High Hedges Complaints

A Council will only consider a complaint if:

does not succeed then the complaint must be made in writing; submitted to the council in whose area the hedge is situated; be accompanied by the correct fee; and copied to the owner and any occupiers of the land on which the hedge is situated.

Before a complaint can be made, the owner of the affected property must take all reasonable steps to resolve matters by negotiation with the owner of the land on which the hedge is situated. If that

For legal advice on this subject or any other property related dispute, please contact Kyle Wyness, Associate at Spratt Endicott Solicitors on 01295 204135 or email kwyness@se-law.co.uk.

High hedges can block out light to houses and gardens and cause friction between neighbours. No common law right to reduce the height of a hedge growing on neighbouring land exists.

The introduction of the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003 (“ABA 2003”) gave local Councils the power to deal with complaints about high hedges that adversely affect the reasonable enjoyment of residential property. 1. It is made by an owner of residential property; 2. It alleges that the owner’s reasonable enjoyment of their property is adversely affected by the height of the hedge; and 3. The hedge is situated on land owned by another person.

If the Council decides to uphold the complaint it can issue a remedial notice which records their decision that the hedge adversely affects the complainant’s reasonable enjoyment of their property, specifies the action required to remedy that effect and sets the deadline for compliance.

Marie Curie is looking for a volunteer in Brackley!

Marie Curie is appealing for local volunteers to help manage the charity’s collection boxes in and around Brackley. The local Marie Curie fundraising team are seeking Collection Box Co-ordinators to help look after boxes that are on display in shops, newsagents, chemists, pubs and cafes’. The role involves looking after collection tins in the local community, counting and banking the monies and also to identify and approach new venues to see if they will take a collection box. The money raised from the boxes will help Marie Curie to provide vital care and support to people living with a terminal illness and their families, when they need it most. Whether you’re a seasoned fundraiser or a newcomer looking to get involved for the first time, the local Marie Curie fundraising office would love to hear from you. To become a Marie Curie Collection Box Co-ordinator you need to be aged 16 or over. For more information for how you can get involved, please contact Laura Foy on 01604 442316.

Do you want to extend or re-configure your home or embark on another exciting building project?

Here at GD Cooper Architectural Services we provide step by step guidance no matter how large or small your project is. For many of our clients it’s the first time that they’ve had any building work on their home so it’s essential to have a breakdown of the process and an understanding of timescales. We offer a free initial hour long consultation to understand our client’s wish list for their planned building project and gather other essential information; such as whether the existing building is listed or in a conservation area and find out key facts around drainage

16

and previous extensions if applicable. If you are thinking of starting a building project it’s important to start the process sooner rather than later as the process often takes much longer than people realise. After the initial visit we then conduct a survey and begin the design process which is very much a collaborative one to ensure the final design fulfils the client brief.

Once the design is confirmed the final drawings are prepared and the planning application is submitted. It takes approximately 10 weeks for a decision to be made by the Local Planning Authority. It is at this stage that detailed construction drawings are prepared and submitted to Building Control, these can be given to builders to gain quotes and agree a start date for your build.

If you’d like to book in your free consultation please give Gary or Louise a call on 01280 700333 or email us at gdcooperdesign@hotmail.co.uk.

Health & Beauty

When your older relatives could use a little help to make everyday living less of a challenge, choosing a trustworthy and reliable care provider can be a daunting task. Personal recommendations are a great place to start, and CQC accreditation is certainly a clear sign that you’re onto a winner – and ticking both of those boxes is Caroline Cares for You Ltd, the caring local company.

18

A caring approach with C

problems to continue living independently and happily in their own homes. Their aim is to offer the highest quality of care to clients – exactly what they’d want for their own family – what Caroline calls her ‘Mum test’. Caroline’s nursing background gives her vital insight into the range of difficulties many older people can face, when increasing age and frailty make everyday tasks tricky, so the company tailors care around improving each person’s quality of life and also preventing common health

problems, which can make our older years much less enjoyable. UTIs – or water infections, to you and me – are one of these common problems, which older people are more susceptible to getting. When you find it a challenge to get up and make a cup of tea, or mobilise to get to the loo, it’s easy to become dehydrated – which is one of the most common causes. The company has produced an advice leaflet, as part of their service in the local community, to help everyone look after their health – and if you feel you may need a little more care, talk to Caroline!

With Christmas Time Approaching With Christmas now approaching all too quickly and many of us watching the pennies even more closely this year, it’s more necessary than ever to cut costs and still have a fabulous time. By starting a few weeks ahead, there’s time to plan and plenty of ways to save: Buy one extra item with your shopping each week, and make your own Christmas hamper – cranberry sauce, crackers, a bottle or two – spread the cost over the next few weeks get together with plenty of friends and family for a huge Christmas dinner – share the cooking, everyone brings something, agree to only token presents and enjoy a family occasion, instead of big presents and each household cooking for themselves – small children will remember this long after toys would be outgrown or broken, and happy memories are priceless. Make your own – jam, chutney, fudge, cakes – the list is endless!

Decorate plain gift boxes, or use gingham and ribbon to make jars look pretty. For pennies, you can give something you have created, to be enjoyed over the festive season. look on selling sites, on social media sales groups, or even cards in shop windows – many items are just as good ‘nearly new’ and less than half the price. antiques and vintage items are valuable yet second (or third!) hand, so why should all presents have to come from a shop? give vouchers – special offer sites regularly have cut price pamper treatments, meals out, activity or spa days, for a fraction of the actual cost, so why not buy one of these for a friend – the present will be worth considerably more than you paid! get crafty! Old clothes can become patchwork cushions, a ball of wool can become a cosy scarf……there are so many online videos with step-by-step instructions, it’s possible to learn simply any skill!

SQUASH CLUB FINALE It was a great evening of squash entertainment at Manor Road on Monday 4th. October, with both the club championship and handicap finals taking place. This also coincided with the first and second teams making a 100% winning start in the Oxfordshire winter league. With four matches played team 1 are top of division 4 and team 2 are leading division 6, a tremendous performance from the squad recently strengthened with new arrivals to the town. In the handicap, new member Brendan Sanders played Colin Whitehead in a non-stop 20 minute test of endurance. Colin started with a 7 point advantage and Brendan had managed to pull level after about five minutes. The next ten minutes saw the lead change hands several times and just when you thought Colin’s fitness would see him through, Brendan slowed the game down with some tactical drops and lobs. This proved to be the turning point and Brendan pulled away in the last few minutes for a 52-42 victory.

In the club championship final another newcomer, Jason Burgon, was up against last year’s winner and three time finalist Tim Walton. Jason arrived at the club with a fine squash pedigree having played at county level in the north-east and representing Wales at over 35 level when he lived and worked there. The large crowd were entertained by a fine display of squash with many long and tiring rallies as the two vied for superiority. In the end, Jason’s experience proved to be decisive and he ran out the winner 9/3, 9/3, 9/5.

Bonfire

If you have pets, this time of year is certainly not their favourite time. Juggling the needs of your animals whilst still wanting to celebrate Bonfire Night isn’t easy, but I have a few top tips to make things go as smoothly as possible. For cats, make sure you can keep them indoors from dusk onwards – if you work late, keep them in all day at this worrying time of year – an extra litter tray and dish of dry complete food, along with a scratching post to spare your chairs and a bowl of fresh water, will ensure they don’t miss their forays outside for the few days they need to stay in. For dogs, rescued pets and those breeds that are most sensitive to noise will need the most TLC. Being there for your pet can help, but if you’re taking the

family to a fireworks display then leaving your dog in a familiar room with toys and their bed and putting the radio on to mask the sudden whistles and bangs will help. Make sure you’ve walked your dog before dark, as leaving a stressed pet with a full bladder won’t make anyone happy. If your dog gets in a real state, like my Border Collie, think ahead about the best way to protect them from themselves. Speak to your vet about methods to calm your pet, and look at the possibility of using a suitably sized puppy crate to keep them safe and prevent them harming themselves or your home, whilst the display is going on nearby.

GARDENING THIS MONTH

September and October have given us reasonably warm but changeable weather. However autumn will take a hold now with rain and wind to come. We should still take all opportunities to get out there and get stuck in, easily written while I sit in the warm office with a cup of tea!

Looking good! Autumn colours are really taking off at this time. Japanese maples are often grown for their brilliant display in the autumn. The leaves of the species Acer palmatum will give gorgeous tints of pinky reds to orange. The best colours will be on sheltered plants – conditions which also suit the many varieties the species has given rise to. Another fine tree for autumn colour is Liquidamber stryaciflua or “Sweet

Gum” (see pic left page). This medium size tree has characteristic three-lobed leaves that can turn rich purple and paler shades too. A great small tree which really doesn’t get too tall is Sargent’s Rowan, Sorbus sargentiana (see pic above) with its prolific red fruits and stunning autumn colour foliage. As a contrast to these larger plants, on a smaller scale the all year colour of Heucheras (see pic top right) give such great value. Plant in light shade or sun, the leaves will light up the garden, particularly if you can plant a few together.Jobs around the garden

Clearing leaves can be a chore unless you can rope the kids in to help. One lazy way is to use the lawnmower. A mulching mower can return smaller quantities to the lawn, or chop up the leaves when collecting, which will speed up composting on the heap. Mulch borders and newly planted areas with garden compost or well rotted manure. cont..

GARDENING THIS MONTH

Nature’s planting time November is often ideal for planting hardy subjects. While the soil is still warm, root will grow and support the plant better the following season. Bareroot plants, particularly roses, trees, native hedging, fruit bushes etc. are much cheaper than their containergrown equivalents in

the spring and will often establish better at this time.

5 successive wins!... After Brackley's perfect start to the season - 5 successive wins! a challenging run of games brought a series of draws and two first defeats. The first loss came away at Salford City - the club part-owned by the former Man Utd stars including Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs. Salford have completely re-built their stadium since Brackley's first visit last season and a quite wonderful venue it now is. The second defeat came at York City. BRACKLEY JUBILEE CHOIR - 40TH ANNIVERSARY

This 40th Anniversary year for the Brackley Jubilee Choir has been one of growth and success, looking back over its history, including some of the music sung during the inaugural concert repeated in the successful summer concert in July, 2017. The final concert of the year will take place on Saturday, 2 December, in St Peter’s Church, Brackley, beginning at 7.30. The appealing music the choir will sing consists of two favourite works within the choral repertoire:- Vivaldi’s Gloria and Haydn’s Nelson 34

Mass, both accompanied by the Cherwell Orchestra. The soloists are:- Emma Griffiths, soprano; Felicity Hope, alto; Philip Fine, tenor, and Theo Perry, bass – all of whom are known to the choir and Brackley audiences. The orchestra will also play Mozart’s Serenade in G, K525, known as Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. The conductor is Stuart Hubble, well known in Brackley music circles. Ticket price is £10 (free to 16 and under).
