From the Maestro It’s more than you. It’s more than me. No matter where we are, We are a family! I remember years ago - right after I started working with the BGMC – I got a call from a singer about an upcoming concert. He and his husband were starting their family and his son was to be born during the concert. I could hardly believe that I got to stand on stage and tell our audience that one of our members had just had a son - Zander. It does not seem nearly as radical today as it did back then. Today there are many chorus members with children. We have become family in so many new and different ways. Today we have a story to tell you. It is the story of Alexander, a man who lived in two different worlds. Alexander’s House is a funny, heartbreaking and touching one act musical that tells the story of a gay man whose death brings together friends, loved ones and a long-lost son to form a new family. His death brings together his two worlds to form something wonderful – a new family! There are many other stories in today’s concert. Stories of children all over the world. Stories of parents growing and changing. Stories of how we all become family. And we welcome to the stage today Zander Slayton, son of longtime chorus member Jim Slayton. They will appear together in Alexander’s House as young Alexander and, quite appropriately, his father! Thank you for being part of our family. It is a joy to sing for you! See you in June for Pride!

Welcome My Dad would have loved this concert. Family was incredibly important to him, and the weaving together of one narrative (how families are formed) with different styles of music (broadway, pop, classical, etc.) would have jazzed him. As an English and Drama teacher he’d adore hearing the soaring music while watching the Chorus stretch theatrically. While he’s no longer with us, his spirit lives on – and that’s a message that’s resonant in today’s performance. In the weeks leading up to today’s show, I’ve learned of several members of our Chorus family whose fathers are not as accepting as mine was. These singers have been shunned, embarrassed, and treated horribly by their dads. The cruelty is almost too much for me to understand. Happily those guys have our Chorus family – where they are loved and accepted for who they are, no matter what. It’s part of our mission. It’s in our DNA. It’s what we do. The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus creates musical experiences to inspire change, build community and celebrate difference. Your support makes our work possible. Talk to your friends about us. Bring them to an event. Follow us on Twitter. Download our app. Like us on Facebook. Make sure you are on the mailing list and the email list. Volunteer. Audition. And, of course, donations are always welcome. Individual contributions fill the gap between corporate giving and ticket sales, which is less than half of BGMC’s income. We are able to create musical experiences to inspire change, build community and celebrate difference thanks to the talents of hundreds of singers and volunteers. Corporate donations are vital to our success, and we thank our foundation and corporate sponsors for their ongoing support: Bank of America, Jet Blue, Reproductive Science Center and Manhunt.
Thank you for being part of the BGMC family – enjoy!

Music Director
A native of Rockford, Illinois, Chad graduated high school at the age of 15 and moved to New York City. There, he became the organist for Radio City Music Hall and rehearsal pianist for the Rockettes, a position that earned him a listing in ‘Ripley’s “Believe It Or Not!”’ as the youngest musician to ever work full time on Broadway. He also was the pianist for various Broadway shows including “A Chorus Line”, “Shenandoah” and “The Act”. Subsequently he moved to Boston to attend the New England Conservatory of Music, where he received a Masters Degree in Composition under Malcolm Peyton. He also worked as music director for Marriott’s Great America theme park in Gurnee, Illinois. Chad’s numerous choral arrangements have been performed and recorded not only by the BGMC, but many other choruses nationally and internationally. Currently he works in the choral department of Wellesley High School and is the Minister of Music at the First Congregational Church in Hanover, MA. In addition to his music credits, he is most proud of being a registered black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Chad thanks his partner David Slaga for his support, friendship and love. Chad has been the Principal Accompanist & Assistant Music Director since 1993 and serves Assistant Choral Director and Accompanist at Wellesley High School.

Focus on the Family Inspired by the 10-year anniversary of the legal marriages of same-sex couples in Massachusetts, Music Director Reuben Reynolds has created Sons & Daughters, a celebration of families and all their complexity, joy, heartbreak, and triumph. Q: Can you tell us more about the genesis of Sons & Daughters and its family theme? A: My partner Bill and I came to Boston from Kansas City, Missouri, in the late 1990s, when I auditioned for the music director position with the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus. We fell in love with the city. It was just the perfect place for us. So we started with the chorus and I remember about three years in we had a real novel experience. There was a guy in the chorus, Jim, who along with his partner Phil, decided to have a child with a single lesbian woman. And they had decided to co-parent this child, all three of them. And she now has a partner and it’s an incredible family. The boys live downstairs and the girls live upstairs and they co-parent three children between them. We had come through all those years of AIDS and all of a sudden I was in a place where gay people were having children. And I thought, this is just incredibly phenomenal. And now it’s routine. Last September we had auditions and a new member joined. He came in and he said, “I just want you to know I have a three-year-old and a five-year-old.” I said, “Why do you want to join the chorus?” And he said, “I have a three-yearold and a five-year-old. I need one night away. The husband can take care of them.” I never would have believed we would have been in this place when I started 20 years ago with a gay men’s chorus. Q: While LGBT families are now much more visible thanks to legal and social advances, this is not a new phenomenon. LGBT people have been parenting children forever, be they from previous heterosexual unions, or kids they intentionally had with same-sex partners through adoption, IVF, etc. What new ground do you cover with Sons & Daughters? A: I wanted to look at the various permutations of family and what it all means: what it means to have children and what it means to parent. Several years ago, we founded an outreach program to form partnerships with Gay / Straight Alliances (GSA) after much of the funding for these school programs were cut. We would come in and do a concert and usually we got a chorus from the school to sing with us. The GSA would sell tickets and would keep all the money to fund their programs. Last year we had a high school that came and sang with us onstage at Jordan Hall. It was a phenomenal experience to see all of those high school students singing a song about how we all must parent people. It takes a whole village to raise a child, basically. And it hit me at that point that I wanted to do a whole year about families. Join the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus this June at Jordan Hall for “Can’t Stop the Beat” – an uplifting anthem celebrating family and the progress of the LGBTQ movement. With our gleeful special guest Alex Newell.
