President’s Perspective

Here we are, half way through the year. It is my pleasure to present the Presidents Report for July 2026. Not sure about you all, but this year sure is flying by. The seasons started off well but the dry times have kicked in. Hopefully the weather gods open up shortly for us all. Thinking of our members in Southern Queensland and NSW who are very dry.

The Charolais breed continues to demonstrate its value through outstanding performance, efficiency, growth, and carcass quality, maintaining its reputation as a leading terminal sire option within commercial and seedstock operations alike. This has been proven with the positive results from the Sales in the southern regions. With a similar number of bulls sold at auction, clearance rate increased by 11% to 85%. Top priced bull, Rangan Valuable V76 (AI) (P) sold for $45,000 to Tarcombe Charolais, Seymour, Victoria and Agrigene, Wangaratta, Victoria. Average price $9,475 (increase of $1582 over 2025). There has also been a strong demand for females with 170 sold at auction to a top of $28,000 for Palgrove Digit P485E purchased by Yaccamunda Investments, Collinsville, Qld and an average of $8,031. These results are a great sign for Charolais to continue its strong hold as the number one choice within the cross breeding world.

Char Trek, the Charolais Youth Cattle event was held in Toowoomba from 15th to 18th January. I was lucky enough to attend with my family and can say that it was extremely well run. Our three children had a great time saying it was one of the best youth event they had been to. They learnt a lot and came away with great memories and even a few ribbons. Congratulations to all the place getters, I hope all the kids had a great time and a special mention to Paige Brown for winning a special heifer kindly donated by Moongool Charolais.

The Charolais World Congress organisation is well underway. I thank the Committee for their hard work and dedication in organising this international event. A lot of work goes into these events to ensure they are successful which is greatly appreciated. This event will be a great platform to promote the Charolais breed across the beef industry.

I look forward to meeting new faces and catching up with old friends at the Meet and Greet followed by a few days of seeing some great lines of Charolais cattle and attending some networking events.

Thank you to the Vendors who have entered a terrific line up of Australian Charolais genetics to the National Sale being held at the Congress. There will be 13 lots available with some tremendous opportunities to propel breeding programs forward.

Entries for the upcoming Feedlot and Carcase Competition hosted by the Queensland Region are now closed. This year there is an incredible 505 entries, an increase of approximately 100 from last year. We extend our appreciation to Freestone Feedlot and Bartholomew and Co for their contribution to the success of this event.

This competition is certainly a great opportunity to showcase Charolais cattle throughout the beef industry. Judging focuses on key industry traits including weight gain, carcase yield, muscling, fat cover, and overall carcase quality. Every year we encourage members, youth participants, and commercial producers to get involved and support this important industry initiative and thank those who have entered cattle. I look forward to another successful event.

The spring bull sale season is just around the corner and no doubt will present a strong line up of sires and commercial prospects. Best wishes to all vendors for a successful sale season.

Membership participation remains vital to the future of the Society. We continue to welcome new breeders while encouraging younger generations to become involved in the industry. The enthusiasm shown by our youth members gives confidence in the future of the breed and our Society. Throughout the year, the Society has remained focused on promoting the breed, supporting members, and strengthening industry engagement.

Once again, I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Charolais office team (Colin, Deearn and Hayley) who continue to run a well organised operation behind the scenes and keep us all on track.

When I commenced my role with the Charolais Society of Australia it was with a strong knowledge of the breeds capability in the paddock and other industry sectors. Having had the opportunity to breed registered Charolais as a younger person, certainly provided a great insight for that. I have also had the opportunity to breed other European cattle breeds and there is no doubt in my mind, for Australian breeding programs Charolais provide more opportunity for commercial producers.

Involvement with Charolais Charbray International has expanded that comprehension from visiting with breeders across several continents and seeing the dominance our breed has in many markets. The immeasurable take away Charolais Charbray International has provided personally, is a global network of sensational people involved in our breeds. Be they breed executives, scientists, geneticists or breeders, in their own way they have provided great friendship and shared much knowledge. These interactions through activities such as Breed Development meetings, World Congresses, Technical Conferences plus involvement in the International Youth Program have enabled learning opportunities and career development.

On the eve of our World Congress, Australian Charolais breeders can take great pride in what we refer to as the Australian Charolais type. There are no doubts that Australian production systems are vastly different to European systems where our breed developed. Our members over many years have tweaked attributes to focus on what is important here. The core identity of the Charolais breed remains as such and unlike many other imported breeds is visually identifiable. We should always respect the contribution of those that laid the foundation stones.

Since that first Charolais sired calf arrived in January 1970, our members have blended genetics from around the world and pursued cattle that can thrive in our unique environment. We have been fortunate with some of the country’s leading cattle breeders choosing to be involved in our breed. Their knowledge and skill have truly given our breed a position of relevance in the industry. Australia is vast and has many challenges in animal production. Heat, drought, paddock size spring to mind as challenges that have demanded easy doing, easy calving breeding stock capable of grass and grain production systems. The footprint of so many have shaped our past, drives our present and impacts our future.

We hope that our international visitors have the opportunity to take in the progress the Charolais breed has made in Australia and the environment it thrives in. We should also remember many of the major cattle breeds arrived in Australia in the 1880’s, our first semen importation was 1968. We may have taken a while to get to the starting line, but we are proving a breed with great endurance.

There is an article in this magazine on the annual Toogoolawah weaner sale. Consistently this sale is dominated by Charolais progeny and demand for those calves is exceptional. This demand is not driven by glossy slick advertising. The drive, both from the vendors and purchasers is performance. Our Charolais motto, Cross into profit is validated, pen, after pen, after pen at this event.

The Charolais breed is the feature at the EKKA (Brisbane Royal) and we are expecting a big showing. This is fitting when you consider the Charolais interbreed record at this event over many years. Sponsors have come on board and exhibitors will be well rewarded for success. The National sale concept returns this year with opportunities to dig into successful programs like never before.

The National sale will be held during the Gala dinner on Friday night. This will be a big night for the breed with over 200 attendees expected. After the EKKA the Congress delegates will work their way out to Roma before heading down through the Great Dividing Range to Sydney. The goal is to highlight the differing Australian landscapes as much as possible in twelve days. At the conclusion of the Congress a smaller group will continue for the Victorian post tour event. With such a large country and short timeframe it is not possible to visit every state and member. We hope that the congress and post tour itinerary provides an insight to our visitors of what we face here in our production systems. Take the opportunity to introduce yourself to our international delegates, and help them get the most from their Australian visit.

Even with the dry spell many areas have experienced in the first half of this year we have seen increased demand for Charolais sires. Based on auction sales to the end of May, clearance rates for Charolais bulls has increased 11% and averages are up over $1,500 per bull. This has been seen over a wide geographical area indicating the breed has many strings to it bow. We don’t claim to be every system solution but when it comes to heterosis and crossbreeding benefits, we need to be considered. Market reports indicate that Charolais genetics are highly considered by backgrounders, feedlots and processors.

In the Queensland Country Life (QCL) newspaper (April 24) it was interesting to read their Autumn bull sale summary. Nutrien Stud stock agent, Colby Eade commented “a big trend was an increased interest in crossbreeding.” He added “ that’s driven by feed lotters, it’s driven by the cents a kilogram that you can get at the feedlot weighbridge” There was a big Angus push three years ago and in the last two years, Charolais have been used more in crossbreeding programs”. Observing the demand for Charolais sires and reconciling with market reports it is clear Charolais are having an impact on the industry. A report on the Sarina Combined Agents Battle of the Breeds show and sale in May highlighted a pen of Charolais/Droughtmaster cross steers was the overall champion pen. The vendor, the Symonds family, Mt Flora Cattle Co, sold their two pens of Charolais/Droughtmaster-cross steers sold for $1630/head while the pure Droughtmasters made $1500.

Sale results such as the above are common as producers are rewarded for the extra weight gain provided by the Charolais genetics. A strong aspect of crossbreeding with Charolais sires is producers can keep their female breeding herd aligned to the requirements of their environment and get direct heterosis benefit in one cross. Keeping the breeders aligned to the environment is advantageous with achieving conception and eventual calf numbers weaned. The fact, the crossbred article is desired in the marketplace is just icing on the cake.

There is a report on the highly successful “Char Trek” youth event, last January in Toowoomba. This event featured a strong focus on education and it was pleasing to see attendees taking the opportunity to develop their skills. To the youth committee and all the volunteers, judges, lecturers and parents a huge thank you. We have already seen attendees achieve success at events since.

Dust, flies, heat & dry grass, just a typical Australian summer day. Charolais have adapted exceptionally well to Australia.

Congratulations to Paige Brown on winning the heifer donated by the Price Family at Moongool. Paige is the granddaughter of breed stalwarts Kel and Lesley Bridges and has access to genetics from the family herd. This heifer gives her an outcross from a high achieving herd and is sure to provide a boost for her young stud.

The event saw the Young Char age group introduced and these youngsters (5-7 years) had a great time. Their level of involvement was unbelievable and this section will become a staple in future events. We also celebrated the fourth generation of an Australian Charolais family participate in a society event with the next generation of Noller’s involved. From a society perspective we have committed to an increased level of breed advertising this year. A good percentage of this increase will be in a digital format targeting beef producers in specific areas. Our usual print format advertising continues and our social media is very active. If you know of Charolais commercial success please let the office know in a timely manner. We welcome leads on promoting the breed.

This year we saw Deearn reduce her hours in the office. She is available Monday to Friday 8.00am to 3.00pm (Eastern time). With her level of efficiency and increased electronic data submissions we do not anticipate any delays in processing time. Talking of processing times! you need to budget at least four weeks processing time for genomic testing from when the lab receives your samples. Remember all sires and ET donors must be genotyped prior to progeny being registered. I am incredibly proud of the efficiencies and workload our Charolais team achieve in the office. This has been evident during the lead up to the World Congress and I sincerely extend my appreciation to Hayley and Deearn. With the input of our board members we try and make society interactions as stress free and painless as possible. If you ever need assistance of any kind please do not hesitate to contact the office team.

Our friends in New Zealand are hosting the International Technical Conference in April next year. With everything happening here this year hosting the world, their trip will be an excellent opportunity to catch up with new international friends, see some amazing countryside, cattle and enjoy their hospitality. The Feedlot and Carcase competition conducted by the Queensland Region has reached new heights. Over 500 head of Charolais influenced steers and heifers have entered the Freestone Feedlot for evaluation in the sixth year of competition.

It’s hard to imagine back in 2021 we had fifty-three entries. It is a credit to the entrants they are prepared to enter their cattle in this trial, that is run under strict real-world conditions. The only difference to these cattle and a mob from any other producer is having a photograph taken prior to ending the trial. This is used in the results publication for comparison between animals and over the years has built a great resource for the society. We see pure Charolais, three quarter, half breds and having the image when the results are tabulated makes for interesting comparisons.

Entries in the trial are evaluated for feedlot performance, carcase quality and financial return ($ value add). Youth members can compete in the open section as well as a designated youth section. Animals can be entered as single or pens of three with all animals evaluated within their sex as individuals. The pens of three must have all three carcases in the specified weight range. Carcase weights are acceptable from 240kg to 451kg dressed.

The power of information can never be underestimated. With this cohort we are looking at over 1,700 head evaluated in six years. Breeding cattle is a long-term proposition and having access to quantifiable data is a great benefit. Many factors such as structure are visual, which cannot be said for all the traits that contribute to carcase quality. Carcase scoring is based on Meat Standards Australia grading (MSA).

Meat Standards Australia (MSA) is the world’s leading eating quality grading program for beef and sheep meat, developed to improve the eating quality and consistency of red meat. The MSA annual report quoted “The MSA program delivered more than ever back to the farm-gate, with an estimated $409 million in additional returns for MSA compliant beef carcases.” Since inception the beef grading has seen 53 million carcases graded.

Weight gain is based on a 100 day feeding period and no cattle receive HGP treatments. The cattle are feed in large pens in normal feedlot pens. The market report from the Roma saleyards is used to calculate an entry value of each animal which is then compared to actual carcase pricing to generate a $ value. This financial value feeds back into selecting the overall performance champion animal.

The Charolais breed is very fortunate to have two exceptional partners in this event. Cliff, Wendy, Jaymee and the team at Freestone Feedlot do a tremendous job feeding the cattle and assist us to do the photography (two days) in the midst of their busy days. Garth, Carolyn, Rhys and the team at Bartholomew and Co assist in induction, marketing the cattle and so much more. Results will be presented at a Region dinner on the 21st November in Toowoomba.

The Bovine Revolution

In any walk of life, the word “CHANGE” can be polarizing. Many industries are fast adopters of change, progression and some are not. Agriculture could be termed an enigma, it historically has featured the absolute traditionalist and the future innovator. For those in the traditionalist mindset, change in agricultural practices can generate strong emotions and responses.

Writing this editorial in 2026 the introduction of European beef breeds into Australia was a truly successful innovation. The value these breeds have offered to the industry particularly through crossbreeding programs is significant. When first introduced back in the 1970s the performance of some existing cattle breeds was questionable for profitability. Australia after the world wars, had a population of immigrants that had first hand knowledge of the performance of these “exotic” breeds and many of these farmers headed the call to introduce the higher performing European type breeds.

Introducing genetics that could improve growth rate and carcase characteristics was a great asset to the industry in those years. It was not without angst, in the “Country Life” newspaper, September 5, 1969, the headline read “Better without Charolais”. Fortunately, we had some strong advocates for the benefits of the European breeds. In the “Farmer and Stockbreeder” June 1968, journalist Barry Wilson wrote “Charolais semen will almost definitely be allowed into Australia in 1969, and equally certainly the impact will be spectacular. This semen must come from the United Kingdom as no other source can comply with the stringent regulations covering Bluetongue & Foot & Mouth.”

As an island nation, Australia has had a protective barrier to the introduction of diseases and pests that could impact our industry like Bluetongue and Foot & Mouth. The government stance on bovine imports lead to obstacles in the development of new breeds here in Australia. In the case of the European breeds of cattle, semen could be imported from the United Kingdom but not from Europe. Live cattle could be imported from New Zealand but not directly from Europe.

A look back at our Australian beef industry identifies some monumental dates. There are four years in the history of the Australian beef industry that will forever be etched in history. The first was 1788 when two bulls and five cows arrived on the first fleet, the first cattle in Australia. The aforementioned two bulls and five cows escaped from the first settlement in Sydney. Seven years later these cattle and their descendants were found at Cowpastures, (near present-day Camden), their numbers having grown to more than forty head.

The purebred sector commenced in Australia with the arrival of the Devon breed in 1800. This hardy breed had great popularity. Remember tallow back in those days had great value. Used for cooking, food preservation, soap and candles, cattle with significant fat distribution were valued. The Angus breed arrived in 1824 and the Hereford in 1826. Many of the British breeds like Red Poll, Lincoln Red, South Devon were also popular and bred in numbers. The British breeds became the basis of the Australian beef industry.

A true test of tradition came in 1933 when Brahman genetics from the United States were introduced. Considerably different to the British breeds that dominated the country these genetics took hold in the northern industry and by 2024, Brahman genetics could be found in approximately one-half of the national beef herd of 26 million head, with 75 per cent of the northern herd being Brahman. Zebu genetics were bred in the Melbourne Zoo prior to this and some males were sold to cattle producers, however this was the first significant arrival of Brahman genetics in Australian production systems.

The other significant year was 1969 when the first European breed semen entered the country. Charolais were the first breed involved with the first European blood calf born on January 7th 1970. This calf was bred by the Hyde Family and sired by Sucre, from a Poll Shorthorn dam.

The demand for the new Charolais breed was recorded at a high level. British Semen Services had orders for more than 24,000 doses of semen before semen entered the country. The Stock Journal (SA) reported in January 1970, Australians had placed orders for more than $750,000 of semen to be delivered in the next two years. It is prudent to remember artificial insemination was also in its infancy here and this, for many farmers was a leap into the unknown. Documents from the Hyde family who owned the first calf born in Australia, show Sucre semen priced at $11.50 a straw.

Simmental and Limousin imports followed very quickly as well as several other breeds. The first Simmental calf was born in 1971. Some twenty odd European breeds have entered Australia over the last 56 years with varying level of success. Demand for Charolais semen was huge and very quickly half-bred calves began to drop. Shipments of live Charolais and Charolais cross animals also arrived from New Zealand, quickly giving Charolais a presence in Australia. The new societies quickly recorded 1000+ membership and the breeds grew quickly.

Back in the 1970s the southern beef industry was dominated by Herefords and many breeding policies were driven strongly by visual standards. Some of the desirable characteristics did not necessarily have strong correlation to performance. The majority of cattle were being finished on grass and this dictated the type of cattle being fed. As feed lotting become a thing the need for cattle that had better conversion capability became more desirable.

With this large commercial base of red and white cattle, Simmental overtook the Charolais as an early preferred breed in many regions. Their red and white colour blended in well with the Hereford in crossbreeding programs. The Simmental breed at the time also had board members such as Harry M Miller, a renowned marketing expert that drove their advertising programs successfully.

The initial Charolais importations of semen from the United Kingdom which was heavily influenced from French genetics was supplemented early in the 1970s when North American semen imports became available. This saw the first poll Charolais sires introduced. With our need to breed up from other breeds, many poll, this laid the foundation for quality poll Charolais here in Australia. During the mid1980 period Australian stud breeders followed the North American trend to larger framed cattle and the type of registered cattle changed significantly. At the conclusion of this period the Limousin breed rose to rank as the preferred European breed in the industry.

“ I have not set out to be pessimistic about the likely success of Charolais in Australia. But I feel the pitfalls must be pointed at this stage. The Australian environment, both for climate and management, is vastly different to that of many areas where Charolais have been used. It’s comparative performance here is unknown, but the manner in which it is tested and the educational program that parallels its arrival in Australia will, to my mind, be crucial.

During this period, the Charolais breed was driven largely by commercially focused cattle breeders which has contributed to the strong base the breed enjoys today. Charolais were fortunate to attract some city based investment with these breeders looking at long term involvement in the industry.

Toward the later part of the 1990’s and since then the benefits of commercially based breeding objectives and continued breed promotion saw the Charolais make large in roads into the northern beef industry. The compatibility of the Charolais and bos indicus breeds began to grow in momentum. Across the continent the breed was fortunate to have breeders that drove the evolution of what we refer to as the Australian Charolais type. This maintains the attributes that made the breed popular initially, with traits that make it suitable for the unique environment conditions Australia challenges beef producers with.

Statistics generated by the Australian Registered Cattle Breeders Association (ARCBA) indicate Charolais became the dominant European breed for primary registrations in 2003 when they registered 7,013 head. Charolais have retained this registration advantage since then. A milestone was reached in 2009 when over 10,000 registrations were recorded for the first time. This level of breed registration continued for several years until drought reduced the breeding herds. The 10,000-registration level was recorded again in 2024. ARCBA statistics show Charolais recorded 47% of European breed calf registrations in 2024 highlighting the preference for the breed in the industry today.

Now the Charolais breed is recognized for the high performance capability the breed empowers their progeny with. Heterosis benefits of crossbreeding are well established and many cattle producers take advantage of this. The Charolais breed has truly erased any doubt that they may not adapt to the Australian environment. Charolais sires have proven they are suitable for both northern and southern markets systems. The dominance the breed has established in the northern breeding areas is outstanding adding benefits to all sectors of the production chain.

In 2025 Charolais sires sold at auction, average price rose considerably by $1,078 to $11,885. This strong average pushed the gross value of Charolais bull sold at auction to $21,107,479, the second highest in breed history behind the results achieved in 2022.

The introduction of European breeds into the Australian beef industry has been mixed, with the Charolais breed one of the stand out performers. The position the breed now enjoys in the industry is a testament to the belief early adopters acted on. The pathway to today hasn’t always

been easy but the ability of the breed to perform in the paddock has kept the momentum going. Where once Charolais was a disruption, now we are firmly entrenched as a valued contributor to the Australian beef industry. When expected sale nominations indicate 4,850 Charolais influenced weaners from a total 5,800 head on offer, it is fair to say Charolais dominate the annual Shepherdson and Boyd Toogoolawah weaner sale.

This annual event features pen after pen of quality Charolais cross weaners predominantly from the local region. The performance of these Charolais Bos Indicus cross calves brings repeat buyers year after year. Shepherdson and Boyd yarded about 5,800 head of weaners at the annual show and sale, mostly from repeat vendors around the south east, west to Tambo and north to Maryborough. Repeat buyers Brigodoon Cattle Company, Wandoan, and Countryco agents, Blackwater, featured heavily in early bidding. There was a quiet confidence prior to the sale that was validated once bidding commenced. The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator had rallied about 70 cents in the fortnight before the sale and weather reports were favourable. The Queensland Country Life reported most steers in medium to good condition went for $1600 to $1800 in the first hour of selling, up more than $200 on 2025. Eskdale Cattle Co principals Matt and Melissa George sold the two lead pens of steers for $1830 and $1850, and won champion pen of heifers. The Eskdale cattle had been yard-weaned and run on pasture for 10 days before the sale.

Later in the sale, a pen of six Charolais-cross feeder steers offered by Harry Mort, Mount Mort, sold for $2300. John Luck, Luck Farming, Mount Mort, won the champion pen of steers for 13 Charolais-cross that went on to sell for $1800.

At this sale Charolais cross sale pens are judged by a Charolais appointed judge and awards for champion pen of steer and heifers are given. Independently a judge of all sale entries selects their choice of champion pens.

Judge of the Charolais Society awards this year was youth member, Gabby Stokes, Mount Walker. Gabby Stokes commented “it was an honour to judge the Charolais section at the Toogoolawah Weaner Sale and to say I was impressed by the strong line up of cattle would be an understatement. Of the 5,790 head yarded, Charolais genetics dominated many of the pens creating a white sea across the saleyards, which was extremely impressive to see. As I walked through the pens, many of the lines were so close in quality that separating them became a real tough.

The Champion Pen of Charolais Steers, exhibited by Eskdale Cattle Company, was one of the first pens I looked at during the day and continued to stand out every time I came back to them. Their overall evenness, carcase attributes and consistency across the pen made them hard to go past and ultimately saw them selected as Champion Pen of Steers. It was also great to see these steers go on to top the sale at $1,850 later in the day.

The Champion Pen of Charolais Heifers, owned by R & C Buckham, was another even line of females that were very similar in type and I believe will go on to make outstanding breeders. Their overall frame, while still maintaining plenty of femininity, made them very hard to overlook. Overall, the consistency across the Charolais cattle at the Toogoolawah Weaner Sale really showcased the performance and value of Charolais bulls within breeding programs, with the quality across the sale being a real credit to all vendors.”

All breeds Champion steer pen vendor Mr Luck said it was a good result after an ordinary season in terms of rainfall. “They are all out of a Brahman-cross cow, straight off Mum,” he said. The Charolais influence is evident in the photo of these calves on the next page.

The average for steers finished at $1462. By comparison, weaner steers fetched an average of $1252 and up to $1600 at the 2025 sale, in a local season that many described as exceptional. The best of the heifers sold for $1400 and $1410 on Friday, with most better condition pens going for $1000 to $1200.

Eskdale’s champion pen of Charolais-cross heifers sold for $1240. The Eskdale weaners are Charolais out of Santa Gertrudis, Red Angus based females. At the 2025 Toogoolawah weaner show and sale, heifers sold to $1300 and averaged $945.

Credit to the Charolais breed, the consistency of these weaner cattle from dams of many breeds is amazing. The phenotypic dominance of the breed both in colouration and growth and muscle pattern is obvious. The other exceptional feature of these calves is their temperament. Visiting this sale over many years the calm nature of these weaner calves is very evident and no doubt aids settling into their new environments. The performance of these calves for their purchasers has driven the strong repeat buyer gallery with the same names called every year.

The old adage of keeping your cow herd in tune to your environment and building profit by crossbreeding is truly validated by these calves. The dams are a wide range of bos indicus infused breeds that thrive in the forest, hill and tick country many of these calves are raised in. The Charolais sire adds increased muscle pattern and growth capacity that makes these calves attractive to feedlots and grass finishing production systems. Many of the dams would be crossbred themselves adding maximum heterosis effect in with the Charolais sire. These calves thrive once they hit increased nutritional conditions and prove our motto “cross into profit with Charolais”.

An analysis of breed composition and price attained show a clear advantage to the Charolais infused pens. There were 124 pens of steers offered. Seventy nine were Charolais infused. Thirty one pens sold for $1650 per head or better, of these pens, 24 were Charolais. See the graph below for the breed composition spread of top priced pens. When you consider these pens could be ten to twenty plus animals a price differential of $100 per head very quickly adds up in favour of crossing into profit with Charolais.

This annual weaner sale is a credit to the team at Shepherdson and Boyd. Year after year their clients offer an outstanding run of predominantly Charolais influenced calves that meet buyers’ expectations. It is a sale worth visiting for any cattleperson.

Charolais Feature Brisbane Royal 2026

Charolais had always maintained a strong presence at the Brisbane Royal show (a.k.a. the EKKA). The influence of the Charolais breed on the Queensland beef industry has been a significant driver of this success. In the prestigious interbreed Champion of Champions, Charolais have taken the trophy 23 times in the awards’ 36 year history. This award is judged on a breed pair consisting of the two grand champions. With the attendance of our World Congress delegates the anticipation of a great display is building. With the support from many sponsors, over $30,000 in prizemoney is available in the stud Charolais and led steer competitions.

The highest scoring Charolais sired carcase will win $2,000 thanks to the sponsorship of Chris Knox and Helen Alexander, DSK Charolais. If that carcase wins grand champion led steer carcase it wins another $10,000 supported by the Queensland Region. Expect some great Charolais steers this year with this level of support.

Early indications have Charolais stud entries from Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Judging this year will be on Friday 7th August with Interbreed competitions on Saturday August 8th. In the early 2000’s Charolais entries were huge and we anticipate this will be the largest Charolais showing since then. This feature breed judging will showcase the diversity of genetics and type within the Australian Charolais population. A highly regarded Australian beef industry breeder will judge the feature show.

Led steers will be judged on the 5th August. The Charbray section will also be judged on Friday 7th August. The Charolais Society extends their sincere appreciation to the EKKA Beef Cattle committee for their assistance in staging this feature.

After judging the World Congress Gala Dinner will be held at Voco (85-87 North Quay) in the city. The 2026 National sale will be held during this event. Charolais Charbray International

The mutual cooperation in the mid 1960’s that enabled the formation of an international Charolais organisation continues today. Charolais Charbray International has had several name changes over the last 60 years but still has the core objective of international cooperation is still strong.

The Charolais breed was identified during the Middle Ages on the Charollais and Brionnais farmlands. It was chosen by the breeders of these regions for its strong, lean, muscle structure and exceptional growth potential. These traits were desirable all over the world in the first quarter of the 20th century. This was enhanced by the medical community’s recommendation for leaner diets and the development of refrigeration, which made it unnecessary to have a layer of fat on the carcasses to preserve them during transportation.

Emile Maurice was the first breeder to understand the potential of the breed and during the 1950s spent lavishly to make the Charolais breed known in Europe and throughout the world. His sense of diplomacy and negotiation, his knowledge of the English and Spanish languages, his moral standing and acquired experience would make him the true ambassador for the Charolais breed for many years.

His efforts successfully resulted in the exportation of Charolais breeding stock to numerous countries and the creation of a Charolais breeders association wherever the original core group was of sufficient size. In 1964, Emile Maurice proposed the creation of an International Federation of these association which would take the name of FIAERBC (Fédération Internationale des Associations d’Eleveurs de Charolais). On September 20th 1965 during the 100th anniversary of the Charolais Herdbook of France, representatives from Argentina, Brazil, Bahamas, Columbia, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Portugal, USA, Canada and Uruguay met for the purpose of creating the International Charolais Federation. At this meeting consensus was achieved and the international organisation was formed. A report from this meeting read “it was obvious that due to the extreme geographical and climate conditions of the countries represented, that it was impossible to set rules that suited everyone. We believe quite a lot can be gained through better relations between Charolais breeders, and by exchanging experiences international achievements and aims”.

From this beginning World Congress gatherings have been held in South America, North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. In 1999, this federation would modernize its statutes and take the name of Charolais International. In 1994 a Technical Conference was introduced. Initially this was limited to organisation staff until 2015 when Technical conferences were opened up for all to attend. The International Charolais community has two international events which are both held biennially.

1. World Congress

The World Congress is held in even numbered years and is open to all Charolais enthusiasts. The World Congress is hosted by a different country each year. The host country is determined by the voting delegates of Charolais Charbray International (CCI) at an Annual General Meeting. Any member in good standing can apply to host the World Congress. The host country is usually decided 4 years prior to the event; however, a country can apply to host in a particular year. Congresses aim to meet a balance between Charolais and industry visits, tourism and cultural understanding, with an AGM scheduled somewhere during the event. There will be one presentation by the host country giving an overview of the beef industry and Charolais’ role in it. The goals of the World Congress are to:

1. Showcase the host country’s Charolais to the International community

2. Provide all members of CCI associations with a value adding global network

3. Increase the awareness of Charolais in the world

4. Offer a framework for personal development of CCI members and visitors

5. Offer international visitors a snapshot of the host country

2. Technical Conference

The Technical Conference is held in odd numbered years and historically has been a meeting of two voting delegates from each CCI Association. In more recent years, the host country has opened the Conference to all who were interested. The goals of the Technical Conference are similar to the goals of the World Congress with more emphasis on international collaboration advancing Charolais performance recording, marketing and global impact. The CCI body selects a topic to be featured at each Technical Conference and attending countries are invited to make a presentation highlighting the topic in their region.

The Annual General Meeting of CCI is held during the World events and each financial country attending is entitled two voting delegates, but the meeting is open to all who wish to attend. The next host country is given the opportunity to make an invitational presentation on their upcoming event at the current event.

In 2016 Candace By, Canada took on the International Secretary role and a new website was established. This site is a tremendous resource for member organisation contact details and a history of global Charolais events. At the Technical meeting in Mexico in 2017 a formal Breed Development committee was established with Ben Harman (UK) as inaugural Chairperson. With online technology quarterly Zoom meetings for both the CCI delegates and Breed Development committee have been held. These quarterly meetings have been instrumental in the organisation’s activity and development. The Charbray breed was formally recognised in 2017 in the organisation.

Also at the 2017 Annual General Meeting delegates voted to implement a Youth Program. Youth from various countries have travelled outside their borders in the past, but it was felt youth would benefit from meeting at a common location in the world annually for leadership and educational opportunities. Canada hosted the inaugural Youth event in 2018. Since then youth events have been hosted by Ireland, Canada (2), United States of America, and Australia. This program has been highly successful and attendees report favourably on their opportunities.

The restrictions imposed by the Covid outbreak in 2020 led to international shows online hosted by CCI. These events in 2021 and 2024 continued global cooperation when travel was not possible.

Charolais Charbray International has been very successful in achieving the objectives of the organisation and embodies a high level of mutual respect and cooperation of Charolais and Charbray members across the globe.

The objects of the organization is to:

a. exchange the results of mutual experiences in the field of all breeding problems

b. harmonize operating methods in the field of selection

c. promote the exchange of breeding animals

d. co-operate with organizations for research in all countries

e. centralize reciprocal information and spread it

f. study and promote the Charolais & Charbray breeds

g. generally represent the interests of the Charolais and Charbray breeds throughout the world.

Success in the prestigious Hordern Trophy capped off a great Charolais exhibition at the Sydney Royal Show. The Hordern trophy is the interbreed competition for the Pair of grand champions. Charolais won the inaugural trophy and now have 12 wins from 46 years of awards. Congratulations to Caloona Park and Venturon for their success. The award is judged by a panel of three with one judge Jason Catts, Futurity Pastoral commenting “the Charolais entry had great carcase attributes and an ability to offer livestock of any age to fit into a number of markets.” Meat and Livestock Australia, Managing Director Michael Crowley, another judge said “the judges were aligned in their goals and selected a team that was moderate, highly productive, and had the right balance between yield quality and softness.”

Judge for the breed classes was Mr Peter Cook, principal of the Barana Simmental and Angus studs at Coolah in New South Wales. Barana Simmentals has been an industry leader for many years in the Simmental world. Mr Cook told the crowd he was looking for cattle that were easy keeping, have a bit of performance on a medium to larger frame.

Most successful exhibitors, Venturon Livestock had a great day starting in the Heifer class 9 to 12 months.

In a class of ten entries they placed first through to fourth. Class winner Venturon Naughty But Nice W90 (P) was a daughter of Agribition and Denver winner SVY Mayfield 30H (P). This heifer from his first drop of Australian calves was a daughter of Venturon donor and highly successful show cow Venturon Naughty But Nice (P). This female has bred exceptionally well and has 37 progeny registered.

Peter Cook described this heifer as standing out, very free moving with good head carriage, neck extension and teat placement. Later in judging he selected this baby heifer as his junior champion female. Second and third placegetters in this class, Venturon Starstruck W98 (P) and Venturon Starstruck W82 (P) were also daughters of Mayfield.

Tallimba Lilly 2nd (P) shown by Luke and Leigha Gardner won the 12 to 14 months class. A daughter of Palgrove Raffa R1558E (P), this heifer appealed to the judge for her head and strong muzzle, length of body and freedom of movement. The judge also appreciated her thickness from behind, and teat placement. Second in this class was Golden Rose Charolais entry, Kenmere Leisel W19E (P) sired by LT Combat 2591 (P). This was another strong Charolais class with ten entries.

Heralding a return to royal show rings after a long hiatus, the Noller family from Gunnadoo Charolais, Toowoomba, Queensland won the Heifer 14 to 16 months with Gunnadoo Hero V55E (P). A heifer that exhibited great depth in the flank, tracked well, was a big free moving female with plenty of depth. Tracing back to the well known Gunnadoo Hero family this heifer was sired by Palgrove Revenue Raiser R891E (P). Brendan and Marnie Schiewe also from Queensland placed second in this class with a daughter of Brendale herd sire, Mount William Suregrip (P)(R/F).

The Walton family had success in two junior heifer classes, 16 to 18 months and 19 to 20 months. Macquarie Vale Miss Visionary (P) sired by Macquarie Vale Showstopper 1 (P) won the younger class with Macquarie Vale Valentina (P) sired by Rosedale Phillip (P) taking the honours in the older class. Both large frame heifers, they were very similar in type. Caloona Park placed second in the 16 to 18 months and Macquarie Vale had the second in the 19 to 20 class.

Winning the class 18 to 19 months and reserve junior champion heifer was Venturon Gayle V215 (P) for the Thompson family. This gave Venturon both junior champions in a very strong junior heifer line up. Gayle V215 is sired by Venturon Showbiz 161S (P), a trait leader for 400 day weight on BREEDPLAN.

Her dam, Venturon Gayle is the dam of Venturon Naughty But Nice, the mother of the junior champion heifer. Peter Cook appreciated this heifers’ style, adding “she certainly is a worthy winner, she has depth of barrel and capacity, great angles to her shoulders and back legs”. Second in this class was a daughter of the $265,000 Moongool Revolution sire, 4 Ways Mrs Queenie V77E (P)(R/F) for the Whitechurch Family. The Walton family continued their success with a third class win in the Senior female 20 to 24 months. Macquarie Vale Vogue (P) sired by Rosedale Phillip (P) took the honours over Charnelle Emma 8 (P) shown by Graham and Katrina Blanch from Queensland.

Venturon Mellcat U213 (P) sired by HJR Holy Water 55H (P) won the Female 30 to 36 months. Six females paraded in this class with the winner appealing to Mr Cook for her length and depth. He commented “she ticked his boxes, she was very smooth up front and doing an outstanding job on her calf”. This cow won her class as a heifer at Sydney in 2025. Second in the class was a partnership of Advance and Brendale Charolais studs with their entry Advance Avoca U9 (P). The judge commented on this female “she has plenty of depth of rib, plenty of barrel and travels well, she was very close to winning the class”. This class featured a line of very productive first calves demonstrating the maternal qualities within the breed.

In the senior class, Venturon Starstruck 172S (P) took the judges eye. From the highly regarded Starstruck family, 172S was sired by SCR Triumph 2135 (P). A full sister to this female was grand champion at Sydney in 2024. Mr Cook commented on his selection “the first-place cow, looking at her depth of body, big barrel, easy keeping sort of cow, very smooth with good muzzle and head carriage, good over the plates and doing a great job on her calf was a worthy winner.” In second place was Vanessa Selleck’s Winkel Park Penny (P) sired by SVY Trust 6H (P). This cow exhibited great performance, strength and bone and was doing a good job on her calf.

Mr Cook then used the two placegetters from the senior class as his senior and reserve respectively. Commenting on senior champion, Venturon Starstruck 172S (P) he said “she is the sort of cow I was looking for, she certainly has the substance, barrel with balance, get behind her she has a good tail setting”. Reserve Winkel Park Penny (P) was complimented for her plenty of substance with a smooth muscle pattern, with a great head carriage. In the champion female selection, Mr Cook went with the senior female Venturon Starstruck 172S (P). Adding to his previous commentary he admired the female’s tremendous skin and balance. Venturon then won the Two females not over 24 months with Golden Rose placing second and Gunnadoo third.

The bulls parading truly highlighted the capabilities of the breed to target a wide range of markets. Greg and Jenny Frizell, Wakefield Charolais won the under 12 months class with Wakefield Whizz Bang (P). At 10.5 months he weighed in at 544kg with an 112cm² EMA. Sired by Venturon Showbiz 161S (P), a flush brother to the Grand champion female, this calf certainly had performance. The judge commented “the class winner is a young calf, very safe, he has natural head carriage, his shoulder blades are well set in, he tracks very true and has good testicles”. The judge used this class winner as his Reserve Junior Champion bull.

Second in this class was Venturon McQueen W118 (P) with a 1.92kg daily weight gain. This calf was sired by Venturon Talladega T192 (P)(R/F) a previous Sydney Champion bull that sold for $50,000 to Bauhinia Park Charolais, Emerald, Queensland.

Myona Charolais paraded Myona Wildfire (P) for a win in the next class. Wildfire is a son of the consistent breeding sire, Wakefield Raise the Bar (P). Gunnadoo Wicked (P) entered by the Noller Family and sired by Palgrove Revenue Raiser (P) won the 12 to 14 months class. This bull was described by the judge as having scale and performance, good feet that allowed freedom of movement. Weighing in at 714kg for a daily weight gain of 1.61kg/ day he scanned 121cm² EMA.

Brendale Valiant (P)(R/F) exhibited by Brendan and Marnie Scheiwe placed second with the judge commenting on his early maturity pattern. This bull was sired by Mount William Suregrip (P)(R/F).

The Junior champion bull, Caloona Park Valiant (P) won the 16 to 18 months. Exhibitors, the Franco Family were acknowledged at the Charolais get together after judging for over 30 years membership of the Society. This bull was sired by Caloona Park Sonic Boom (P) and weighed 724kg at 18 months. Mr Cook admired this calf “this bull has a natural stance, stands square with balance, he is balanced from behind his chime with a good topline, smooth muscle pattern, softness and is nice and square from behind” It was announced after judging this bull was sold privately to Moongool and 4 Ways Charolais studs. Later in judging this bull was elevated to the grand champion bull of the show.

Second in the class was 4 Ways M6 Vegas (P) entered by the Whitechurch family. Another very mobile bull with good flex, tight in the sheath, soft with squareness from behind.

Venturon Vengeance V218 (P) won the 18 to 19 months for the Thompson Family from Boyup Brook in Western Australia. Sired by Venturon Start the Party (P), a bull that was also a previous Sydney grand champion and sold to Bauhinia Park Charolais. This calf had a massive EMA of 153cm2 and weighed 850kg. The judge commented he carried his muscle very well and was free moving. Vanessa Selleck’s Winkel Park Vice Squad (P) placed second weighing in at 852kg and scanning 145cm2 EMA. This bull is a grandson of Silverstream National N40 (P) and his dam has a double cross of CSS Sir Gridmaker 2W (P).

Brendale Charolais placed first and second in the 19 -20 months class. First was a Mount William Suregrip (P) (R/F) son Brendale Valley from a DSK bred cow. Peter Cook commented “two very good bulls, similar in type, softness and fat cover, very good feet with good pastern angles and both are tight in the sheath”.

Venturon Livestock continued their successful day winning the Bull 20 to 24 months and Senior champion bull. Their entry Venturon Verified V81 (P) was sired by Venturon Showbiz 161S (P).

On the dam side is the successful Mellcat family line that produced three class winners at the show. This entry weighed 1,002kg and scanned 150cm² EMA. The judge described his senior champion as a bull with length and depth, a high performance sire with softness and head carriage. This bull was also Junior and Grand champion male at Perth Royal in 2025.

Second in the class and Reserve Senior champion bull was Myona Victory Dance V6 (P) entered by Myona Charolais. This bull was similar in type to the champion and was sired by Wakefield Raise the Bar (P).

Venturon Livestock won the Sires Progeny class, Dams Progeny and Breeders Group, Caloona Park won the Pair of Bulls class. Fitting for these two successful exhibitors to team up for the interbreed sucess.

Sydney Steers

A lightweight Charolais steer has claimed the top cents a kilogram honours during the steer auction at the Sydney Royal this year. The 429-kilogram steer sired by Violet Hills Lexus was exhibited by Scott’s All Saints College, Bathurst, and bred by Warramunga Charolais, Peak Hill, had previously been sashed lightweight class winner before being knocked down for 1400 cents a kilogram to Makani, Blacktown. The steer, which had a five millimetre rib fat measurement, 9mm rump fat and a 93 square centimetre eye muscle area, equated to a dollars a head price of $5992.

This steer was included in the Stan Hill Trophy Charolais team for three purebred steers. Scotts’s All Saints exhibited all three steers.

Opportunity Abounds

At Beef Australia in 2024 the Charolais Society introduced a new format for the National Sale. Vendors had more flexibility with their offering and the sale was a tremendous success. Bulls topped at $55,000 for Moongool Trademark (P) and heifers average $18,800. The National Sale returns in August to coincide with the World Congress. We canvassed the membership for an elite offering and the catalogue will reflect that. Several lots have export potential which may appeal to the World Congress delegates. The sale will be held during the Gala dinner on Friday 7th August in the CBD for ticket holders and interfaced with Congress sponsors, Auctionsplus. This will be a super Charolais day with the Charolais Feature show at the EKKA starting off proceedings.

Early reports from the Brisbane Royal is that entry numbers for the Charolais Feature show are impressive. Several of the vendors will have cattle teams in the feature show. Elders Studstock will conduct the auction and we appreciate their support for this national concept.

Two sires headline the offering. The Price family who topped the last National at $55,000 have entered a top-quality sire from the Moongool program, Moongool Victory (P). This bull had success last year on the show circuit and was recently sashed Interbreed Champion male at Roma show. Sired by the $52,000 Moongool Pilgrim from a Silverstream Evolution daughter, this calf should attract attention. Chris Knox and Helen Alexander are offering DSK Velocity V28 (AI)(ET)(P). Sired by ANC Kind (P), the grand sire of the Moongool lot and from the interbreed champion female Venturon Gorgeous (P). Both these programs have bred many sires that have seen stud use over the years and these two may add to that record.

Palgrove Charolais have entered a semen lot with buyers choice from several of their top sires. The Palgrove herd needs no introduction and the opportunity to select from their semen inventory should not be missed. Warilla Charolais is offering a flush from Warilla Elegance V21 (AI)(ET)(P) sired by the $100,000 Palgrove Rockerfella R825E (P). Three flush sisters recently averaged $12,000. Embryo packages from Cassaglen and Charnelle herds are included in the genetic lots. Sires in these lots include Cassaglen Raptor (R/F)(P), Johnny (P)(Full French) and the Palgrove Rockerfella (P) sire.

The Cassaglen donor is “Scarlet Fire (R/F)” for those that like the red factor. The Charnelle dam is Milford Nardia (AI)(ET) (P), straight from the highly credentialled Silverstream herd in New Zealand. Both of these herds are renowned for disciplined breeding objectives.

Rangan and Elridge Charolais are opening the gates to a pick from nominated heifer drops. The Cook family at Rangan Charolais had a tremendous sale this autumn averaging $13,327 and is the home of the hugely successful Showgirl family. In this pick of W drop winter heifer calves will be many homozygous poll opportunities. Ross and Paula Warren from Elridge Charolais are offering a pick of their W heifer keeper pen. There will be 60 odd registered heifers to select from in a highly productive breeding program.

Venturon Livestock are offering a half share in Venturon Starstruck 199W (P). The calf off the recent Hordern Trophy winner, Venturon Starstruck 172S (AI)(ET)(P), this really is a genetic offering to look at. The Starstruck family are renowned for their maternal attributes. A great opportunity to get into the best from Venturon with her life ahead of her at only 11 months. Starstruck 199W (P) will be at Brisbane on display.

Also, on display will be the heifers from Ash-Lin, Wakefield and Veejay Downs. These herds are supporting the feature show and then giving the opportunity at their best heifers in the team. These breeders are well known and have been involved in the breed for a long period. Watch the heifer’s classes to work out your pick.

Bauhinia Park regularly feature in the top bull sale averages and Ryan and Rachel are digging deep to offer a pick of their top genetics. You choose between two heifers from the absolute top of the Bauhinia herd.

The common link in this offering is the quest of all these vendors to improve their herds. Sires have been chased to high prices, embryos imported and breeding pressure applied to select the best. The catalogue will be available early July and we encourage reaching out to vendors to discuss their offering. The opportunity to have picks from some of these programs may not present itself again for a long time, act now while you can.

A meeting was held to convene the Society with the inaugural President, Mr Anthony Hordern Jnr. Prior to this there were three Charolais organisations in Australia but no cattle. Western Australian breeders had formed a group in 1967, New South Wales (June 1968) and Victoria breeders both had organisations. The first Annual General Meeting of the Charolais Society of Australasia was held on the 23 March 1970.

1971

Charolais Society commences publication of a monthly Newsletter. This publication was also available to purchase at 42cents an edition.

7th January 1970

First Charolais sired calf born in Australia “Greenwarri Famechon 1 (aka Johnie) was born at the property of the Hyde Family, near Albany, Western Australia. The calf weighed 58lbs at birth and was sired by Sucre from a Poll Shorthorn cow. Sucre went on to sire over 9300 registered calves in Australia and his nose ring is hung on the office wall at the Charolais Society in Armidale.

March 1971

Willalooka Pastoral Co. South Australia held their first on property sale with Half blood Charolais heifers topping at $1,350. In Western Australian breeders host first sale of Australian bred calves including Greenwarri Famechon, Calf #1. This sale topped at $1,550 for a 1/2 bred heifer.

6th June 1970

Rick Pisaturo hosts the first auction sale of Charolais at Mandalong Park, St Marys NSW. The cattle on offer had been shipped from New Zealand. More than 1,000 people attended. Top price was $6,000 for Centrewood Babiller, a half bred female.

2nd October 1970

British Semen Exports reported that of an order of 200,000 doses of semen for Australia 150,000 was Charolais.

July 1971

The first purebred Charolais bull Mandalong Fabian was imported from New Zealand. Fabian at 4 months weighed 218kg. Fabian had a successful career siring 320 calves. Henry and Rebecca Pisaturo are pictured with Fabian, front page news in 1971.

A Historic Overview of Australian Charolais

Early 1970

Charolais cross cattle commence their enviable record in carcase and steer competitions in the early 1970s. In January 1974 at the statewide SA Beef Carcase Competition Charolais steers set a record score for the time. The three carcases beat the old record by 17 points recording 240 points for the pen.

The Charolais Society of Australia records outstanding membership growth with over 1,000 members in the first three years.

At the Third Australian Charolais sale a full French bull calf and purebred unjoined heifer were offered for sale. The bull calf, Centrewood Gabier sold for $21,000 at seven months of age (pic above) and the heifer Craigmore Gervaise topped the females at $22,000.

The first showing of Charolais at a Royal Show. Summer Glory exhibited by Charolais Breeders of Australia won Supreme Exhibit. Champion bull was Sundowner Ranches Giant exhibited by Tallagalla Charolais stud, Queensland. Sundowner Ranches Giant was the inaugural Champion Charolais bull at Brisbane Royal in 1973 and 1974.

The first Australian purebred Charolais calf produced by Embryo Transfer was born on the 9th January 1974. Amberley Jacques was 86 pounds at birth.

The first Australian bred purebred heifer was bred by Bill Wignell, Oorama stud Western Australia. The heifer Oorama Marie (WN8 M50D) was sired by Emir De The.

Founding breeder and Life Member Mr Rick Pisaturo offered semen from White Valley Hamish, a bull he had great regard for. At 32 months he weighed 1190kg. Hamish won Grand champion Charolais bull at Sydney Royal 1974 and sired over 1000 registered calves. Semen was exported to North America with this being the first Australian export to North America of Charolais semen. In Canada Hamish topped the World Conception to Consumer Calving Progeny test program. Hamish semen was also exported to Russia, Mexico and New Zealand.

1978

Mr and Mrs John Sullivan of Riverglen Pastoral Co at Condamine won the Champion Carcase at the 1977 Brisbane Royal. This was the third year in a row. John Sullivan was awarded a Life membership of the Charolais Society and established an enviable record in carcase competitions, which continues today with his sons furthering the success.

Western Australian breeders open Charolais House opposite the judging ring at Perth Royal show, a great area for breeders to congregate and promote the breed. Premier of Western Australia Sir Charles Court performed the opening.

1979

The Charolais Society purchased their first office at Portman Place, North Sydney adjacent to the Harbour Bridge for $90,000. The office space was initially leased as the Society was contracted to their CBD lease premises. The society also transferred its computer record of the herdbook to the Agricultural Business Research Institute [ABRI] at Armidale.

1985

Palgrove Charolais host their first sale, 16th September 1985, bulls sold to $5200 and females to $4200. Palgrove continue with their annual sale at the same time today.

August 1979

Barry and Pat Conroy achieved the second consecutive grand champion steer and carcase championship. The Conroy family went on to record great success in commercial competitions.

Charolais win the Inaugural Hordern Trophy presented at Sydney Royal. Mandalong Investments exhibited Mandalong Lad and Mandalong Jassica to win the inaugural trophy presented by the Hordern Family. Brisbane Champion of Champions was won

and Palgrove Elegance 13 (P) exhibited by Palgrove Charolais. Charolais went on to win 15 of the first 18 Champion of champions and have won the last two years of this award.

Mr Rick Pisaturo, Mandalong Charolais announced syndication of Mandalong Chock (P) for $165,000. The new owners then negotiated a sale of a quarter share semen rights for $US125,000. The Australian syndicate comprised MR & Mrs S Cluning, Woodlands Charolais, World Wide Charolais, Jaiphil Charolais and Gray Charolais. This price was the Australasian All Breeds Record price.

Australia hosts the World Charolais Congress for the first time. Delegates from around the world travelled from Victoria to Queensland with a Feature show at Sydney Royal. Cattle were exhibited from across Australia to the international delegates.

Charolais dominated the Interbreed awards with 2UP Vegemite Kid Interbreed Champion Bull, Palgrove Estella 19 Interbreed Champion

Female and Palgrove winning Interbreed Breedes Group. Ayr Charolais exhibited he Grand Champion Led Steer, the breed won he Tug of War competition and then the breed won the Grand and Reserve champion led steer Carcase awards. These results followed on from the breed winning the Hordern Trophy for Interbreed pair at Sydney Royal. The breed also won Interbreeds at Adelaide and Perth Royal later in the year.

January 1997

The Dunlop Family exported live 2UP Peugeot (P) to the United States of America. On his sire pedigree Peugeot traces back to the Dunlop Families original first cross females bred by Sucre back in 1970. 2UP Peugeot’s 1st drop of bull calves sold averaged $AUS6,200 in the USA.

1998

Executive Vice President of the American International Charolais Association Joe Garrett and his wife Carolynne donated funding to establish the “Garrett Youth Scholarship” to provide educational scholarships for Charolais Youth. This initial funding was added to by Australian members and has provided many Charolais youth members with scholarships over the years. l-r Carolynne, Joe and President Hamish Gosse.

2005

The Charolais Society moved office in Armidale to a rented site in Beardy Street in the Armidale CBD. This office served as our base from 2005 - 2021.

May 1997 Beef Australia

Charolais again dominated the Interbreed with Palgrove Panache 55 Interbreed Champion Female, Gunnadoo Red Baron Interbreed Champion Bull and Palgrove won the Interbreed Breeders Group and Champion Led Steer. For the third time the Charolais breed won the Interbreed Tug of War competition.

2002

Palgrove Charolais sell Palgrove Valiant for the auction record price of $61,000 to Meribah Charolais. Valiant had been the Champion Charolais Bull at both Brisbane and Sydney Royal shows.

2003

Charolais register more calves in the year than any other breed in the European breed sector. The breed has maintained this position since with Charolais registration accounting for 43% or Euro regs in 2019.

2005

Palgrove Charolais sold a cow and calf for $64,000 at auction. The cow Palgrove Dream Girl 7 sold for $32,000 to B O’Leary followed by her calf Dream Girl 16 auctioned immediately after for $32,000 to David Jefferis and Dianne Priddle.

2008

Palgrove sells Palgrove Maxine 43 (P) for $70,000 to Greg & Sue Clyde-Smith, Ballyvolane Stud. This record remains today for a Charolais female at auction. Australian Charolais Registrations top 10,000 annually for the first time. Australian Charolais host the International Technical Conference in conjunction with Beef Australia. The Special Sister Heifer Sale raised $9000 for Careflight

Joan Vickers released her history of the Charolais breed highlighting the first 40 years. Joan researched and published the history of the breed in Australia including stud profiles.

2010 - 2015

The Charolais Society of Australia began a Beef Information Nucleus Research program in conjunction with MLA. The project had a southern and northern breeding project comprising some 1200 progeny. The results of the BIN project were analysed and included into the Charolais BREEDPLAN analysis. This project concluded in 2015.

2015

Beef Australia 2015 Bruce and Gaye Campbell win the ANZ National Beef Carcase Competition with Charolais sired calves. The Campbell Family repeated this win at Beef Australia 2018

Heidi Nicholls and Sarah Nesbitt represent Australian Charolais Youth as ambassadors at the International Charolais Youth event hosted by Canadian Charolais. Charolais sires sold at auction in the year 2016 gross more than $10 million, this increased to $11 million plus in 2017 with 1,672 sires averaging $6,648. Moongool Lunar Rise sets a new Charolais auction record selling for $83,000 to 4 Ways Charolais stud, Inverell NSW.

Australian Charolais celebrate 50 years of Australian Charolais. Unfortunately due to Covid 19 the World Congress to celebrate this milestone was cancelled.

The north eastern states of Australia, a significant market for Charolais, emerge from a horrendous multi year drought and demand for Charolais sires erupts. Gross $ value rises from $7,379,100 in 2019 to $12,888,874 in 2020. In 2025 this rose to $21,107,479 as Charolais consoldidate their position as the preferred European breed for crossbreeding.

After many years of renting the Society purchases an office in Dangar Street, Armidale. Located in a great central location, this site has proven to met all our administration requirements.

The summary of our past 50 years has not included every interbreed, carcase champion, feedlot trial success due to the extensive list of achievements the breed has amassed over the years. For example, the Hordern Trophy has been won by Charolais breeders eleven times but we have only shown the first and latest victory. Charolais breeders of Australia have also provided the opportunity for commercial cattle breeders to increase their productivity with the infusion of Charolais genetics, a true measure of success.

Charolais sires sold at auction in the year gross $24.93 million, with 1,823 sires averaging $13,680. Moongool Revolution (P) sets a new Australian Charolais auction record selling for $265,000 to 4 Ways Charolais stud, Inverell NSW.

2025

The Queensland Feedlot and Carcase trial has over 400 head of Charolais and Charolais cross entries evaluated. This entry, brings the total number of cattle evaluated to over 1,200 over five years with another great entry currently on trial. Validating Charolais performance in real world conditions.

BREEDPLAN Performance Evaluation System.

Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI)

The Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI), situated in Armidale, NSW has provided database and performance evaluation services to Australian Charolais for many years. ABRI stands tall as a distinguished leader in the realm of agribusiness, offering ground breaking products, services, and technical advancements with a global footprint. With a rich history spanning over five decades, the ABRI team specialises in catering to the needs of both domestic and international livestock industries.

Established in July 1970, ABRI traces its roots to the visionary leadership of its late founder, Dr. Arthur Rickards OAM, and his colleagues at the University of New England (UNE). Initially conceived as a technology transfer unit within UNE, ABRI’s inception marked a bold leap forward in advancing agricultural innovation. Dr. Rickards vision for ABRI was to establish a national agribusiness service to facilitate a connection between the technological advancements being developed by UNE and the technology being used within the agricultural and rural industries. Over five decades later, ABRI stands as a global leader in agricultural software solutions, thanks to Dr Rickards ambitious mission.

A pivotal moment came in 1985 with the development of BREEDPLAN, an advanced genetic evaluation system for beef cattle, in collaboration with UNE’s Animal Genetics Breeding Unit (AGBU). Supported by Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), BREEDPLAN has evolved into the cornerstone of genetic evaluation, serving 40 beef cattle breeds and over 14 million animals across 14 countries. Additionally, ABRI offers a diverse range of software solutions for other livestock sectors, including dairy cattle, sheep, goats, and horses.

BREEDPLAN

BREEDPLAN is a modern genetic evaluation system for beef cattle breeders. It is based in Australia, and is provided to both Australian and international clients of the Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI) and so represents the most widely used genetic evaluation service for beef cattle internationally. BREEDPLAN offers bull breeders the potential to accelerate genetic progress in their herds, and to provide objective information on stock they sell to commercial breeders.

Over 60 separate BREEDPLAN evaluations have been developed, representing over 14 million animals, almost 40 beef cattle breeds and at least 100 breed associations distributed across 14 countries.

BREEDPLAN uses an advanced genetic evaluation system (based on Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) technology) to produce Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) of recorded cattle for a range of important production traits (e.g. weight, carcase, fertility).

Included in the calculation of EBVs are the animal’s own performance, the performance of known relatives, the heritability of each trait and the relationship between the different traits i.e. a world class genetic evaluation model, combining all traits in one analysis.

Many breeds of beef cattle in Australia use BREEDPLAN. For most, the BREEDPLAN genetic evaluation system has been integrated with the respective breed association’s pedigree system. Substantial genetic improvement for traits of commercial importance have been demonstrated. The BREEDPLAN technology is kept at the leading edge by continuous research.

The BREEDPLAN software has been developed by the Animal Genetics & Breeding Unit (AGBU), which is a joint venture of the University of New England (UNE) and NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI), with support from Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA). The BREEDPLAN technology is marketed by the Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI).

Genetic databases for particular breeds have been merged since the late 1990s to conduct international genetic evaluations. The rationale for this is simple - the larger the population of cattle being evaluated the higher the chance of finding elite genetic material which can then be rapidly disseminated using modern artificial breeding techniques. This will improve the competitiveness of beef production in all co-operating countries.

TRANS TASMAN CHAROLAIS ANALYSIS

The Charolais Society of Australia and the Charolais Breeders New Zealand conduct a joint BREEDPLAN analysis. The joint performance evaluation is updated monthly and the results are directly comparable between the two countries.

The Charolais Society of Australia (CSA) and Charolais Breeders New Zealand (CBNZ) incorporated genomic (DNA) into their joint BREEDPLAN genetic evaluation, using a method known as Single-Step. This major upgrade was implemented in the January 2024 Charolais BREEDPLAN evaluation. In the April 2026 analysis 25,985 genomic profiles were included in the evaluation.

Cooperating in the Trans Tasman analysis adds significant data to the evaluation for both countries. In the April 2026 evaluation 117,207 birthweights were analysed from Australia and 43,219 birthweights from New Zealand. This gives a total birthweight dataset of 160,426 giving more value to the analysis.

Estimated Breeding Values (EBV)

An EBV (Estimated Breeding Value) is defined as an estimate of the animals own genetic value for a particular trait.

An EPD (Expected Progeny Differences) is defined as the genetic merit of an animal’s progeny. As the parent contributes on average 50% of its genes to its progeny, an EPD is theoretically half an EBV (ie; 0.5 * EBV=EPD). However, whilst this is theoretically true, a number of other factors means that this is not always straight forward when making comparisons between EPD’s and EBV’s.

9. Data Quality Checks. BREEDPLAN has several data quality checks that are routinely carried out to ensure the accuracy of the data that enters the genetic evaluation.

10. Multi-Trait Analysis. BREEDPLAN analyses all quantitative traits in a single analysis to utilise all known genetic relationships between traits, remove selection bias and ensure that animals are compared consistently for all traits.

BREEDPLAN Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) provide estimates of the genetic merit of an animal for a range of economically important traits. BREEDPLAN EBVs allow beef producers to assess and compare the genetic merit of animals. EBVs are expressed as the difference between an individual animal’s genetics and the genetic base (historic genetic level of the population) to which the animal is compared. Furthermore, each EBV is reported in the units in which the measurements are taken (e.g. Weight EBVs are reported in kilograms). On average, half of this difference will be passed on to the animal’s progeny (the other half will come from the dam). Please note that as each BREEDPLAN analysis has its own unique genetic base, only EBVs produced in the same BREEDPLAN analysis can be directly compared.

SELECTION INDEXES

BREEDPLAN recommends using selection indexes (where available) as part of a selection strategy which also includes other selection tools (e.g. EBVs and visual assessment). By initially ranking animals using an appropriate selection index, beef producers ensure balanced selection for traits important to their production system. The BREEDPLAN best practice guide to animal selection is to:

1. Identify the selection index of most relevance to you.

2. Rank animals using the chosen selection index.

3. Consider the individual BREEDPLAN EBVs of importance.

4. Consider other traits of importance.

The Charolais Society of Australia currently reports two different selection indexes. These are the:

Northern Maternal Index (NMI)

Domestic Terminal Index (DTI)

Each selection index is reported in units of net profitability per cow mated ($) for the production system/market scenario they describe. Selection indexes account for both sides of the profit equation (costs as well as income), and also reflect the relative short and long term profit associated with possible selection decisions. For example, short term profit can be generated by a bull through the sale of his progeny, and the longer term profit generated by his daughters in a self-replacing cow herd. Each of the selection indexes are focused on efficient beef production while also targeting the following specifications:

Northern Maternal Index [NMI]- Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for a typical commercial herd where Charolais bulls are joined with Bos indicus cows in Northern Australia targeting the grass fed Jap Ox market. Selected heifers are retained for breeding and so maternal traits are of importance. Steers target 650 kg live weight (360 kg HSCW and 12 mm P8 fat depth) and heifers 630 kg (340 kg HSCW and 14 mm P8 fat depth), at 26 months of age. In response to industry feedback; positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability.

Northern Maternal Index - Profit Drivers

Maternal Index -EBV Weightings

Domestic Terminal Index [DTI] - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for a typical commercial herd where Charolais bulls are joined with a British breed cow base (e.g. Angus) targeting the domestic trade. This index assumes all progeny will be marketed with steers finished in the feedlot for 90 days, and weighing 450 kg (250 kg HSCW and 7 mm P8 fat depth) when marketed at 12 months. Heifers will be in the feedlot for 75 days, and weigh 430 kg (230 kg HSCW and 9 mm P8 fat depth) at 12 months. In response to industry feedback, positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability.

Australian Charolais breeders and commercial breeders are fortunate to have access to such a highly regarded performance evaluation as BREEDPLAN. Over many years we have seen traits of importance like calving ease, gestation length and finishing ability improve through careful selection. The incorporation of genomic data in the Singlestep analysis model has added value to the evaluation and will assist in developing new traits for inclusion in the analysis.

It should be noted that BREEDPLAN is also used by British and Hungarian Charolais although they are run as separate analysis. As we move through another exciting year for Charolais Youth Australia, I continue to be incredibly proud of the passion, dedication, and enthusiasm shown by our members, supporters, and committee.

A major focus for our Youth Committee at present is the planning and development of our 2027 Youth Event. Behind the scenes, an enormous amount of work has already taken place, and I would like to sincerely acknowledge the hard work and commitment of the committee members who have volunteered countless hours to ensure this year’s event ran smoothly, while also laying the foundations for our next event to become one of the best yet. Their energy, ideas, and determination are a credit to the future of our breed and our youth program.

These events do not happen without the support of our wider Charolais community, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who continues to back our youth initiatives. The opportunities these events create for young people both within the cattle industry and personally are truly invaluable.

In preparation for the 2027 event, we are currently working towards our fundraising auction to be held on 12th August 2026 in conjunction with the Ekka. This auction will play an important role in helping us deliver an outstanding event for our youth participants, and we are now seeking donations and support from members and industry friends. Any donations whether livestock, genetics, goods, services, or sponsorship would be greatly appreciated and will go a long way in supporting the next generation of Charolais enthusiasts. We encourage anyone willing to contribute to please reach out to any of the committee members.

Amy Whitechurch, a member of the youth committee and youth Secretary since the committee was revamped has graduated to Full membership. Amy has been a great contributor to the youth committee and instrumental with the organisation of the last two youth events. Our Charolais International youth delegate in 2025, Amy bought back several ideas from her Canadian trip that elevated Char Trek. The Charolais Society extends their sincere appreciation to Amy for her contribution to the development of the youth membership. Amy now has more time to focus on her Dynamite Charolais herd and families 4 Ways Charolais.

International Youth

Charolais Charbray International youth program will be hosted by American International Charolais Association in 2027. This program offers a great opportunity for our international Charolais youth to develop networks and new skills whilst discovering different production systems. Once we have details from the USA we will seek applications from interested youth to participate. There is a minimum age as the award features international travel. To date our delegates, Heidi Nicholls, Sarah Nesbitt, Amanda Cavenagh and Amy Whitechurch have been very complimentary about the experience. Australia hosted the 2024 program and the interactions between our youth and the international delegates have resulted in strong networks.

Building the Future

Char Trek 2026 was an outstanding success and built on the strong foundation of prior Charolais youth events. Seventy-two Charolais youth from four states took the opportunity to add skills to their toolkit,

expand their network and evaluate new ideas.

Char Trek 2026 saw an extended time format with participants arriving Thursday and departing Sunday. The extra time afforded an increase in lecture time and more time with their cattle for the participants. Toowoomba’s great facilities allowed many of the educational and judging events to be undercover, which was appreciated by all. Our Charolais youth committee had put the hard yards in early to ensure arrival and setup went smoothly. Many hands made light work and in a fast time all entrants were registered and attending the induction session.

Straight after induction, the competitors split into six assigned groups and team bonding activities commenced. It is rewarding to see older competitors step up and assist the younger attendees participate and enjoy the experience. After some very competitive activities the water slides came out and some hidden talents were discovered. Sliding ability varied greatly but the participation efforts were gold medal standard.

The facilities at Toowoomba were first class and enabled many education sessions to be undertaken undercover. A large number of members and parents took on leadership roles, either group leaders, educators, assistants and so much more. We are indebted to each and every one of these people for their contribution.

Char Trek 2026 saw the introduction of “Little Chars”, a new age group for competitors five to seven years old. Each entrant received a blow-up cow about 50cm high and these were used for washing and bed maintenance sessions. Nigel and Casey Wieck were group leaders of this section and did a tremendous job.

Little Chars concluded after lunch each day however the entrants kept working with their animal making perfect beds and establishing great networks amongst themselves. This section proved to be very popular and gave the younger members a taste of youth events.

Charolais youth events have a strong focus on education and the program was designed to cover essential fundamentals like animal evaluation, parading, and gear with new opportunities. A big hit with entrants (and a few parents) was Gary Noller and his drone demonstration. Gary had his large drone set up for spraying and outlined the applications it could be used for and gave a demonstration of the accuracy that could be achieved.

With the younger sections such as the Pee Wees (8-10) and juniors (11-12) there is more focus on fundamentals of cattle production and management. As the age increases more variation enters the program. For example, senior competitors journeyed to Beef City feedlot and took in animal feeding techniques and nutrition. Some of our lecturers included Janine Lau on MSA grading and carcase attributes and grading, Dr Marnie Schiewe and Dr Jemma Postle on animal reproduction and animal health. Gemma and Ben Noller discussed marketing, Kelly Skillington lead sessions on public speaking along with many other contributors. An important note is that many of our educational lecturers were once participants at Charolais youth events in the past. This really puts a value on these events to the society and industry as a whole. For the first time, we had Charolais fourth generation family participation with the Noller children.

The education program for these events are constantly evolving to cater for new entrants as well as more seasoned attendees. Repetition is a great way to take on topics like structure and animal evaluation and each lecturer in these subjects brings a new perspective to the discussion.

The overjudge for the Junior judging competition is always our lecturer on structure and this year’s Scott Freeman had this task. Scott is well known to the Charolais breed after many years with the family Baroola Charolais herd at Roma and now with the Brendale herd. Every competitor competes in junior judging and judges two classes, writes reasons down for placements and talks on a class. Giving entrants self confidence in public speaking is a huge takeaway from these events. The full results of the junior judging section are on the next page.

Paige Brown took out Champion judge this year capping a great show for her. Paige also won the heifer, Moongool Ms W8E (P) donated by the Price family for the Most Potential Charolais Breeder, giving her own herd a massive boost. Paige is the granddaughter of Kel and Lesley Bridges who have been huge supporters of Charolais youth and the breed over many, many years. This award saw fourteen entrants entering a written application for the heifer. Entrants also had a personal interview.

Two scholarships were awarded to the Roma Young Beef Leaders event later in the year with Jaime Vosper and Sophie Inder to represent Charolais youth at this event.

Martin Rowlands, KBV Simmentals judged the parading section and gave clear commentary on his expectations and decisions. Caylee Edwards from Denman NSW won the senior and grand champion parader in a strongly contested division. Kiera Campagnola from South Australia won the Intermediate section and Emmet Skillington won the Pee Wee section. In the junior division, Jack Postle, Dalby won the Champion parader, the same title his father, Andrew Postle won at Dubbo back in 1993 at the first Charolais youth stampede. Marty was eased into the judging with the Little Chars parading their animals in a great start to the final day.

A cohort of judges kept an eye on all competitors during the event and these results were tabled into the herdsperson awards. Points were awarded for attention, cooperation, participation, manners and overall effort. Sharnie Franco was announced as grand champion Herdsperson at the awards ceremony after winning the senior section.

Another new section for our event was an Arts and Photography section which attracted some great exhibits. Tai Hamilton, Tamworth NSW took out the Artwork section with an amazing painting and Caylee Edwards exhibited the Grand champion photograph.

A mock auction conducted by Elders Studstock consultant, Andrew Meara was hugely successful. Each team had different specifications and budgets and bidding was fierce. New breed records would have been set if this was a real auction and the youth enjoyed working out what bulls on offer suited their specifications.

The youth committee extend a huge shout out to all the sponsors and contributors to the Charolais youth auction last August that generated the funds to underwrite this event. Entrant fees were kept to a minimum due to the support of the sponsors and auctions participants. Watch your news feed for information on this year’s event.

Our Charolais youth committee did a great job with the organisation of this event and with the assistance of many more mature helpers delivered a strong educational event. Many new friendships were formed with entrants from a wide geographical distribution. A good thing with the Charolais event is that everybody has the chance to meet everybody with all cattle stalled in one shed.

Planning is well underway for the 2027 event and the goal is always to improve. Event dates and location will be advised to members once set.

When we evaluate the contribution of Charolais youth stampede attendees from the 1990’s into this year’s event, it is self evident on the value of these events. Enabling our Charolais youth with skills now, gives the breed a solid base to step forward for many years to come with confidence. Let’s continue to build the future!

Brisbane Royal Show

Thanks to the generosity of some of our committee members, the Region had an information and entertainment centre at this year’s Brisbane Royal show and it was well patronised, particularly on judging day. The showing was small, but very well presented – four bulls and three heifers being judged by Mr. Richard White Of ‘Bald Blair’, Guyra. Tallagalla Charolais Stud’s Tallagalla Jupiter was awarded Senior and Grand Champion Bull of Queensland and Tarata Pty. Ltd., showing for the first time, exhibited the Champion Female, Wai-Tara Park Laonie, whom the judge described as one of the best females he had seen.

Once again, we are proud to announce that Charolais were the Carcass Champions, repeating the 1975 performance, thanks once more to John Sullivan of Riverglen Pastoral Co. who took first and third placings in the Export Trade Class and second in the class suitable for Local Trade, in addition to Champion Carcass.

Unfortunately, we are relying on a comparatively small number of members for our successes in the Fat Cattle Classes and for the exhibition of cattle which do credit to the breed in the Stud Classes. These exhibitors are giving most generously of their time and money and need a little help from other members who have cattle suitable for entry in stud and/or fat cattle classes.

Riverglen Tops Carcase

The champion carcase at Brisbane Royal Show was one of a Pen Of Three entered in Class 16. The three entries were all by Mandalong Fabian and is interesting to note that the winner was a second Cross. The next best steer was also from Riverglen and the sire was Sundowner Ranches Giant. The other sire featured was Sujet. All these steers were bred and exhibited by John Sullivan, Riverglen Charolais, Condamine, Queensland. Other successful exhibitor was lan Cameron, Boongalla, The Gums, Queensland. In a letter to the Editor, John says, ‘We didn’t have any chance in the Bone Out Competition as ‘the M.G. entries were given a premium over the Charolais steers into the boning room. In the case of the Cameron steers this was up to six cents per pound. M.G.’s filled the first four places – we were Fifth and Seventh. lan Cameron was Sixth. There was no need to have boned the carcasses to get the first five placings, once the price per pound was allocated’.

Best Maintained Breed

The Charolais breed was awarded “The Best Maintained Beef Breed” by the RAS judges at the Royal Melbourne Show. Veteran cattle entrepreneur, Mr. Charles young, Glen Parc, Mittagong NSW who judged the Charolais section, said the cattle were a magnificent bunch, much improved over previous shows both in Sydney and Melbourne.

The big classes of senior cattle attracted a large crowd. Mr. Young looked for what he termed Australian type Charolais, which would walk and do well under Australian conditions. The full French type could be too course and gross for Australian conditions.

The NSW base bull, Bushfield Julian owned by Gilmandyke Park stud was the Champion bull. He was also Junior and Grand Champion this year at Sydney and is a son of Apollon. He was 25 months old and weighed 943kg. DJ & WT Hayes, Tooboorac exhibited their imported New Zealand cow, Blythe Josephine by Tavy Edward, to take out the female championship.

Greenwarri Reaches Purity

Greenwarri has completed its seventh year successfully, and we thought it may be of interest. Norm and Ken Hyde, Greenwarri, 646 Willyung Road, King River Albany, Western Australia have successfully completed four generations of Charolais breeding, in the seventh year of their breeding up programme, with the birth of a purebred heifer, on August 17th. from their seven-eighths heifer Greenwarri Jeanne. She has been Called Greenwarri Minilya, and is a strong healthy calf from a natural paddock calving weighing 87 lbs. at birth. She was sired by Birchfield Apollon.

A short history of her breeding – in 1969 Norm and Ken Hyde inseminated base cows with semen from Sucre. These base cows were carefully selected from their ‘Coonana’ Poll Shorthorns and from Poll Hereford On January 7th, 1970, Greenwarri Famechon (Johnny) made headlines as the first Charolais to be born in Australia. In April that year Greenwarri Freda was born, and she is the great grand dam of Greenwarri Manilya. Freda was inseminated with semen from Salon and produced Greenwarri’s first three-quarter heifer, Greenwarri Hallee, in June 1972. Hallee, inturn, was inseminated with Charogal Ecossais semen, and she dropped the first seven-eighth heifer, Greenwarri Jeanne in June, 1974.

Greenwarri’s breeding up policy, to begin with quality and carefully chosen sires, has paid a handsome dividend with the birth of Greenwarri Manilya. Their aim is to breed a Charolais of quality suitable for Australian conditions and easy care management. They now look forward to the birth of a pure bred bull, as the next step in the breeding up programme.

Australian Charolais Idents

All Australian Charolais calves born after the 1st July 2022 have an extra year reference in their identification number. This is illustrated below. The year letter will be replaced by a three digit code being the last two numerals of the year of birth and the applicable year letter. eg 2022 born animal will be 22T instead of T.

When registering calves members only need to use the year letter as in the past. The Society adds the yy reference when processing the calf registration. Animal tattoos will remain in the present format and only the year letter would need to be tattooed. The inclusion of the yy will only be required in society transactions.

We extend as huge shout out to Gary Noller and his Beef Cattle committee at the Brisbane Royal show. Hosting our upcoming Charolais Feature show at the EKKA has been a huge undertaking and these guys have had our backs 100%. The image above was taken in 2015 when Gary, a Charolais Society Honorary Life member was further recognised for his extended level of service to the Charolais Society board. It was fitting that a aerial sign writer fly past at exactly the right time to capture the effort Gary contributes.

The success of Charolais in Australia is a direct result of the contribution of many. As we head into a Charolais Feature in Queensland, it is fitting to remember two gentleman no longer with us but whom will be etched into our history forever, John Sullivan & Trevor Cottee, both Honorary Life Members and former Presidents of the Society.
