HELLO 2026 Welcome to 2026, we wish you a very happy year. Here at the magazine, 2025 turned out to be one of our best years ever: the year we moved beyond the print vs social media debate to a realisation that our local connectedness is stronger than ever – and that this is best served by a mix of print media and social media.

But what makes us truly stand apart has always been our genuine localness. Our magazines are produced by a team who all live, work and raise families on the patch; our roots, schools, parents and community connections shape every issue. We also have a dozen freelance writers who are all local too. Most of our team have been with us from the start, nearly 25 years ago!

These were the highlights of our year:

We love what we do, basically putting our daily local lives into print and social media with as much passion and purpose as we can muster. Inevitably, our competitors are rattled by our ongoing success, but we’ll take that as a compliment. The ultimate proof, though, comes from our advertisers and readers, who have applauded us every step of the way:

• We relaunched our magazine making it still glossier and more stylish – and it has received tremendous acclaim. • We added new distribution channels to give more people the chance to enjoy our magazine, with half a dozen pick up points added. ‘These go like hot cakes every month’, as one garden centre owner told us. • We continued to print at least twice the number of Rutland & Stamford copies as our nearest competitor, with the majority still being delivered door to door by our own team of dedicated distributors. • We launched a dedicated App and Readly link-up, further growing readership. • We have extended our leading position in social media with more followers and deeper engagement.

FOOD FESTIVAL Rutland Food & Drink Festival These festivals celebrate gourmet Rutland, with stalls inside Oakham Castle, in the castle grounds, on the Market Place and along the High Street. The first one of the year is on 22 March, 11am–4pm. GARDENING HIGHLIGHT Sweet Pea Season at Easton Walled Gardens A highlight of the year at Easton Walled Gardens, Sweet Pea Season launches in late June. Expect row upon row of gorgeously scented flowers, in bloom into July. Usually over 40 varieties are on display, from heritage to modern blooms, all cultivated at the Gardens.

on 2026 ARTS FESTIVAL Oundle Fringe Festival oundlefringe.org For over a week, usually around late June into early July, the Oundle Fringe Festival sees the market town’s pubs, hotels, cafés and streets (and some neighbouring villages) thronged with entertainers of many genres – everything from tribute bands and poetry readings to jazz, the blues, rock and even Scottish pipes. There’s also classical music, comedy performances and maybe the odd Shakespearean ode or two drifting about amongst the many free events in the programme.

LIVE MUSIC Arts for the Heart of England Festival Weekend artsfortheheartofengland.co.uk Led by David Hill, Arts for the Heart of England hosts a Festival Weekend with concerts across several days and featuring his IKON choir of professional singers. FARMING TRADITION The Fatstock Show in Uppingham Champion pigs, sheep and cattle are primped and preened for this traditional event held towards the end of the month in Uppingham’s Market Place – the only event of its kind in the UK still held in temporary penning in a town centre.

FESTIVE EVENT The Rutland NSPCC Christmas Concert at All Saints, Oakham In its 20th year in 2026, this fund-raising concert with readings from celebrities, festive carols and, typically, a brass band, marks the beginning of the festive season for many locals.

FESTIVE EVENTS Burghley House & Park at Christmas burghley.co.uk There’s typically so much going on at Burghley at Christmas – and you do need to book well in advance for some events. On the sports front, the Santa Fun Run is organised by Stamford Striders and raises funds for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, MindSpace Stamford and the Rotary Club of Stamford Burghley. It’s quite a spectacle to see so many Santas zipping around the park. And inside the House, annual events typically include the everpopular Carols in the Great Hall – glorious. Also in Dec: Oakham’s fabulous late-night shopping event, which is always on a Monday in the run up to Christmas; the pantomime at SAC from Sat 19 to Thur 24 Dec – in 2026 it’s ‘Rapunzel’.

Hindmarch Inspired by Arcadia Garden in Sheffield, local artist Jane Hindmarch’s latest collection, which you can see at Stamford Arts Centre later this month, explores the garden as a metaphor for life’s changing seasons – a space of beauty, growth, stillness and renewal.

ROM Tuesday 27 January to Saturday 7 February, Stamford Arts Centre will showcase the work of Stamford-based artist Jane Hindmarch with a solo exhibition entitled In Arcadia Ego – I am in Paradise. Inspired by repeated visits to Arcadia Garden in Sheffield – a living experiment in plant communities and natural balance – Jane’s drawings, paintings and sculptures capture the garden’s woodland edges, meadows and herbaceous borders as they shift through the seasons. Works such as Emerald Woodland Edge, June 1st, Golden Days, October and Arcadia Garden merge layered pigments, pooled liquid paint and glazes to convey atmosphere, structure, contrast and balance. Jane invites viewers to reflect on time, transformation and the quiet joy of simply being present outdoors. Adam Frost, Garden Designer and Presenter, notes: ‘Jane Hindmarch’s artwork creates a joyful atmosphere, highlighting the connection between art and nature. It’s beautiful in its simplicity, capturing the essence of the natural world with vibrant energy.’

vibrant live tribute to one of music’s most iconic labels. One of the UK’s most expressive trumpeters, he has performed with artists including Alicia Keys, Tony Christie, Ben E. King, Brand New Heavies and the BBC Big Band. A mainstay of the British and European jazz scenes, Corbett is known for his lyrical style, emotional depth and technical flair. He has appeared at major festivals such as Montreux, North Sea and Cheltenham, and regularly features on BBC Radio and Jazz FM.

An exciting new musical opportunity for young players

OLLOWING THE SUCCESS of its debut concert, infused with swashbuckling energy inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean, the Stamford Youth Orchestra is delighted to invite new young musicians to join it for its next musical adventure. Open to all orchestral instruments and to players from Grades 3–8, the orchestra offers budding musicians a friendly, encouraging environment where they can grow in confidence, develop ensemble skills and experience the thrill of making music together. The next programme continues its popular ‘Music from the Movies’ theme, promising plenty of excitement and heroic melodies to fire young imaginations.

Together they bring a wealth of teaching and performing experience, ensuring that rehearsals are both purposeful and fun. On the debut concert, one parent noted: ‘My daughter absolutely loved the experience. She said it was great fun, and it was wonderful to watch her confidence in ensemble playing grow.’ And Anja told us: ‘This new venture aims to create fresh musical opportunities for youngsters in Stamford, giving them the chance to explore orchestral playing outside of school, meet likeminded friends and work towards vibrant performances for the local community. ‘Whether your child has been playing for a few years or is already more advanced, the Stamford Youth Orchestra provides a welcoming space in which to stretch their skills and experience the joy of playing as part of a real ensemble. We employ and train all our own staff – most of whom have been with us many years. We never use sub-contractors for manufacture or fitting. EPTUNE BY KENDRICK INTERIORS bring the nationally acclaimed Neptune brand of kitchens and selected homewares to the region, with locals Joanna and Richard Kendrick offering specialist expertise in kitchen design, cabinetry and interiors. Joanna (designer) and Richard (craftsman) have found a gem of a building at 42 High Street, in the oldest part of Market Harborough. It’s a glorious Georgian building, with high ceilings, cornices and even a balcony. As Joanna tells me: ‘It will be a fantastic expression of the brand.’ The ground floor will focus on interiors inspiration in the ABOVE: watercolour of the new premises at main room in the front, whilst in the back and side rooms there 42 High Street, Market Harborough. will be kitchen displays. Upstairs will be the design studio and more kitchen installations, and a living room set. ‘Ultimately,’ Joanna explains, ‘we want the store to feel like a home and we feel sure, once we are settled in, that it will be a place that people come for inspiration. ‘As with all Neptune stores, the space is designed to feel like a home. Customers will have the opportunity to recreate the look completely, from the paint on the walls, to the ceiling and floors, even the radiators and switches. It’s all available, making it the place to go for a beautiful solid wood kitchen, or for interior pieces, or just for some home inspiration.’ There’s a local focus too: all the trades for the refurbishment of the new premises have come from a 20-mile radius. Joanna and Richard plan on the space being a place for community and events, and for supporting local makers. They are keen to be part of the town’s art trail, and already regularly show pictures by local artists, including Birgit Lewis. How would you describe your interior design style? ‘First and foremost, practical, but also different and special,’ Joanna notes. ‘I always want to make sure that the fundamentals are right, and then add something different and special eg some glass or unusual fabric. When I start thinking about a client’s brief, I begin by pitching myself into the space, understanding the lifestyle and needs of the family, and making design choices appropriate to the age and character of the house. And because Richard is himself a wood craftsman, we understand exactly how the product is built and what is then possible in terms of change, adaptation and new possibilities.

Collyweston Stone Slate Mine Ten years ago, a long-forgotten mine was given a new lease of life after over 50 years of abandonment. It was a bold leap of faith – one that saw owners, Nigel and Viv Smith, undertake the huge venture of reopening the historic Collyweston Stone Slate Mine. A decade on, this venture has won international acclaim, revived a dying craft and created the couple’s very own bat cave! Kate Fraser went underground to discover this natural treasure

EOPENING A MINE that had been sealed and silent for over 50 years was never going to be simple. But doing it without knowing exactly what lay beneath, that was a monumental challenge. For three years, Nigel and Viv worked hand-in-hand with mining consultants, local planners and conservation organisations to explore the possibility of returning an existing mine in the quiet village of Collyweston to working order. In February 2016, their determination paid off. After excavating hundreds of tonnes of infill to reach the original entrance and locate the old workings, the Collyweston Stone Slate Mine opened its gates once again, revealing fresh seams of the remarkable limestone slate that adorns many of Britain’s most important buildings.

As supplies of reclaimed slates dwindled, the couple received enquiries from heritage contractors and conservation architects for ‘new’ Collyweston stone slate – and this was the spark that set everything in motion. ‘Demand for a fresh supply of Collyweston stone slates was growing, and we knew there were still untouched seams below ground. We felt a responsibility to help preserve historic buildings by creating a fresh supply,’ says Nigel. Nigel and Viv took ownership of the business from Nigel’s dad, Claude, back in 2011. ‘When Dad retired, Viv and I discussed reopening the mine. It was a huge undertaking, but we wanted to revive the tradition of Collyweston slating and to make this remarkable stone available again – worldwide.’

A DECADE OF CRAFT, STONE & SUCCESS Today, their once-dormant mine is thriving; since reopening it has produced over 10,000 sqm of new slate, initially for their own projects, but now increasingly for local contractors, heritage specialists and private clients. ‘We are keen to work with everyone,’ Nigel explains. ‘Whether it’s supplying a handful of slates to repair a cottage roof or a full reroofing of a manor house, we want our new Collyweston slates to be accessible. They belong on historic buildings, but the slates also have a real future on new builds too.’ Nigel is also keen to challenge misconceptions. ‘For decades, reclaimed stone or cheaper alternatives were the only option. However, now we’ve got a healthy supply of new stone again, we want to shout about it. Local conservation officers have been incredibly supportive once they’ve seen the quality of the new slate and understand that supply can once again match demand.’

INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION The mine’s revival has captured attention far beyond the village. Collyweston Stone Slate Mine recently won: UK National Federation of Roofing Contractors Award Best Roof – Heritage Category (Christ’s College, Cambridge); and International Federation of Roofing Trades (IFD) Award Best International Pitched Roof (Christ’s College, Cambridge). Other prestigious projects using new Collyweston slate include: Bodley Court, King’s College, Cambridge; Old Westbury Gardens, Long Island, New York; Clare College, Cambridge; and The Hind Hotel, Wellingborough. SUSTAINABILITY AT HEART The story of Collyweston slate begins in the Jurassic era, over 150 million years ago. This fissile limestone, lying 12 metres below ground, nestling between sand and bedrock, is celebrated for its strength, longevity and unmistakable beauty. And while the material is ancient, Nigel and Viv’s approach is rooted firmly in the future. ‘We’ve worked hard to run as sustainable an operation as possible,’ Viv explains. Their efforts include: • Cutting CO₂ emissions by more than half compared with concrete alternatives • Using eco-friendly, electric machinery alongside traditional craftsmanship • Recycling rainwater and by-products • Creating wildlife-friendly habitats and supporting bat conservation Yes, bats. The mine is home to its own community of Pipistrelles and Natterer’s bats. ‘They use the mine as their hotel; it’s where they sleep. They breed elsewhere, but this is home for them. We’re very proud of that.’

THE MINING PROCESS Producing Collyweston slate is a laborious, skilled and highly specialised craft, taking around six weeks from excavation to finished product. ‘We’ve taken the old methods and adapted them using newer techniques where they make sense,’ Nigel says. The process starts with a Brokk 100 robotic machine pecking the stone ‘logs’ and cutting away the sand bed beneath the seam, allowing the stone above to drop in manageable sections. Once the stone is above ground, the ‘logs’ are submerged in water, then deep-frozen. This cycle of soaking, freezing and thawing is repeated until the natural fissile veins begin to separate. Finally, it’s time to split and dress the slates; skilled workers use a specialist cliving tool to split the stone before the slates are sawn square on three sides and finished with a dressing hammer to create their characteristic chipped lower edge, and a drill hole inserted for fixing on to the roof. The slates are lovingly crafted by hand into 28 different sizes, from 6 to 28 inches. ‘It takes real craftsmanship to create each slate and it’s a profession we’re passionate about keeping alive. We are pushing for a dedicated apprenticeship to be created to protect the profession and train the next generation of stone slaters.’

Annabel Miles is a well-known beauty therapist based at Oakham’s Olive Beauty, where her regular clients look forward to seeing both Annabel and her constant companion, Tabitha, the Cavachon

DEVOTED ANIMAL LOVER since early childhood, Annabel grew up with an assortment of both cats and dogs, but it was during the second pandemic lockdown that she and her husband Chris decided the time was right to add a puppy to their own household. ‘We had been discussing a puppy for a while and decided a small, non-shedding breed would suit us best,’ she recalls. Thorough research online led to extensive communication with a reputable breeder who insisted on stringent checks about potential ownership. ‘I was more than happy to comply with the checks, as it reassured me that they were serious about finding only the best homes for their litter.’ With six pups in the litter, Annabel chose Tabitha from a picture. ‘I knew I wanted a female and just fell in love with her face.’

Tabitha is a Cavachon – a cross between a King Charles Cavalier and a Bichon Frisé. The breed is known for its small size, gentle nature and soft fur. Cavachons make great pets for individuals looking for an affectionate canine companion or for families in need of a playful friend. Since they are a mixed breed, the looks and personalities of a Cavachon can vary depending on the traits they inherit from their parents. Despite this variability,

Cavachons are companion dogs that are designed to be loving house pets. They don’t have a strong prey drive or the need to work like some dogs have, but they are still playful and eminently trainable. While Cavachons aren’t very physically demanding dogs, they do require training, attention and regular grooming, which Annabel undertakes herself in a regular twice-daily routine to prevent Tabitha’s curly fur from becoming matted, as well as regular monthly visits to the groomer for a trim. With her loving, gentle nature, Tabitha accompanies Annabel to work and sits quietly in her crate or on a chair nearby while her clients receive their treatments. ‘She’s so popular with my clients and is a very calming presence in the salon. She loves children and is devoted to my young niece, India, and nephew, Max, who love playing with her. Tabitha is very easy going and submissive, so she was very easy to train and she just loves being surrounded by the people that love her.’ Fuss, cuddles and snoozing on the sofa are among Tabitha’s favourite things, with rain, loud sneezes and the sound of the Ring Doorbell being things she disapproves of most strongly. She also has the ‘spaniel nose’ and can detect a leftover treat in a pocket from a significant distance. ‘I would 100% recommend the breed as a very easy, devoted and loyal house dog, but a commitment to grooming is essential,’ advises Annabel. ‘Tabitha is so gentle and sweet natured – she absolutely suits my lifestyle down to the ground and goes everywhere with me as my sidekick. We are pretty inseparable. I adore her and I can’t imagine life without her. Like most people, I have had some difficult times in life, and without doubt she has given me a reason to get up, get out, walk her and look after her. She relies on me, and I rely on her. I think that’s something that most dog owners will relate to.’

Welland Valley Vets Nicholas Rudd-Jones met with Rachel Caplan, the founder of Welland Valley Vets in Stamford Rachel added: ‘Furthermore, we like to give our clients the time to reflect on possible options. We like to listen carefully to the needs of the client, understand and come to know their pet, and discuss all the options. We completely understand and appreciate how important pets are in people’s lives.’ Rachel’s Background Rachel grew up in our region. Her first degree was in Biomedical Sciences at Leeds University, after which she took a more commercial route into healthcare PR with a top London agency. But she always had a love of animals and soon wanted to apply her skills more practically and went on to do a second degree in veterinary sciences at Edinburgh University. She soon caught the veterinary bug and knew that this was what she wanted as her lifetime career. For the last decade she has worked as a vet in small animal practices, first in Bedford and then in Rutland. As well as being fully trained surgically, Rachel also achieved a further masters in Internal Medicine, and the practising side of being a vet remains incredibly important to her. ‘I really enjoy the clinical side of things,’ she told us. ‘And I also like the challenge of more complex cases, getting to the root of the problem and finding the best way forward on close consultation with the client.’

ACHEL CAPLAN recently bought the longestablished Clear Ridge Veterinary Surgery in the Empingham Road in Stamford, and has relaunched it as Welland Valley Vets with new purpose and energy. We started our meeting with a tour around the surgery. There is ample space for all the various functions of a vets, and good parking outside. Rachel wants to refresh the public parts over the coming months, but not lose the homely feel of the place. Rachel has reached a point in her career where she can leverage her leading-edge veterinary learning with a decade’s practice in the field. ‘I’ve always dreamed of having a practice where decisions are made with pets and their owners at the heart of it,’ she told me. ‘Now that dream’s real – and I couldn’t be more excited.’ The practice is already buzzing with plans, including a Welland Valley Vets Health Plan that includes annual checks, vaccinations and flea/worming treatments, plus a tailored nurse clinic for nail clipping and wellness check-ups. Rachel is also keen to support breeders and those venturing into owning an animal for the first time. She told me: ‘We always want to retain our independence as a practice, offering our clients and their pets continuity of care – wherever possible they come in and see the same person, so we can share the pet’s life journey together.’

IFE RITUALS, located in beautiful premises on Mill Street in Oakham, is a family-centred clinic offering a wide range of holistic therapies for people at every stage of life. Herbal Therapy: Ginny, an experienced medical herbalist, provides bespoke treatment for hay fever, digestive issues, anxiety and hormonal challenges. Her work reflects years of study and a deep understanding of how herbs interact with the body.

Practitioners work closely together to ensure clients are guided towards the most appropriate therapy from the outset. For those unsure where to begin, founder Jo George helps identify the right practitioner and treatment pathway. THE THERAPIES

Body Therapies: Life Rituals hosts three acupuncturists – Jo, Aelish and Kerry – whose collective experience covers physical, emotional and hormonal health. Jane offers reflexology, cupping massage therapy and Reiki, as well as LED light therapy, which can be especially helpful for skin conditions such as acne. Nikki provides dedicated Reiki, encouraging relaxation and energetic balance.

Talking Therapies: Emotional and mental-health support is available through two counsellors (Nikki and Jonathan) and Human Givens psychotherapist Stacey, whose structured, practical approach supports clients navigating stress, anxiety, low mood or life transitions. While some practitioners work solely with adults, Aelish, Stacey, Jane and Ginny also support children and teenagers, offering specialist, age-appropriate care.

Life Rituals’ Shared Philosophy Although each practitioner brings a different discipline, the team shares what Jo describes as a functional medicine approach. Put simply, this means looking at the root cause of a problem rather than applying a short-term, sticking-plaster solution. Functional medicine is both holistic and investigative. It considers how body systems, lifestyle, emotions and environment interconnect – and how imbalances in one area can influence another. The Badgers Den The Premium Grooming Oasis… Created For Men Nicholas Rudd-Jones was invited to spend a half day enjoying the delights of The Badgers Den, a male grooming parlour recently opened in Market Harborough

ROM THE MOMENT you enter The Badgers Den, you realise you are in a very special place. The place was buzzing when I arrived, with some people chatting, others getting treatments or introduced to the facilities, and two people playing pool. It is a space created just for men: a third for treatments (one room for nails, the other for facials/waxes/aesthetics); a third for barbering; and a third for hospitality.

THE TEAM & FACILITIES It is the combination of the team and the quality of these facilities, however, that make this place so special. There is a team of eight full-time staff altogether, covering barbering, treatments and hospitality, each highly experienced in their own field, and who between them will cater to your every need. The team have only been together a couple of months or so, but they already feel ‘like a family’, working together and visibly enjoying what they do. On arrival, I was greeted by Rebecca, Customer Experience Host: she asked me how I was and what I would like to drink. I chose to relax on the comfy sofas indoors, but in sunny weather the outside patio would have been a delightful alternative, or, had I been feeling more energetic, a game of pool perhaps before I got going with treatments. The important maxim of this excellent team is that you should never feel rushed. Co-owner Kevin Slade told me that just the social side alone creates new bonds between men. A father and son had come in recently as the son needed a haircut, but they ended up playing pool together and watching some football on the TV. The dad confided it was the best bonding with his son in ages. The Badgers Den just seems to have that effect. And the facilities are top-notch, finished to the very highest standards. Kevin is quite simply a perfectionist. The barber chairs, for example, have been imported from Japan and are almost unique in this country – they look super-cool and perform impressively. The treatment rooms have very classy wallpaper and finishes. The whole place is immaculately finished, and this really makes a difference to one’s pleasure and desire to stay around after a treatment.

THE TREATMENTS Once I had relaxed and taken a good look around The Den, Bethany introduced herself, and we got going with a head massage. She has 14 years’ experience, latterly as Spa Manager at Whittlebury Hall. We began the session with a detailed review of my health profile/allergies and a skin assessment. Then, the head massage transported me to another world of calm, with my face nurtured to the nth degree, including the application of ESPA products. I felt transformed by the end of the hour-long session, almost floating away. Then it was on to Liv for a hand massage. Liv trained at Rugby College and worked for a year or so in the industry but was attracted here because it enabled her to work at a sensible pace in order to be able to give the best service. As well as giving my hands a thorough service, we had a good chat, and that conversation was as much part of the experience. Afterwards I relaxed in the lounge for a while before heading off. What can I say except I would heartily recommend this spot to any man, whether you need a haircut, treatments or simply come in for a spot of camaraderie. You’re always most welcome. HOMEFIELD GRANGE, in Rushton, has flourished as a haven for rest, balance and transformation since opening in 2005. Founded by naturopath and wellness coach Suzanne Peck, it has built a loyal following for its holistic residential programmes, which bring together diagnostic testing, nutritional guidance, mind-body coaching, food training and downtime. Today, Homefield offers boutique spa facilities, a gym, therapeutic treatments and access to the surrounding countryside, including daily Nordic walking. The Lake Isle Celebrates 25 Years

This month The Lake Isle in Uppingham celebrates its 25th anniversary under the ownership of Richard and Janine Burton. Nicholas Rudd-Jones went to discover more about their successful journey

HE DAY I met with owners Richard and Janine they had just completed a full lunch service. I had expected them to want to take a break, but not a bit of it – they were still full of energy and talking about plans for the future. And I feel sure it is this energy that has driven them forward over the last quarter century to be in the top league of our region’s hostelries. A Major Accolade As if to confirm their hard work and excellence, they had literally just heard that the Good Hotel Guide was going to crown them as Best Restaurant with Rooms 2026. Quite an achievement. They are regulars in the Good Food Guide, too – this extract is from their 2025 entry: ‘The kitchen likes to mix and match globetrotting flavours, as in grilled sea bass with samphire pakora, toasted cucumber, mussels and sorrel raita… the results are always on-point

with consistently high standards’ across the board. For many years now they have also retained their 2-star AA rosette rating to reflect the excellence and consistency of the cooking. Six Reasons it Shines So, what is it that sets the food at The Lake Isle apart? Well, firstly the experience and excellence of the two chefs, Janine and Stuart Mead – and the fact they have both been there from the start. Secondly, as well as having a wealth of experience, they still love to discuss food and new ideas. They still meet every morning over coffee to discuss the plans for the day and new recipe ideas, which is remarkable. Just a few days before my visit, they had come up with their latest creation: ‘A taste of the vegetable plot’. The idea of this dish is to experiment with vegetables in desserts, something that had long fascinated Janine. And the result? Sticky toffee and parsnip

pudding, served with bitter chocolate and beetroot delice, sweet potato and maple ice cream, and orange-squash pie (see photo opposite, bottom row, centre). ‘We really enjoyed experimenting with this one,’ Janine told me. ‘I was especially pleased with the deep colour and earthy taste of the beetroot/chocolate combination. The dish has proved very popular with diners and a big talking point at table.’ Thirdly, they source as much produce as they can locally; and grow a lot of their own vegetables. Fourthly, the menu changes regularly, and the lunch menu changes every month. It’s posted up on the bar two weeks before it’s due to commence, and diners are often tempted back to try new dishes. This restaurant never sits still; there is something new to try every time you go back as well as the old favourites, and this is important to regulars. Fifthly, a quality wine cellar. Richard has maintained the same high standards set by his predecessor. He is always pleased to talk wine to guests and suggest something new, eg a Château Musar from Lebanon, or a chilled Chinon from the Loire with fish. Sixthly, the food is backed up by excellent service, which is friendly, attentive and well balanced – spot on. People come back again and again because of that traditional feeling of being looked after – on arrival, your coat is taken, and you are always offered the option to relax in the bar area prior to or after a meal. Exceptional Value for Money Finally, it’s about the fabulous value. Some people still imagine it will be more expensive than it is, but not a bit of it. The value here, especially at lunchtime, outstrips anything else you will come across in the region. For £25 for two courses or £29 for three, you get incredibly good food and excellent service – in fact, better than many places that charge twice the price. Boutique Rooms, Beautifully Updated Richard has engaged in a continuing programme of bedroom improvement as the market has switched more and more from business to leisure. The number of rooms has been reduced from 12 to 10, as each bedroom has been upgraded. ‘People want more luxury these days,’ Richard told me. The rooms here make an excellent ‘staycation’ for couples in our region with the certainty of great food and drink and a delightful market town to explore, and great walking opportunities in the surrounding beautiful countryside. Celebrating the Past, Shaping the Future Richard, Janine and the team are always thinking of what they can improve, but this is an evolutionary rather than revolutionary process, which is just how their customers like it. This year they plan to freshen up the restaurant with a look at the ceiling and lighting. And on the menu front, The Lake Isle’s 25th Year Dine for Less Offer will be available from this month until the spring. Richard notes: ‘We have no plans to slow down; we just want to keep on improving and satisfying our customers.’ And we, the punters, look forward to enjoying delicious meals here for years to come. how it all began Somehow, with The Lake Isle, it feels it was always meant to be for Richard and Janine. They have worked in the hospitality industry all their careers, and first met when they were at catering college in Leicester. When they wanted to ‘get away from it all’, their establishment of choice was The Lake Isle, which they visited regularly for 15 years from their home in Leicestershire. The Lake Isle name is taken from the poem ‘Lake Isle of Innisfree’ by WB Yeats, with its sentiments of peace, relaxation and tranquillity – And I shall have some peace there’ – and that is exactly what Richard and Janine found when they first stayed, and true of course to this day. Over time they became friendly with the previous owners, David and Claire, and when they decided to sell, it was almost written in the stars that Richard and Janine would become the new owners. They inherited an establishment with a good reputation and a notable wine cellar. It was said that David had one of the largest collections of half-bottles in the country, and Richard bought the cellar too, thus ensuring a tradition of wine excellence that continues to this day. The year 2000 turned out to be a very busy year for Richard and Janine, getting married, selling their home to help fund the purchase of The Lake Isle, taking on the ownership and still running their busy tearoom near Bradgate Park. And, inevitably, for the first few months they worked seven days a week, 16 hours a day, and barely took a wage. As more funds became available, so Richard and Janine embarked on a programme of continuous improvement, upgrading the rooms and totally refurbishing the restaurant, all the time retaining the period features but giving the decor lots of contemporary flair. They slightly changed the name from The Lake Isle Restaurant & Town House Hotel to The Lake Isle, restaurant with rooms, and both sides of the business have been loudly applauded by customers over the years.

Sue Lee and Jean Orpin have been Members of Stamford Horticultural Society for many years and have come across a number of well-known horticultural celebrities with local connections. Can you match the photographs to their profiles?

I am a landscape architect with a business based in Rutland. Before I came to Rutland I was curator of Hyde Hall Gardens. I have won many awards for garden design and I am a regular panellist on BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time. My ‘Welcome to Yorkshire Gardens’ won the People’s Choice award in 2016, at Chelsea. I have been listed in House & Garden annually as one of the top garden designers.

I am a landscape architect based near Peterborough. I am a regular panellist on BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time and I also write a weekly column in the Sunday Telegraph. I have won six gold medals at RHS Chelsea. My mother is the sister of David Austin, the rose breeder, who named a rose after me.

I am a garden designer and horticulturist living near Stamford. My interest in gardening started with helping my grandfather on his allotment in Devon. I started my career with an apprenticeship at the North Devon Parks department. I have won seven gold medals at RHS Chelsea Flower Show. I am a presenter on BBC Gardeners’ World. I have toured the UK and across the world giving talks about how plants have shaped my life. I also set up an academy with Homebase to train apprentices.

I opened my first garden centre near Kettering. I wrote a column for Garden News magazine and then became a full-time journalist editing Practical Gardening. In 1970 I presented Gardening Diary for Anglia TV. I made a guest appearance on Gardeners’ World, then became the lead presenter. I opened my garden in Rutland in 1970.

I am a zoologist, writer and gardener. I am also a conservationist and have raised awareness of the loss of wild flowers. I campaigned at Chelsea Flower Show, which resulted in a fashion for flower rich habitats. I cultivated wild flowers from disused local fields and sowed them on the banks of new bypasses. Forever connected with my home, the beautiful Ashton Estate, where you can now stay, I am also an entomologist and wrote Fleas, Flukes and Cuckoos, which was well received. I trained as a gardener at Burghley House, Stamford, and then went on to study at college. I worked at Salle Park in Norfolk for eight years, renovating the walled garden for pleasure and for produce. Afterwards I worked at Blatherwycke, restoring the walled garden there before taking on my current job.

My husband and I took on the formidable task of restoring a derelict 12-acre garden. The garden has been owned by my husband’s family since 1561, but by 2001 it was in a derelict state as a result of two world wars, and the house had been demolished. We regarded this as a challenge and set about restoring it. Today it is particularly noted for cultivating 40 varieties of sweet peas and for its large number of snowdrops in winter.

My love of gardening came from restoring the family garden, which I moved to with my husband and daughter in Sussex. I have written for a number of newspapers and have been associate editor for Gardens Illustrated. I lived on the Burghley estate while I was writing The Tulip, my most widely read book. I have received a number of awards including the Veitch Memorial Medal from the Royal Horticultural Society.

I went to Writtle Agricultural College and worked at nurseries until my father bought a piece of land in Rutland. I then worked with my father on his nursery and garden. I still carry on his peat-free and organic principles. I have appeared on BBC Gardeners’ World, written books and given talks and workshops locally. I am President of the Cottage Garden Society.
