstar. So Whitney, I imagined you were singing ‘Born This Way’ when I wrote it. Thank you.”
~Lady Gaga
“My heart is destroyed. I lost my idol and dear friend. My prayers go out to Whitney’s family and her millions of fans around the world. Whitney—the greatest voice of all time—you are my angel, and I will always and forever love you.”
~Brandy
“Whitney came up exactly the way we all did, in the church choir. It was just preordained; she was going to sing. Her destiny was as was the rest of the family. As if God pointed a finger at us and said, ‘Let them vocal cords do what they got to do.’”
~Dionne Warwick
“When she hit the soprano, I said, ‘Oh, this little girl can sing! OK, Cissy’s baby can sing!’”
~Aretha Franklin
“Whitney Houston was amazing, just amazing!”
~Chaka Khan

Community Engagement
Since its founding in 1982 the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus has infused itself into the LGBTQ+ community in Boston. It has also reached out beyond that community into the political, social, and arts arenas.
As a staunch supporter of LGBTQ+ causes, the Chorus has distinguished itself by performing for every major AIDS service organization in the area, several Human Rights Campaign annual fundraising dinners, various events during Pride Week in Boston, the Fenway Men’s Event dinner, and is the main draw for Provincetown’s annual December community holiday celebration, Holly Folly. The Chorus has created innovative collaborations with organizations including Greater Boston PFLAG, GLSEN Boston, AIDS Action Committee, and more. The Chorus sang at the inaugural gala for Governor Charlie Baker, the first LGBT group to perform for a New England governor or for any Republican inaugural in the U.S. Most recently, BGMC performed at the inaugural celebrabtion for Governor Maura Healey, making history as the nation’s first openly lesbian governor.
The BGMC was an active participant in the same-sex marriage movement, becoming a role model for other choruses throughout the world. The BGMC performed at numerous events and hand delivered CDs of itself singing Marry Us to every Massachusetts state legislator.
Each year the BGMC donates hundreds of tickets to LGBTQ+ student organizations and people living with HIV. The Chorus also donates tickets and CDs to support dozens of Boston area non-profit causes. The Chorus has been invited to perform concerts at dozens of open and affirming faith communities and schools throughout New England, bringing its message and music directly to thousands of people in urban, suburban, and rural locales, helping to create new allies for the LGBT community.
Proceeds from community concerts go to support Gay-Straight Alliances and other supportive groups. Since the program’s inception the BGMC has helped raise over $750,000.

I Wanna Dance With Somebody.............................................
We remember and honor our brothers who have passed on. From our very beginning to today, we have lost many members too soon, including our founder Joseph Bevins. We lost our first member to AIDS in 1987. This started a continual stream of singing at memorial services. A ribbon marks those who we have been notified have died of AIDS. All those named are forever part of our chorus family. They are in our hearts and memories.

Whitney Houston: A Tribute to a Legend and LGBTQ Ally
Whitney Houston, born on August 9, 1963, in Newark, New Jersey, was an American singer, actress, and producer whose unsurpassed vocal prowess and soulful melodies made her a global icon. Daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston and cousin of the legendary Dionne Warwick, Whitney's musical roots ran deep in her family.
Early Life and Career
From singing in her church choir at a young age to signing with Arista Records in 1983, Houston's meteoric rise to fame was inevitable. Her self-titled debut album, released in 1985, spawned three No. 1 singles and catapulted her to stardom. With her powerful voice and extraordinary range, Whitney soon became a symbol of black excellence and a role model for aspiring artists worldwide.
Record-Breaking Success
Throughout her illustrious career, Whitney Houston broke numerous records and set the bar high for future performers. With over two-hundred million records sold worldwide, she remains one of the best-selling music artists of all time. Whitney garnered numerous accolades, including six Grammy Awards, twenty-two American Music Awards, and sixteen Billboard Music Awards, solidifying her status as a musical legend.
Film Career and The Bodyguard
Whitney's talents extended beyond the music industry, as she ventured into acting and achieved remarkable success. Her most notable role came in 1992 with the release of "The Bodyguard," where she starred alongside Kevin Costner. The film's soundtrack featured the iconic song "I Will Always Love You," which topped charts around the world and solidified her status as a global superstar.
Connection to the LGBTQ+ Community
Whitney Houston was more than just a phenomenal artist; she was also a staunch ally of the LGBTQ community. Throughout her life, she lent her voice to advocate for equal rights and often acknowledged her LGBTQ fans' unwavering support. Whitney's music resonated deeply with the community, as her powerful lyrics embodied themes of love, resilience, and self-acceptance. Her presence in the LGBTQ+ community helped break down barriers and fostered a sense of camaraderie and belonging.
Legacy and Impact
Despite facing personal struggles and battling addiction, Whitney Houston's immense talent and dedication to her craft never waned. Her untimely passing on February 11, 2012, left a void in the hearts of millions. However, her indomitable spirit and groundbreaking contributions to music and pop culture remain etched in history. As a trailblazer and an unwavering ally, Whitney Houston's impact on the LGBTQ community and the world will forever be celebrated and cherished.
Congratulations on another great season.

Bill Casey Fund
Bill Casey passed away early in the morning of December 10, 2021. He was a vital and beloved member of the Chorus since 1997. As Executive Producer his creativity was seen in every main stage show BGMC performed. Bill conceived, produced and music directed the annual cabaret and provided vocal training to generations of BGMCers as well as students at Boston Conservatory. He was a mentor, a friend, an artist. He is missed. The Bill Casey Fund was established in 2021 by his husband Reuben Reynolds and his mother Becky Casey to honor the legacy of Bill Casey and his commitment to the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus. The fund provides scholarship support to members. The following donors have joined Reuben and Becky in continuing Bill’s legacy.

Need to Know: Boston Gay Men’s Chorus Guide
For the Enjoyment of All
Latecomers and patrons who leave the hall will be seated only after the completion of a work.
Silence all cellphones and other electronic devices throughout the performance.
Photography, sound recording, or videotaping or performances is strictly prohibited.
Masks are optional and encouraged. Singers and musicians on stage today are fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19. BGMC members have each tested negative today before arriving at the hall.
Accessibility
Jordan Hall
Restrooms with accessible stalls are located to the left and to the right of the concert hall.
Accessible platform seats are available for Jordan Hall concerts and can be arranged at point of sale. For assigned seated concerts, patrons requiring assistance should contact the BGMC Box Office in advance of your visit by emailing info@bgmc.org.
Large-Print versions of the program are available by request (with 24+ hours notice). Please call or email the box office to request a program.
American Sign Language (ASL) is a natural language that serves as the predominant sign language of Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities. The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus began providing American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation at its concerts in the 1980’s. The ASL interpretation continues to be a powerful and visual commitment of our organization to welcome all. Both Deaf and nondeaf audience members rave about LeWana Clark’s interpretation of songs and the value that she contributes to the concert going experience.
For Your Safety
Fire Exits indicated by a red light and the sign nearest to the seat you occupy are the shortest routes to the street. In the event of fire or other emergency, do not run – walk to that exit.
If evacuation is needed, follow the instructions given to you by the House Manager and Usher Staff.
Automated external defibrillators (AEDS) and First aid kits are available if needed during an emergency.
Box Office
Order Tickets online at bgmc.org or call 617-542-SING (7464).
The BGMC Box Office is open 12pm – 5pm Monday through Friday, available by phone or email at 617-542-7464 or info@bgmc.org. Our Mobile Box Office is open one hour before concert time on performance evenings.
Can’t make it to the concert? Tickets are non-refundable but you can donate your tickets back to BGMC for a tax-deduction. That allows the Chorus to resell the tickets and for your seats to be used.
Email customer relations at info@bgmc.org prior to show time to donate your tickets. The office is unable to respond to every email on performance days. The IRS requires the request be in writing and occur prior to show time to be eligible for donation.
