Welcome!

A letter from the Music Director

Oh, the wonders that we are! Oh, the gifts we have to share!

These are two of my favorite lines that John Bucchino wrote in A Peacock Among Pigeons based on the book by Tyler Curry and Clarione Gutierrez. They encapsulate so much of what we believe at the BGMC—that each of us is wonderful as we are and can create change in this big, beautiful world! The

message is simple: find yourself and take the wonder that you are out to change the world! That is just what the BGMC did a few weeks ago when we presented story hours in the Boston Public Library. With over 40 families at each one, they learned the story of Peter Peacock and how each unique person comes together to create a gorgeous multi-colored peacock.

It has been quite a journey from when I first saw the book several years —and a pandemic-ago, until tonight. What sprang from the minds of Tyler and Clarion just blew me away. I knew that this was a story the BGMC had to tell! And when John agreed to come on board and write the musical version we were all over the moon! And then there was our own Chad. He took John’s songs and created choral versions.

Now it’s up to you—music isn’t music until it’s heard. Sit back, enjoy the performance and take this story out into the world. Every time this story is told the world becomes a better place!

A letter from the Executive Director

Dear Music lovers,

We are proud to finally present “Born This Way,” as it has been such a long time in the making (more than seven years!). This special event will feature a diverse array of musical selections that celebrate individuality and self-expression.

From classical pieces to contemporary hits, this concert showcases the talents of our talented chorus as they share their message of acceptance and inclusivity through song. The crown jewel of this production is the groundbreaking world premiere of “A Peacock Among Pigeons”. Published in 2015, A Peacock Among Pigeons is a children’s book that tells the tale of learning how to stand out when you can’t fit in. To further spread the message, BGMC commissioned award-winning songwriter John Bucchino to transform the book into song. We make music that makes a difference.

Through heartwarming moments and thought-provoking scenes, this work explores themes of identity, belonging, and self-discovery. With vibrant costumes and stunning lighting designs, this production promises to be a visual feast for the eyes. But at its core, “A Peacock Among Pigeons” is a story about acceptance and finding one’s place in the world. It is a reminder that we are all unique and special in our own way, and that it is possible to find happiness and fulfillment when we embrace our individuality.

“Born This Way” is a reminder that we are all beautiful and deserving of love and respect, no matter our differences. We hope that this new work will inspire you to reflect on your own journey and to celebrate the qualities that make you who you are. Whether you are a longtime fan or simply seeking a night of inspiration and upliftment, we know that you will find what you are looking for with the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus.

Sarah Shoffner

Libretto for Peacock Amongst Pigeons is available at bgmc.org on the “Born This Way” page.

The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus is one of New England’s largest and most successful community-based choruses. Founded in 1982, the 200-voice ensemble is celebrated for its outstanding musicianship, creative programming, and groundbreaking community outreach. CBS-WBZ named the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus one of the “top 5” choruses in the city of Boston. The Boston Business Journal in 2018 and 2019 named BGMC one of the top 10 performing arts organizations in the city. BGMC is a Cultural Ambassador — being named the first LGBT chorus to perform in Poland in 2005, the Middle East in 2015 and in South Africa in June 2018.

Singers and musicians on stage today are fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19. BGMC members have each tested negative today before arriving at the hall.

Community Engagement

Since its founding in 1982 the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus has infused itself into the LGBT community in Boston. It has also reached out beyond that community into the political, social, and arts arenas.

As a staunch supporter of LGBT causes, the Chorus has distinguished itself by performing for every major AIDS service organization in the area, several Human Rights Campaign annual fundraising dinners, various events during Pride Week in Boston, the Fenway Men’s Event dinner, and is the main draw for Provincetown’s annual December community holiday celebration, Holly Folly. The Chorus has created innovative collaborations with organizations including Greater Boston PFLAG, GLSEN Boston, AIDS Action Committee, and more. The Chorus sang at the inaugural gala for Governor Charlie Baker, the first LGBT group to perform for a New England governor or for any Republican inaugural in the U.S. Most recently, BGMC performed at the inaugural celebrabtion for Governor Maura Healey, making history as the nation’s first openly lesbian governor.

The BGMC was an active participant in the same-sex marriage movement, becoming a role model for other choruses throughout the world. The BGMC performed at numerous events and hand delivered CDs of itself singing Marry Us to every Massachusetts state legislator.

Each year the BGMC donates hundreds of tickets to LGBT student organizations and people living with HIV. The Chorus also donates tickets and CDs to support dozens of Boston area non-profit causes. The Chorus has been invited to perform concerts at dozens of open and affirming faith communities and schools throughout New England, bringing its message and music directly to thousands of people in urban, suburban, and rural locales, helping to create new allies for the LGBT community.

Proceeds from community concerts go to support Gay-Straight Alliances and other supportive groups. Since the program’s inception the BGMC has helped raise $750,000

The Equality Fund at the Boston Foundation proudly supports Born This Way and the world premiere of Peacock Among Pigeons! In Memorium

We remember and honor our brothers who have passed on. From our very beginning to today, we have lost many members too soon, including our founder Joseph Bevins. WE lost our first member to AIDS in 1987. This started a continual stream of singing at memorial services. A ribbon marks those who we have been notified have died of AIDS. All those named are forever part of our chorus family. They are in our hearts and memories.

Bill Casey Fund

Bill Casey passed away early in the morning of December 10, 2021. He was a vital and beloved member of the Chorus since 1997. As Executive Producer his creativity was seen in every main stage show BGMC performed. Bill conceived, produced and music directed the annual cabaret and provided vocal training to generations of BGMCers as well as students at Boston Conservatory. He was a mentor, a friend, an artist. He is missed. The Bill Casey Fund was established in 2021 by his husband Reuben Reynolds and his mother Becky Casey to honor the legacy of Bill Casey and his commitment to the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus. The fund provides scholarship support to members.

The following donors have joined Reuben and Becky in continuing Bill’s legacy.

Equity-AccessBelonging

BGMC tells stories of the LGBTQ+ experience to better the world around us by uplifting voices from all backgrounds. BGMC is committed to being a safe space where all people, regardless of race, class, gender, ability and intersections beyond can feel a sense of Equity, Access and Belonging. BGMC continually recognizes the importance of underrepresented communities, voices and intersectional ties within and beyond our community.

BGMC Acknowledges that our office, rehearsal and performance spaces reside on the ancestral and unceded lands of the Massachusetts Tribe from whom the Colony, Province and Commonwealth of Massachusetts have taken their name. We pay respect to the ancestral bloodline of the Massachusetts Tribe and their descendents who still inhabit the land to this day. We honor and respect the many native peoples who are connected to this land, past, present and future, inclduing the Nipmuc and Wampanoag peoples.

I am excited to now offer a therapeutic modality called Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP): the use of ketamine as a complement to psychotherapy. I deliver KAP in my practice in partnership with an organization called Journey Clinical, which has a specialized medical team that determines eligibility for KAP, prescribes ketamine lozenges, & supports me in monitoring outcomes. If interested, call, or e-mail me to discuss eligibility & next steps.
