BOSTON GAY MEN’S CHORUS
The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus is one of New England’s largest and most successful community-based choruses. Founded in 1982, the 200-voice ensemble is celebrated for its outstanding musicianship, creative programming, and groundbreaking community outreach. Under the dynamic leadership of Music Director Reuben Reynolds, the BGMC sings a wide spectrum of classical and popular music and creates social change by providing a positive, affirming image of the gay and lesbian community. The Chorus is heard live by more than 10,000 people each season and thousands more through recording, television and internet broadcasts. CBS-WBZ named the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus one of the “top 5” choruses in the city of Boston. The Boston Business Journal in 2018 and 2019 named BGMC one of the top 10 performing arts organizations in the city. BGMC is a Cultural Ambassador — being the first LGBT chorus to perform in Poland in 2005, the Middle East in 2015 and in South Africa in June 2018.
Singers and musicians on stage today are fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19. BGMC members have each tested negative today before arriving at the hall.

Joyful, We’re joyful we’re singing for our family! We are one world, one people. And we all breath the same. That line, from our opening song, is a perfect expression of how we feel today! It has been far too long since we have all gathered together to celebrate the holidays. As I have said many times music doesn’t happen without two things — people performing music and people to hear that music. We have been working for this day for many months and are ecstatic to share it with you!
Today’s concert celebrates many things – we celebrate the holidays and we celebrate being together again. As Jacob Narverude puts it in “Sisi ni mojo:” We are one world, one people. And we all breath the same. We will take a journey from Holiday Carols both old and new (including one written in Ukraine) through traditional carols from the Southwest and wind up dancing the “Christmas Conga” with Cindy Lauper!
Today let’s all celebrate together. Celebrate all our many families — both born and chosen, celebrate the journey we have been on and celebrate being together again! It has been far too long!
In the words of Kylie Minogue — Christmas Isn’t Christmas ‘Till You Get Here! Thanks for being here with us today and we will see you in March for the world premiere of A Peacock Among Pigeons!
Reuben Reynolds, Music Director
WELCOME FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Welcome back! We have missed you! We had no idea that 2019 would be the last time we would deliver beautiful holiday music to your ears. So much has changed. You have changed. We have changed. The world has changed.
Our holiday concert this season is an entrancing program that depicts joy, encouragement, and pride in the human spirit. It’s a mesmerizing performance that will inspire you to dream of a merry and bright future. We are ecstatic that you have chosen to celebrate the holidays with us.
Sarah Shoffner, Executive Director
Congratulations on another great season.
We specialize in meeting the unique tax and estate planning needs of the LGBTQ community.

American Sign Language (ASL) is a natural language that serves as the predominant sign language of Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities.
The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus began providing American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation at its concerts during the 1980s. The ASL interpretation continues to be a powerful and visual commitment of our organization to welcome all. Both Deaf and non–deaf audience members rave about LeWana Clark’s interpretation of songs and the value that she contributes to the concert going experience.
A Priori Photography
Since its founding in 1982 the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus has infused itself into the LGBT community of Boston. It has also reached out beyond that community into the political, social, and arts arenas.
As a staunch supporter of LGBT causes, the Chorus has distinguished itself by performing for every major AIDS service organization in the area, several Human Rights Campaign annual fundraising dinners, various events during Pride Week in Boston, the Fenway Men’s Event dinner, and is the main draw for Provincetown’s annual December community holiday celebration, Holly Folly. The Chorus has created innovative collaborations with organizations including Greater Boston PFLAG, GLSEN Boston, AIDS Action Committee, and more. The Chorus sang at the inaugural gala for Governor Charlie Baker, the first LGBT group to perform for a New England governor or for any Republican inaugural in the U.S.
The BGMC was an active participant in the samesex marriage movement, becoming a role model for other choruses throughout the world. The BGMC performed at numerous events and hand delivered CDs of itself singing Marry Us to every Massachusetts state legislator.
Each year the BGMC donates hundreds of tickets to LGBT student organizations and to people living with HIV. The Chorus also donates tickets and CDs to support dozens of Boston area non-profit causes. The Chorus has been invited to perform concerts at dozens of open and affirming faith communities and schools throughout New England, bringing its message and music directly to thousands of people in urban, suburban, and rural locales, helping to create new allies for the LGBT community.
Proceeds from community concerts go to support Gay-Straight Alliances and other supportive groups. Since the program’s inception the BGMC has helped raise $750,000 and brought a vital lifeline to youth organizations.

Delivering on this vision is an ongoing process as our plans and actions evolve through our own learning processes.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
BGMC acknowledges that our office, rehearsal and performance spaces reside on the ancestral and unceded lands of the Massachucett Tribe from whom the Colony, Province and Commonwealth of Massachusetts have taken their name. We remember and honor our brothers who have passed on. From our very beginning to today, we have lost many members too soon, including our founder Joseph Bevins. We lost our first member to AIDS in 1987. This started a continual stream of singing at memorial services. A marks those who we have been notified have died of AIDS. All those named are forever part of our chorus family. They are in our hearts and memories.

If you know anyone whose name has inadvertently been omitted from this list, please let us know so that we may continue to celebrate and honor the contributions of all of our members.
Locus iste
Locus iste is a sacred motet composed by Anton Bruckner in 1869. The text is the Latin gradual Locus iste for the annual celebration of a church’s dedication. Bruckner set it for four unaccompanied voices, intended for the dedication of the Votivkapelle (votive chapel) at the New Cathedral in Linz, Austria, where Bruckner had been a cathedral organist.
This place was made by God, a priceless sacrament; it is without reproach.
Ave Maria
Ave Maria is a sacred motet by Anton Bruckner, a setting of the Latin prayer Ave Maria. He composed it in Linz in 1861. The piece, sometimes named an Offertorium, was published in Vienna in 1867. The motet was first performed on 12 May 1861 as Offertorium of a mass in the Linz Cathedral.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.
Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Al Shlosha D’Varim
The world is sustained by three things, By truth, by justice and by peace.
En Belen Tocan A Fuego
There’s a fire in Bethlehem. in the stable see the flames for they say that born of a Virgin from heav’n to earth He came.
Fish in the river are glistening and dancing,
Dancing and leaping to celebrate his birthday.
Fish in the rive are glistening and dancing,
Dancing and leaping to celebrate his birthday.
In Bethl’em’s humble stable
There’s a lovely white carnation, It will grow into a purple lily. Greet the Savior of the nations!
Fish in the river . . .
Virgin Mary, by the river, Hangs the swaddling clothes of Jesus, All the birds around her are singing And the river flows rejoicing.
Fish in the river . . .
El Noi de la Mare
What shall we give to the child of the Mother?
What can we bring that will give him delight?
Bring to him raisins in kingly abundance, Bring him the off’rings he richly deserves.
What shall we bring to the child of the mother?
What shall we bring to the beautiful boy?
Raisins and honey and olives and walnuts, Raisins and honey and figs that are ripe.
What shall we do if the figs do not ripen?
What shall we do if the figs are still green?
Gifts that we offer the Child should be perfect; Mild for a baby, yet fit for a King
The generosity of individuals, corporate sponsors, and foundations provides nearly half of the BGMC’s annual revenue.

Bill Casey passed away early in the morning of December 10, 2021. He was a vital and beloved member of the Chorus since 1997. As Executive Producer his creativity was seen in every main stage show BGMC performed. Bill conceived, produced and music directed the annual cabaret and provided vocal training to generations of BGMCers as well as students at Boston Conservatory. He was a mentor, a friend, an artist. He is missed.
The Bill Casey Fund was established in 2021 by his husband Reuben Reynolds and his mother Becky Casey to honor the legacy of Bill Casey and his commitment to the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus. The fund provides scholarship support to members. The following donors have joined Reuben and Becky in continuing Bill’s legacy.
