PURPLE HEART DAY
During the American Revolutionary War, the Badge for Military Merit decorated six known soldiers. Purple Heart Day on August 7 commemorates the creation of the oldest American military decoration for military merit, the Purple Heart and honors the men and women who are of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Created by General George Washington in 1782 to be presented to soldiers for “any singularly meritorious action”, the decoration was a purple, heart-shaped piece of silk bound with a thin edge of silver and the word Merit embroidered in silver across the face. It is unknown who designed the Badge of Merit. It is also unknown how many soldiers may have received the honor symbolizing the courage and devotion of an American Patriot. According to The Badge of Military Merit by Professor Ray Raymond, The “Book of Merit” where the names of possible recipients and their deeds were recorded has long been missing. According to the Badge of Military Merit by Professor Ray Raymond. Until Washington’s 200th birthday, the Purple Heart remained a Revolutionary War footnote. Washington’s order was allowed to lapse after the war ended and the Purple Heart wasn’t revived until Feb. 22, 1932, on Washington’s 200th birthday. Designed by Elizabeth Will, an Army heraldic specialist, the modern medal features a profile image of Washington. Once again, the medal was awarded for meritorious service, but now soldiers could also receive they’d been wounded by the enemy. The award was made retroactive World War I soldiers who had earned certain awards could apply for the Purple Heart. The first medal was presented to Gen. Douglas MacArthur, the Army chief of staff at the time. 8
At first, the Purple Heart was only available to soldiers, but in 1942 Congress changed the rules for earning the award, authorizing it only for wounds, and made it available to all services, including some civilians. Civilians who worked with the military, like Red Cross workers or war reporters, remained eligible for the award until 1997. Civilian employees of the Defense Department who are killed or wounded by an enemy now receive the Defense of Freedom Medal. by Claudette-Roulo

As there was not a consistent record kept since the award was established in 1932, we can only estimate the total number which have been awarded. At this time, it estimated that there may have been 1.8 million Purple Hearts awarded.

One of the things I often stress to my team and others as we work in Senior Living is that we are serving the people that made this Country, State and City great. As we see these frail struggling men and women, we often forget the vibrant history they lived. As I look over the years of Resident’s I have known, Lloyd probably had the most interesting history.

Upon arriving at the Community as Executive Director I learned that Lloyd was well known for his time served during World War II. He happened to be stationed in Hawaii aboard the USS California (pictured above) when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. If you know your history, you will know that while the ship was only moderately damaged by a torpedo and bomb a fire ultimately damaged the pumps resulting in the California sinking over the course of three days.

I realized after meeting Lloyd I never thought of what happened to the survivors after Pearl Harbor. I guess I figured after such a traumatic event they were all sent home. In truth Lloyd continued in the Navy and four years later ended up on the USS Indianapolis on a top-secret mission to deliver parts of Little Boy, the first nuclear weapon used in combat. On July 30, 1945 the ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine and sank in 12 minutes. Of the 1,195 aboard the ship Lloyd was among only 316 that survived the sinking of the ship, dehydration, saltwater poisoning and shark attacks. While many would wonder how anyone could be so unlucky, Lloyd looked at how lucky he was. In his later years he loved to go to the casino and became known as Mr. Lucky. If you happen to find yourself in a Senior community take the time to visit with the people who live there. You may find that you are not only visiting with someone who witnessed history but who was an important part of it. Don’t be fooled by their frailty.
One of the sweetest gentlemen I knew turned out to have been a POW in WWII. I only found this out when a friend of his told me. Another Senior Living Community had a resident who had spent many years in prison for a murder he did not commit. He was exonerated and became the subject of a John Grisham documentary and also authored his own book telling his story. Over the years I have met a Rose Bowl queen, a runway model, attorneys, pilots, realtors, engineers and about any profession you can imagine. I once found out the pediatrician that I and my siblings had when we were very young lived at a community I worked at. Take the time to stop and find out about the lives of the individuals you meet in senior living communities. They carry a wealth of history that you may not hear anywhere else. As I said before, they are the people that played an important part in making this Country great.

According to Roy, the students literally soak up history. They are truly interested in what the veterans have to say. What I saw on my visit was a vibrant program, interested and interesting residents, and fully engaged staff. Now that is a winning combination any way you look at it. Our local newspaper was a fountain of information regarding goings-on, plus a little world news. And if you had anything to sell, you placed an ad in the hometown paper. And that’s where I spotted it,“Monkey for Sale!” It was only minutes after I hollered, “Momma, look!” that she jerked off her apron, turned the cook stove burners off, grabbed her purse, and we were headed into town in Dad’s old blue Ford pickup. She knew this kids heart’s desire, and that’s theonly reason I can think of that enticed her to goalong with such a crazy idea. Normally, she was themost down-to-earth, no-nonsense, conservativewoman, not to mention extremely frugal. But on thisday we were on a mission together. He was not what I’d expected. Not even close…He was a lot smaller than a chimp, and part of his tail had gotten frozen off at some time in the past.They never did tell us how that happened. ‘Course they never said why they were getting rid of him either. I began to frown at the creature in front of me and definitely started to rethink this idea, but Momma took one look at that winsome little face and fell in love. She loved anything that looked remotely like a baby, and I guess if you half-closed your eyes, he did sort of resemble a really ugly one! She didn’t give me time to think it over before she dug into her purse, pulled out cash, and he was all mine! They called him Cheeka and told us he was an eight-year-old spider monkey. It must have been a rough eight years, ‘cause he was sure a pitiful-looking specimen. He had a little bitty collar around his midsection and a leash attached to it to keep him from running off. We got out to the pickup, with him screeching and screaming while I attempted to hang onto him. I started out trying to hold him gently in my arms but he was having none of that. He couldn’t get away‘cause I was hanging onto his leash, so he wrapped himself around my neck and hung onto my hair with his little fingers. He was getting more riled by the minute.
"Momma loved anything that looked remotely like a baby!" Every time I gave a jerk on his leash he’d dive at my face with his mouth open and teeth gnashing. “Momma make him stop. He’s gonna bite me!” I was desperately trying to be heard above his high-pitched screech. We somehow managed to get inside the cab of the pickup, which infuriated him even more. I barely got seated when he jumped to the top of my head and proceeded to poop all over my hair and down the back of Dad’s seat cover! This was definitely not what I had in mind! I started crying louder than the screaming monkey. He was still in the midst of his apocalyptic fit, and Momma silently hunkered over the steering wheel with her knuckles turning white, staring straight ahead. It was a long three miles back to the farm. She never slowed down when we hit the dirt road and she was still moving fast when we careened into our driveway. I’ve often wondered what Dad and Grandpa thought when we slammed to a stop and leaped out with that darn monkey on top of my head. You only laugh because it wasn’t you…
