or Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco, 2005 was clearly the beginning of a new and exciting time. We completed a new strategic plan, agreed to expand our services to Hunters Point and rebuild our Clubhouse on the eastern side of the Mission, founded a new Trustee Board, moved our headquarters to a new location and hired a President & Chief Executive to lead the organization. As we move through the next seven to 10 years, 2005 will be remembered as the time when Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco evolved from an important non-profit to an institution in the City & County of San Francisco — a true citywide resource for young people and their families. More so than at any time in our history, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco is at the heart of our city’s communities providing award-winning programs and services, while building bridges between our youth and partnering non-profits, their schools, and other resources in their community. For example, we expanded our reach to include in-school services for young people, helping schools to meet demand despite losing resources. We secured scholarships to private high schools for all 12 boys on our eighth grade Rebels basketball team at the Ernest Ingold Clubhouse. We expanded our mental health services from one site to four sites, adding an important component to our gang prevention work and a very necessary service to our members who have been directly affected by violence in their neighborhoods. And we formed a partnership with the San Francisco Food Bank to run neighborhood food pantries at three of our Clubhouses (with more expected), making healthy eating affordable while creating a greater sense of community. We are proud to say that 2006 is already proving to be a great year. Our Citywide Youth of the Year, Daniel, advanced to the state finals in Sacramento where he met Governor Schwarzenegger and Assemblyman Leno, and was introduced on the Senate Floor by Senator Migden. We began programming in Hunters Point in September with the Junior Giants baseball program and we are working to finalize our renovation plans for the old Milton Meyer Recreation & Park site. We serve school age youth in nine San Francisco neighborhoods. Our Clubs are in neighborhoods which have the greatest numbers of children as well as the greatest incidents of violent crime and homicides. The Mayor’s Office reveals that children and youth living in the City have become more segregated by class and race as higher income families enroll their children in private schools. Thirty percent of the City’s children attend private schools. African-American and Latino young people are disproportionately poor, more likely to be institutionalized, and have lower academic achievement than any other ethnic groups. Asians comprise the greatest number of poor children in San Francisco.
Overcoming Challenges The Club provides tremendous support — for only $10 a year — to struggling San Francisco families. Language barriers, unemployment and child care are constant issues in our members’ homes. Close to 70% of our members are living in homes without both parents and 94% of our kids’ families are considered “low” to “extremely low” income, earning approximately $30,000 annually.
Academic Coaching Make the team and make the grade. The Rebels Basketball Program has all the right tools to make top-notch students and extraordinary athletes, requiring a high grade point average to stay on this elite team. At our Ernest Ingold Clubhouse, the Rebels is a comprehensive program supported by a network of coaches, educators, volunteers and parents who influence players both on and off the basketball court. Last year all eighth grade Rebels were accepted, with financial aid, to private high schools here in the city. The Rebels are just one example of how change happens for our kids, neighborhood by neighborhood.
Teen Programs Teens who participate in high quality after-school programs benefit by higher grades, recovery from low academic performance, an increased interest in education, a stronger self-image, positive social development and reduction in risk-taking behavior. We are open extended evening hours for teens, offering interesting, fun, positive programming. Teen Staff positions provide young people with money, a positive sense of self and job skills. We address everything from college preparation and career exploration to gang intervention and health programs... it’s all about making healthy choices.
Outdoor Education Education opens the mind, nature opens the heart. We believe that educating children through outdoor experiences cannot be overstated. Natural beauty is one of California’s greatest assets, yet it remains beyond the reach of too many of its young people. Many children and teens spend far too much time indoors, engaged in electronic entertainment, getting little exercise. We give our members the chance to discover the inspiration and fun that the outdoors provides. More than 1,200 inner-city children attend our residential camp, Camp Mendocino, each year. Hundreds more participate in year-round recycling, habitat restoration and other outdoor education programs.
Education When school doors are closed, ours are open. Every day after school, holidays and all day in the summer months we provide thousands of children and teens with meaningful, well-rounded education programs. We are reaching our members in the most personal and powerful ways, finding non-traditional and traditional learning experiences that inspire kids to achieve excellence. Yes, we are an academic enrichment program for disadvantaged children and teens. But for real strides in helping kids reach their learning potential, staff members know they must be involved in the day-to-day lives of our Club members, serving as consistent advocates for education.
Health We now provide preventive and comprehensive approaches to health care that help young people face many critical issues including nutrition, dental care and substance abuse. Within the walls of our Clubs, our members are in an inviting and nurturing environment where they can hear the truth about their healthcare concerns. Knowing that there are still a significant number of uninsured children, we have built a partnership with San Francisco Health Plan to secure insurance coverage for all our members. We want to initiate healthy behaviors for life.
Youth of the Year “The Club has been my sanctuary, my safe haven, my vacation getaway, my closest friend, and most of all, it has been like a second parent,” says Daniel, our current Citywide Youth of the Year. The Youth of the Year program is our premier youth recognition program. At each Club, the program promotes and celebrates service to Club, community and family; academic performance; moral character; life goals; poise and public speaking. Kids of all ages are recognized as Youth of the Year in different departments, but only one member becomes the Clubhouses’ Citywide Youth of the Year.
Volunteers Every week, 365 volunteers come through the doors of our Clubhouses to offer after-school homework help and one-one-one tutoring. Another 300 lead specialized programs such as yoga, girl’s soccer and dance. We also have volunteers participate in hands-on work projects, especially at Camp Mendocino. An invaluable part of our youth development work, volunteers donate close to 20,000 hours to the agency annually — a value of over $360,000.

Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco offers programs in five areas: Character and Leadership Development This program area empowers youth to support and influence their Club and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image, participate in the democratic process and respect their own and other’s cultural identities. Clubhouse programs include: Youth of the Year, Keystone Club, Torch Club and Community Service. Educational and Career Development This program area enables youth to become proficient in basic educational disciplines, apply learning to everyday situations to achieve success in a career. Clubhouse programs include: Power Hour Homework Assistance, Career Prep, Junior Achievement and Career Launch, Technology Centers, Math, Sciences and Literacy. Health and Life Skills This program area develops young people’s capacity to engage in healthy behaviors that nurture their own well-being, set personal goals and live successfully as self-sufficient adults. Clubhouse programs include: SMART Moves, SMART Girls and Passport to Manhood. The Arts This program area enables youth to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts, crafts, performing arts and creative writing. Clubhouse programs include: National Fine Arts Contest and Art Show, National Photography Contest, Creative Writing, Poetry and Performing Arts. Sports, Fitness and Recreation This program area develops fitness, positive use of leisure time, skills for stress management, teamwork, appreciation for the environment and social skills. Clubhouse programs include: Citywide Sports including soccer and basketball leagues, as well as non-traditional and non-competitive sports such as judo and swimming.
