Dear Chamber Members, As I am si ng here wri ng my August newsle er ar cle, I received an email from Mowery Construc on that lumber prices have begun to fall. “A er months on the rise, lumber prices dropped from an average of $1,267 at the beginning of June to $689 at the end of July. Projec ons show that lumber prices will con nue to drop.” As every employer seems to be looking for employees, learning that some of the hurdles that we were facing with the supply of goods seems to be ge ng be er. We have been told that we have a few more months to go, so it won’t be easy, but we will get there together. Last month, I men oned that we would be sending a survey of your workforce needs. If you have not completed it yet, you have un l the end of the first full week of August to share your input. This is really important to the Chamber, but also our development partners, because we want to share your input with them also. If you need us to resend this link to you, then just email me. This fall, we will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11th, 2001. Like many of you, I am certain you remember much of what happened that day. One thing that I will always remember was how beau ful the weather was – in Carlisle, NYC, at the Pentagon and in Shanksville. Such a beau ful day sha ered by the loss of so many and so much more. With the support of Bimbo Bakeries, the Chamber has bene fortunate to purchase 25-foot flag pole that will be dedicated on the late a ernoon/early evening of September 9th, weather permi ng. We are working out the details, but we are going give our local first responders recogni on that evening, as well as raising the flag for the first me. Please watch for details – it will be a great night to remember the past, while knowing that we have a strong future ahead.

Every year the US Army War College brings in 400 families from all over the world to study at the Carlisle Barracks. It’s the Carlisle Area Chamber’s tradi on that we receive and assemble member marke ng items that will comprise of the Welcome Bag given to the incoming families.
The Chamber would like to thank Navy Federal Credit Union for sponsoring the Welcome Bags once again this year.
We are proud of this tradi on; and happy to say that we had 78 businesses par cipate with various marke ng items such as flyers, branded collateral, etc. Sixteen volunteers came together on July 7th and assembled 400 welcome bags with all manner of items in less than 3 hours!! Yes, less than 3 hours!

“How can we show our apprecia on to our frontline workers and heroes?” It’s amazing that one ques on can lead to such an important campaign. But that wasn’t the only ques on the Carlisle Area Chamber reflected upon. The other was “how can we get our members involved and help out our restaurants and retailers?” And poof, “It’s Our Treat” was born.

9 The number one priority for all area employers is workforce development. Our area companies and communi es are in desperate need of essen al workers with specific and necessary skills. In July, we asked our members to fill out a short survey to help us know your experiences and what your needs are. The survey will be open un l August 13th. If you haven’t filled it out, please contact Robyn Dingle (rdingle@carlislechamber.org) and she will be able to get the survey sent to you. The Chamber is commi ed to assis ng our members with workforce development, and hope that we can find public and private solu ons that will enable you to get the talented and skilled employees you are looking to hire. In the coming weeks, we will have more informa on as we analyze and ‘unpack’ the results of the workforce survey.

Level funding is worth considering for employers with 25 or more employees if the insured popula on is generally healthy. With level funding, the employer pays a fixed monthly cost to cover the amounts necessary for administra on of the plan, stop loss coverage and claims funding. A third-party administrator pays the claims. Generally speaking, if at the end of the year, claim costs come in lower than expected, the administrator refunds the difference. If at the end of the year, claims come in higher than expected, the employer will reimburse the administrator for the difference. Protec on for the employer comes in the form of stop-loss insurance. Specific stop-loss limits the employer’s financial exposure when health claims for a par cular covered individual exceed a specified dollar level, such as $25,000 or $50,000. Aggregate stop-loss insurance limits the employer’s financial liability when the total claims incurred by their group exceed a specified level, such as 120% or 125% of expected claims. Todd Baird Lindsey Devlin Foundation, July 1st, 2021. The non-profit foundation announced today that it has changed its name to include the last name of Michael Burke Devlin. This decision was unanimously decided by the committee’s board of trustees to honor the decades of work Devlin has donated to the foundation over the years. Devlin was born and raised in Belle Vernon, PA. Even as a student, Mike displayed special qualities and a propensity to serve others. He was nominated “Lion of the Month” in December of ‘67 by his senior classmates, who chose him based upon the qualities of character, leadership, scholarship, and service to his school and community. He has been an active community participant in the Carlisle area since he moved to the area decades ago. Devlin first joined the foundation in 1999 and continued to serve in three-year term increments. He served in various positions over the years including President, Vice President, and accountant. In 2020, he chose to take a sabbatical while undergoing cancer treatment. “The decision to honor Mike was an easy one,” said Executive Director Stacie Nickel. “Mike is an incredible guy who has given so much of himself for the benefit of the foundation and its mission. He has made the foundation what it is today, and we wanted to recognize this.” The mission of the Todd Baird Lindsey Devlin Foundation is to help elderly individuals remain in independent living situations for as long as practical. The Foundation offers direct financial support or other indirect forms of assistance in an effort to respond to each individual’s medical, nutritional, housing, social and psychological needs. Beneficiaries must be 55 years of age or older, meet specific income criteria and live within the organization’s service area including the Boroughs of Carlisle, Newville and Mt. Holly Springs and the surrounding townships including South and North Middleton, West Pennsboro, Dickinson, Lower and Upper Frankford and Penn.
