WELCOME TO THE 15TH BFDG PRODUCTION DESIGN AWARDS

It’s my pleasure to welcome you to our 15th BFDG Production Design Awards. Our annual glittering event, where we celebrate exceptional Production Design and the fantastic work of our Art Departments.

This year our 15th Annual Awards falls in the Guild's 80th Anniversary year.

Founded in 1946 “for the betterment of design in British films” as The Society of British Film Art Directors and Designers. The Guild of Film Art Directors then grew out of this society which went on to become the current British Film Designers Guild, representing all branches of the Art Department from Students to Production Designers.

The Guild was established barely a year after the end of the Second World War, in the year that the BBC introduced the TV licence and the country was focused on post-war reconstruction. Those 13 founding members would barely recognise the world we all live in today.

We’ve come a long way since 1946 but our mission statement has remained the same.

I’d like to thank all of tonight's Sponsors, as well as our Business and Education Partners, for all their continued and unwavering support throughout the year. They are the lifeblood of the Guild, and without their generosity events like this would not be possible.

Thanks also to our Office Management Team who have, as ever, worked tirelessly to keep the Guild operating during what has been a challenging year.

I’m also delighted to welcome back, for another year, our outstanding host, the inimitable Mark Kermode. Now firmly part of the Guild family, we are thrilled to have him return to host our Awards once again.

2025 has continued to be another challenging year in our industry. What was seen as a correction, following the US strikes, has sadly evolved into more of a ‘new normal’.

Some of our members have found a lack of work over the last year, and we as a Guild have offered support to our members wherever we could.

But on a more positive note, some members have been busy, as is evident from the tremendous number and quality of this year’s nominations, which most definitely bucks the trend of an industry slowdown.

With that in mind, I do believe we can be optimistic that 2026 will bring improvement across our industry. While film and television spending increased in 2025 compared with the previous year, fewer productions were actually made. Even so, there are encouraging signs that growth is continuing, and that 2026 will see more projects move into production than last year.

THE PETER LAMONT SPOTLIGHTING NEW TALENT AWARD

We are honoured to support The British Film Designers Guild 15th annual Production Design Awards.

These awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of the Production Design and Art Departments working in our industry, and they shine a light on the talented individuals whose contributions bring incredible stories to our screens. At CrewHQ we create career pathways and foster the

next generation of talent in our industry through our innovative training programmes. We are incredibly proud to be able to sponsor The Peter Lamont Spotlighting New Talent Award, which highlights the future generation trailblazing filmmakers, celebrating their talents and amazing creative skill.

Congratulations to all of this year’s inspiring nominees and winners; we are excited to watch your career paths unfold and look forward to seeing your work on our screens in years to come.

From a young age, after watching hours of behind-the-scenes features and director's commentaries, I knew that I wanted to work in film and television. However, it wasn’t until I found myself standing on the set of Indiana Jones's apartment in 2021 that I realised the Art Department is where I truly belong. I was in absolute awe seeing how the meticulous level of detail and creativity could transport you into a character's world, despite knowing that, in reality, you’re on a soundstage in the UK! The thought of being part of that process in some small way was hugely exciting and motivating.

There is nothing more satisfying to me than watching a set evolve: from an empty stage, to rigging and rostrums, to flattage and plaster, painting and greens, until you find yourself standing on a fully dressed set the day before shoot, fully immersed in another world. That transformation is

where the magic happens. I have been incredibly fortunate to work on some amazing productions alongside exceptionally talented people. Being able to work with them and to learn from them every day is an honour and privilege; one that I will never take for granted.

Lola Fleming

Originally from Dublin, Ireland, I got started in the film industry as a Camera Trainee in 2018 during university. This experience opened my eyes to the excitement and organised chaos of film sets and after finishing my undergrad in English and Film, I moved to the UK to pursue an MA in Production Design at the NFTS.

Since graduating I have worked for 2 years as an Art Department Assistant on amazing productions such as ‘Wednesday’ and ‘Narnia’. I have learnt so much and had the time of my life since joining the Art Department, feeling hugely welcomed by the ADGI at home and the BDFG in the UK. I love that every day in my job is different, exciting, and fast-paced. From the start of my

career, I have had the pleasure of being mentored by extremely talented and kind Production Designers, Supervisors and Art Directors who have supported my journey in the Art Department so far. I can’t wait to continue my career in such a wonderfully creative industry, where I aspire some day to work as a standby-art director or even a production designer myself.

Melissa Davis SET DEC ASSISTANT

While studying for an English & Film undergraduate degree, I spent a formative year abroad in the U.S. where I discovered hand draughting, set construction and modelmaking. Eager to make the most of the opportunity, I joined MA students wherever possible, gaining exposure to computer draughting and 3D modelling and seeing how rough concepts evolve into fully realised sets. This experience sparked my interest in production design.

On returning to the UK, I completed the MA Production Design course at the National Film and Television School. There, I designed and built a restaurant set for the short film 'Date with Death' and went on to design and dress the location set for my graduation film Trouble, which was a finalist at the Student Academy Awards. Since graduating, I have worked as an Art Assistant on '28

Years Later' and '28 Years Later – The Bone Temple' (PDs Gareth Pugh and Carson McColl, SAD Paul Ghirardani), 'The Duchess and I' (PD Gemma Jackson, SAD Seeta Lingam), and 'Roadhouse 2' (PD Greg Berry, SAD Nick Gottschalk). I aim to progress through the Art Department as a Junior Draftsperson, excited to continue learning and eager to be a helpful asset to my team.

PLANET POSITIVE AWARD

“We’re so pleased to once again be sponsoring the BFDG Production Design Awards Planet Positive Award. Congratulations to

all the finalists for their incredible achievements.

Sustainability has always been a priority for Sky Studios Elstree. We were proud to have been named BAFTA albert 2023 cohort’s ‘most sustainable studio’, awarded an overall score of 95%, which is the highest score for any studio, globally.

This achievement comes from applying expertise, experience, and dedication into all of our practices on site. Sky Studios Elstree is 100% powered renewable energy, a significant portion of which comes from the 3-acres of solar panels across the studio’s rooftops. Alongside this, we harvest rainwater, use sustainable led lighting and electric vehicles plus our operations on site are free from single-use plastic.

Our clients are also supported at every phase of production, to ensure it’s easy for them to make sustainable choices when they work at Sky Studios Elstree.

The Planet Positive Award aligns perfectly with our ethos, and with the wider ethos of Sky, who have launched a companywide environmental impact programme, Sky Zero, to build a low carbon economy and inspire positive change for the planet.

We're excited tonight to be celebrating the talented and diverse Art Departments across the UK who are also championing the environment in the work they do."

PRODUCTION BUYER

Kate Venner

Ever since I can remember, I’ve been captivated by the power of spaces: how environments tell stories, evoke emotion, and shape our imagination. That passion led me to Kingston University, where I achieved my BA (Hons) in Interior Design. It was there that my storytelling instincts began to expand beyond interiors when I had the opportunity to collaborate with the Film course run by Moira Tait. That crossover opened a new exciting world for me.

After graduating, I began volunteering at the National Film and Television School where I worked with second and third year students, as both Art Director and Production Buyer. Those early experiences were invaluable and taught me how creativity thrives in collaboration to bring storytelling alive.

Soon after, I moved into the professional world, joining the Art Department as an Assistant Art Director on multi-episodic productions such as 'Poirot'. It was an exciting, fast-paced environment

that fuelled my passion for design and storytelling. In the mid 90’s, my life moved on to another chapter. Motherhood. What a journey. During those years, I returned to my roots designing retail interiors.

By the early 2000’s I realised that the energy, creativity and collaborative spirit of film making was where I truly belonged. Returning to the industry felt like coming home. I began working as a Production Buyer, collaborating alongside talented Set Decorators including Maggie Gray and Tina Jones on projects such as 'The Young Victoria' and 'Miss Potter'.

In 2010, I was approached by Lee Sandales to join the Art Department on 'War Horse' - a collaboration that would mark the beginning of a long and treasured professional and personal relationship. Since then, we’ve worked together on 16 films: including 'Star Wars', '1917', 'The Batman', 'Wonka' and 'Wicked': each one offering a new challenge, a new story and a new opportunity to push creative boundaries.

My career has always been guided by a deep love for design. I remain passionate about the collaborative artistry of film: the marriage of vision, craftsmanship and emotion that brings stories to life for audiences around the world.

SET DECORATOR & ART DIRECTOR

Malcolm Stone

I was born in London in 1948, the son of George Stone, a Royal Engineer who voluntarily returned from service in the Far East to help rebuild Britain after the war. My childhood was spent in houses my father helped to construct, first in Kent and later in Surrey, where I was educated at Wallington County Grammar School for Boys.

After leaving school, I spent six formative years at art college, completing both graduate and postgraduate degrees in Interior Design at Leicester. Alongside my academic training, I developed a lasting commitment to rugby, a pursuit that remained an important part of my life for forty-six years.

My career began at Leicester Museums as an exhibition designer, followed by work with an architectural practice in London. I then moved into television, joining Southern Television in Southampton as an assistant designer. Within two years, I transferred to Lew Grade’s ATV Network at Elstree, where I rapidly progressed to Senior Designer. There I worked across drama and light entertainment, contributing to productions made for both British and American audiences. It was during this period that I joined the design team for The Muppet Show and met Jim Henson, an association that would prove to be a defining influence on my career.

In 1979, I left ATV to establish Mightart Ltd. and embark on a freelance career, beginning with Jim Henson’s feature film

Leavesden.

'The Dark Crystal'. This marked the start of forty-seven years working as an Art Director, Set Decorator, and Production Designer on more than 100 film and television productions.

My work has also extended into writing, including the screenplay for the feature film Mrs Caldicot’s Cabbage War, starring Pauline Collins and John Alderton. Among more unusual projects was the construction of a full-size replica of the then-new Docklands Light Railway train for GEC.

I have been honoured with multiple Emmy nominations for Outstanding Art Direction, including 'The Muppet Show' with Beverly Sills (1979) and Brooke Shields (1980), 'War and Remembrance' starring Robert Mitchum (1988), and 'Band of Brothers' (2001), produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. I have also received nominations from the Art Directors Guild of America for excellence in design for 'The Company' (2007), produced by Ridley Scott, and 'Tut' (2015), produced and directed by David Von Ancken.

My awards include the ACE Award (American Award for Cable Television Excellence) for Mother Goose Tales, produced by Jim Henson, and a British Television Advertising Award Diploma for Paxo’s 'Rooster Booster'. Beyond my creative work, I have been privileged to serve as Chairman and Treasurer of the British Film Designers Guild. I am an Honoured Friend of the British Society of Cinematographers and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

For over six decades, the film and television industry has battled shifting scripts, impossible period demands, last-minute rewrites, and the eternal cry of “Can we have that vehicle… today?”

Through it all, one constant has quietly kept productions moving:

TLO Film Services.

TLO delivers hero cars, background fleets, and bespoke builds with a rare combination of speed, precision, and unflappable calm. It’s the kind of professionalism that makes even the most battle-hardened AD pause, nod, and exhale. Their expertise is hard-won. Their reliability is the stuff of production folklore. When timelines compress, briefs evolve mid-sentence, and “simple” requests become anything but.

TLO is trusted to solve problems quietly, efficiently, and without drama.

Across productions ranging from the calm to the complicated and occasionally the chaotic, TLO has provided comprehensive picture vehicle support for:

…and many more productions protected by NDAs, requiring a polite smile and a change of subject. These projects showcase the depth, flexibility, and behind-the-scenes problem-solving for which TLO is trusted.
