Care Visits at Home GOOD OLD FASHIONED SERVICE
Bluebird Care offers a realistic cost effective alternative to residential care. With familiar friends, relatives and possessions around, Bluebird Care ‘just happens.’
Bicester based Bluebird Care (Cherwell) is bringing its already successful brand of high quality care at home to the Buckinghamshire community. The care is provided in the familiarity of customer’s homes surrounded by family and friends based on “good old fashioned service” encompassing a range of services to support people to include personal care, companionship, respite care and also overnight and live-in care.
The company was set up in August 2012 by husband and wife team John and Suzzanne Elgar who after needing to source care for elderly grandparents, saw a real gap in the market for high quality care tailored specifically to people’s needs. After a very successful 18 months, and winning the prestigious Bluebird Care “Newcomer of the year for the Midlands” at the head offices annual conference in October 2013, the decision was made extend their vision for care into the wider community. The acquisition of Buckingham and the surrounding villages of North Bucks went ahead in December 2014 and the couple are now incredibly excited to be able to provide both local jobs and care services to the Buckingham community.
We offer everything from personal care to shopping, cleaning or social visits. In fact anything you need to stay in the comfort of your own home.

We found Jeremy!
Sister’s search for roadside hero is successful The sister of a man who died on a roadside in Northamptonshire last year, has found the individual who tried to save his life. Jeremy Kean, from Surrey, came forward just five days after #findjeremy, the campaign to find him, was launched.
proved fateful, the stranger’s first aid was lifesaving for others. The CPR was so effective that Mr Gregory’s organs were kept alive long enough for his two kidneys and liver to be donated, saving the lives of three people.
On September 26, 2013, Jeremy pulled over on the A43 near Towcester, to help local man Steve Gregory who had collapsed after coming off his motorcycle.
Mr Gregory’s sister, Tina Loggin, of Charlton, Banbury, searched ever since the incident for the man who delivered this lifesaving treatment, and was successful with the #findjeremy campaign which launched in early February.
A certified first aider (CFR), Jeremy gave CPR for 15 minutes, until an ambulance arrived at the scene. Where he wasn’t able to save Mr Gregory’s like from the brain haemorrhage which
Aided by press and radio coverage across more than four counties, the campaign gained the attention of the Ambulance Trust, which was able to locate Jeremy. It was a pleasant surprise for
10
Jeremy when he heard from Tina: “Although the outcome was very sad, it was great to hear that three other people have benefited from Steve's generosity (as an organ donor). It was very nice of Tina to make such an effort to find me, and I now have a twitter account, much to the surprise of my children! Being a CFR is very rewarding and it is nice to know our efforts are appreciated.” For Tina, finding Jeremy has given her the closure she was looking for: “Finding Jeremy has closed a door for our family now and I would like to thank all who joined in the campaign and spread the word.”

Here’s a few ideas… · Spring clean. · Buy some brightly-coloured flowers. · Get a haircut. Change your style or try a new colour. · Spend time with the kids being kids. Do what they · Learn something new. Find a course or try a craft · Exercise to ‘blow away the cobwebs’! · Hit the garden. · Go for a walk and a picnic. Stowe is especially · Get up earlier to enjoy the longer, warmer days. · If you’ve broken your New Year resolutions – forget it.

The Garden in March A tale of two trees We enjoy the colour and spectacle of both flowering cherries and crab apple trees, but which one makes the best tree for your garden? Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day delves a little deeper into what makes them special. If you watch ITV’s Downton Abbey (aka Highclere Castle in Hampshire) you will know Lord Grantham likes his trees, namely the wonderful and noble Cedar of Lebanon trees (Cedrus Libani) that grace the opening titles. They are huge, most of them were planted over 200 years ago, and dominate the landscape. Sadly, they are totally unsuitable for our average sized gardens. We have to look for something more realistic, a flowering tree that doesn’t grow too large, yet is
sympathetic to its surroundings. Highclere Castle and Cedrus libani So, which trees would be in contention for this accolade? Well, if the gloves were off then I suspect it would be a close run thing between the attractive and versatile flowering cherries stilted against the dual value of flower and fruits of ornamental crab apples. Japanese cherries are perfect for smaller gardens and their delightful spring blossom is legendary. Many of the varieties of Prunus also have a highly decorative autumn hue too, so don’t think its all about the flowers. Tall and narrow, as round as a lollipop or wide and weeping until they almost touch the floor, cherries are incredibly diverse. Cherries are fun. Many of them have wonderful bark, their young foliage is often Prunus Amanogawa pretty and their autumn colour can be magnificent. No matter how small your garden, there is

a cherry for you. If there is little space for a broad-topped tree, then the answer may be to go for a columnar cultivar. You could follow the planting fashion of the 1960s and try Prunus ‘Amanogawa’ – given an Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society almost 80 years ago. Its familiar upright branches are well-covered with clusters of soft pink flowers – perfect against a blue sky in late April or May. The Tibetan Cherry, Prunus serrula produces simple white flowers in April or May on airy branches, but in winter it’s the shiny, mahogany bark that catches the eye. Just a word of warning though cherries are relatively shallow rooted so avoid planting them in lawns; give them a decent border location. If there is space you could go for the nus Amanogawa Himalayan cherry, Prunus rufa. An emperor among cherries, famed for its peeling reddish-
Prunus ‘Kanzan’ brown and amber bark together with it the small clusters of pale pink flowers. The stalwarts for many street planting are the robust and stately Prunus ‘Kanzan’. It is without a doubt one of the showiest forms available. From the outset the young coppery foliage merges, turning green through the summer and showy autumnal hues come the autumn. The purple-pink double flowers cover the tree in April with the confetti effect flower drop following soon after. If you are looking for a Pendula Rubra compact weeping form, which only grows 7ft x 7ft (2m x 2m) in 20 years, so perfect for pot culture, then select Prunus pendula ‘Pendula Rubra’. This relative miniature cherry with deep

rose-pink flowers emerging from redder buds is a real showstopper. The arching branches are graceful and when the leaves turn from green to orange in the late autumn it looks spectacular. Cherry blossom trees are easy to grow and are not fussy, although they dislike poorly drained soil and will not tolerate boggy conditions. Improve the soil well prior to planting, adding planting compost, bone meal as well as applying some friendly-fungi, Rootgrow, to the roots. Crab apples (Malus) are close relatives to our highly productive and tasty varieties of apples. Brownie points are scored straight away as many of the varieties fruits, once ripened, can be used in the kitchen as well as their highly decorative value in the garden. What’s more some varieties have attractive hue to their foliage come the autumn. The crab apples colourful, fragrant
springtime blooms proMalus Evereste fruits vide a wonderful nectar pool for bees and of course provide pollination opportunities for other members of the apple clan, including eating varieties. As far as size, most crab apples do not grow much more than 20ft (6m) and that doesn’t happen overnight. Buckingham Malus Evereste clay doesn’t cause issues as far as establishing the tree; however make sure to work in plenty of organic material so the soil doesn’t dry out through the summer. If you are planning to set your crab apple tree in a lawn, do provide a good clear area of soil around the base of the tree. The soil should be mulched to a depth of 2in (5cm) so ensuring the roots have sufficient moisture available to them at all times. Crab apples prefer a sunny position, but unlike Cherries they will tolerate some shade. If you have a wall you want to cover, versatile crab apples can

also be espalier trained. Some crab apples, such as the famous 'John Downie', are prone to apple scab, but there are more resistant varieties available. First in the frame is Malus Gorgeous fruit Malus x zumi 'Golden Hornet', which forms a rounded tree, is a popular choice because its slightly oval fruits are goldenyellow and persist, if you are lucky, right thorough winter. The single flowers are pink in bud, then white. A popular variety with our customers at the Garden Centre is Malus ‘Evereste’. It makes a beautiful tree covered in pinkish tinge of the blossom which makes a lovely contrast to the fresh green foliage. You normally see a plethora of pollinating insects dancing over the blossom too. Finally, don’t miss Malus ‘Gorgeous’. This one is grown primarily for its large glossy red fruits which make wonderful crab apple jelly; however, its semi weeping habit and its profuse white-pink blossom makes it a good garden choice. So, two great small garden trees vying for your attention! Which one are you going to choose? Both work perfectly in a small garden, so the choice is yours!
