The Chamber Update From The President Thank you. Over the past three months, the Chamber has sent out surveys that represent your business needs and interests. Why are we doing the surveys on a monthly basis? 1. To have a better understanding of your business issues and needs. 2. We take your data and share it with you, so that you can know what your peers locally are going through / witnessing / experiencing. 3. We can provide your anonymous data to our presenters, so that they can tailor their presentations to your discussion items/needs. The January 2018 survey was all about how 2017 wrapped up and what you expected to see from 2018. The Chamber hosted our annual Economic Forecast breakfast with M&T Bank and we were able to share the results with Wilmington Trust’s Chief Economist, Luke Tilley. This way, he was able to tailor his presentation to our member interests.

What did the survey say? Well, we had a 27% response rate overall. The question in regard to describing your growth rate in 2017, on a scale from 1-3, 64% suggested that your growth was strong to flat for the year. For 2018, you were split down the middle, predicting flat growth.

The overall most critical issue facing your organization – the cost of healthcare and benefits. This was was followed closely by concerns of being able to meet labor needs. We could argue from the results that these two issues fight back and forth as the number one issue facing all businesses. Customer acquisition costs and transportation were also referenced in a minor way as economic concerns.

Overall, the comments were favorable for business growth and success in 2018, with the caution that “the employees that you hire makes the difference.” Another quote was that “staffing needs to be addressed” – so overall, our local companies are encouraged about the possibilities that this year brings, but not without concern for some key issues that need to be addressed.

M&Z Carpets hosted our February mixer and showed off some of their specialty services including how they clean huge rugs.

Taste of Carlisle saw huge success again this year. Six hundred attendees enjoyed sampling Carlisle’s best foods and beverages and learned about 60 of our local businesses. This event would not be possible without the support of our sponsors: Bimbo Bakeries, UPMC Pinnacle, Aero Energy, The Carlisle Expo Center, Belco Community Credit Union, PA Media Group, Susquehanna Style, The Sentinel, and Dyndes, Inc. 1. Joy of Carlisle Thai Cuisine showed attendees how to make Mango Salad in one of our three cooking demonstrations. Dyndes, Inc. created our staging, sound, and seating lounges for the day. 2. The Middlesex Diner featured a Pennsylvania Dutch themed menu with chicken pot pie, iced tea, and many dessert pies. 3. Create-A-Palooza created a fun “Kid’s Corner” with painting activities and penguin-themed games. 4. Carlisle High School’s Culinary Arts Program joined us again and wowed attendees with a leprechaun theme! 5. 1794 The Whiskey Rebellion was our winner of this year’s Best in Show Competition followed by Carlisle High School and Middlesex Diner. Through our Best in Show Competition and raffle prize giveaways, the community raised $1,500 this year for Project SHARE, The Salvation Army, and the United Way. 6. Bruster’s offered three different flavors of ice cream to guests! 7. Brett Thackara and James Crummel of ABC 27 joined us as EmCees again this year! Thank you to Sam’s Club for donating the cake for our VIP celebration.

The Carlisle Chamber Community Profile and Business Directory is an extremely valuable tool for our members and the community! As we work on developing the 2018-2019 business directory, we wanted to give you some inspiration on ways that your organization can best use our directory to serve your clients. At the Chamber, we use the membership directory on a daily basis to refer incoming callers to your businesses. Interested callers include businesses and community-members alike.
