Rabbi’s Message Dear Friends, I am writing from Israel, deeply grateful for the opportunity to study this summer at the Hartman Institute. Studying in Jerusalem with 150 rabbis from across the denominational spectrum is a rare privilege. In a world so often marked by despair, there is something sustaining and hope-giving about learning Torah with so many colleagues in our homeland. Our conversations move quickly from the page of Talmud to the political upheavals in America, the spasms of antisemitism throughout the world, and of course, Israel’s international isolation. Because of all of these things, being here feels especially poignant. I have felt politically homeless for the last three years, and this is the first time in a long time that I feel like I have a political community again. Let me explain.

According to recent Channel 12 polling, 60 percent of Israelis say they do not trust Prime Minister Netanyahu. Yet criticism of him, or of the extremist members of his government, does not require anyone to renounce their Zionism. Often, that criticism is itself an expression of their Zionism and love of Israel. Here, one does not have to choose between their Jewish identity and political conviction. In America, the opposite increasingly feels true.

Many of us are unsure where we can feel fully at home in today’s political landscape. How do we express our political and moral convictions without apologizing for our Jewish identities or commitments to Israel while our political allies further distance themselves from Israel and express problematic ideas about Jews? I do not expect this dilemma to disappear soon. In The Forward, Rob Eshman recently wrote about this sense of political homelessness and the failure of either party to articulate a serious vision for addressing Jewish concerns about Israel. He concluded with a challenge for American politicians and Jews: “Come with a vision, come with a plan, come with a path that offers the chance of a better life for the millions of Jews and Arabs who live there and aren’t going anywhere. Come with a pitch that shows American Jews that the full complexity of our concerns matters, and that your parties are capable of adapting to meet this moment.” He then added, “Don’t wait for a lane to open. Pick a party, and start opening one.” There is great wisdom in Eshman’s challenge. Political belonging is not simply given. It must be argued for, defended, and sometimes rebuilt. We should not surrender our parties to those who ask us to mute our Jewish commitments. Nor should we accept the false choice between moral seriousness and a love of Israel.

According to a recent poll from the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, most American Jews feel politically unrepresented by both parties. To feel fully at home in either party, many Jews increasingly feel pressure to mute parts of their Jewish identity or to compromise their moral and ethical commitments. For me, this dynamic has led to a political loneliness that I have never felt before.

Perhaps that is part of what I am feeling here in Jerusalem. In Israel, Jewish identity often correlates with political affiliation, but one is not required to check their Jewishness at the door to accommodate their political allies. The arguments are fierce, but they are arguments from within. In America, our task is harder. We must insist that our political homes make room for the full complexity of who we are.

I have watched both parties countenance, or quietly look away from, ideas about Jews and Israel that should have remained beyond the pale. If you told me a few years ago that an uncompromising opposition to the very idea of a Jewish state would be core to the political identity and convictions of the mayor of New York City, I would have assumed that you were paranoid. If you would have told me that the sitting Vice President of the United States would publicly rebuke Israel, saying that the US is “the only powerful ally they have anywhere left in the entire world,” and “You can’t just kill your way out of solving every single national security problem that you have,” I would have found all of this difficult to imagine.

This will require courage from our leaders and from us. We will need to speak with greater clarity, draw firmer moral lines, and resist the comfort of political camps that ask us to ignore what we know to be true. We may feel somewhat politically homeless. But we are not powerless. We still have a voice, a vote, and a people to whom we are accountable. It is critical that we exercise this power responsibly.

President’s Message As we look ahead to the High Holidays, I am both humbled and excited to begin my term as President of Beth El. In my wildest dreams, I never expected to become shul president. But I accepted this responsibility because Beth El is where so many of us find prayer, learning, friendship, lifecycle moments, and chesed. At a time when the wider world feels uncertain, I am honored to help strengthen our local kehillah. Many of you already know my family. Carrie and I met at Cornell, started our family in Manhattan, moved to New Rochelle in 2010 and immediately immersed ourselves in the life of Beth El. Our children Ilana, Jacob, and Naomi grew up in the Beth El Camp, Religious School, at services, in USY, and at Camp Ramah. My parents, Cindy and Ira, are now also members, which means that three generations of our family call this community home. Carrie, an attorney, has given countless hours to Beth El by serving on the Board, chairing committees, and quietly helping make things happen. Beth El is woven into our family’s life. My own Jewish foundation was built in my family, in my shul on Long Island, during many summers at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires, at college Hillel, and in the strong Jewish communities that shaped me as an adult. Those experiences taught me that Jewish community is built by people who show up: to sing, learn, argue, volunteer, teach, welcome, comfort, and return. These are qualities I hope we will continue to cultivate together. By profession, I am a scientist. As a Professor of Biochemistry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, I study gene regulation in cancer and in the neurodegenerative disease ALS. Running a research lab has taught me that good leadership requires both leading and listening. We may begin with a hypothesis, but real discovery comes from paying attention to what the data, and the people doing the work, are telling us.

Over three remarkable years as President, Lauren grew our membership, strengthened our finances, deepened our clergy team, and led this community with extraordinary devotion. She has also been a generous and patient teacher to me, walking me through the countless details, large and small, that the presidency entails, and modeling what dedicated, thoughtful leadership looks like. On behalf of the entire congregation: thank you, Lauren. Soon we begin our annual B’Yachad campaign, which as our largest fundraiser, helps sustain so much of what makes Beth El possible. I hope you will give in whatever way is right for your family. Every gift matters, and every gift is a generous investment in the community life that we build together. Synagogue leadership requires the same balance. Judaism distinguishes between mishpatim, laws whose wisdom is obvious, and chukkim, commandments whose reasons are not always clear. Similarly, a strong community needs both the courage to try something new and the humility to recognize the wisdom in what we have inherited. Center for Jewish Music at Beth El Singing As A Spiritual Practice Singing is more than just vocal music, it is a powerful, potentially transformative, mindfulness spiritual practice available to everyone, without exception. We encourage you to join us for our new, monthly sessions of Singing as a Spiritual Practice. While our voices allow us to communicate with one another every day, they also give us access to places in our soul that words cannot reach. When we laugh, our joy spills into the world. When we weep, the pain within us becomes tangible, something we can acknowledge, hold, and begin to heal. And when we sing together, especially simple wordless melodies (nigunim), we have a chance to experience the deepest yearnings of our soul. Singing as a spiritual practice is not limited to people with pretty voices or musical talent. It is a practice that is accessible to everyone. Are you shy about singing in a group? That’s normal. Don’t let that stop you! Singing in community is an

age-old Jewish spiritual practice that has the power to open your heart, awaken your spirit, and connect each of us with the divine. Beginning in October, we will offer Singing as a Spiritual Practice sessions each month. Join us! Rabbi Nachman of Breslov taught that within every person there is a point of absolute purity that is good, a point that can never be hurt or corrupted. The Irish poet and philosopher John O’Donohue, similarly, writes of a place within us that has never been wounded, where innocence, openness, and trust still abide. When we sing together, we seek to rediscover that place. We seek to nurture it, to allow it to enlighten us. We hope you will join us. Israel 360 | Staying Connected with our Israeli Family

Israel 360 ended another year of programming with a moving and informative program about the pervasive trauma that has gripped Israeli society. On May 27th, together with Beth El’s Mental Health Initiative, we hosted the Israel Friends network – an incredible organization responding to the crisis by providing mental health support through innovative online technology and a unique approach to care. We learned about the trauma Israelis are suffering and its impact on individuals, families and society at large from Alex Levite, their Director of Development, and the free telehealth support they provide through a nationwide network of psychologists, social workers and therapists. Alex was in conversation with Eli Wininger, IDF reservist with the EGOZ Special Unit, who shared his personal experiences having served hundreds of days in Gaza, and how Israel Friends was there for him and so many of his friends and family, and inspired him to spread the word about the organization and their life saving work. (Many people recognize Eli as “Batman” who ran many marathons around the world in memory of the Bibas family.). The trauma will continue and the demand for professional help remains, but through technology and human support Israel Friends is working to change things for the better.

We’ve spent the summer working on programming for the upcoming year and on Thursday, November 12th at 7:30pm, we will welcome Roots – a unique organization based in the West Bank/Judea & Samaria bringing together local Israelis and

Palestinians who are working to end the conflict between them through mutual recognition of each other’s connection to the land and by developing understanding and solidarity despite their ideological differences. Thanks to the generous support of Phyllis & Harvey Jay, we’ll be joined by Rabbi Hanan Schlessinger, Dir. of International Relations, and Khaled Abu Awwad, Palestinian Co-Dir., to share their personal experiences that brought them together, the work they’re doing, challenges they face and their hopes for the future. This should be a powerful and unique opportunity to hear from people on the ground with diverse backgrounds and perspectives working to foster co-existence and a peaceful future. Look for updates on other programs throughout the year. I want to end with a huge thanks to Tamar Tait, who has stepped down from our committee. Tamar has worked tirelessly as Chair of the Israel Affairs Committee for many years, and as Co-Chair of Israel 360 for the past 3 years. We’ve been blessed by her passionate commitment to Israel and endless effort to ensure our community’s continuing connection to our Jewish homeland and education about the important issues facing Israel and its people. Over the past year, we have continued to strengthen our facility through security improvements and building upgrades made possible by grants we have received. We are grateful for this funding, which allows us to enhance the safety of our synagogue while preserving the open and welcoming environment that is so important to our community.

As we gather for the High Holidays, we also extend our sincere thanks to our external security team, First Response Team, greeters, and our partners in the New Rochelle Police Department for their dedication and support in helping make our services safe and welcoming for all.

Security is everyone’s responsibility. If you notice something that seems unusual or out of place, please communicate with the Security personnel in the booth at the entrance to Beth El.

As we prepare to welcome our community for the High Holidays, the Security Committee continues its work to help ensure Beth El remains both warm and welcoming as well as safe and secure.

Keruv | Accessibility & Inclusion @ Beth El Sacred Opportunity for Community Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur come “early” this year, but none too soon! Whatever the weather, we welcome this opportunity to re-connect and embrace family and friends. The wider society may suffer an epidemic of loneliness and divisiveness, but the Jewish High Holidays serve to bring us together in joyous, if solemn, community. How uplifting it is to reflect and celebrate together.

Everyone needs such an opportunity and the Keruv Committee wants to make sure that no one is inadvertently left out. Again this year, we will have a quiet room set aside for anyone who may need to be away from the crowd and bustle. We have large print High Holiday prayer books (machzors) available as well as hearing amplification devices. We have three white stands that will be available in the main sanctuary on which to rest a machzor if you lack the strength to hold this heavy book. An area will be set aside in the main sanctuary for people in wheelchairs or walkers and their companions. In case of emergency, there is a handicapped accessible exit directly our of the sanctuary to the Sukkah Garden. For help locating any of the aforementioned, please ask an usher for assistance. If for any reason, you are not able to physically travel to Beth El, holiday services in the main sanctuary will once again be available on the livestream.

You can enhance our inclusion efforts during the High Holidays by being mindful of those around you. Please use the public bathrooms downstairs and not the single bathrooms that are handicap accessible and gender inclusive unless you need them, and direct your children to do the same. This will help ensure that the accessible bathrooms are available for those who need them. Please walk slowly and avoid rushing or running especially in crowds. In general, pay attention to those around you and offer assistance if someone needs navigating the building, finding a seat, locating the prayer books, or anything else. Please let us know if you have any special needs for the high holidays such as wheelchair seating so we can be sure to address your needs. Email info@bethelnr.org or call our main office. Beth El Day Camp Welcome Carly

Carly Tucker brings a lifelong passion for education and youth development to her new role as Director of Beth El Day Camp. A graduate of Boston University, Carly holds master’s degrees in Childhood Education and Special Education from Hunter College. Before joining Beth El, she spent two years as a Head 4’s Teacher at Westchester Reform Temple and many years as a Special Education Itinerant Teacher serving children and families throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan.

After an incredible first summer at Beth El Day Camp, Carly is even more excited for what’s ahead. She loved getting to know the campers and families, watching children’s confidence grow, creating fun traditions, and seeing the camp community come together each day. She is passionate about making every camper feel seen, supported, and excited to come to camp, and looks forward to creating many more unforgettable summers.

For the past eight summers, Carly has been an integral member of the Camp Romaca community in the Berkshires, progressing from counselor to a senior leadership role, In that capacity she has mentored and supervised staff, supported campers and families, coordinated daily camp operations, and helped ensure that each day ran smoothly. Her experience leading teams, solving challenges, and fostering a positive camp culture has prepared her to oversee all aspects of a camp program. Carly’s passion for creating meaningful experiences, combined with her proven leadership and organizational skills, makes her well-equipped to lead a camp where children

As we close another incredible camp season, we extend our deepest gratitude to Rebecca Guralnik for her three years of outstanding leadership. Her unwavering attention to detail, deep commitment to every child, and passion for creating a joyful, meaningful Jewish camp experience have left a lasting impact on our community. Beth El Nursery School As the doors of our Nursery School prepare to open for a new year, there is a palpable sense of excitement in the air. September in a Reggio Emilia inspired school is a season of possibilities. It is a time when children, teachers, and families begin a journey of discovery together. In the Reggio philosophy, we view children as capable, curious, and full of ideas. Rather than simply delivering information, we listen carefully to children’s questions and theories, allowing their interests to help shape the curriculum. The classroom becomes a place of exploration, creativity, collaboration, and joyful learning. The beginning of the school year is especially meaningful. New friendships begin to blossom, familiar routines offer comfort and security, and children gradually gain confidence as they settle into their classroom communities. Teachers thoughtfully prepare inviting environments filled with openended materials that encourage wonder, imagination, and hands-on investigation. At our Jewish Nursery School, the rhythms of the Jewish year are woven naturally into the life of the classroom. As autumn approaches, children will experience the warmth and traditions of Rosh Hashanah and Sukkot through music, storytelling, sensory experiences, cooking, art, and joyful celebration. These moments help children build a deep sense of belonging and connection to Jewish life.

Equally important is the partnership between school and family. In the Reggio approach, parents are valued as essential members of the learning community. Together, we create an environment where children feel known, supported, and inspired to grow.

As we anticipate the start of the school year, we are especially excited to renew our treasured relationship with our “Grand Friends.” These intergenerational experiences bring warmth, connection, and meaning to our school community. Through shared celebrations, conversations, music, stories, and collaborative activities, our children have the opportunity to form genuine bonds with older adults, learning the values of kindness, empathy, and respect across generations. We are also thrilled about the reopening of our Atelier (Art Studio) this year and the opportunity to welcome our new Atelierista, Eve Mack, to our school community. In the Reggio Emilia philosophy, the Atelier is far more than an art room — it is a studio for creativity, expression, investigation, and deep thinking. Sisterhood

When our kids were young, summer was defined by so many things: school was over, camp was approaching, days were longer (after dinner, playing running bases in our backyard was an evening activity – that is while the kids were home), everything was generally slowing down, if only for eight weeks. And then, boom, it all geared up again with lasting memories of vacations taken, time well spent – and – reminders of all we DID NOT do during those lazy, hazy days of summer.

What about Sisterhood? Actually, during the summer, there have been quite a few on going activities – canasta, mah jongg, We Care blankets, book groups – wonderful opportunities to get out and be with other people – without having to get into a bathing suit!!! Sisterhood is looking to expand its programming this coming year. We have many extremely talented people within our own community, so, if tapped on the shoulder, we hope the response will be positive.

I would like to publicly thank the entire Beth El Synagogue Center staff for their help and dedication in making everything we do at Beth El possible. None of this happens in a vacuum— there are many working parts involved in carrying out our programs and events, and Sisterhood is forever grateful for their support. Rosh Hashanah begins on Friday, September 11, 2026 – the 25th anniversary of a day etched in the memories of those who were alive that day and old enough to remember. As we begin a new Jewish year, I hope each of us will say a special prayer for all of those affected by that day. Best wishes for a safe, peaceful, healthy and prosperous 5787.
