BETH EL WELCOMES SAM BLUSTEIN RABBINIC INTERN FOR 2018 - 2019 Beth El Synagogue Center is pleased to have Rabbi Sam Blustein as part of our staff for the coming year. As you will read in Rabbi Schuck’s introduction on page 4, this is a part-time position. Rabbi Schuck writes, “In conjunction with the Rabbinical School of the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS), a rabbinical student will work in our synagogue” . . . and “will have the opportunity learn about the rabbinate and American synagogue life, as well as add his talents to our community.” To learn more, please see page 4.

Hi all! I’m a fourth year rabbinical student at the Jewish Theological Seminary. For the last year, I’ve had the pleasure of working with Beth El families in the Religious School as the Rosh Tefillah, teaching prayer through music. In addition, this past year I served as the song leader/prayer leader at Chizuk Amuno Congregation, in Baltimore, Maryland, bringing my love of music and prayer to congregants of all ages. I’m a “Ramahnik” as well, working for the past two summers at Camp Ramah in Wisconsin as the head song leader. My two big rabbinic passions are creating meaningful, musical davening experiences and working with young professionals and young families to bring meaningful Jewish experiences into the home. I am excited to expand my role next year to serve the greater congregation, and to bring my passions to serve the Beth El Synagogue Center community. I can’t wait to meet you! Sam Blustein, Rabbi

RABBI’S MESSAGE The intern we were matched with is Sam Blustin and you can read about him on the cover of our Bulletin. We have been blessed with Sam’s presence in our community for this past year as one of our music and tefillah leaders in our Religious School on Sundays. He is a very gifted Jewish educator. Rabbinical students in this internship program focus on skill development as well as pay attention to some of the complexities of their emerging rabbinic identities. The learning that occurs is facilitated through intentional, sustained practices, such as theological reflection, weekly supervision, a learning agreement, and contextual social analysis of the synagogue. On site, Sam will be a leader in many of the areas of clergy work—he will teach, lead parts of services and Shiva minyanim, facilitate family education programs, deliver sermons, and make himself available to support the pastoral needs of those who come to feel connected to him. He will be at the synagogue one day a week and he will spend one Shabbat a month with us. We should all be very proud that the Jewish Theological Seminary has entrusted Beth El with the sacred duty of partnering with them to train and educate the next generation of Conservative Rabbis. Beth El is now a laboratory for rabbinic education. In addition to our contribution to the field, I have no doubt that we will be deeply enriched by this experience. Please go out of your way to introduce yourself to Sam when he begins his work in our community in September. Your warmth, openness, and willingness to support him will be an important aspect of his rabbinic development and affirm the Rabbinical School’s trust that our community is one in which their students will be nurtured, challenged, and respected. Dear Friends, I am very excited to announce that Beth El has the exciting opportunity to help shape the education of future rabbis of the Conservative Movement. In conjunction with the Rabbinical School of the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS), a rabbinical Rabbi David Schuck student will work in our synagogue in 5779 / 2018-2019. He will be a rabbinic intern who will have the opportunity learn about the rabbinate and American synagogue life, as well as add his talents to our community. This is a new opportunity for Beth El. Although we have had students work as “interns” in our community in the past, this arrangement was privately made between the student and Beth El, and the student was not given specific support or resources from JTS. For this coming year, Beth El has been chosen to be a host site for an intern who will be part of the Rabbinical School’s Pearl and Jack Resnick Internship Program. This means that in addition to the work that he will do within our community, I will mentor him weekly, and he will receive group supervision through a required class in the rabbinical school. JTS also pays half of the intern’s salary, which means that as we invest in their students, they invest in our community as well.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: THE ANNUAL REPORT kehillah kedoshah, a sacred community, welcoming to all. As summer begins, we celebrate another source of joy and pride, with the annual reopening of our summer camp. Under the inspiring leadership of Julie Rockowitz and the team of counselors Mark Seidenfeld and staff she brings together each year, our halls are filled with singing, laughing, and ruach, our spruced up pool is filled with splashing and fun, our fields are taken over by sports and a variety of outdoor activities, and so much more. If you find yourself at Beth El during the week, I guarantee that you will have a smile and good feeling for the rest of the day from the energy, warmth, smiles, and giggles of the more than 250 children that love our camp. And I guarantee that just as we say in the registration form that, “Beth El Day Camp is open to all children regardless of race, color or national origin,” we will work to create a future where as these children grow up at Beth El, no matter their differences, they will always feel welcome and embraced by our community. What I can also guarantee you is that the summer will not be a quiet time for the leadership and staff of Beth El as we continue to work on all the plans and programs for the year ahead. And in the blink of an eye, our building will be buzzing with preparations for the High Holidays and we will be wishing each other a Shanah Tovah! But I do hope that you each take some time to relax, disconnect from the usual routine and stresses of life, and enjoy special moments with friends, family and even some time to yourself. This past Shabbat, as usual, I stepped out during musaf to set up the Shabbat Schnapps for Kiddush. As I walked in to the Fayer Ballroom, I was greeted by a room filled with rainbow flags on each table and a rainbow of tablecloths covering the tables. It was Pride Shabbat and I was overwhelmed by a sense of pride in our community and how we have evolved to embrace the LGBTQ and other historically marginalized communities. Under the leadership of Elise Richman and Nina Luban, our Keruv Committee took the lead in making Pride Shabbat a special experience. They invited Rabbi Aaron Weininger, who grew up at Beth El and was an active leader of our youth community, to deliver the sermon on Shabbat morning. In his introduction of Rabbi Weininger, Rabbi Schuck reminded us of how Jewish leaders and we as a community have to acknowledge our past attitudes and failure to accept members of the LGBTQ community into our spiritual homes. Furthermore, we must continue to work to ensure that all feel welcome, heard and respected at Beth El. Aaron spoke honestly of his journey and the difficulties he encountered, including his experience growing up at Beth El. And, how some very special people at college embraced him and modeled for him how a young gay man, passionately engaged with his faith and Jewish practice, can thrive as a member of an accepting community. His experience reminds us not only of the importance of being open minded and welcoming as a community, but how each of us individually can make a difference and deeply impact the life of another. As Aaron so insightfully pointed out, pain and love can come from the same source. As we strive to be the warm and welcoming community we say we are, and aspire to even deeper welcoming relationships, his message should be a constant reminder of the power of our words and actions. Pride Shabbat was an emotional and joyous morning, and provided important guidance for the journey ahead as we continually strive to be a

Tisha B’Av to Be Observed July 21st and July 22nd Tisha B’Av (the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av) marks the anniversary of the destruction of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem and is a day commemorating subsequent Jewish tragedies. It is a traditional day of fasting and mourning, which will be observed as follows:

8:20 pm, Mincha (in the chapel), followed by Seudah Shleisheit in the Board Room. After, we will daven Maariv and the chanting of the Book of Eicha in the Wiener Lounge. Shabbat ends at 9:10 pm and our fast begins.

Morning services will be held at 8:00am, without tallit and tefillin. Mincha services, with tallit and tefillin will be held at 1:30 pm. The Maariv service will bring the day to a close at 9:00 pm. Our fast ends. 5

VITALY UMANSKY EXHIBITS IN THE KANNER-KURZON MUSEUM SATURDAY, JULY 14th TO SUNDAY, AUGUST 26th

a curriculum developed in Reggio Emilia schools for young children in Italy after World War II). It took another two years for Vitaly to recognize that although teaching was great, the need to go back into the art world was greater. One year ago he left the world of education. Since then he has been working on various projects—a children’s book, illustrations for a poetry book, a graphic novel, a mural at Baruch College, and several more illustration projects. In addition, he has been actively exhibiting his work. This will be his third exhibit this year. This exhibit has a mixture of themes, but the dominant theme is Vitaly’s internalization of Judaism and Jewish history. That theme glistens ever so lightly through the work with hints of feelings of belonging to a group as well as escaping that group, of being swept by time while struggling with God, and of the inescapable grasp of history that (like it or not) pulls one into its arms and claims you. Everyone is invited to the artist’s reception on Sunday, July 15th, 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm. You may visit any other day since the synagogue is open daily, but if the room is locked please get the key from the Beth El office or from the greeter at the front door.

Vitaly was born in the Ukraine Republic when it was still part of the USSR. In 1990, after finishing the first grade in school, he emigrated with his family to Israel and grew up in Jerusalem. After finishing school he studied for a year in the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, which left an imprint that emerges frequently in his work. After Bezalel he decided to pursue an art education in New York. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology, but pressure to transform his education into income pushed him to search other paths. Two years later he received a Master of Science degree in Education from Sarah Lawrence College and he became a teacher. The Art of Teaching Program transformed him, and he temporarily abandoned his lifelong passion to produce art for the sake of his new passion, i.e., education. His first teaching job was in Beth El Nursery School. The birth of his first daughter Katia made him switch to a different school, closer to his home. Two years later, however, when his second daughter, Thea, was born he returned to Beth El in a new role as an Atelierista (an art professional following

Dr. Beth Breakstone to Exhibit in the Kanner-Kurzon Museum Saturday, September 8th through Sunday, October 14th Beth El member Dr. Beth Breakstone was a pathologist for many years, and is a long-time member of Beth El Synagogue Center, together with her husband, Dr. Ted Keltz. She was able to retire early from her career in pathology and could then pursue her dream of becoming an outstanding botanical and avian artist. Beth uses pan pastels to set down large areas of brilliant color, followed by colored pencil to add details. More recently,

she has been painting in acrylics and expanding her subject matter. Everyone will be invited to the artist’s reception on Sunday, September 16th, 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm (between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur). This brief summary is to alert you to her upcoming exhibit. MONDAY, JULY 23rd: THE ANCESTRAL SIN The Documentary that Shook an Entire Country • Winner – DocAviv 2017- Best Director & Best Research This is the story of Israel’s “development towns” in a chilling documentary as never told before. Testimonials and previously sealed transcripts reveal a method, an ideology, law enforcement practices and decision makers behind the “population dispersal” policies in the first two decades of independence. The film centers on personal stories from Yerucham, a development town in the Negev dessert, where the director and extended family (from Morocco) were placed. Their stories recount the price immigrant families pay, and the price still paid by Israeli society for the discriminatory policies of its Ashkenazi-dominated early years. Since airing on Israeli TV’s channel 13 in March, the film has been a frequent topic on TV and talk shows, and has been shown at special screenings for officials and military brass. Prime Minister Netanyahu and Minister of Justice Ayelet Shaked have both chimed in promising to expand access to the documents brought to light in the film. David Deri’s film is very important, motivating viewers to reflect, compare and develop insights and reflections on the past and present. You really shouldn’t miss this!

THURSDAY, AUGUST 2nd: KIPAT BARZEL/ COMMANDMENTS A prime-time TV drama about an Ultra Orthodox IDF Unit (Screening 3 Episodes) “Kipat Barzel” is about three ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) young men who have chosen to serve in the IDF despite the communal taboos associated with it. A play on words in Hebrew for the Iron Dome defense system (Kipat Barzel) and an Iron Kipa (Yarmulke) Inspired by the real-life young adults who choose to defy the strict conventions of their closed Orthodox societies and join the army, this powerful character-driven drama delivers a compelling story focusing on the dilemmas of personal and religious identity, and the desire to belong, alongside the need to express oneself and one’s values. The show follows on a growing interest in the lives of Haredim from secular society, who more and more are seeing members of the once-insular communities in the army and the workplace. The show also depicts the diversity of ultra-Orthodoxy’s many sects—with the protagonists hailing from three distinct communities—a subtlety rarely portrayed on the Israeli screen. 7

KERUV* KORNER SUMMER GREETINGS

Summer greetings from the Keruv Committee! In June, at our final meeting of the year, we saw “new beginnings” as we welcomed longtime congregant Carolyn Fox and new Beth El member Phyllis Steinberg to the Committee. We also started planning anew for the coming year. Keruv looks forward to continuing, under Elise Schepp’s able leadership, Let’s Talk About It informal meetings for parents, grandparents, and others connected to children who are intermarried or inter-dating. With Dorothy Fox at the lead, we will be revising the Beth El website to welcome members and strangers alike to an open, accessible synagogue and congregation. We plan to identify a guest presenter who resonates with our vision of inclusiveness, very much like our speaker this past winter, Chava Willing Levy, a remarkable, dynamic polio survivor who requires wheelchair support but insists that her needs are no more “special” than yours. We will work to • Ensure that Beth El again offers a “Quiet Room” during High Holiday and other services, • Assess interest in continuing our Kulanu Shabbat or yom tov service for children who cannot sit comfortably through a more standard service • Reach out to USY to determine how Keruv and younger generations might together help strengthen Jewish life at Beth El for all.

Throughout the coming year, not just on Pride Shabbat, Beth El will work to ensure that LGBTQ individuals know they are welcome to walk through our doors.

Sisterhood Scene As people go off on vacation and take a break from their everyday routines I want to take this opportunity to thank all the members of Sisterhood who participated in all our activities this past year. I also want to speak specifically about our activities that took place at the end of May. Sisterhood Shabbat, organized by Vicki Fisher and Janis DeMartini, enabled our members to stretch and grow as they led the congregation through the many parts of the Shabbat service. The new skills they learned to prepare for that morning are going to stay with them for the rest of their lives. Four days later we held our annual Spring Gala. This event, under the direction of Lauren Berger, Janis DeMartini, and Kathy Kafer, was a lovely tribute to Barbara Horowitz, who devotes so many hours of her life to Sisterhood and Beth El Synagogue Center. The women who worked behind the scenes to make this event so great are another example of the way Sisterhood women pool their talents and skills to create something beautiful and special. In the next few weeks Sisterhood will be

transitioning to a new way of communicating with ALL our members. The Executive Board has already joined our group. Next the General Board and the Honorary Board will sign on. Then our members at large will receive an e-mail invitation asking them to join our group. Please accept this invitation. It will allow you to become part of our electronic group so that we can communicate with you via e-mail. We will continue to communicate with you via our column in the Bulletin, but meeting reminders, flyers, invitations and surveys will be done via our Sisterhood Google Group. If you do not receive an invitation, contact Abby Wise at awise@bethelnr.org. The one piece of “snail” mail you can expect to receive from us this summer is our packet describing Sisterhood and our plans for 2018-2019. THE JOURNEY PLANNING AND VISION TEAMS ARE HARD AT WORK

PERSPECTIVE FROM A MEMBER OF OUR JOURNEY VISION TEAM Journey has been a great experience for me. Through this journey process I have learned a lot about myself and my community and it has taught me to open my eyes to new ideas and consider things that I would never have otherwise fathomed. My initial thought was how nice it was to have a large group of representatives put together to go on this journey together for the sheer practice of meeting new people and making the community feel more intimate and personal for me. As I have come to develop new relationships and have spent hours working together I find it really enriching to collaborate with such a dynamic group of people from all different backgrounds within the shul to help create a road map for the future of Beth El. While I believe our synagogue will naturally make some evolutionary changes that are necessary, I believe that through the dedicated work of the journey team and synagogue members who volunteer their time to be a part of this journey processâ€”board members, deeps dive groups, and subcommitteesâ€”I believe we can come up with some truly revolutionary changes that will

impact not only Beth El, but the larger Westchester Conservative Movement. The listening forums illustrated that everyone is eager to see Beth El and the Conservative Movement prosper and grow in the future. All demographics within our community have a vested interest in the longevity of our synagogue and Judaism. I believe that the inclusive nature and congregation led change and input will ultimate improve future commitments to change and trials of new ideas for many years into the future. I hope that the hard work we are all putting into this now will prove to be fruitful for many years to come. We have spent the last seven months exploring where we came from and where we are, and what people are looking for. We are now drafting some bold statements about key elements of what we find important and working on a mission statement. In the upcoming months we are going to work on prototypes to help us work towards the goals set in the bold statements. Julia Keltz, Vision Team Member

NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS As a tzedakah project this year, the Nursery School collected shoes to be donated to “Soles 4 Souls.” Our children and parents contributed generously, and we received a letter of thanks, which appears below.

Our Nursery School Staff ended the year on a high note. We all had dinner together in Queens. Then went to Citi Field for a baseball game, courtesy of Morah Lisa Kaufman, one of our twos teachers whose husband Harold is the executive director of communications for the Mets. We each got a terrific Mets swag bag and had wonderful cushioned seats to enjoy an almost perfect evening under the stars—the Mets lost to the Orioles! Many thanks to Harold and Lisa!
