From The President Why do we need a Small Business Saturday? I am sure that when you were a small child (if you are over the age of 50 you will remember this!), your parents took you to a downtown department store to see the Christmas display the day after Thanksgiving. Santa usually made a magical appearance and elves pranced around the city streets. Most realize that the creation of the suburban mall shifted retail around from the local retailer, possibly located in a more urban setting. Working with Chambers of Commerce and other business organizations, American Express started Small Business Saturday in 2010, in hopes of building a day dedicated to shopping small businesses and offering a fun way to celebrate the holiday shopping season. It falls between the traditional Black Friday shopping frenzy that occurs the day after Thanksgiving, and before the 21st century-created Cyber Monday, when Internet shopping sees a boost in activity with online deals. For the past six years the Carlisle Area Chamber of Commerce has supported the initiative, allowing us the opportunity to promote our small business members and help drive sales by engaging our community. In fact, Small Business Saturday 2016 reported $15.4 billion in sales for independent businesses. By supporting local, independently-owned small businesses, we’re helping to create jobs, boost the economy, and preserve neighborhoods in and around Central Cumberland County. Promotion is key to making Small Business Saturday a success! The Chamber is committed to providing all our local small businesses with the tools they need to succeed. Chamber members can use the Hot Deals section of our website or app to advertise — free of charge — Small Business Saturday specials and discounts. Members can also use their listing in our Business Directory to help get the word out about what they can offer the consumer that sets them apart from their competitors. If you are interested in becoming a member to have access to these added benefits, please call our office at 717-243-4515. Carlisle Chamber Annual Meeting
The Carlisle Chamber Annual Meeting hosted over 200 attendees at Dickinson College on October 18. We celebrated the year’s highlights including the hiring of the new events director, Hollis Kosco, and the launch of the Carlisle Chamber Mobile App. We also took time to acknowledge our members with a video with photos of our member events, a red carpet photo opportunity with photos taken by Revelation Photography (photos 2-4), and our Member Achievement Awards. We awarded six Member Achievement Awards this year. Bob Marquette of Members 1st was posthumously awarded the Star of Excellence Award. George Nahodil accepted the award on his behalf (photo 5). Jen Burd received the Chamber Spirit Award for exemplifying and promoting the Carlisle Chamber in our community (photo 5). Bill Miller accepted the Business Executive of the Year Award on behalf of Carlisle Events (photo 6). Dan Mowery of Midway bowling was awarded the

Young Business Leader of the Year Award (photo 7). Gwen Killian of F&M Trust was awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award for her work with the Membership Committee (photo 8). Finally, James Washington, Jr. was posthumously awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for his work with Hope Station. New CEO of Hope Station, Safronia Perry, accepted the award on his behalf (photo 9). Margee Ensign, president of Dickinson College (photo 1), was our keynote speaker and explained her vision for Dickinson’s engagement with the Carlisle Community. She also shared her experiences as the president of the American University of Nigeria and how she found hope to be a powerful tool to improve the lives of young people and aid them in finding a path in life that is beneficial for the whole community. This point of view has shaped her vision for Dickinson. We extend a big thank you to our keynote sponsor, UPMC Pinnacle Carlisle for supporting the event.
