This month’s Israeli Cultural Connections column, presented by IAC member Tamar Ben-Simon, features the holiday of Tu B’Shvat.
The Holiday of Tu B’Shvat – How it is Celebrated in the United States and Israel Tu B’Shvat, the Jewish New Year of the Trees (in Hebrew Rosh Hashanah L’Ilanot), is celebrated on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat. Tu B’Shvat is mentioned in the book of Leviticus 19:23-15 in reference to the commandment of tithing. We are told that after planting a tree in the land of Israel, it is forbidden to eat the fruit of the tree for the first three years. In the fourth year the fruit is for G-d, and in the fifth year you can eat the fruit. Tu B’Shvat is not mentioned in the Torah; the Mishnah is the only source that designates the New Year for the trees. Throughout time different customs have emerged as to how to celebrate this arbor holiday. Tu B’Shvat is celebrated similarly in Israel and the Diaspora in some respects—we eat fruits from the Seven Species of Israel (wheat, barley, grapes (from the vines), figs, pomegranates, olives and dates), and we strive to plant trees in the land of Israel. Customs differ concerning the planting of trees. In Israel, school children go on field trips to plant seedlings in forests, gardens or yards, while in the United States, we traditionally donate to Jewish National Fund, which, in turn, plants trees on our behalf in the land of Israel. Another difference is that while it is customary in the United States and Israel to eat a variety of fruits (not only dried fruit), these fresh fruits are ripe and readily available at supermarkets and canteen stands in Israel due to the mild winters. However, if you really want to enjoy the smells, colors, and wide selection of Israel’s tasty fruit, stroll through the famous Shuk Mahane Yehuda in Jerusalem, or Shuk Hakarmel in Tel Aviv. Walking around there you will see, smell, and taste abundant fresh fruit piled high, which is truly a feast for all your senses. Happy Tu B’Shvat! PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE is in the midst of a prolonged and steady decline in membership. As I mentioned at the semi-annual congregational meeting, this trend is consequential because, given that most of our expenses are fixed costs, balancing our budget becomes increasingly challenging over time. But attracting new members also matters because people are Mark Silver the lifeblood of our shul. Your Officers are committed to the shul’s financial stability, but we are equally committed to Beth El’s mission: Enriching people’s lives through Judaism and community. And this requires bringing newcomers into our ranks. Although the joys of newborns and new members bring much happiness, I write this message with a heavy heart after attending the January “No Hate—No Fear” Solidarity March in response to a wave of violent attacks against Jews. In a recent Shabbat morning sermon, Rabbi Schuck suggested a twofold response to recent events: rejection of anti-Semitism coupled with affirmation of the positive role Judaism can play in our lives. We had a meaningful Beth El turnout at the march. Now that we have returned to New Rochelle, we turn our attention once again to enriching lives through our Jewish community. As our mission states, we do so through prayer, learning, spirituality, culture, caring relationships, and connection with Israel. Getting more people—be they current members or newcomers—actively involved in Beth El’s many activities and programs seems just the thing to do. See you in shul! Mark
Guess what Beth El is investing in? Highchairs! For the first time in a long time, we just purchased additional highchairs to accommodate the growing number of tots at Shabbat Kiddush lunch. And with the recent flurry of baby namings and britot, we will have even more candidates for these chairs in the months ahead. Many of these young ones are third generation Beth El members, the children and grandchildren of Beth El members. A few years ago, a congregant suggested to me that members’ adult children represented a great opportunity for us. I thought it was a nice idea, but, to be frank, I was doubtful that it would generate significant numbers of new members. But indeed it has. Why do Beth El progeny return home to rear their children? Surely being near family is one factor. And nostalgia for one’s own childhood may be another. But I like to think that it is also because those who grew up at Beth El know that Beth El is a great place to rear children. Many of us know that. And many of us also have children, nieces and nephews, or friends’ children who live in Manhattan and will one day soon be looking for a home in the suburbs. So I want to encourage you to communicate to these potential members you know that Beth El is a great place for young families. Many of us also know that Beth El is a great place to retire or to downsize. Here, too, I encourage you to recommend us to your friends. And it wouldn’t hurt to mention us to your unaffiliated neighbors, as well. In short, my message is the following: At Beth El, everyone is on the Membership Committee! If you would like to become an official member of that committee, please let me know so that we can get you involved. Recruitment is an important function because, as you no doubt are aware, Beth El, like most large non-Orthodox synagogues locally and nationally,
January “No Hate - No Fear” Solidarity March Members of Beth El gathered at the “No Hate - No Fear” march on Sunday, January 5th in downtown Manhattan. We stood with approximately 25,000 others in a show our solidarity to those who have been victims of anti-Semitic assaults. The march began in Foley Square (also known as Thomas Paine Park) and we followed Rabbi Sitkin across the Brooklyn Bridge as we held posters, sang, and chanted our anger at the recent events in the metropolitan area. Once over the bridge, we entered Cadman Plaza where we connected with Rabbi Schuck and then listened to a variety of speakers including Governor Cuomo and Senator Schumer. Each speaker passionately railed against antisemitism and made it plain that the past incidents were unacceptable. One speaker cited Elie Wiesel who stated that, “The opposite of love is not hate. It’s indifference.” That resonated with the large crowd. While the circumstances that brought us together was unnerving and horrifying, it was comforting to see such a strong and unified response by so many who rejected indifference.

KERUV* KORNER A dozen years ago at its May 2008 annual colloquium, the Jewish Special Education International Consortium designated February Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month (JDAIM). Its purpose: A unified time for Jewish organizations and communities world-wide to raise awareness and foster inclusion of people with disabilities and those who love them. Today, in championing the rights of all Jews to be accepted and included in all aspects of Jewish life, JDAIM reflects a foundational Jewish value: We are all equally created in the image of God, and a contemporary urgency in the fight against antiSemitism, we must hold together, all of us, as one Jewish people. At Beth El, while we work to ensure that every month brings awareness and inclusion of disabled congregants and family members, we highlight the month of February for speakers who generously share their lives with us in order to foster increased awareness and inclusion within the walls of our synagogue. In connection with the twelfth annual JDAIM observance

in 2020, we are delighted to have as guest speaker one of our own, congregant Judy Schmeidler. Judy’s presentation, “You See - Let Me Tell You How I See,” will describe her journey from being sighted to being legally blind, and explain, with pictures and props, what it is she can and cannot see. A Question-and-Answer session will follow in which all audience members of any age can ask about Judy’s life and vision, as well as how to be more aware and inclusive of sight impaired individuals. Judy’s talk is on Sunday, March 15th, at 12:00 noon, and this is an invitation for those who already know this extraordinary woman, and for those who do not. It is open to the public and especially to children and teens who will have an opportunity to ask a blind person questions that they would not ordinarily feel comfortable to ask. Judy is on a mission to educate and will answer each one. Do not miss this opportunity to hear from an individual who refuses to let a disability define her. VISION ACTION TEAM The Den Coffee Machine: Under New Management
Members of Beth El’s Vision Action Team met for breakfast on Sunday morning, January 12th, to review its work over the past six months. Six “pillar” teams (see box in right-side column) have been developed from the congregation’s year-long Journey planning initiative to envision Beth El’s future.* The pillar teams have given birth to new ideas and have advanced prototypes (experiments) created during Journey – totaling over a dozen ideas to help enrich the lives of our members. Initiatives range from those you may have seen (for example the Den, Beth El Interest Groups, and monthly volunteer and committee appreciation Bulletin articles) to those that are less apparent (for example, spontaneous teachings about Jewish law, research into membership trends and projections, and guides to make planning events easier and measuring program success more meaningful). Interested in becoming more involved? If these ideas excite you, or you have an idea of your own to share, come aboard! • Support our shul. • Enrich our community. • Work together with good people. • And (see above) enjoy the occasional bagel breakfast. Meet Our Volunteer of the Month: Jenny Longman School and Hannah began kindergarten at Schechter Westchester (now the Leffell School). I offered to do a shofar demonstration at Beth El for Eden’s class early in the year, and others in the building took notice. Thus began my shofar blowing at Beth El’s High Holiday services. I also played the trumpet for Eden’s class, which soon turned into my playing at various Beth El events, including the occasional Melaveh Malkah, Singing (well, for me, playing) as a Spiritual Practice, Purim activities, and, my favorite, our annual musical Selichot service. Although my favorite Beth El volunteer activities involve music or shofar blowing, I have enjoyed being involved in other activities, such as the Kallah Planning Committee and the Board of Trustees. I’ve been flattered by the synagogue members who think I am a professional musician, but I am actually a tax lawyer. I focus on international tax and estate planning issues for high net-worth individuals and global families.
I am honored to be chosen as this month’s “Volunteer of the Month.” My family (husband, Randy, and daughters Hannah and Eden) joined Beth El in 2015 when we moved to New Rochelle from the Upper West Side. Ironically, although we attended shul on the UWS, Hannah attended a Jewish Nursery School, and Eden took a number of toddler classes at Manhattan’s JCC, we felt we Jenny Longman were missing a cohesive Jewish community. About Beth El’s Audit & Finance Committee
Beth El professionals, a final budget is presented to the Board of Trustees for their approval. This committee works particularly hard at the end of each fiscal year to develop our annual budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The Treasurer, Barbara Cohen, is the chair of the Audit & Finance Committee. Other volunteer members are our previous Treasurer Joe Wygoda, our Financial Secretary Ellen Barlis, as well as Aaron Fleishaker, Adam Kerchner, Elliot Lesser, Geralynn Reifer, Larry Mandelker, Marc Klee, Mark Silver, Michael Meisler, Sam Berger, Executive Director Erica Leventhal, and Controller Olivier Vogel.

Meet the Audit and Finance Committee, led by Barbara Cohen Beth El’s Audit and Finance Committee works very hard to ensure our financial sustainability. They oversee all of the finances of the congregation, including the collection of all dues and fees, and the examination and audit of all bills. They also oversee all insurance policies and recommend methods of raising funds and improving the finances of the congregation. The committee is responsible for working with our accountants on the annual review. After all of the individual budgets are created, in conjunction with the appropriate

“New Rochelle is a diverse community in a suburb of New York City located in Westchester County. [We have] a group of volunteers who prepare a meal in the synagogue dairy kitchen, which is sent to the local soup kitchen, also in New Rochelle. Our group is called Project HOPE as we supply the H.O.P.E. Soup Kitchen (“Help Other People Eat”) one day each month. The meal that we send the Soup Kitchen is kosher, and the cooking group has been in existence for more than twenty years. I have been with the group for the last nine years...Our meal is prepared for a group of over a hundred people. We are currently sponsored by the Beth El Sisterhood. We welcome all volunteers to participate.”

Sisterhood Scene February brings us blustery winds, snow, and frigid cold in the northeastern corner of the United States. Yet on the tenth of this month, Jews will celebrate the holiday of Tu B’Shvat, the New Year of the Trees. There are four New Year holidays in Judaism, and this one delineates the time from which the tree’s life is to be counted for collection of its fruits. As a child, I remember the small bags of fruits grown in Israel we received each year, including a strange brown pod called buchsar or carob. When we traded fruits with each other in religious school, one boy got all of this fruit since no one else would eat it. Also, we were taught that this holiday was the harbinger of Spring. “How

could that be?” I often wondered as the ground was frozen, trees were bare, and snow was still a possibility. Then, I spent a year in Israel and, lo and behold, the almond trees were blooming and the earth was warming up and fertile. Wow, what an eye-opener for me. As we long for Spring, remember that there is still much going on in and around Beth El and with Sisterhood to warm our hearts in this snowy month—book groups, cooking for the homeless, game night, and much more—can keep us warm until the actual signs of Spring rise here in New York. So, after three Shabbatot of operation (as of this writing), the Zero-Waste Kiddush received overwhelming approval from congregants. We’ve heard many positive comments so far, such as “this is so important,” “I’m so proud that Beth El is doing this,” and “we should have done this a long time ago.” Here are the guidelines for all of us to dispose of our lunch items at Zero-Waste Kiddush: • Collect your plates, cups, cutlery and napkins before leaving the ballroom. • Bring the materials to one of the groups of bins at locations in the ballroom. • For proper disposal, note the pictures on signs posted at the bins. • If you need help, ask a green-aproned Green Team volunteer stationed at the bins. We’re on our way. Let’s keep it up! Big thanks go to all the congregants who so quickly picked up on the new routine. In the first week of January, the Jewish community at large celebrated the Siyyum Hashas, the completion of the seven-and-ahalf-year cycle of learning the entire Babylonian Talmud. This takes place by learning one folio page (a Daf) each day—2711 pages in total. This is called Daf Yomi. There were celebrations of the completion, a Siyyum, around the world, as well as the beginning of the next Daf Yomi cycle. Meanwhile, that same week, we at Beth El accomplished our own significant task—and there are parallels. We started a ZeroWaste Kiddush program as our contribution to reducing carbon emissions and sustainability. So, what are the parallels? Both are an end, as well as a new beginning. In the case of our Kiddush, we are ending the use of plastic at Kiddush and beginning the use of compostables. Learning Daf Yomi takes a unique kind of consistency and commitment. Zero-Waste Kiddush also requires consistency, so that the compost collections don’t get “contaminated” by recyclables and trash—hence our three bins. The celebration is for learning 2711 Talmud pages, one day at a time. Well, 2711 happens to be the Gematria, or numerological value of the first verse of the Torah, i.e., the Beginning.

SAVE THE DATE! Youth & Family Shabbat is the weekend of February 7th-8th. Heads of Schools are invited to join us from Carmel Academy and The Leffell School, in addition to our wonderful Beth El clergy, educators, and staff, for a great weekend together. Stay tuned—literally!—for some melodies to learn during Shabbat Shira, the Shabbat in which we read the Song of the Sea (Ex. 15:1-18) in Parashat Beshalach. This was the song by the children of Israel after the Passage of the Red Sea. It is customary for spiritual singing to occur during services on this Shabbat, which falls on Youth & Family Shabbat this year. We are so excited to celebrate together.Register for Shabbat dinner on Friday, February 7th, by visiting bethelnr.org/ yfshabbat. This is a special opportunity to come together as a larger community and celebrate our youth and families. Join us! Religious School Dismissal Procedures
Dismissal occurs in the front parking lot these Thursdays between 5:40 pm and 6:10 pm. 2 4 6 9 11 13 16-22 25 27
Beginning in September and ending in June, we have a dismissal procedure in place for Thursday evenings after Religious School, happening between 5:40 pm and 6:10 pm every Thursday that Religious School is in session. Cars will enter the parking lot through the entrance closer to North Avenue (in the exit lane) on Northfield Road, looping through the parking lot and snaking up to the front entrance, picking up children at the red doors by the Office of Youth and Family Engagement. Families are given color-coded cards for each of their children with their name and class listed. Parents or caregivers will hand one card to a professional who will send someone to go get your child and your child will hand you back your card when they enter the car. For those who would like to park, please use the second entrance on Northfield Road, further from North Avenue. Bekkah Gold will be stationed outside so that the path to the second and third parking are accessible to anyone trying to enter or exit the building. If you plan on entering or exiting the property during this window, please park in the second and third parking lots. All February Religious School dates are listed for your convenience. We look forward to a smoother process and maintain that the safety of our children is our top priority. Thank you for your patience as we get used to this dismissal procedure!

We have re-evaluated the way we handle notification of general donations made to Beth El. We will only mail out acknowledgement letters for donations of $36 or greater made to our various funds. ALL donations of any value will continue to be posted in the monthly Bulletin.
