CHEERS!

A Holiday Classic

14 •

BEST OF CENTRAL VERMONT • WINTER 2026

j ENJOY

A NOSTALGIC

DRINK WITH A STORIED PAST

E

ggnog’s story starts way back in medieval Britain, with a cozy drink called “posset.” Imagine monks gathering around, adding eggs and figs to their warm, milky ale or wine, turning it into a symbol of celebration and good fortune. By the 1600s, posset had made its way into fancy aristocratic halls, where

ingredients like eggs, milk, and spices were so special that serving the drink was a sign of wealth. Nutmeg, especially, was the ultimate touch of luxury!

eggs, and sugar, eggnog became a winter favorite. Even George Washington loved it—his version was famously loaded with rum, whiskey, brandy, and sherry!

EGGNOG COMES TO AMERICA

THE EGGNOG RIOT OF 1826

Eggnog truly found its home in America. Thanks to the colonies’ easy access to rum from the Caribbean, and plenty of milk,

Here’s a wild holiday tale: In 1826, West Point cadets snuck whiskey into their Christmas celebration, despite strict rules. www.BestofCentralVermont.com •

15

George Washington's famous eggnog Washington famously served this version of eggnog at his holiday gatherings. 1 quart cream 1 quart milk 12 tablespoons sugar 1 pint brandy 1/2 pint rye whiskey 1/2 pint rum 1/4 pint sherry Mix liquors first. Separate egg yolks and whites. Beat yolks with sugar until creamy. Slowly add milk and cream while mixing. Beat egg whites until stiff and fold gently into mixture. Refrigerate for several days for depth of flavor.

Vermont Maple Eggnog A regional favorite, featuring pure Vermont maple syrup. 4 large eggs 1/3 cup pure Vermont maple syrup (Dark Robust preferred) 2 cups whole milk 1 cup heavy cream 1 tsp vanilla extract Fresh grated nutmeg Whisk eggs and maple syrup until smooth. Warm milk slightly and slowly mix into eggs. Add cream and vanilla. Chill 4–6 hours. Serve with grated nutmeg.

16 •

BEST OF CENTRAL VERMONT • WINTER 2026

The party got out of hand, leading to chaos, damage, and even court-martials. It’s one of the quirkiest stories in American holiday history!

TRADITION MEETS INNOVATION Throughout the 1800s and 1900s, eggnog became a beloved American tradition. Dairy farms, department stores, and soda fountains all offered their own versions. Eventually, packaged eggnog made its way to grocery stores, and today, you’ll find everything from classic recipes to creative new twists—think vegan, maple-sweetened, or even nitro cold brew eggnog!

WHAT MAKES EGGNOG… EGGNOG? Classic eggnog is all about eggs, milk or cream, sugar, spices, and sometimes a splash of spirits. Its signature creamy texture comes from blending eggs and cream just right, making every sip rich and velvety. Vermont adds its own special touch, using farm-fresh eggs, local dairy, and pure maple syrup. Local producers and craft distilleries whip up unique versions that are perfect for holiday gatherings.

MODERN EGGNOG CULTURE Eggnog is still going strong! You’ll spot it in festive cocktails, seasonal coffees, social media posts, and cherished family recipes passed down through generations. It’s a tradition that keeps bringing joy to every holiday season.

The Art of Vermont Cheeses

Pair a few local wedges with crusty bread and sliced apples for a delectable holiday spread. Here are a few of our favorites:

Pawlet Cheese BARDWELL FARM, WEST PAWLET

Crafted with Jersey cow’s raw milk and aged a minimum of four months, its mildly sweet taste is similar to an Italian-style Toma: creamy & nutty on the palate with bright grassy notes.

Winnimere JASPER HILL CREAMERY, GREENSBORO BEND

Sixty days of aging in strips of spruce bark result in a soft, luscious cheese. The award-winning Winnimere is made from cows’ milk produced exclusively during the winter months. Spread this on slices of your favorite crusty bread, and enjoy flavors of sweet cream, bacon, custard, and spruce.

Trappist DOE’S LEAP FARM, EAST FAIRFIELD

A washed-rind, goats’ milk cheese, Trappist is a raw milk cheese with a full, nutty flavor that’s perfect with sliced apples.

Clothbound Cheddar SHELBURNE FARMS, SHELBURNE

Slices of this crumbly, dense cheddar have a gorgeous golden color and a lingering nutty flavor that pairs well with our favorite jam, Blake Hill Preserves rhubarb with honey & dandelion jam. Pairing a sweet flavor with your cheese creates a lovely agra-dolce moment that is the perfect finish to your cheese board. www.BestofCentralVermont.com •

No-Bake Lemon Cheesecake CRUST 2¼ cups graham crackers crumbled ½ cup melted butter FILLING 3 packages (24oz) full-fat cream cheese (room temperature) 1 ½ cups powdered icing sugar 1 lemon juiced Zest of 2 lemons 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ¾ cup heavy whipping cream Line a 9” springform pan with parchment. Mix graham cracker crumbs and butter and press into prepared pan, and about ½” up the sides. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese with an electric, or hand mixer on medium speed until smooth. GEM

in the heart of Stowe M

ain Street in downtown Stowe has been home to a hidden gem since 2006. At first glance, Ferro Estate & Custom Jewelers might seem like an unassuming storefront. But take another look, and you will discover a magnificent jewelry store in the heart of the picturesque village of Stowe, with a rich history that spans generations and offers products and services you might never have imagined existed in Vermont. Take a peek into their workshop, and you’ll discover a team of highly skilled professionals, from GIA-trained gemologists to master bench jewelers. Let’s explore the remarkable story of Ferro Estate & Custom Jewelers, a business where impeccable craftsmanship, unique estate pieces, and a commitment to community come together to create Vermont’s most comprehensive jewelry store.

A LEGACY OF ARTISTRY Bryan Ferro, the owner of Ferro Estate & Custom Jewelers, has not only upheld his family’s legacy, but has elevated it to new

heights. Like his father, Nicholas Jr., he grew up in the jewelry business, learning the trade by working in the family jewelry store in Woodstock. It all began in 1946, when Nicholas Ferro Sr., a self-trained jeweler from Italy, opened Essex Jewelers in Newark, New Jersey. By the 1960s, the jewelry

manufacturing company had grown to become one of the leading ring designers and manufacturers in the country, serving over 1,500 retail jewelry stores and employing over sixty master jewelers. After Nicholas Sr. passed away in the late 1960s, his son, Nick Jr., took over the business, eventually opening a

high-end retail store in Bernardsville, New Jersey. In search of greener pastures, he and his wife, along with their two young sons, moved to Woodstock. In 1981, he opened N.T. Ferro Jewelers, which continues to operate today. “That is how I learned the art of jewelry making: My grandfather trained my father, and my father trained me,” Bryan said. In 2006, Bryan opened Ferro Estate & Custom Jewelers with his wife, Stephanie, who spent two decades working for Sotheby’s auction house in New York City and who, according to Bryan, understands the luxury market. Today, it is a full-service jewelry store specializing in fine diamonds, antique and estate jewelry, custom designs, and jewelry repair and restoration. “We are distinct from other jewelry stores,” Bryan said. “We sell unique pieces, not “trendy” brands you can find in stores around the country. There are many artisan stores in Vermont, but we are antique and estate specialists with a deep understanding of period pieces from the Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco, and midTwentieth-century eras.” The store is located in downtown Stowe in the historic Stafford building, which was owned by the Stafford family since 1867. Almost a hundred years later, they added a pharmacy, which operated until 2000. “We started as renters,” Bryan explained, “but purchased the entire building in 2012 and, shortly after, completely renovated it. Our hope was to help attract more businesses to the village and complement the retail stores that line the road to the ski slopes.”

A FEAST OF JEWELRY CHOICES Ferro Estate & Custom Jewelers is a veritable treasure trove of exceptional pieces, ranging from vintage estate jewelry to modern handmade items. From

32 •

BEST OF CENTRAL VERMONT • WINTER 2026

engagement rings to wedding bands and every gemstone imaginable, its extensive inventory is a diverse and carefully curated selection of products that have been hand-picked for their uniqueness. Meanwhile, the master jewelers on the premises have all the equipment necessary to craft custom pieces. What sets Ferro Jewelers apart is its commitment to a carefully curated collection of vintage jewelry. In fact, approximately 80 percent of its offerings consist of estate jewelry from different time periods. In addition to selectively buying collections from the local community and at auction, Bryan and Stephanie actively engage with estate dealers, making them a global force in estate jewelry. The owners seek special pieces with historical and emotional significance. According to Bryan, “Our estate jewelry collection features pieces from every era, appealing to almost every person who walks through the door.”

A SELECTION FOR EVERY TASTE In addition to estate jewelry, the store sells “engagement rings, wedding bands, broaches, necklaces, and every gemstone you can think of,” Bryan says. “Handpicked pieces are sourced from all over the country and world.” In addition to signed pieces from wellknown “classic” brands such as Cartier and Tiffany, the company is known for its Vermont-inspired jewelry. One of its standout offerings is its collection of over sixty unique “snowflakes,” named after towns around Vermont, crafted from various precious metals and gemstones, including diamonds. If you’re looking for a truly special piece of jewelry, Ferro Jewelers is the place to go. “We do custom, too,” Bryan says. “A lot of clients come to us for engagement rings. If they don’t see something they like, we help them create it from a sketch or CAD image, and we build it together.” The company also repurposes inherited

jewelry. For example, as Bryan says, “A customer might have a family heirloom that they don’t wear, so we help them to reimagine and redesign it into something that keeps the family sentiment but is more in line with their style.”

34 •

BEST OF CENTRAL VERMONT • WINTER 2026

As a member of the American Gem Society, the store offers a range of on-site, full-service options—from appraisals and valuations to intricate watch and jewelry repairs and restoration—setting them apart from the competition. All the equipment needed and the talent necessary are located right on the premises. Expert gemologists conduct appraisals on-site. “We do estate assessments, or

can help a family divide an inheritance so it’s evenly distributed,” Bryan says. “We also give back to the community,” Bryan shares. “We are involved in many sponsorship opportunities in Stowe and the surrounding area. We’re also members of the Stowe Vibrancy Committee, a group of businesses with a goal of continuing to revitalize Main Street.” Every year, Ferro Jewelers sponsors the Stowe Vibrancy Annual Tree Lighting, and contributes to other charitable events.

“Our desire is to be part of the community and give back to the town.”

WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS When considering their future plans, Bryan says, “We are not a typical jewelry store that only wants to expand. Rather, we plan to grow our expertise so we can continue doing high-end work and providing really great products to our customers.” In a world where jewelry stores all seem to offer the same merchandise, Ferro Estate & Custom Jewelers is in a class of its own. Its dedication to preserving history, crafting custom pieces, and contributing to the community has solidified its position as the gem of Stowe, the go-to destination for anyone who wants to purchase, sell, or restore their jewelry.

GROWTH-CENTERED DEVELOPMENT The future is focused, exciting, and centered on growth and development.“I am expanding PMU Academy at Fringe, creating a professional, structured, and supportive space for aspiring beauty professionals to begin—or elevate—their careers.”

While she is new to training PMU artists, Tanja is far from a new educator. She has taught numerous professionals to perform lash extensions, lash lifts, and brow services over the years, earning praise for her clarity and confidencebuilding approach. Recently, Tanja has completed her advanced permanent makeup (PMU) trainer certification, preparing her to offer comprehensive PMU education with integrity, safety, and artistic skill. “Teaching has always been one of my passions,” Tanja says. “Helping lash artists grow their skills felt natural, and expanding into PMU

education became the next step once I completed the trainer certification.”

FROM ARTIST TO EDUCATOR Tanja’s path into beauty began in Germany, where she admired the art, precision, and creativity behind the industry. “When I came to the United States, I knew I wanted a career that would allow me to express myself artistically while supporting my family with flexibility.” Her journey started behind the chair, but her passion for detail-oriented artistry led her into lash extensions, brow design, and PMU. She quickly fell in love with services that create subtle, confidence-boosting transformations. Over time, she discovered her gift for teaching. Her supportive teaching style, step-by-step instruction, and the ability to build confidence helped numerous lash artists succeed. Many have since built thriving businesses—something that brings her immense pride. This success inspired her to expand into PMU education. After completing an extensive PMU trainer certification, she founded PMU Academy at Fringe—the education branch under Fringe Salon dedicated to offering high-quality lash, brow, and PMU training. “This industry has given me so much freedom,” she reflects. “Financially, creatively, and personally. Now I want other women to experience that same freedom.” With European roots, American drive, and a passion for artistry, Tanja is shaping the future of beauty education in Vermont— one confident professional at a time.

WINTER ESSENTIALS

FUN FACTS

a Winter Wisdom

WARM BOWLS, THE PERFECT FOIL FOR COLD DAYS As winter deepens, January brings National Soup Month— a time to enjoy comforting bowls, revive family recipes, and let something delicious simmer while the cold settles in.

WHY DO SOUP? • After December’s indulgence, soup offers a healthy reset, starring simple ingredients like root vegetables, beans, and grains. Winter produce, squash, onions, and herbs, shine in every pot. 48 •

BEST OF CENTRAL VERMONT • WINTER 2026

• Soup is a global comfort, with each bowl telling a story: French onion, Vietnamese pho, Italian ribollita, New England chowder, and Mexican pozole. Its universal appeal brings warmth to every culture. • Soup is also budget-friendly, stretches groceries, and makes meal prep easy. Nothing soothes a chilly day like a simmering pot—it’s nourishing, hydrating, and endlessly customizable for any January wellness goal.

SQUEEZE MORE JOY INTO WINTER Winter citrus brings color, aroma, and energy to the season. Oranges, grapefruits, and lemons brighten dishes and drinks, while dried citrus and candles refresh your home. Citrus selfcare lifts your mood, and these fruits add freshness and vitality to even the coldest months—whether for décor, gifts, or daily enjoyment.

5 TIPS FOR USING WINTER CITRUS 1. Zest first, squeeze second: Always grate the peel before cutting citrus to get the most flavorful oils for cooking or baking. 2. Use citrus to revive stale indoor air: Simmer peels with herbs like rosemary to naturally freshen closed-up winter rooms. 3. Brighten your mood: Add a few drops of citrus essential oil to a diffuser—not directly to skin—to boost your outlook during dark days. 4. Dehydrate citrus slices in batches: Oven-dry orange or lemon rounds at low heat for décor, cocktail garnishes, or gift tags. 5. Freeze citrus juice in trays: Keep cubes on hand to quickly perk up tea, sparkling water, or sauces long after peak season.

SOULFUL TIPS FOR FEBRUARY CLEAR THE CLUTTER Dedicate one hour to letting go of items, habits, or thoughts that weigh you down. Lightening your space mirrors lightening your mind.

INTENTIONAL PAUSES Take mindful walks or quiet moments without distractions—listen to your own rhythm and thoughts.

FEBRUARY’S FRESH START Short, crisp, and often overlooked, February is more than the bridge between winter and spring—it’s a natural pause. Traditionally seen as a time for clearing out the old and making space for new growth, this month offers a chance to slow down and focus on what matters. Use February to reflect, recharge, and prepare for the season ahead.

ACTS OF CONNECTION Reach out to someone you’ve lost touch with, write a note of gratitude, or share warmth—small gestures echo big.

CELEBRATE SMALL JOYS Treat yourself to seasonal comforts—tea, books, candlelit nights—reminding yourself that even the shortest month can be rich with feeling.

WINTER SKIN SECRETS A COZY-SEASON GUIDE TO KEEPING YOUR GLOW Winter has a way of revealing just how much our skin craves comfort. As temperatures drop and indoor heat rises, moisture escapes faster, complexions turn dull, and even the softest lips and hands start to rebel. But winter doesn’t have to be a battle—think of it as a chance to lean into nourishing rituals, and small, soothing moments of self-care. With the right touch, winter becomes less about dryness and more about glow management: thoughtful products, gentler routines, and the kind of hydration that feels like wrapping your skin in its own blanket.

SKIN-SAVING ADVICE Try these winter skin-saving habits—simple, effective, and worthy of their own winter ritual.

• LAYER HYDRATION Winter is the season for layering. Apply a hydrating serum (like hyaluronic acid) under your moisturizer to pull in moisture and give dry skin a plump, healthy finish.

• UPGRADE YOUR MOISTURIZER Swap lightweight lotions for richer, cream-based formulas. Look for ceramides, shea butter, and squalane—ingredients that lock in moisture and strengthen your skin barrier.

• WARM (NOT HOT) SHOWERS Steamy showers feel dreamy but strip natural oils. Keep water warm and follow up with body oil or lotion while skin is still damp for maximum absorption.

• SPF STILL MATTERS Even in winter, UV rays and snow glare can stress the skin. A daily SPF 30 keeps dryness, discoloration, and premature aging at bay.

• GENTLE EXFOLIATION Use a mild exfoliant once or twice weekly to remove flaky buildup. This helps serums and moisturizers sink in more effectively without irritating winter-sensitized skin.

• TRY A WEEKLY MASK MOMENT Choose hydrating gel masks, creamy oat blends, or barrier-repair masks. Turn it into a ritual.

inter is a time of celebrations and anticipation of what’s ahead. However, amid all the excitement, we often forget to protect one of our most valuable assets—our skin! Your health is your wealth, and just as we prioritize exercise, nutrition, and mental health, skin care should also be a priority to combat premature aging, skin infections, and even skin cancer. A well-rounded approach to health and wellness should

include your skin for an overall balanced and healthy lifestyle. That’s why we created this map to take the complication out of choosing what is best for your skin, with scientific and evidencebased facts from board-certified physician and local expert in aesthetics medicine Dr. Colleen Parker. As we implement healthy changes during the spring and beyond, let’s not forget that our skin deserves care and attention, too!

Your Rx to healthier skin!

A great part of medical aesthetics and skin care is to provide you access to specialty products such as prescription medications specific to your skin, aesthetic goals, and skin type. Just as we treat the health of our body with medicine, we can target and treat skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, melasma, wrinkles, or psoriasis with specialty prescription-strength products. We can treat the skin from the inside out as well as the outside in for optimal skin health and transformative results. Your provider can help you determine the products that would be best for you and your skin type because healthy and happy skin is beautiful skin!

Growth factors are natural proteins that stimulate the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid in the skin. As we age, our body is unable to make these as quickly as before, which is why growth factors are great for preventing signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles, and loose or sagging skin.

Physical SPFs (specifically ones with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as the active ingredients) provide a protective shield against harmful UVA, UVB, and UVC rays. Skin cells damaged by the sun will prematurely age your skin and put you at risk of skin cancer, further skin damage and overall degradation of your health. Simply put… just wear it!

R

Retinol, retinoid, and tretinoin are all compounds related to vitamin A. Using retinoids will increase skin cell turnover to renew the skin and reverse signs of photo-aging (sun damage). Vitamin A is important for skin cell function and can help protect from harmful UV rays and skin cancer!

water softener can help prolong the life of your water-using appliances. Targeting hard water minerals such as calcium and magnesium eliminates scale buildup, which has a number of benefits. People who live in homes with water softening systems may notice softer hair and skin, softer laundry, clearer water, and spot-free dishes.

Doggone Sweet Maple Spots In Vermont, when daytime temps are above freezing and nights below freezing, that can only mean one thing: It’s time to collect that beautiful tree sap that turns into Vermont’s famous maple syrup.

MORSE FARM MAPLE SUGARWORKS, located just 2.7 miles outside of Montpelier, is one place you can visit to learn all about the sugaring process—and it’s a great place to take your dog. Open to the public from 10am to 5pm, Morse Farm is a throwback to a simpler, quieter time, when generations of the same family worked together to carve out a living on the land. You and your pup can visit the sugarhouse, walk the “maple trail,” which winds through the sugar bush, and then stop for a visit with Rex and James, the Morse Farm goats. Pieces of folk art and antique farm implements dot the property, making it a fun adventure for everyone. To cap off your day, check out the dog-friendly Morse Farm store, brimming with maple products, as well as an assortment of Vermont specialty foods and gifts. And, of course, you’ll have to try the farm’s renowned maple creemee (a

PALMER’S SUGARHOUSE in Shelburne is another great sugaring season option. While only service dogs are allowed to enter the actual sugarhouse, visitors and their pups can hit the Nordic trail system with views of the Adirondacks, listen to live music, or visit the farm’s barn. For over 50 years, Palmer’s Sugarhouse, a family-run business, has opened its doors to the public for an event called Sugar on Snow. Every Saturday and Sunday, March 3–April 14, from 9am to 4pm, Palmer’s has special Sugar on Snow tastings, as well as sugaring demonstrations, free maple samples, maple products for sale, live music, and horseback rides (weather permitting) offering views of the Adirondacks. Palmer’s Sugarhouse is a friendly, comfortable family experience with plenty of parking and is handicap accessible. Move That Mutt! Winter weather is here, but you still need to get outdoors, and so does your pet. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, more than half of all dogs are overweight. And a dog that weighs too much is at a greater risk for osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, orthopedic problems, ligament injuries, skin disease, heart and respiratory disease, cancer, and a lower life expectancy. Get your dog moving with plenty of walking and playing. You’ll reap the benefits of regular walks as well, including increased heart health, decreased muscle pain and stiffness, stronger bones, and a boost in your energy and mood.

Spoil Your Furry Friends in Style

Paws for Play and Boost Your Joy Besides being our loyal companions, animals bring us fun. Have you ever watched a cat chase a laser or a dog chase its tail? Fun lowers stress levels, decreases blood pressure, and increases the “happy chemical” serotonin. Studies show that just petting a dog, cat, bunny, or horse lowers blood pressure. The mere presence of a beloved pet produces physical and mental changes: suppressed stress hormones, lower cortisol levels, and increased feelings of peace and happiness. Exercising with your pets offers even more benefits. Dog parents are more likely to work in daily exercise, reach their fitness goals, or lose weight. This helps prevent chronic disease, leading to a sense of confidence and overall well-being. While dogs keep you active, cats have more of a calming effect; both are associated with lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Keep Pets Cozy This Winter Many people may assume their pet’s fur coat is perfect protection from the winter weather, but given a severe drop in temperature and windy conditions, your pet may be in danger of hypothermia, potentially leading to frostbite to your pet’s ears, paws, and tail. Consider a sweater for your furr baby, especially if they are small or have short hair.

GIVE THE PERFECT GIFT We all consider our pets a part of the family, so it makes sense that we’d want to buy them gifts, not only during the holidays, but all year long. LEARN WHAT’S TRENDING TREND 1: “Smart” devices: Caring for your pets is easier than ever with hightech devices like smart collars, GPS trackers, automated feeding systems, and veterinary telemedicine. Plus, there are now wearable health devices like FitBark 2 activity trackers and DoggLeggs cardiac monitoring vests, and personalized nutrition apps like Pet Diet Maker and Feedog. TREND 2: Eco-friendly products: Pet owners are increasingly looking for biodegradable toys, organic food, and eco-conscious grooming supplies. Standouts include hemp dog and cat collars, toys made from recycled plastic, felt, and wool, and natural rubber. TREND 3: Innovative nutrition: Pet food makers are now combining the nutritional benefits of raw diets with the convenience of dry pet food. Some brands to try: Tender and True, Honest Kitchen, and Stella & Chewy’s.
