TURKEY DRIVE 2018 It is hard to imagine that HOPE’s food pantry will give out 398,448 meals this year. Likewise, it is hard to grasp that 87,256 meals will be served in HOPE’s soup kitchen. But you don’t have to imagine it. You can visit HOPE and see the people come every night for dinner. You can go twice a month to see the food pantry give groceries to families. These families would not be able to eat without HOPE. One in four children go to bed hungry every night. Beth El has been preparing meals for the HOPE soup kitchen for more than twenty years. Every year at Thanksgiving time, Beth El families have been generously donating $25 or more to purchase turkeys for our neighbors who would not otherwise have a turkey. To demonstrate his commitment to HOPE, Rabbi David Schuck has joined the HOPE Board of Directors. Please give generously once again this year in order to enhance our efforts of buying turkeys. Contribute a check for $25 or more, payable to Beth El Synagogue Center, and fill out a mini-paper turkey to add your name to our wall of donors. Your donation may be dropped off at the office or mailed to Beth El. Please write HOPE TURKEY DRIVE on the memo line of your check. RABBI’S MESSAGE Dear Friends, On Yom Kippur I spoke about the impact that mental illness has on individuals, their families, and their communities. One of my goals in delivering that sermon was to raise awareness. This is an issue that affects everyone, and though the Jewish community Rabbi David Schuck is often silent about mental illness, it is just as pervasive in our communities as it is elsewhere. The sermon highlighted three themes—the shame that prevents people from seeking the social support that they need; the broken mental health system that adds an additional emotional and financial burden on families struggling to meet the needs of a loved one; and the lack of institutional support within the Jewish community. I believe that we have the power to make a significant difference on this issue within our community. We can build emotional, financial, and social supports for people who are struggling with mental illness and their families. In order to do this, we must continue to engage in a public discourse around these issues, and explore them in depth. To this end, we will deepen the conversation at Beth El Synagogue Center on Wednesday, November 7th. We are collaborating with the Westchester Jewish Community Services in order to provide this next step to our community. (see cover) The evening will begin with a moderated panel discussion that will include the experiences of a parent who has supported her child through her struggles with mental illness, as well as an adult who will share his firsthand experiences managing bi-polar disorder. It is crucial that we have the opportunity to hear their stories and experiences, both so we can become more nuanced about what it means to struggle with these illnesses and so that we can better create supports for such families.
After the panel we will offer four breakout sessions about the following topics: Caregiver Burnout; Judaism and Suicide; CoOccurring Disorders; and Next Steps Here at Beth El—How we can offer practical and impactful support. Some of the presenters will be mental health professionals and rabbis from the larger community as well as from Beth El. It is crucial that we as a community take action. This night is intended for everyone, for people who know very little about the impact of mental illness and for those who have struggled to support a loved one through their own illness. Please make an effort to attend this program, both to educate yourselves as well as to support an initiative within our synagogue meant to raise awareness, as well as to begin taking concrete steps to offer support to families dealing with these issues. Whether you or a loved one has dealt with mental illness, I hope that you will attend the evening as an expression of your solidarity and support. I look forward to deepening the conversation on November 7th, and thank you for your sincerity and willingness to address an issue that has been relegated to silent suffering in Jewish communities for so long. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE as well as increasing natural lighting. Construction is scheduled to begin in January and be completed in April. We will share more news as things progress. The sanctuary renovation is the first project in a multi-phase capital campaign. We are in the process of developing a Mark Seidenfeld “master plan” to cover the many initiatives coming out of Journey, as well as major infrastructure projects necessary to maintain our aging facility. This planning is essential in order to undertake a capital campaign to raise the funds necessary to cover all we want and need to do. Thanksgiving is almost here, and, in the spirit of the holiday, I always take a step back to reflect on the moment and how much I have to be thankful for. The love and support of my family and friends are, of course, what I am most thankful for. And I am deeply thankful when I think of my Beth El family, all that this community does and represents, and how, at a time when so many Conservative synagogues are struggling and confused, our kehillah kedoshah— our sacred community—is willing to bravely move forward with an open heart and open mind and take action to ensure Beth El has a vibrant and meaningful future. This is a busy and exciting time at Beth El, with two transformative initiatives reaching major milestones and moving us forward to an exciting future. Journey, our strategic visioning and planning process, had its “hard landing” in October, and the renovation of our sanctuary, having been further approved by our Board of Trustees, moves into the next phase. Journey is a multi-faceted project, supported by a generous donation from Hazzan Ellen and Graham Arad in memory of their parents, engaging us to reimagine what it means to be a vibrant congregation—relevant to the lives of its members, to the Jewish future, and to the wider community. Our Journey Vision Team, fifty members strong representing a cross section of our community, has worked hard over the past year. Through meetings, interviews, listening forums, visits to other organizations, e-mail feedback, and more, it has learned from others and gained insight into the hopes, concerns, and desires of our members. In October, the Vision Team had an intensive two-day retreat at Beth El to synthesize what it’s learned over the last ten months and begin to articulate a strategic direction for Beth El and brainstorm initiatives that reflect the core principles the group has identified through Journey. This milestone transitions us into the next phase of Journey in which we will generate our strategic plan and engage the Board and the entire congregation to build on the work that has been accomplished so far. You’ll be hearing more about “Prototype Boot Camp” on December 2nd, 9:00 am–2:00 pm, This is an opportunity for us all to come together to develop prototypes for projects that put into action the ideas and principles coming out of Journey. If you have an idea, come to Prototype Boot Camp, bring your friends and a spirit of innovation and willingness to think outside the box to develop a prototype of what you envision. A detailed summary of the results to date will be presented to the Board of Trustees at its November meeting, and you can expect more in depth communications about Journey after that. In the meanwhile, be sure to save the date, December 2nd, 9:00 am –2:00 pm, for Prototype Boot Camp. If you have any questions, feel free to ask any member of the Planning Team or go to www.bethelnr.org/journey for further information about Journey and to submit any questions. As we move forward, we must be mindful of our traditions and open to innovation and experimentation as we build towards a vibrant future together. The sanctuary renovation project, made possible through the unprecedented, generous, matching donation by the Loewentheil family, is moving forward. The Board of Trustees approved the plans once again at its September meeting, and the architects are hard at work finalizing drawings to be filed with the City of New Rochelle. As presented at the open meetings with the congregation, we are creating a more intimate and flexible environment with better acoustics and accessibility, while maintaining the iconic elements of our sanctuary we all love. We will be replacing the fixed pews with movable seating, creating a center bimah to allow for prayer leaders and Torah readers to be more immersed in the congregation, adding an extension to our existing bimah to allow for the Rabbi and others to be closer in to congregants when they speak, installing a lift to provide access to the bimah for those who need that assistance, improving acoustics, and installing new lighting,

OPEN BEIT MIDRASH: NOVEMBER Each week (on alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays), Open Beit Midrash attendees will study Jewish texts—ranging from Chassidic thought to Jewish law—with Beth El’s Rabbi David Schuck and Rabbi Zach Sitkin as well as Rabbi Ethan Linden, the executive director of Ramah Berkshires. Each Rabbi will focus on a different topic each week and you can choose which session you’d like to attend. In addition to the weekly classes, scholars from around the NY area will teach once a month on topics related to their respective fields—from prayer and ethics to contemporary Jewish issues. Dr. Devora Steinmetz serves on the leadership team for special programs at Drisha in the United States and Israel. She has taught Talmud and Rabbinics at Drisha, the Jewish Theological Seminary, Yeshivat Hadar, and Havruta: a Beit Midrash at Hebrew University. She also consults for the Mandel Foundation and works at Gould Farm, a therapuetic community for those struggling with mental illness. Dr. Steinmetz is the founder of Beit Rabban, a day school profiled in Daniel Pekarsky’s Vision at Work: The Theory and Practice of Beit Rabban. She is the author of From Father to Son: Kinship, Conflict, and Continuity in Genesis and Punishment and Freedom: The Rabbinic Construction of Criminal Law.

Beth El has invited Fardeen Ghafoor and his family to meet with the congregation on December 1st, following Kiddush lunch. There will be an opportunity to hear Fardeen’s story and engage with the community answering any questions about his and his family’s experience. The Ghafoors arrived in the United States as SIV (Special Immigrant Visa) immigrants last November 15th, from Afghanistan, through the combined efforts of the U.S. State Department, HIAS, and the Interfaith Council of New Americans Westchester (ICNAW). Fardeen will discuss his journey to America and settling in a new land. His wife and three children will be joining him.

our sanctuary is physically accessible, celebrating Pride Shabbat together, buddying with someone unable to sit through services while his family stays in the sanctuary, introducing the beauty of our holiday traditions to someone unfamiliar with Jewish ritual, helping anyone who is interested to feel a part of our congregation. We work to make Beth El a comfortable and safe Jewish home for young and old, weak and strong, content or struggling, of every color and background. In an effort to share this story, the Keruv Committee is working on developing an inclusion page for the Beth El website. Rabbis often speak of how Abraham’s tent was open on all four sides, so that visitors felt welcomed regardless of the direction from which they approached. In today’s world, the Internet has become a frequent pathway to Judaism and synagogue life. We have to make sure we are holding that door to Beth El open. On the new Keruv inclusion page we create for our website, in addition to describing our mission, activities, and programming, we hope to have links to other relevant resources and, of course, our contact information. Until then, keep a look out in the Shabbat Announcements and the Keruv page of the Beth El Bulletin for our upcoming programs. Please feel free to contact us with your suggestions, needs or concerns. I love the holiday of Thanksgiving! Both modern psychologists and ancient rabbis agree on the tremendous benefits of expressing gratitude; it’s uplifting to focus on the blessings in our life. That is certainly a part of what makes the holiday great. The additional themes of family and feasting don’t hurt either. However, for me the beauty of the holiday goes beyond these themes. Thanksgiving is an inclusive holiday. As a child, as one of the only observant Jews in my public-school grade, I could fully embrace the holiday and not feel like I had to choose between my American and my Jewish identities. Thanksgiving allowed me to be part of the all-pervasive “holiday season.” Never mind that my grandparents had traveled to America in the 20th century, we were all made to feel we were the cultural descendants of the Pilgrims and Native Americans who celebrated that first feast together. After all, none of us were literal descendants. The Thanksgiving story is all about natives welcoming strangers to their home, sharing foods and customs, and, through their friendship, helping them to overcome adversity. What a feelgood part of our history. That is the Beth El Keruv story as well. We are all about inclusion: Beth El regulars welcoming visitors to our synagogue home, respecting diversity, learning from one another, and helping each other overcome whatever challenges we may face. It is our feel-good story. Inclusion here takes many forms, from assisting the mourner to find the right page at daily minyan to ensuring that

Last month we received a check, as a thank you, from The National Mah Jongg League for the number of cards purchased through our Sisterhood for 2018. As this month draws to a close we will come together with our dear friends and family to celebrate Thanksgiving. As a pre-teen my sister and I had the opportunity to view the Macy parade from the living room of Rabbi Louis Gerstein, z”l, of the Spanish Portuguese Synagogue and then attend a Thanksgiving service in their sanctuary. That exciting trip into the city with our father, seeing the parade, meeting the Rabbi and his family, and attending the Thanksgiving service created unique memories that are dear to both me and my sister. Welcome to November. For me, this is a beautiful month of the year. The weather is usually good so I can go about my business without much of the snow and ice of winter or the excessive heat of summer. Sometimes, as I drive to Beth El, there are still rich colored leaves clinging to the tree branches, adding to the beauty of the landscape around me. It helps me feel joyful. I also feel pleased when I look at the programs and activities we have on our agenda for this month. Sisterhood is selling tickets to the November 10th concert of The Symphony of Westchester at Iona College, Murphy Hall. Beth El member, Barry Charles Hoffman, will be conducting an “All Romantic Music Program,” featuring Israeli cellist Inbal Segev. On Tuesday, November 13th we are hosting an event with New Rochelle Hadassah and the Beth El SMART Group, featuring our own Sharon Spenser. She will be talking about Jews of Northern Greece. The Butterfly Project is a call to action through the arts, using the lessons of the Holocaust to recall the dangers of hatred and bigotry through the painting of ceramic butterflies. Handmade ceramic butterflies are counted collectively to reach the goal of 1.5 million butterflies displayed around the world, a global memorial symbolizing renewed life.

Join our author talk and learn about Harry Greissman, raised in Brooklyn in the 1920’s and 30’s by his immigrant parents. Harry represented the Greatest Generation as he defeated the Nazis in World War II, became the first in his family to graduate college, led the exodus to the suburbs in Westchester, served for 40 years as a “Mad Men” in an anti-Semitic advertising agency, and retired to sunny Florida. His life is the subject of an interesting story. It reveals the message that we can all relate to Harry as an “every man” and take away insightful lessons on how to live and view our own lives in an era of struggle and discontent.

NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS WHAT A DIFFERENCE A MOVED FENCE MAKES Once all flat sand and sidewalk, Playground #1 offered little alternative for gross motor play beyond the climbing structure. There was no shade of a tree under which to take a break, no grassy area on which to play. Simply moving the fence outward to now encompass the area that once stood just outside our reach, opened up a world of possibilities and discoveries Moving the fence gave children expanded exposure to nature diversity, i.e soil, grass, tree, insects. The soil and grass provide additional sensory experiences to the sand. The tree is alive and provides shade, texture of bark and greater access to its leaves and seeds. The children even came upon a praying mantis (which would never be crawling on a sandy space) and it became an impromtu lesson (which then expanded to the classroom with
books about praying mantises) supporting inquiry and assessment skills, planning skills, mindfulness of others, care of the world, etc. There is also a hill that allows the children the opportunity to roll down, run down, and drive down on various vehicles. In addition, there is now a chance to engage in risky play through the rolling. What’s the best speed? How do I stop? When to stop? What about with other people around and/or in the way? With all these rich experiences, there has been a lot of social interaction and engagement in the new space. The valuable and enriching activities inspire the children to share it with others, discussing and inviting others to join in the activities. What a difference a moved fence can make! With a fun-filled month of October behind us, we are thrilled that the year is off to a strong start! From the Sukkah Walk to our family Apple Picking event and fun, social programming for all of our youth groups, this month was tons of fun! We had our first Family event—Apple Picking, Shabbat dinner for over twenty-five teens (9th-12th graders) hosted by Rabbi Schuck and his family, Ruach (K-2nd graders) and Chaverim’s (3rd-5th graders) Animal Day to mark Parashat Noach, almost twenty middle schoolers at Sky Zone with Kadima (6th-8th graders), and so much more. We are hosting a No School Party on Election Day, so come party with Beth El! Drop your kids off at Beth El from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm so that you can head to the polls and vote. We’ll have relays, a movie, and snacks. Everybody in Kindergarten through 12th grade is invited; 6th-12th graders are invited to volunteer and help with the kids and other projects in our department for community service hours. Dismissal Procedures for Religious School We have a new dismissal procedure for Thursday evenings, between 5:40 pm and 6:10 pm, every Thursday that Religious School is in session. Cars will enter the parking lot through the entrance closer to North Avenue (in the exit lane) on Northfield Road, looping through the parking lot and snaking up to the front entrance, picking up children at the red doors by the Office of Youth and Family Engagement. Families received color-coated cards for each of their children with their name and class listed. Parents/caregivers will hand one card to Stephanie, who will send someone to get your child and your child will hand you back your card when they enter the car. For those who prefer to park, use the second entrance on Northfield Road, further from North Avenue. Educators will be stationed outside so that the path to the second and third parking lots are accessible to anyone needing to enter or exit the building. If you are parked and plan on leaving our building at this time, please park in the second and third parking lots. All Religious School dates are listed at right for your convenience. Treats for Troops Are you candied out? Why not donate that candy to a great cause? On Veterans’ Day, November 11th, we will host a site for a program called Treats for Troops through an organization called Soldiers’ Angels. The Treats for Troops program will ship our donated candy to deployed service members around the world or distribute to veterans in VA Hospitals across the country for a sweet treat. This year, Treats for Troops is hoping to collect 17,000 pounds of candy for our troops and veterans. After Kehillah on Sunday morning, November 11th, we will package candy for our troops. But what about helping those who don’t wish to help themselves—and want us to do the work for them? What if we want to help and we know it’s the right thing to do—but our parent doesn’t want us to (for no good reason)? What if helping means violating a religious prohibition (It’s Shabbat. It’s Yom Kippur, etc.)? What’s the right thing, according to Jewish Tradition, to do? How does the Talmud flesh out these issues? We will study the Talmudic text on its own terms, without preconceived notions. Our goal is not information, but immersion—an opportunity to “plug in” to the process of learning. All levels welcome. God, Gender Identity and Sexual Ethics in Contemporary Judaism with Rabbi Molly Karp
This course explores ideas of Divine and human gender as expressed in Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism) and other Jewish literature, along with issues of sexual ethics, gender identity and sexual orientation in contemporary Judaism. We will also look at lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (or questioning) challenges to traditional Judaism, including same-sex marriage, and responses to these challenges in contemporary streams of Judaism. Materials will be supplied by the instructor along with suggestions for additional optional reading. No previous knowledge needed. Our eight remaining Wednesday mornings at Beth El are November 7, 14, 21, 28; December 5, 12 19; and January 2; 9:30 am-11:45 am.
