WELCOME You might be asking yourself “What in the world is A Super Gay Christmas?” Well, for the more than 200 people onstage tonight, it means starting to rehearse holiday music in September. Imagine singing Jingle Bell Rock at the end of the summer! It means a Sunday brunch to welcome 47 new brothers to the BGMC. It means heading up to Ogunquit in November with 175 of your BGMC brothers for a weekend of rehearsals. It means dance and solo auditions—then the horror of having to learn choralography! It means Chorus Thanksgiving—group dinners held all over town before we all come together for desert. And then it’s off to Provincetown for Holly Folly followed by 5 concerts and 2 Christmas Eve Services here in Boston. All so that we can bring you “A Super Gay Christmas!” And what a joy it is to sing for you; to bring you our message of love and acceptance. And two weeks later we start all over again! This year we have something quite special for you in March: a newly commissioned work. A Peacock Among Pigeons, by Broadway composer John Bucchino is based on the award-winning book written by Tyler Curry and illustrated by Clarione Gutierrez. It is the story of Peter Peacock. Peter was raised by a flock of pigeons who found him strange and weird because he did not look or fly the same as they did. The book follows Peter’s journey from social outcast to self-acceptance. For so long I saw what the pigeons saw. And although my feathers never changed, I saw myself differently after meeting new birds who were special and liked me for the Peacock I am. Mark your calendar right now to join us in March for a thrilling concert. You will be amazed by the artwork used to portray Peter and friends. Jordan Hall has never looked this joyous!

Reuben M. Reynolds, III, Music Director The holiday season is marked by many traditions: some liturgical, some secular, and some unique to ourselves and those close to us. Todays show has music for all—everything from lush choral singing to familiar songs to over-the-top, gayer than gay flamboyance. It’s a little bit of each of us and it’s our tradition to bring it to you. We create musical experiences to inspire change, build community, and celebrate difference. Your support makes our important work possible. Talk to your friends. Like us on Facebook. Download our app. Take a selfie (at intermission at our rainbow tree). Make sure you are on the mail and email lists. Audition. And, of course, donations are always welcome. Individual contributions fill the gap between corporate giving and ticket sales, which constitute less than half of BGMC’s income. There are donation boxes in the lobby. We are able to make an impact in the community thanks to the talents of hundreds of singers and volunteers. We especially thank our foundation and corporate sponsors for their ongoing support: Bank of America, jetBlue, Product Genesis and IVF New England. Happiest of holidays and warm wishes for a peaceful and prosperous 2020 for us all!

Craig Coogan, Executive Director

PURPOSE

BOSTON GAY MEN’S CHORUS

To inspire

Gretjen Helene Photography

MISSION The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus creates musical experiences to inspire change, build community and celebrate difference.

CORE VALUES We’re a family with a tradition of excellence We provide a safe and welcoming community to be ourselves

The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus is one of New England’s largest and most successful community-based choruses. Founded in 1982, the 200-voice ensemble is celebrated for its outstanding musicianship, creative programming, and groundbreaking community outreach. Under the dynamic leadership of Music Director Reuben M. Reynolds III, the BGMC sings a wide spectrum of classical and popular music and creates social change by providing a positive, affirming image of the gay and lesbian community. The Chorus is heard live by more than 10,000 people each season and thousands more through recording, television and internet broadcasts. CBS-WBZ named the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus one of the “top 5” choruses in the city of Boston. The Boston Business Journal in 2018 and 2019 named BGMC one of the top 10 performing arts organizations in the city. BGMC is a Cultural Ambassador — being the first LGBT chorus to perform in Poland in 2005, the Middle East in 2015 and in South Africa in June 2018.

We make music that makes us and our audiences proud We operate with integrity We genuinely care for each other; bringing out the best of each other — we are at our best as a group We change hearts and minds through our presence and our music We are from diverse backgrounds but have a shared passion for music

DR. LEWANA CLARK

American Sign Language Interpreter LeWana Clark has been the American Sign Language interpreter for the BGMC since 1989. Join us as we celebrate her 30 years in advancing our mission! She creates a unique interpretation that incorporates not only the lyrics that are sung but also the tone and musical qualities of the melody. In her day job, she provides communication access services for Deaf, hard of hearing, Deaf-Blind, and nondeaf consumers in Boston, across the Commonwealth, nationally and internationally. Although she spends most of her time working in court or in other legal settings, she’s also qualified to interpret in medical, mental health, governmental, educational and theatrical/ performing arts settings. One of her many accomplishments is her graduation from Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. with her doctorate degree in sign language interpreting and translation with specializations in pedagogy and research. LeWana has been the American Sign Language Interpreter for the BGMC since 1989. American Sign Language (ASL) is a natural language that serves as the predominant sign language of Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities. The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus began providing American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation at its concerts during the 1980s. The ASL interpretation continues to be a powerful and visual commitment of our organization to welcome all. Both Deaf and nondeaf audience members rave about LeWana Clark’s interpretation of songs and the value that she contributes to the concert going experience.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Photo: Boston Living Center

Since its founding in 1982 the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus has infused itself into the LGBT community of Boston. It has also reached out beyond that community into the political, social, and arts arenas. As a staunch supporter of LGBT causes, the Chorus has distinguished itself by performing for every major AIDS service organization in the area, several Human Rights Campaign annual fundraising dinners, various events during Pride Week in Boston, the Fenway Men’s Event dinner, and is the main draw for Provincetown’s annual December community holiday celebration, Holly Folly. The Chorus has created innovative collaborations with organizations including Greater Boston PFLAG, GLSEN Boston, AIDS Action Committee, and more. The Chorus sang at the inaugural gala for Governor Charlie Baker, the first LGBT group to perform for a New England governor or for any Republican inaugural in the U.S. The BGMC was an active participant in the samePhoto: GALA Choruses sex marriage movement, becoming a role model for other choruses throughout the world. The BGMC performed at numerous events and hand delivered CDs of itself singing Marry Us to every Massachusetts state legislator. Each year the BGMC donates hundreds of tickets to LGBT student organizations and to people living with HIV. The Chorus also donates tickets and CDs to support dozens of Boston area non-profit causes. The Chorus has been invited to perform concerts at dozens of open and affirming faith communities and schools throughout New England, bringing its message and music directly to thousands of people in urban, suburban, and rural locales, helping to create new allies for the LGBT community. Proceeds from community concerts go to support Gay-Straight Alliances and other supportive groups. Since the program’s inception the BGMC has helped raise $660,000 and brought a vital lifeline to youth organizations.
