DR SERVICE LEARNING TRIP

By Senior Rabbi Jason Nevarez

Friends,
In Jewish life, few moments feel as powerful as sitting at the Passover Seder table. For thousands of years, Jews across continents and cultures have gathered to tell the same story: from slavery to freedom, from despair to possibility. The Seder is not simply a retelling of history. It is a ritual of memory, identity, and responsibility.
The Torah commands us: “V’higadta l’vincha bayom hahu” - “You shall tell your child on that day.” Not once. Not occasionally. But every year.
Passover reminds us that Jewish life does not sustain itself automatically. Each generation receives the story, cares for it, and passes it forward.
The Seder table itself reflects this truth. The matzah we eat echoes the bread of urgency our ancestors carried as they fled Egypt. The questions asked by children - Mah Nishtanah? - are the same questions Jewish children have asked for centuries. Even the act of leaning at the table, a symbol of freedom, connects us to a past we did not live but nonetheless inherit.
Passover teaches that Jewish life is always an intergenerational project.
None of us created the Jewish world we live in today. The communities, institutions, and traditions that shape our lives were built by people who came before us - individuals who believed deeply enough in the future of Jewish life to invest in it.
We are the beneficiaries of their vision. They built synagogues where prayers could rise. Schools where children could learn. Communities where Jewish life could flourish.
And now, in our own moment, we hold that same responsibility.
At Beth Israel, we often speak about the sacred work of community - the moments that unfold within these walls: children discovering Torah for the first time, families celebrating B’nei Mitzvah, couples standing beneath the chuppah, and loved ones gathering to remember those who have passed. It is here that
friendships are formed, questions are explored, and Jewish life is lived in its fullness.
These moments do not happen by accident. They are made possible because generations before us believed deeply enough in the future of Jewish life to build and sustain the spaces where it could thrive.
Today, we are living inside that inheritance.
Our campus - vibrant, alive, and filled with possibility - is itself the result of extraordinary vision and generosity from those who came before us. They imagined a Jewish future in San Diego that would be strong, welcoming, and enduring.
Because of them, we gather here today.
And now we have the opportunity to do the same for those who will follow.
Our Campaign for the Future is not simply about maintaining buildings or upgrading infrastructure. It is about stewardship - caring for the sacred spaces where Jewish life unfolds and preparing them for the generations still to come.
Among the meaningful additions envisioned through this campaign is the creation of a mikvah - a sacred space rooted in the Jewish idea of renewal. For centuries, the mikvah has been a place where individuals mark moments of transformation: before weddings, during conversion, at times of healing, and when beginning new chapters in life.
Immersion in the mikvah is a physical act, but it carries deep spiritual symbolism. One pauses, steps into living waters, and emerges renewed.
In many ways, this reflects the deeper message of Passover itself. Jewish life is sustained through cycles of renewal - moments when we pause, reflect on where we have come from, and prepare ourselves for what lies ahead.
As we gather around our Seder tables this yearsurrounded by family, friends, and generations sitting side by side - we will once again tell the story of our people’s journey from slavery to freedom.
But the Seder asks something more of us than remembrance. It asks us to imagine the future.
Look around your Seder table this year. Notice the faces of children asking questions, teens beginning to find their voices, parents guiding the conversation, grandparents carrying memories of Seders long past.
Jewish tradition reminds us that the story being told that night is not only about the past. It is about the future sitting at the table with us.
The question Passover quietly asks each generation is this: What kind of Jewish world will we leave for them?
The answer to that question is not written in a book. It is written through the choices we make today. By caring for this community. By strengthening the spaces where Jewish life unfolds. By investing in a future where Jewish learning, celebration, and belonging continue to thrive.
This is why I invite you to see yourself not simply as a participant in Beth Israel’s life, but as a stakeholder in its future.
Just as those who came before us built the community we now cherish, we now hold the sacred opportunity to prepare it for the generations who will follow.
This Passover, as we retell the ancient story of our people, may we also remember that Jewish history has always moved forward because ordinary people chose to invest in an extraordinary future.
And may we have the courage, and the vision, to do the same.
Wishing you and those you love a Zissin Pesacha meaningful Passover…
-R. Jason Nevarez

Dear Beth Israel Community,
For nearly 165 years, Beth Israel has been a place where Jewish life is lived fully and meaningfully, where generations have gathered to pray, learn, celebrate, and support one another through life’s most sacred moments. Our strength has always come from the people who call Beth Israel their community, and I am deeply grateful that you are part of this shared story. I’m writing today with two important updates.
Building for the Future Campaign, now in the Public Phase
We are excited to share that the Building for the Future Campaign has entered its public phase. This
community-wide effort will care for our 24-year-old campus and help fulfill a long-held dream: creating a progressive mikvah for San Diego. Together, we will renew the spaces where our children learn, where families celebrate Jewish joy, and where moments of comfort, connection, and new beginnings take place.
Thanks to the generosity of many Beth Israel members, we have already raised more than $8 million toward our $12 million goal. Now we are in the final stretch, and participation from members at every level will help bring this vision to completion. Beth Israel has always been built by the many, not the few.
I’m also pleased to share that Robyn Spiegel has been nominated as our next President-Elect. We are grateful for Robyn’s willingness to step forward in service to our congregation and to help guide Beth Israel into its next chapter.
Thank you for all you do to strengthen our community. I look forward to the progress we will make in the weeks ahead, and I hope you will join us in helping build a future worthy of Beth Israel’s remarkable legacy.
L’Shalom, John Lefter

Our 10th grade class traveled to Washington, DC with Reform Jewish youth from across the United States to lobby with the Religious Action Center. During this experience, our teens learned how the lobbying process works, developed and practiced speeches, and presented their perspectives on issues most important to them to local representatives. They focused on environmental justice, economic justice, and combating antisemitism. Our teens delivered thoughtful, powerful speeches and engaged meaningfully with representatives who offered feedback throughout the process. One of the biggest highlights of the trip was gathering together as a full group for a Havdalah ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial.

This December, our 11th and 12th grade students traveled to Israel as part of the Platt Youth to Israel trip, made possible through the extraordinary generosity of Linda and Shearn z”l Platt and the Jewish Federation of San Diego. This thoughtfully curated, immersive experience explored Israel’s rich history, the complexities of the region, and the realities of Israel during and in the aftermath of October 7th.
The journey also offered meaningful opportunities for our students to connect with peers from our sister region of Sha’ar HaNegev. Through shared experiences, cultural exploration, and unforgettable moments around Israeli food and daily life, our youth developed a deeper sense of peoplehood that broadened perspectives and left a lasting impact.

Beth Israel congratulates member Silvana Christy, recipient of the Anne Ratner Award for Extraordinary Leadership from the Jewish Federation of San Diego Women’s Philanthropy. This distinguished honor recognizes sustained leadership, philanthropic excellence, and an enduring commitment to strengthening Jewish life in San Diego.
For decades, Silvana has quietly and steadfastly helped shape Jewish life in our community. With humility and vision, she has built community, inspired generosity, and led with purpose. We are proud to celebrate her extraordinary leadership and the lasting difference she continues to make.

Beth Israel is excited to welcome Keri Copans as our new Director of Advancement. With 25 years in the San Diego Jewish community, including leadership roles at Hillel of San Diego and the San Diego Jewish Academy, Keri brings deep experience and passion to Beth Israel.
She looks forward to meeting members, engaging with the community, and inspiring philanthropic support for Beth Israel’s next chapter.
Keri holds a BA from UC San Diego and a Master’s in Nonprofit Leadership and Management from USD. She lives nearby with her husband, Shaun, and daughters, Haley and Leah.

In accordance with psalmist wisdom, at 83 years old, Judy Myers and her family celebrated her second Bat Mitzvah on February 14, 2026 at Congregation Beth Israel. Her first one was in 1955 in Houston, Texas. Judy recently moved to San Diego to be closer to her two sons and their families. Jeff and Perla Myers live in San Diego with their children Daniel, Rebecca and Raphael; while Jeremy Myers and Susan Harris live in Los Angeles with their children Ben and Vin. Also present at the ceremony were Judy's brother-in-law, Michael Friedman of Chicago, and many, many friends from both Houston and San Diego.
Judy stays active by delivering Meals on Wheels, playing Canasta, swimming, and attending shows. She also loves to read and has participated in several book clubs. For her Bat Mitzvah project, she supported the Congregation Beth Israel initiative to collect art supplies for children in Israel.
Living Our Jewish Values in Action
This February, a group of Beth Israel teens and adults, led by Rabbi Nevarez, traveled to the Dominican Republic for a transformative week of service and connection.
Through shared work and meaningful cross-cultural exchange, they brought Jewish

values to life — especially chesed, lovingkindness in action, and tikkun olam, the responsibility to help repair our world. Together, they built relationships with one another and with local Dominican families, deepening their understanding of dignity, partnership, and global responsibility.
What they built was more than a house — it was connection, compassion, and a living expression of faith through service. The experience strengthened their commitment to caring for others and reminded us all that our tradition calls us not only to learn, but to act.

Our Bill & Sid Rubin Preschool offers the very best in Jewish early childhood education in San Diego. With low teacher-to-child ratios, beautiful indoor and outdoor play spaces, and a warm, welcoming staff, your child will thrive in a nurturing environment.
Weekly Havdalah and Shabbat services, along with holiday celebrations, are led by our clergy team, helping children build a strong Jewish identity, form meaningful friendships, and grow in a community rich in Jewish culture, tradition, and values as your family begins its Jewish journey.
Our play-based program supports each child’s unique needs, encouraging curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning while developing the social, emotional, and academic skills needed for the years ahead.
Schedule a tour and experience the magic for yourself!

They love traveling and tasting new foods along the way. When they were looking for a temple that reflected their values, they found Beth Israel, and it has been life-changing. Their son, Leo (11) attends the Lee and Frank Goldberg Religious School and sings in the choir, and from the very first visit, the community’s warmth and openness made them feel right at home.
