SPORTS, FITNESS, & PLAY OF SAN FRANCISCO

In 2021, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco (BGCSF) introduced “Play” as a key concept in our Sports & Fitness discipline, creating Sports, Fitness, and Play (SFP). Adding the concept of “Play” is about encouraging all kids to find joy in physical activity, eliminating the barriers to entry so every kid can have fun in our gyms and playfields.

BGCSF Co-Ed Sports Leagues are one of BGCSF’s most popular and engaging activities. The four sports offered included flag football, basketball, and soccer. Most importantly, BGCSF sports leagues provide youth with FUN opportunities to be physically active and build skills. Cooking for Life teaches our members nutritional knowledge and cooking skills for their lifelong health and well-being. This partnership provides staff training, curriculum, and weekly food deliveries to ensure our members receive a high-quality program experience. Pickleball Clinics were offered at four sites to introduce this lesser-known sport to BGCSF members. We partnered with the San Francisco Pickleball community, allowing members to learn new skills and develop an interest in another unique and upcoming sport. Lacrosse Clinics were offered through our partnership with USA Lacrosse and SF Riptide. Our members were provided the opportunity to learn and develop the skills and fundamentals to play lacrosse successfully.

“I really enjoyed participating in the grounds crew program at my Clubhouse. I worked to keep the baseball field groomed for games and practices and ensured the equipment was set up and safely stored.” NYLAH 17-year-old member of the Willie Mays Clubhouse at Hunters Point

Summer allows us to break down boundaries and bring our kids from across the City together. Many of our most-loved summer programs engage members from multiple Clubhouses. This includes our Junior Giants program at our Willie Mays Clubhouse which reaches nine Clubs and over 175 youth.
