FROM THE MAESTRO Glen Ballard’s lyrics for Spirit of the Season from the film The Polar Express talks about being able to feel the spirit of the season in the air around you — being able to hear it everywhere! The best thing about the spirit of the season is being able to share it! We all celebrate the Holidays differently. For some it is a deeply religious holiday while for others it is a joyous celebration of family and friends.
We are doing things a bit differently this holiday season. Joining us onstage is Sonja Tengblad, a wonderful soprano who happens to be married to our longtime drummer Jonathan Hess. We have all been great friends for a long time — but when we started planning this concert a year and a half ago we had no idea that Sonja and Jonathan would be having a little boy named Soren in September. What a joy it is to report that Soren attended his first BGMC concert at Holly Folly in Provincetown last week. Sinead O’Connor’s This Is To Mother You takes on a very special meaning for us now! As you may know, the BGMC travels to South Africa this summer where we will be singing the songs of our lives and sharing our stories. Hope for Resolution, by Paul Caldwell and Sean Ivory, is a perfect example of what we hope to experience: a joyous combining of different cultures. Paul takes a traditional western song, Of the Fathers Love Begotten, and combines it with a Zulu freedom song. What an exciting way to begin a year that will finish with a concert on the stage of Town Hall in Cape Town, South Africa! What a joy it is to share the spirit of the season with you today!
Reuben M. Reynolds, III, Music Director
Reuben M. Reynolds, III, has been the Music Director of the BGMC since December,1997. After earning undergraduate degrees in both economics and music, Mr. Reynolds received his Master of Music degree from Louisiana State University where he was teaching assistant to Metropolitan Opera soprano Martina Arroyo, and was on the conducting staff of the Baton Rouge Lyric Opera. In Kansas City, Mr. Reynolds served as Music Director of the Heartland Men’s Chorus from 1989 to 1998 and was also Conductor of the Philharmonia of Kansas City and the Kansas City Civic Opera Theatre. In the summer of 1994, Mr. Reynolds made his European debut conducting the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra and the Beethoven Chamber Orchestra of Ostrava, Czech Republic. He returned to the Czech Republic to conduct the West Bohemia Symphony Orchestra in 1995. Reuben spent the summer of 1998 in St. Petersburg, Russia, conducting the Hermitage Camerata in the Catherine the Great Theatre. Mr. Reynolds has commissioned more than 20 major pieces and hundreds of arrangements in his career. The Boston Globe describes his conducting as “expert and idiomatic.” 5
Wishing you a successful season!

WELCOME I believe … do you? The holidays are a time that brings out the best in us. The merry-making and goodwill that infuses the holiday season is especially welcome. At this joyous time of the year we are proud and happy to be part of your holiday tradition. So many of you tell us that it’s not quite the holidays until you’ve experienced the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus concert. It’s something we work hard to deliver and today’s show gives you a great mix of music and merriment. We create musical experiences to inspire change, build community, and celebrate difference. Your support makes our important work possible. Talk to your friends. Like us on Facebook. Download our app. Take a selfie (at intermission). Make sure you are on the mail and email lists. Audition. And, of course, donations are always welcome. Individual contributions fill the gap between corporate giving and ticket sales, which constitute less than half of BGMC’s income. Feel free to stuff our gift boxes with a donation. They’re in the lobby. We are able to make an impact in the community thanks to the talents of hundreds of singers and volunteers. We especially thank our foundation and corporate sponsors for their ongoing support: Bank of America, jetBlue and IVF New England. Thank you for being part of the BGMC family! Here’s to a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2018!

MEET THE STAFF CHAD WEIRICK, Principal Accompanist & Assistant Music Director A native of Rockford, Illinois, Chad graduated high school at the age of 15 and moved to New York City. There, he became the organist for Radio City Music Hall and rehearsal pianist for the Rockettes, a position that earned him a listing in Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! as the youngest musician to ever work full time on Broadway. He also was the pianist for various Broadway shows including A Chorus Line, Shenandoah, and The Act. Subsequently he moved to Boston to attend the New England Conservatory of Music, where he received a Masters Degree in Composition under Malcolm Peyton. He also worked as music director for Marriott’s Great America theme park in Gurnee, Illinois. Chad’s numerous choral arrangements have been performed and recorded not only by the BGMC, but many other choruses nationally and internationally. Currently he works in the choral department of Wellesley High School and is the Minister of Music at the First Congregational Church in Hanover, Massachusetts. In addition to his music credits, he is most proud of being a registered black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Chad thanks his partner David Slaga for his support, friendship and love. Chad has been the Principal Accompanist & Assistant Music Director since 1993 and serves as Assistant Choral Director and Accompanist at Wellesley High School.
LEWANA CLARK, American Sign Language Interpreter LeWana Clark has been the American Sign Language interpreter for the BGMC since 1989. She creates a unique interpretation that incorporates not only the lyrics that are sung but also the tone and musical qualities of the melody. She provides communication access services for Deaf, hard of hearing, Deaf-Blind, and nondeaf consumers in Boston, across the Commonwealth, nationally and internationally. Although she spends most of her time working in court or in other legal settings, she’s also qualified to interpret in medical, mental health, governmental, educational and theatrical/performing arts settings. To further her professional credentials, LeWana is currently working on her doctorate degree at Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. LeWana has been the American Sign Language Interpreter for the BGMC since 1989. American Sign Language (ASL) is a natural language that serves as the predominant sign language of Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities. The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus began providing American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation at its concerts during the 1980s. The ASL interpretation continues to be a powerful and visual commitment of our organization to welcome all. Both Deaf and non-deaf audience members rave about LeWana Clark’s interpretation of songs and the value that she contributes to the concert going experience. 9

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Photo: Boston Living Center
Since its founding in 1982 the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus has infused itself into the LGBT community of Boston. It has also reached out beyond that community into the political, social, and arts arenas. As a staunch supporter of LGBT causes, the Chorus has distinguished itself by performing for every major AIDS service organization in the area, several Human Rights Campaign annual fundraising dinners, various events during Pride Week in Boston, the Fenway Men’s Event dinner, and is the main draw for Provincetown’s annual December community holiday celebration, Holly Folly. The Chorus has created innovative collaborations with organizations including Greater Boston PFLAG, GLSEN Boston, AIDS Action Committee, and more. The Chorus sang at the inaugural gala for Governor Charlie Baker, the first LGBT group to perform for a New England governor or for any Republican inaugural in the U.S.
Photo: GALA Choruses
The BGMC was an active participant in the same-sex marriage movement, becoming a role model for other choruses throughout the world. The BGMC performed at numerous events and hand delivered CDs of itself singing Marry Us to every Massachusetts state legislator. Each year the BGMC donates hundreds of tickets to LGBTQ student organizations and to people living with HIV. The Chorus also donates tickets and CDs to support dozens of Boston area non-profit causes. The Chorus has been invited to perform concerts at dozens of open and affirming faith communities and schools throughout New England, bringing its message and music directly to thousands of people in urban, suburban, and rural locales, helping to create new allies for the LGBT community. Proceeds from community concerts go to support Gay-Straight Alliances and other supportive groups. Since the program’s inception the BGMC has helped raise $536,500 and brought a vital lifeline to youth organizations. 13
