SUMMER HOLIDAYS When it comes to the summer holidays, organisation is the key to successfully planning and packing for a trip. So once everything has been ticked off the shopping list, what next? Leading online luggage retailers, Sportsdirect.com, offers up some top tips for making the most of any type of suitcase, for any type of holiday. Save room with miniatures. People rarely need a full bottle of shower gel when travelling abroad for less than a week; save room in the case by substituting family-sized bottles for miniature versions which can be easily rolled up in socks, or packed tightly into a compartment. Roll instead of fold. Although the majority of UK holidaymakers prefer to fold their clothes, rolling allows for more items to be packed into even the smallest of cases, and also prevent some items from creasing too much. Remove bulky packaging. Shoeboxes can be sacrificed; packing shoes and toiletries separately rather than altogether in packaging will not only allow extra room for essentials, but smaller itemsor items which can be worn creased such as underwear and socks, can be stuffed into shoes and wrapped up around bottles (handy for providing extra packaging for perfume bottles or make up). Make use of hand luggage. Many of the major airlines such as Virgin Atlantic and British Airways allow up to six kgs of hand luggage to be taken aboard the cabin. To avoid any nasty charges at check-in, packing heavier items such as beach towels, books and hair brushes in hand luggage will free up the weight allowance and room in the main suitcase. Optimise suitcase compartments. Many suitcases come with extra zip compartments for security and protection. Fill these with toiletries, chargers and items which require immediate access upon arrival. This can prevent toiletry spillages on clothing items, as well as making space in...cont pg 8

Essentials * Passport * Visa * ID card * Airline ticket or Eticket * Reservation numbers: hotel and car rental * Money: both local and foreign currency * Credit cards * House keys Tip: Call your bank and let them know exactly where you're travelling to and the dates you'll be gone to avoid having your credit/debit card declined. Another Tip: Always save any samples you pick up at stores to take with you or buy travel size bottles and fill them with your favourite products. And to avoid unwanted leaks, place liquids in re-sealable plastic bags.

GD Cooper Architectural is uniquely able to offer an inclusive design solution for all. GD Cooper Architectural Services provide a design and planning service producing architectural drawings for planning applications, building control and for general renovations and home adaptions. I have been involved in the construction industry since leaving school in 1988, when I trained as a plumber. An accident at work in 2003 left me needing to use a wheelchair and my career had to change direction. A three year degree course in Architectural Technology has allowed me to utilize the wealth of experience built up over the years. This experience along with a first class degree and two other C.A.D qualifications enables me to approach a client’s project from both a practical and a technical perspective.
As a registered Smarter Planning Champion I will act as your planning agent ensuring all the correct information is included in your application and submit it digitally, saving time and money on printing. Whether it’s a full planning application or you would like a design developing within the new Permitted Development laws I can help. Many clients also find it very helpful to see a selection of different layout options ensuring the best use of the space they have. DRYCLEANING & LAUNDRY
Buckingham – Winslow
Specialist Dry-cleaning & Laundry Services
As well as the usual bumps and bruises, the summer brings some other ‘medical moments’. Here’s how to treat some of the most common: Bites and Stings These are usually more painful than harmful. For most bites, apply a cold compress and add bite/sting cream. If stung in mouth, give an ice cube to suck. Call an ambulance if there are breathing difficulties. Sunburn Get out of the sun. Calamine lotion will ease soreness and itching. Use an aftersun cream (aloe vera gel is great). Increase fluids to keep hydrated. For severe sunburn or if there are signs of heat exhaustion/dehydration see a GP. Heat rash Sponge with cool water and pat dry. Apply calamine lotion.

Moving home with your cat
During all the last minute arrangements you have to make when moving house it is just possible that your cat's welfare might not be top of your priority list. Between signing contracts, organising removal firms and trying to keep everyday life ticking over in the meantime, it's difficult to find time for the quieter family members. But a little thought put in advance can save you - and your pet - lots of trauma when it comes to upping sticks and flitting to a new home. Experts at Britannia Movers International, the UK's leading independent removal firm, have some sound advice to keep your cat happy on moving day and make sure he doesn't scarper off back to the old house as soon as you arrive at your new pad. Your cat could easily become distressed when a team of removal men arrive and start shifting everything with which he is familiar. So before the boys arrive, put Tiddles in a cat carrier, with a little food, in the smallest bedroom in the house and put a notice on the door telling the crew to leave that room until last. If your cat is of a nervous disposition, you could use a plug in pheromone diffuser - such as Feliway - in the room to help him relax. Don't feed your cat just before you leave the house. Take the cat out of his temporaryconfinement to let the movers finish the job. Then put the cat carrier securely in your car ready for the journey. Don't let him travel in the removal van. Although there have been many stories of stowaways, it's not a great idea for either the cat or the furniture. If you have moved locally it's possible that
your cat will return to his old hunting grounds and follow the trails back to the original house. If you think this is likely, tell the new occupants and ask them to call you if he turns up. Tell them not to feed him - no matter how fed up he looks! Once you have your cat ensconced in your new home - don't let him or her outside for at a fortnight. Help him to feel secure by rubbing a soft cloth around his face, then spreading the scent around the house by rubbing the cloth on doorways and furniture. When you do let him venture out, open the door and let him choose to explore - don't carry him. Don't feed him before he goes: if he's hungry he won't stray far. Leave the door open so he can easily get back in when he's ready. Chase any strange cats away - he'll need lots of help to establish his territory in the new area. A water spray is the method recommended by animal sanctuaries. Try to maintain the same routine you had at the old house. Make sure he has an identification collar with your phone number on and, if he's not microchipped, now's the time to do it. Moving house can be a stressful time for everybody. Follow these guidelines and you will help make sure it's as easy as it can be for your feline friend.

There have been a number of bike thefts in the local area recently so follow these tips to make sure your bike is secure. When not in use, store your bike in a locked garage or shed. Always lock your bike when you leave it, even if you are just popping into a shop or friend’s house for a minute. A D-shaped lock is recommended. Lock up anything on your bike that can be removed e.g. wheel, light. When locking your bike up, always lock it to something solid such as a lamp post or railings. Have your bike security marked. A bike shop or the police can stamp your postcode onto the bike and attach a sticker to deter thieves. Take a clear colour photo of your bike. You can hand this to the police if your bike is stolen. Make sure you have insurance cover for your bike.

The Garden in August & September Forecast your plants thirst! After the wettest winters in over 100 years this summer is turning out quite dry, but it’s not quite a drought, writes Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. Years ago when I worked on a busy weekly gardening magazine (Amateur Gardening), it was decided to run a special 8-page pull-out feature entitled “Dealing with the Drought” following a very dry winter and spring. Interestingly (but not amusingly), the week the magazine hit the newsstand and for the rest of the summer the rain fell like stair-rods in what turned out to be one of the wettest summers in years! That’s what happens

when you decide to write tips about the potential for hosepipe bans in the UK! So, that’s the predicament garden writers are faced with ahead of lead times. However, I do remember a very nice man from Anglian Water suggested back in February saying the chances of hosepipe restrictions would be “remote”. However, reduced rainfall in a traditionally wet month which July is, coupled with this spring and summers warm temperatures, perhaps we may need to hedge our bets! So, if you have a water butt, hopefully by the time you have read this it’s topping up nicely and the mulch and the

extra soil preparation you put in place at planting time is now paying off dividends with strong, healthy and productive growth. Elsewhere, those fruit and vegetable crops are nearing maturity or are ready for harvest early so you can plant further crops to maximise your soil. If, however, things are looking bleak and plants are looking tired, and normally by late July that’s true whatever the weather, here are few tips to keep your garden growing… • For vegetables, step up watering (and feeding) two weeks or so before harvesting. • Foliar feed your plants – feed them through the leaves using Phostrogen, Miracle-Gro or Maxicrop Seaweed Complete

Feed to help boost growth through the..... foliage rather than through the soil. • Aim to water in the early part of the evening so it's absorbed before evaporating. Inserting an empty soft drinks bottle close to your crops, such as these Tomato plants is a good way of getting the water directly to their roots. • Add a layer of mulch to keep moisture in; the soil does need to be sufficiently moist before adding the mulch. Add water-retaining gel (such as Swellgel Crystals) or Broadleaf P4 to compost. • Try to avoid watering plant leaves in direct sunlight because they can become scorched, particularly when they have hairy Vincent Landscapes of Buckingham est1990

foliage. • Scrape back the surface of the soil if it has become crusty to make sure the water goes to the roots. • Re-use house water (grey water) and collect any rain water from your house, shed and greenhouse. • Do not cut the lawn too short in the summer. • Put soaked shredded newspaper (pictured on page 22) under crops that need lots of water. • Use screens or windbreaks to reduce the effects of drying winds as wind burn can be more damaging than normal root stress. • Move container plants into the shade if you are going away on holiday and no one is watering your plants. It might be worth fitting some castors on the base of larger wooden pots. The best solution is try to be one step ahead by giving your plants as much tender loving care as you can, making sure they don’t become stressed. It is important to diligently water newly-established and high water requirement plants, and feed as well as spraying preventatively against diseases such as blight and mildew. This season we have already seen more incidents of Potato Blight and Powdery mildew so be prepared!

Containers generally need more regular watering and they do get used to regimes and routine, so bear this in mind when you pass over the responsibility to your family and friends if they help you with the watering when your go for your summer hols! Have a lovely summer whatever the weather folks!
