FROM THE MAESTRO
Photo: Michael Willer
After doing two concerts in the last few years dedicated to all the fabulous female divas who have created the sound tracks to our lives, I figured it was time to pay attention to the guys! So here it is: Let’s Hear It For the Boys, a celebration of male singers — both groups and soloist — who have also helped create the sound tracks of our lives. We are going to start our trip back in the swinging ’60s, when that most famous of all boy groups, the Beatles, burst on to the scene! Along the road we will visit such iconic groups as The Beach Boys, Queen, Journey, and Coldplay; plus iconic music from solo artists like David Bowie, Michael Bublé, Pharrell Williams, and the incomparable George Michael. And to top it all off, who could beat The Village People? When I look at this program it strikes me just how different we are. Some of us think of boy bands as the Beatles, the Beach Boys, or Queen. Others hear the words Boy Band and go right to NSYNC. Some people think of David Bowie and George Michael as two of the greatest lead singers ever. Others may go to Freddy Mercury or even Pharrell Williams. And then there is me. I missed most of this entirely — my favorite boy bands from my youth were led by Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. I learned everything I know of pop music from my husband, Bill, and from the boys in the BGMC. Come to think of it though, there might have been a few nights dancing to The Village People back in college! I say all the time that at the BGMC we tell you the story of our lives. We will tell you the stories of many lives. We are all different, yet, we are all very much the same. Fantastic words to live by these days! Sit back and enjoy — we’re gonna rock your world!
Reuben M. Reynolds, III, Music Director Reuben M. Reynolds, III, has been the Music Director of the BGMC since December,1997. After earning undergraduate degrees in both economics and music, Mr. Reynolds received his Master of Music degree from Louisiana State University where he was teaching assistant to Metropolitan Opera soprano Martina Arroyo, and was on the conducting staff of the Baton Rouge Lyric Opera. In Kansas City, Mr. Reynolds served as Music Director of the Heartland Men’s Chorus from 1989 to 1998 and was also Conductor of the Philharmonia of Kansas City and the Kansas City Civic Opera Theatre. In the summer of 1994, Mr. Reynolds made his European debut conducting the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra and the Beethoven Chamber Orchestra of Ostrava, Czech Republic. He returned to the Czech Republic to conduct the West Bohemia Symphony Orchestra in 1995. Reuben spent the summer of 1998 in St. Petersburg, Russia, conducting the Hermitage Camerata in the Catherine the Great Theatre. Mr. Reynolds has commissioned more than 20 major pieces and hundreds of arrangements in his career. The Boston Globe describes his conducting as “expert and idiomatic.” 5

WELCOME Let’s Hear it for the Boys. As a gay men’s chorus it’s almost a no-brainer to have a concert with music by male groups, male divas and boy bands. I’ve had the privilege of hearing this concert come together over these past few months and each rehearsal has been a celebration and affirmation of who we are. The music demands it and the times we live in require it. We love who we are and we’re not going to go backwards. There’s a party going on—and you’re part of it! We create musical experiences to inspire change, build community, and celebrate difference. Your support makes our important work possible. Talk to your friends about us. Bring them to a chorus event. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram. Like us on Facebook. Download our app. Take a selfie (at intermission) and post it to your social media. Make sure you are on the mailing list and the email list. Audition. And, of course, donations are always welcome. Individual contributions fill the gap between corporate giving and ticket sales, which constitute less than half of BGMC’s income. We are able to make an impact in the community thanks to the talents of hundreds of singers and volunteers. We especially thank our foundation and corporate sponsors for their ongoing support: Bank of America, jetBlue and IVF New England. Thank you for being part of the BGMC family. Have fun today!

There, he became the organist for Radio City Music Hall and rehearsal pianist for the Rockettes, a position that earned him a listing in Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! as the youngest musician to ever work full time on Broadway. Currently he works in the choral department of Wellesley High School and is the Minister of Music at the First Congregational Church in Hanover, Massachusetts. In addition to his music credits, he is most proud of being a registered black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Chad thanks his partner David Slaga for his support, friendship and love. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Photo: Boston Living Center
Since its founding in 1982 the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus has infused itself into the LGBT community of Boston. It has also reached out beyond that community into the political, social and arts arenas. As a staunch supporter of LGBT causes, the Chorus has distinguished itself by performing for every major AIDS service organization in the area, several Human Rights Campaign annual fundraising dinners, various events during Pride Week in Boston, the Fenway Men’s Event dinner, and is the main draw for Provincetown’s annual December community holiday celebration, Holly Folly. The Chorus has created innovative collaborations with organizations including Greater Boston PFLAG, GLSEN Boston, AIDS Action Committee, and more. The Chorus sang at the inaugural gala for Governor Charlie Baker, the first LGBT group to perform for a New England governor or for any Republican inaugural in the U.S.
Photo: GALA Choruses
The BGMC was an active participant in the same-sex marriage movement, becoming a role model for other choruses throughout the world. The BGMC performed at numerous events and hand delivered CDs of itself singing “Marry Us” to every Massachusetts state legislator. Each year the BGMC donates hundreds of tickets to LGBTQ student organizations and to people living with HIV. The Chorus also donates tickets and CDs to support dozens of Boston area non-profit causes. The Chorus has been invited to perform concerts at dozens of open and affirming faith communities and schools throughout New England, bringing its message and music directly to thousands of people in urban, suburban, and rural locales, helping to create new allies for the LGBT community. Proceeds from community concerts go to support GSAs and other supportive groups. Since the program’s inception the BGMC has helped raise $536,500 and brought a vital lifeline to youth organizations. 13

BOSTON GAY MEN’S CHORUS

The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus is one of New England’s largest and most successful community-based choruses. Founded in 1982, the 175-voice ensemble is celebrated for its outstanding musicianship, creative programming, and groundbreaking community outreach. Under the dynamic leadership of Music Director Reuben M. Reynolds, III, the BGMC sings a wide spectrum of classical and popular music and creates social change by providing a positive, affirming image of the gay and lesbian community. The Chorus is heard live by more than 10,000 people each season and thousands more through recordings, television, and internet broadcasts. CBS-WBZ recently named The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus one of the “top 5” choruses in the city of Boston. In June 2015 BGMC became the first GLBT chorus to tour the Middle East. bgmc.org
