Welcome to BALLARAT
The name “Ballaarat” is derived from the Wathaurung Aboriginal name for the area, balla arat, meaning “resting place”. Built on fortunes made from the 1850s gold rush, Ballarat is known for its rich history, culture and beautifully preserved Victorian era architecture. You’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in Europe.
Ballarat is still yielding treasure today, in the form of quirky shops, hidden bars and worldclass cafés and restaurants... not to mention our lively music, art and performance scene. Best of Ballarat has been created to help visitors and locals make the most of what Ballarat has to offer... so start exploring!!
Eat & Drink
Ballaratians are spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out. You’ll find a strong and vibrant cafe culture just like in the big smoke. Farm-gate to plate doesn’t come any fresher than direct from the heartland of regional Victoria. Gourmet menus matched with boutique local wines can be savoured in intimate restaurants, or sample hand-crafted beer and hearty pub fare in rejuvenated historic venues. Ballarat is a foodie’s delight.

ROMANCING THE SKULL
Romancing the Skull looks at the depiction of the skull in art and examines why we continue to be so enamoured with this iconic symbol. Prints by Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada have become synonymous with the Day of the Dead - over 20 of his iconic prints are introduced to Australian audiences for the first time. Other highlights include a Nuremberg Chronicle from 1493 depicting one of the earliest Danse Macabre (Dance of Death) images, Australian artist Shaun Gladwell’s Virtual Reality work Orbital Vanitas 2016, works by contemporary Australian artists Sam Jinks, Rona Green & Ben Quilty and specially commissioned works by Fiona Hall, Reko Rennie & Sally Smart.

LAUREN BLACK: MEMENTO MORI: ART, MEDICINE AND THE BODY
An examination of the body, juxtaposing detailed anatomical drawings of human diseases with artworks inspired by traditional Chinese medicine. The exhibition sensitively brings together two very different ways of observing the body and approaching human health, allowing for reflection on the fragility of life and the inevitability of death.
LAUREN BLACK: A COMPLEX BEAUTY
Lauren Black builds on the themes of the related exhibition Memento Mori. She continues her work with diseased human remains, but shifts our engagement as she explores the territory of anatomical theatre, dissection, the complexities of disease and the unknown body.

Putting the FUN into Funerals
A Kat Pengelly Fashion Concept Show
WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!
Let’s talk about it, cry about it, laugh about it, make art about it… but most of all… dress up for it! Death – Our collective yet predominantly ignored destiny will be faced and embraced using a multi-media theatrical fashion parade. It is a storytelling platform for writers, film and theatre makers, fashion designers, artists, musicians, psychologists and scientists. Bringing death to life by creating a cultural shift in the way we grieve that makes our inevitable end accessible and acceptable. With an inclination for collaboration, Kat Pengelly has assembled a crew of master creators to present her current collection, Fashion for Funerals – Putting the FUN into Funerals. Inspirations include Blood Cells, Black Diamonds and the Danse Macabre. The show was born of her mother’s death and 10% of show profits are being donated to the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute.
