Buckingham Garden Centres popular Apple Weekend, over Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th September, receives a new twist this year as we welcome members of the North Buckinghamshire and Buckingham Beekeepers with their joint annual Honey show. They will be setting up late Saturday with judging and viewing on the Sunday. Gerry Edwards will once again returns as our guest apple identification expert (and a keen bee-keeper!) so please bring along 2-3 fruits from the tree you are looking to put a name to your mystery fruit. Top fruit grower and propagator Fritz de Zutter from Moulton College will be available for advise on all
aspects of fruit growing, including tips on selecting the best rootstocks. The Grow Your Own theme continues with Jason Breed from Kings Seeds, who will be on hand to talk Chillies as well as the key vegetables to sow and grow at this time of the year. There will also be wine, beer and food tasting, plus entertainment for the children with close-up magic and face-painting throughout the weekend. We’ll also be running a Tombola for PACE, our chosen charity of 2015.

With everyone trying to make healthier choices and save pennies wherever possible, a slow cooker provides the opportunity for us all to enjoy a healthy, home-cooked meal, without spending hours slaving over a stove. Cheaper cuts of meat become very tender and delicious when cooked slowly, and any cut-price vegetables, even those looking a little tired, can be gently cooked and then liquidised, to make tasty and nutritious soups. T he Ga rden in August/Se ptemb er The taming of the plot Keeping your garden under control at this time of the year is all about managing plant growth with hoes, secateurs, hand weeding, and, if you wish, chemicals, writes Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. The height of summer brings so much enjoyment in the garden. A perfect time for the whole family to get out and actually use the garden in all its glory, whether it be entertaining or simply relaxing in. However, warmth and moisture (which has been sadly lacking of late), also means weeds can quickly take hold and cause problems. Interestingly, only recently the Government’s rural agricultural office, Fera, published their hot-list of the UK’s most invasive plants, which includes the likes of Giant Hogweed, Japanese Knotweed (pictured pushing through a brick wall), Rhododendron ponticum and Himalayan Balsam.
These little (and big) rascals can cause serious damage to property and even to humans if your skin happens to come into contact with Hogweed as this will result in horrendous burns. Thankfully most garden weeds don’t come with such warnings; they just need to be tackled head on and destroyed swiftly and efficiently. The garden hoe, a much under used implement, really needs to be kept moving up and down

veggie rows and around plants in borders to help control annual weeds such as Chickweed and Hairy Bittercress. The difficult to control weeds – and we all know them – Bindweed (pictured showing its extensive root system), Couch Grass and Ground Elder – for example might be best hand weeded around established plants as weed killers can easily drift onto the foliage of your precious plants and kill them too! Timing is important. If you have areas completely weed-ridden, say a new plot, then more drastic action may be required. With weeds in full growth and in flower they are at a perfect stage for control by herbicides (weedkillers). Once weeds start to flower they are already regressing and creating food for the winter in their roots. So herbicides always hit more effectively when applied at this stage of growth. There are plenty on the market; however you will need to check the products carefully to see which is going to be best for you. Don’t forget you can lay weed-suppressing landscape fabric (available in varying grades and sizes) over those areas of soil you wish to keep permanently weed-free once you have controlled any weed issues. The permeable fabric will also help to keep the soil damp around your establishing plants. Planting through the fabric can be easily done by using scissors to cut out a
planting hole. This weed suppressing option may seem a fair amount of work to install, however on soils heavily infested by weeds such as Ground Elder you’ll reap the benefits very quickly. You can use weedkillers to spot treat individual weeds in the border or elsewhere too! Carefully targeted ready-to-use trigger sprays can be used, but do make sure the air is still when applying to avoid any drift. A safer option would be to use a gel formulation, such as Roundup Weedkiller Gel. This highly useful product provides precise, one-click, no mess application which precisely targets weeds in awkward places. Resembling a large glue-stick, the clever design applies the weedkiller through 30 small holes on the top. Once applied to the weed’s leaves the active ingredient moves through the leaves and on down into the roots, resulting in root death within a few weeks of application. For many gardeners there is a temptation for start removing the weeds as soon as they begin to turn yellow. Well, resist the temptation and allow the weeds to completely die

down and wait at least three weeks before clearing the site of top growth. A browse along any garden centre chemical shelf reveals plenty of weedkiller options but it can be a bit of a minefield, so if you are unsure of what and how to use these products, please do ask. Most products are based on Glysophate, however there are alternatives such as Vitax Finalsan Ultima Weedkiller and Neudorff Superfast & Long Lasting Weedkiller (both of these contain Pelargoni acid and Maleic hydrazide) and SKB Brushwood Killer (Triclopyr). As always do read the instructions carefully before use. As well as the weeds, our valued ornamental trees, shrubs and perennial plants tend to put on lots of luxuriant growth at this time of the year. Giving the plant a haircut after they have flowered is good practise as this will help stimulate new growth for a improved display next year. When it comes to roses, repeat flowering bush, shrub and climbing, they should be trimmed by around half after their first flush to encourage new growth for a further display in late summer.
Now is a good time to tackle our established hedge rows – both evergreens (including Box, Privet and Yew) as well as the likes of deciduous species, including popular natives like Quickthorn, Hornbeam and Blackthorn. Reducing the overall height as well as keeping the width within allocated bounds can be done now as any possible nesting birds have flown their nests. Whether you opt for mechanical hedge trimmers or hand shears, do make sure you keep your lines straight by reducing a small amount at a time to get the best look. Newly planted hedges need more care and controlled pruning to help develop the overall framework of the hedge. Reducing back lanky growth by one-third to a half can help to encourage further basal and lateral development to follow. Many perennials such as Delphiniums, Lupins and Geums will have now flowered and these would benefit from a simple light trimming back as this may help encourage a second flush of flowers or

at least a healthy flush of foliage later on. As for fruit trees those which produce a stone in their fruits (Apricots, Cherries, Damsons, Gages, Peaches, Plums and Nectarines) you have until the end of August to do any major pruning so avoiding the dreaded Silver Leaf disease (pictured left). However, you’ll need to wait until after leaf fall if you want to tackle Apple and Pear pruning this season. There’s no doubt with all this vegetative growth plants will certainly benefit for a feed, but which one do you chose? This largely depends on the age of the plant, whether it’s grown for its flowers, foliage or fruits or all three! All fruit – trees, bushes and soft fruit would benefit from an application of Sulphate of Potash (apply at a rate of 35g/m2). In the flower garden, including mixed borders and rose beds, an application of Vitax Q4 will help promote good general growth. Lime-hating plants such as Camellias, Heathers, Rhododendrons and Pieris grown in containers or in the ground require a specific ericaceous fertiliser to help keep the foliage green and healthy as they are prone the deficiencies if not fed correctly. It’s also worth top-dressing your plants with some fresh compost now too!

Whittlebury Charity Shopping Fair 2015
The fair will take place on Wednesday 23rd September 5pm to 9pm and Thursday 24th September 9am to 3.30pm at The Orangery and Pavilion, Whittlebury Park, Nr Towcester NN12 8XW www.whittleburycharityfair.co.uk Everyone is invited to attend this wonderful shopping extravaganza in The Orangery and Pavilion, Whittlebury Park, near Towcester, the venue is generously donated by Geoff and Carol Sargeant. There will be over 70 stallholders from all around the country selling clothing, gifts, toys, china, jewellery, home accessories and so much more. Shoppers can either get started on their Christmas shopping early or come to treat themselves from this unique selection of stalls. All the monies raised will go to Helen & Douglas House, an Oxford based hospice that provides care for babies, children and young adults with life shortening illnesses. Macmillan Northampton, cancer support in Northampton and the new charity this year, KidsAid. KidsAid is based in Northamptonshire and works with children and young people who have suffered traumatic events such as bereavement, domestic violence, abuse or neglect. They support them by providing play, art and drama therapy as well as parenting courses and family therapy. Early intervention to support these children and young people brings real benefits to their lives and ensures that these traumas do not manifest in later life.
