RABBI’S MESSAGE At this season there are many special end-ofthe-year programs taking place. To be sure, our eyes Rabbi are focused on Melvin N. Sirner the summer and beyond, but it is important to pause and reflect upon all that has been accomplished in the past year. We at Beth El Synagogue Center are proud of our extraordinary program of religious, social, and educational activities. Rooted in the traditions of our people, we are continually seeking to bring
the joy and celebration of Jewish life to more and more in our community. At this time, I am reminded that all we have achieved is a result of a dedicated professional staff, working side by side with an exceptional group of men and women who are our volunteers. Without our lay leadership and their assistance, we would surely accomplish much less. At this time of transition, as a new slate of Officers and Trustees are elected for the synagogue and our affiliates, we express our gratitude to those who are completing their terms of office. Please know that this synagogue is indebted to you for your leadership and
vision. I wish to single out our outgoing president, Aaron Fleishaker, who has served so ably for the past three years. Aaron’s commitment to the well-being of Beth El is palpable. His public speeches, his regular Bulletin articles, and his presence at meetings and in the halls of Beth El are reminders of his great commitment to our shul and its well being. NOTES FROM THE HAZZAN June is my favorite month of the year. My birthday is at the beginning of the month, followed soon after by Father’s Day, giving me a lot to look forward to in June. The weather is always decent, and usually wonderful (it has yet to snow on my birthday). And the feeling of wrapping up another year, both academically and with major Jewish holidays, is usually one of both relief and excitement. Although things do slow down just a bit over the summer, Beth El is still very busy during the month of June. The Israel Day Parade (June 1) and Shavuot (June 4-5) start off the month, followed by the annual performance of the Tzofim (Israeli Scouts) (June 8). We then head off to the wilderness for our annual Beth El Family Kallah (June 13-15), which is always a fun and refreshing Shabbat away. And, of course, Beth El comes alive over the summer when Beth El Day Camp is in session (June 30-August 15). We also spend the month of June doing a lot of preparatory, behind-the-scenes work for the programming year ahead. In addition to discussing and debating programming amongst our professional staff, I have a
great group of volunteers who form the Programming Think Tank, lending their views and ideas as well. We brainstorm together to help shape and improve major congregational programs at Beth El, finding ways to reach more members of our congregation in meaningful ways. It is a daunting but exciting task. There were many successful programs and events this past year that touched all pockets of our membership. We began the programming year last August with the Family Drive-in-Movie. The autumn brought special Selichot and Simchat Torah programs. We marked important dates on the calendar, including Kristallnacht, Veterans’ Day and Yom HaShoah. We had two scholar-in-residence weekends, a strong Day of Service program for all ages, and a congregation-wide B.E.S.T. Shabbat dinner event. And throughout the year, we had our large-scale multigenerational programs, including a Hanukkah Shabbat Dinner (this year during Thanksgiving weekend), What’s a Jew To Do Day, Purim, Passover University, and our most recent big success, the Yom HaAtzma’ut Fair. It was a very busy
programmatic year. This June, I want to invite each of you to share your ideas with us as Hazzan Jamie Gloth well. I know that for many, summer helps get the creative juices flowing. We need your input. We want to hear your voice. What programs would you like to see at Beth El? How can we improve our longstanding programs? What would pique your interest to get you more involved? Let us know! Our Sages teach, “K’fum tza’ara agra,” which means, “The reward is proportionate to the effort.” (Avot 5:24). This maxim is true in all walks of life and can be especially true in the world of congregational life at a synagogue. Welcome to the thirty-third and final edition of my President’s Bulletin article. This was a difficult article to compose as I had (as usual) about a million ideas in my head, but had to limit it to a reasonable size. So, I hope you have enjoyed my prior articles and are now asking “why the Sinatra lyrics”? I’m sure I began my term with the same reservations and trepidations of most of the presidents who came before me. Would I be able to do the job? Will I make people angry? Will Beth El no longer feel like a home to me? Well, I am so happy to say that after three years, I feel like we did some good things together, we’ve had a lot of fun, I made quite a few new friendsm and for every “regret” I have at least 100 or more wonderful moments that took place at Beth El, which feels even more like a home to me now than ever before. As a result of this, the only thing I feel like saying over and over again is thank you.

I have never hidden the fact that I loved being president of Beth El Synagogue Center, and it will, in some respects, be difficult when it ends. But the one thing that I know for sure is that I am leaving Beth El in great hands. Sam Berger, my dear friend, will be a sensational president. He is talented in so many respects and will bring a new enthusiasm and many new ideas to the congregation. He is also lucky to have such great group of officers to serve with. He will also have the luxury of having Erica Leventhal, our superb Executive Director, by his side. There is nothing I can say to Erica to thank her for her incredible performance during my term. If she can make me look good, imagine what she will do for Sam. Finally, back to Mr. Sinatra. I know every president leaves his or her own mark on Beth El. I hope you will all agree, “I Did It My Way.” I think you all know by now how I sign off on all of these letters. Well “Almost President Berger” asked me if he could continue this tradition and I will be thrilled to see it continued. So for the last time from me, See you in shul, Aaron J. Fleishaker

RECOGNIZING OUR VOLUNTEERS Beth El is blessed to have many hard-working volunteers who make our congregation a special place. To help recognize their extraordinary work, the Dinner Dance Parking Space in our front parking lot has been designated by Jayne and Darren Peister, who won the spot in the Live Auction at the Dinner Dance, to recognize our Beth El members who “go above and beyond” to enhance our community. Each quarter, a Beth El volunteer will be recognized and thanked for his or her contributions with the exclusive use of the parking space. For the months of July, August, and September, we are pleased to bestow this recognition on MICHAEL GREENBERG for his work in bringing exciting new exhibits to the Kanner-Kurzon Museum and his efforts to set up each exhibit so beautifully. ISRAEL AFFAIRS From the Keruv Committee . . . This past year has seen Keruv programs and feel outside the broader community. COMMITTEE PRESENTS:
A DIFFERENT KIND OF PRO-ISRAEL OPPORTUNITY
Most members of Beth El Synagogue Center are supportive of Israel and many even have family members living there. We join and support many organizations that support Israel—AIPAC, Jewish National Fund, World Jewish Congress, and more. A different kind of pro-Israel organization is Volunteers for Israel. This organization relieves military or civilian personnel from doing simple, but necessary, work. Some jobs done by volunteers include checking medical equipment, removing radiators from old jeeps for use as a backup, painting truck wheels, pitching tents for the troops, and other tasks. When I participated in Volunteers for Israel two years ago, I was assigned to a military base near Be’er Sheva. For two weeks, I lived and worked on the base during the week and spent the weekends sightseeing with members of my team. The highlight of my experience occurred when a relative invited me to attend an Israeli concert. When my friend and I were ready to leave the concert during the intermission, the lead singer of the headline group asked us to stay until after the intermission. He wanted to introduce us to the audience so they could express their appreciation, saying: “Anyone can send money to Israel, but it’s different when you come personally to help us.” For more information about this group, contact Richard Aronow at rkajra1@yahoo. com, or visit the VFI website at www.vfiusa.org. at Beth El Synagogue Center that focused on making the synagogue more open, inviting, and accessible to people who may have felt on the margin of organized synagogue life. Here’s a recap of some recent activities. In April, we invited a speaker over a Shabbat weekend, who discussed the difficulties of people whose sexual orientation is different from that customarily considered to be “usual and ordinary”—that is, those in the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community. Rabbi Steven Greenberg, an Orthodox Jew, a rabbi, and an openly gay man, spoke to the congregation about his own life experience. He also discussed the Jewish community and the Halacha relating to this subject. He gave three talks at Beth El during his visit—after Friday night’s Shabbat supper, the D’var Torah at Shabbat morning services, and a post-Kiddush talk. These sessions were well attended, interesting, and informative. Another group that Keruv is trying to facilitate is for single, mature people over the age of fifty. Programs are under development, in conjunction with other organizations in our area, to foster social connections for this group. You may have heard the phrase “It’s a couples’ world.” Many people who are widowed, divorced, or unmarried find themselves socially alone
We are trying to help people connect and reconnect socially and feel that they are an integral part of the community. Keruv has not lost its focus on the intermarried families in our community and the impact intermarriage has on them. Many who marry out of their faith have not thought about the issues that can arise in a marriage because of the differing religions and cultures they bring to the marriage. They struggle to find ways to meld their backgrounds, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. Often they cannot envision the issues that will arise as they build their lives together. For them, it’s enough that their engagement/marriage means that they have navigated a milestone in life. Their decision impacts them and their families, sometimes in ways they could not have imagined. We have provided opportunities for them to talk about this in a group setting, with others experiencing the same situation, in a series of discussions called “Let’s Talk About It.” These conversations are held in private homes. If you have any thoughts or ideas on subjects that Keruv ought to consider, please contact me through the Beth El office, or at my home. Sisterhood Scene It is hard to believe that my two years as president of Sisterhood is concluding. It has been a bittersweet time personally. I have sustained the loss of my husband, Milton, and moved from Westchester. My Sisterhood sisters have supported and encouraged me throughout the turmoil. Thank you all for being there when my family and I needed you. I thoroughly enjoyed my time serving Sisterhood. Many, many thanks to all the ladies who worked so hard and tirelessly alongside me to present successful and funfilled events and to rewrite the Sisterhood Constitution. During my term, we have had successful fundraisers, which enabled us to help Beth El Synagogue Center and the Beth El community. I turn the post over to a truly capable, dedicated, and outgoing woman— Barbara Horowitz. Congratulations Barbara! May was a busy month in Sisterhood. The Annual Joan Freedman Sisterhood Shabbat took place on Saturday, May 10th. Victoria Fisher once again organized and choreographed a beautiful and meaningful service. Yishar koach to Vicki. A few days later, on Tuesday, May 13th, Sisterhood members voted on both the slate of officers
for the next term and the new Constitution. Joan Atlas undertook this daunting task, and we thank her. Following the meeting there was a discussion on Organ and Tissue Donation and the Jewish Perspective. Many thanks go to Carole Graham, Lauren Berger, Sandy Gruenberg, and Barbara Horowitz for putting this presentation together. Carole and her husband, Jeff Graham, spoke to us from their personal experience. Jack Gruenberg spoke with us and answered our questions regarding the Jewish perspective. Our final May event was the Annual Spring Gala on Thursday, May 29th, honoring Miriam Schwarz. It was an elegant evening with many of our members and friends of Miriam in attendance. So many wonderful things were said about a woman who truly deserves the praise. In the month of June we will end our year by installing our new slate of officers on Tuesday, June 10th, at 7:30 pm. I hope you can all attend. Congratulations to our officers. I wish you a restful summer, and will see you in the fall as I continue my support of Beth El Sisterhood. SEYMOUR TAFFET’S ART IN THE KANNER-KURZON MUSEUM Saturday, June 21st, through Sunday, July 27th Sculptures, watercolors, and photographs by the late Seymour Ta f f e t w i l l be displayed in Beth El Synagogue C e n t e r ’s Kanner-Kurzon M u s e u m , beginning on Saturday, June 21st. Seymour (Sy) Taffet, the father of Congregation Kol Ami member Adele Morton, grew up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and attended Stuyvesant High School. After graduation, he studied commercial art in an art school (name is unknown). Later, he worked in advertising and became an art director at Grey Advertising and then at A, C & R. He left to form his own business as an art consultant for various advertising firms. After Mr. Taffet retired, he started sculpting, as well as painting watercolors
and taking photographs. He exhibited at the Salmagundi Club and at various libraries on Long Island. Many of Mr. Taffet’s works of art will be included in the Kanner-Kurzon Museum exhibit. There will be an opening reception on Sunday, June 22nd, from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm. Everyone is invited to join Adele Morton there and discuss her father’s work with her. You can also visit the museum whenever the synagogue is open. If you
find that the room is locked, please request the key from the Beth El office or from the greeter at the front door. Adele has agreed to sell any of the pieces displayed. If you make a purchase, 25 percent of your purchase price will be considered a donation to Beth El Synagogue Center.

NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS There were so many exciting moments happening in the Nursery School when we celebrated Israel’s sixty-sixth birthday! Activities included planting flowers, squeezing fresh orange juice, eating humus and pita snacks, live animals on our “mini kibbutz,” visiting the Kotel, digging for archeological treasures, and more. Did you know that the Israeli flag is based on the blue and white Jewish tallit, the prayer shawl? Our children know that now! We knew we had forged a strong connection for the children to the land of Israel when we asked the question, “Who wants to go to Israel one day?” and everyone raised their hands!

What a year this has been for the Religious School Parent Organization! At the time this is published, our students will have their eyes set on their summer plans and look back on a successful and fun year. We wish a hearty mazal tov to all of the graduates! Our final event of the year is our second annual Summer Send Off, our celebration of the Religious School year, and a time to wear your camp colors with pride. Spend the morning at the Celebrate Israel Parade and then join us in the evening on Sunday, June 1st. We hope to see the students and their parents at this fun event. Watch your e-mail for details! This is also a good time to look back on the fun year we have had and wish a TODAH RABBAH to all the parents who helped out! • We started the year with Welcome Tours for new students and their families. Let us know if you are interested in helping out next September! • Sunday morning Zumba has been going strong—we’ve burned mega calories and raised over $500 for the Parent Organization. Thanks go to Carrie Fox for her dedication in organizing it every week and the continued pep talks to encourage participation. Deborah Solymar, and Erica Bases for their support. Parents’ Night Out in October was a fun way to get to know parents by their real names, not just as “Aaron’s mom” or “Lucy’s dad. Our first parent/child yoga class was a blast! Look for this activity again in the fall! Thanks go to Anne Reis for spearheading it. The Common Core talk we held gave some great perspective to parents wanting to know more about the topic. Thanks go to Rachel Casanova for volunteering her dad to teach us the way! The Parents’ Organization contributed financial support to the Nursery School’s “Birthday in a Box” mitzvah project, helping provide birthday supplies to families in need. And lastly, thanks go to Sharon Brown for her leadership in the VERY successful Mixed Bags Fundraiser program. Also, thank you to all who participated by selling (or buying bags). All of these events required promotion, flyers, calendar coordination, and more. We couldn’t have done it without Andrea Moldoff and Jen Vegh. Thank you for your support and tireless help!

With summer approaching quickly, we bring our exciting Youth Community year to a close. It was such a fantastic year of programming, thanks to our advisors Bekkah Gold and Carly Shapiro, as well as our basketball coaches and our many parent volunteers. Highlights for our year included the All Youth Community Family Sukkah Decorating, Pre-Pesach Ice Skating (photos below), and Field Day; the Purim Carnival, Ruach’s Groundhog Day, Chaverim’s Magic Lesson, Kadima’s Cook Off, and USY’s many lounge nights. We wish all of our youth a safe, fun, and meaningful summer. There are so many ways to find Jewish moments, but summer flies by and soon it will be fall, so don’t wait! Plan for some Jewish experiences now!
