NOTES from reuben The 90s – what can I say? How do you describe that wonderful time when we found joy again? The economy was booming, we were coming out in record numbers and we were learning that we could fight – and win – in the war against AIDS. Countries all over the world – Norway, Israel, Sweden – approved samesex civil unions while the United States brought forth the Defense of Marriage Act. Yet the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus could not be stopped from spreading our message of pride, respect and tolerance. And we are still doing it! Today’s concert is just a small part of how we take on fear, anger and homophobia. Last November we went up to Groton to sing a concert for the First Parish Church. In that one afternoon we raised enough money to fund Gay Straight Student Alliances in five local high schools for a year. In Rockland – just outside of Boston – we stood against homophobia when a local blogger attacked the church presenting us for “bringing homosexuals into Rockland.” The town paper published a letter from the high school’s valedictorian saying that there were already homosexuals in Rockland and he was one of them! And the concert we sang last month in Barnstable allowed the Cape & Islands Gay & Straight Youth Alliance to fill the hole in their budget for the year and keep the CIGSYA house running. But now we come to the close of another fabulous year – our 30th – and we are gonna party like it’s 1999! Sit back and relive that wonderful time when, as Jonathan Larson puts it in his revolutionary musical Rent, people started “living with, not dying from disease.” It has been an incredible 30 years, but it is only the start. I can’t wait to tell you what we have in store for you next year! See you then!
Reuben Reynolds Music Director There’s only us, there’s only this. Forget regret or life is yours to miss. No other road. No other way. No day but today. Jonathan Larson, Rent

WELCOME FROM JOHN Welcome to Get Ready for This! It’s definitely celebration time this weekend. We’re celebrating the music and spirit of the 90s; we’re celebrating Gay Pride as we do every year at this time. And we’re celebrating the anniversary of the BGMC’s first concert, performed 30 years ago at Arlington Street Church on Gay Pride weekend to a standing-room-only crowd. Having sung in that first concert, it’s amazing to have watched the Chorus’ journey over those 30 years! Our 30th anniversary year has been a full one thus far, with our six main stage concerts, the annual performance at Holly Folly in Provincetown, and three very powerful outreach concerts. All in all, a very rewarding year with significant efforts toward our mission. Once we wrap up the Pride concerts this weekend, we will take a short breather and then start preparing for our trip to Denver in July for GALA Choruses Festival 2012. Over 5,000 members of GLBT choruses from around the world will convene and perform for one another at the festival. Thanks to all of the attendees, volunteers, donors, sponsors and chorus members who made our annual gala fundraiser Crescendo such an enjoyable – and successful – evening. I hope you will support those organizations and businesses that contributed to the success of the event. You will find them listed under “Crescendo Thanks” in this program book. Even with the success of Crescendo it has been a challenging year financially for the BGMC. Please consider making a much-needed tax deductible contribution in support of our mission: Creating a More Tolerant Society through the Power of Music. You can do so securely online at www.bgmc.org or by calling us at 617-542-SING (7464). Finally, our heartfelt thanks to our corporate sponsors, who have generously supported us this season: Reproductive Science Center, Manhunt, Ipswitch, JetBlue and our longest-standing sponsor, Bank of America. We truly could not do what we do without their help. And now, get ready for a great evening!

boston gay men’s chorus The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus is one of New England’s largest and most successful community-based choruses. The mission of the BGMC is to create a more tolerant society through the power of music. Now in its 30th season, the 150-voice ensemble is celebrated for its outstanding musicianship, creative programming, and groundbreaking community outreach. Under the dynamic leadership of Music Director Reuben M. Reynolds III, the BGMC sings a wide spectrum of classical and popular music with excellence and builds bridges to all people by providing a positive, affirming image of the gay and lesbian community. Each year the Chorus offers a subscription concert series of three programs, performed in the city’s most prestigious venues including Jordan Hall, the Cutler Majestic Theatre, and Symphony Hall. The Chorus is heard live by more than 12,000 people each season and thousands more through recordings and television broadcasts. The Boston Business Journal consistently ranks the BGMC in its list of the top 25 performing arts organizations in greater Boston. In June 2005, the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus toured central Europe, performing in Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic. In Berlin, the chorus appeared before a crowd of 700,000 for the city’s Christopher Street Day celebration. In Prague, the BGMC performed a concert supporting domestic partnership legislation in world-renowned Dvorak Hall at the Rudolfinum. The Chorus’s journey to Wroclaw, Poland marked the first-ever performance by a gay chorus in that country. The appearance sparked protest and the BGMC performed to a sold out crowd under police guard. The BGMC enjoys a high profile in the greater Boston community. Special appearances have included the re-opening of the Boston Opera House, the gala opening of the Art of the Americas wing at the Museum of Fine Arts, the 1999 Boston Pops July 4th Esplanade concert and telecast, the grand opening concert of the FleetCenter with James Taylor and Patti LaBelle, and Mayor Menino’s inaugural. The Chorus has also performed for the Boston Children’s Museum, multiple Human Rights Campaign Dinners, Boston Lyric Opera’s The Flying Dutchman, and the American Guild of Organists National Convention. In 2001, the BGMC became the first not-for-profit organization to produce a concert at the FleetBoston Pavilion with a program that featured Tony Award winner Nell Carter. The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus was the first openly gay organization to perform at Boston’s historic Symphony Hall and has sung in prestigious venues from coast to coast, including New York’s Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall; Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco; and in Montreal, Minneapolis, Denver, Tampa, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. The BGMC has appeared in every New England state and often performs outreach concerts in the region. A half-hour documentary about the BGMC was seen nationwide on public television stations during 2003. The show, part of the series The Visionaries hosted by Sam Waterston, documented the work of organizations working to create positive social change. The BGMC episode won a 2003 Telly Award for Outstanding Short Documentary, given to non-network TV programming. The BGMC has recorded eleven compact discs, earning 5 Outmusic Award nominations. The newest are Joy!, In Need of Music and Live in Poland. The BGMC is also heard on the Boston Pops recording A Splash of Pops (RCA Victor) under the baton of Keith Lockhart. The BGMC sings a diverse repertoire encompassing virtually all periods and styles of music, from classical masterpieces to popular entertainment. The Chorus also has a distinguished history of creating new music for itself, commissioning more than a dozen works from nationally prominent composers including Daniel Pinkham, David Conte, Conrad Susa, Lowell Liebermann, and Libby Larsen. In addition, the BGMC has given numerous local premieres. From 1985 to 1997, the BGMC was under the direction of Robert Barney, who now holds the title of Conductor Laureate. The Chorus is a member of the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA), an international organization of more than 150 men’s, women’s, and mixed-voice choruses.

meet the staff REUBEN M. REYNOLDS III, Music Director Reuben M. Reynolds III is in his twelfth season as Music Director of the nationally acclaimed Boston Gay Men’s Chorus. The Boston Globe stated, “The Georgiaborn Reynolds brings an interesting resume and varied musical skills to the post… he is a skillful and resourceful conductor, and an emotionally generous one. Also, like Keith Lockhart, he boasts an easy, unpretentious way of speaking to the audience.” After earning undergraduate degrees in both economics and music, Mr. Reynolds received his Master of Music degree from Louisiana State University where he was teaching assistant to Metropolitan Opera soprano Martina Arroyo, and was on the conducting staff of the Baton Rouge Lyric Opera. He is a doctoral candidate at the University of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory of Music. In Kansas City, Mr. Reynolds served as Music Director of the Heartland Men’s Chorus from 1989 to 1998 and was also Conductor of the Philharmonia of Kansas City and the Kansas City Civic Opera Theatre. In the summer of 1994, Mr. Reynolds made his European debut conducting the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra and the Beethoven Chamber Orchestra of Ostrava, Czech Republic. He returned to the Czech Republic to conduct the West Bohemia Symphony Orchestra in 1995. Reuben spent the summer of 1998 in St. Petersburg, Russia, conducting the Hermitage Camerata in the Catherine the Great Theatre. An experienced opera conductor, Mr. Reynolds recently led productions of Follies, West Side Story, Iolanthe and Candide at Boston Conservatory, where he was praised by the Boston Globe for his “expert and idiomatic” conducting. With the Civic Opera he conducted the second U.S. performances of Mark Adamo’s opera Little Women, as well as productions of La Bohème, Suor Angelica, Gianni Schicchi, The Turn of the Screw, Il Signor Bruschino, Don Giovanni, Die Zauberflöte, Cosí fan Tutte, Albert Herring, West Side Story, Dr. Miracle and The Medium. 2012-2013 BGMC Concert Season — Save the dates!

meet the staff CHAD WEIRICK, Principal Accompanist & Assistant Music Director A native of Rockford, Illinois, Chad graduated high school at age 15 and moved to New York City. There he became the organist for Radio City Music Hall and rehearsal pianist for the Rockettes, a position that earned him a listing in Ripley’s “Believe It Or Not!” as the youngest musician to ever work full-time on Broadway. He also was the pianist for various Broadway shows including A Chorus Line, Shenandoah and The Act. Subsequently he moved to Boston to attend the New England Conservatory of Music, where he received a master’s degree in composition under Malcolm Peyton. He also worked as music director for Marriott’s Great America theme park in Gurnee, Ill. Chad’s numerous choral arrangements have been performed and recorded not only by the BGMC, but many other choruses nationally and internationally. Currently he works in the choral department of Wellesley High School and is the Minister of Music at the First Congregational Church in Hanover, Mass. In addition to his music credits, he is most proud of being a registered black belt in Tae Kwon Do. He thanks his partner, David, for his support, friendship and love.
LEWANA CLARK, American Sign Language Interpreter A Texas native, LeWana has been on staff with the BGMC since the 1989 holiday concerts. Her unique style of interpreting incorporates not only the lyrics that are sung but also the tone and musical qualities of the melody. Since becoming nationally certified as an ASL/English Interpreter in 1979, she continues to provide ASL communication services for deaf, hard of hearing, and non-deaf consumers in Boston, across the Commonwealth, nationally and internationally. Although she spends most of her time working in court or in other legal settings, she’s also qualified to interpret in medical, mental health, governmental, educational and theatrical/performing arts settings.
