Well, Brackley is certainly the place to be this June – there are some fantastic community events lined up! The annual Brackley Soapbox Derby takes place on 5th June from 2pm in Brackley High Street. This is a fantastic family event which promises to be even better in 2011 as the soapboxes will run on the main road this year. A 2011 Mercedes F1 Grand Prix car will also be on display during the day. On Saturday 18th June, it’s Brackley’s Carnival time! This year’s theme is Fairy Tales and the carnival procession, led by Brackley’s new mayor, will leave the Sawmills at 11am reaching the main showground (Magdalen College St John’s Site) at around 11.45am. The gates open at 12 noon. There’s loads to do at this year’s Carnival, including great acts for all ages (performing throughout the afternoon), a six-a-side football tournament, wonderful dance displays by local groups in the Community Arena, a band stand showcasing local talent, a fun fair, dog show, bouncy castles, and lots of community and trade stalls for you to browse. Don’t miss it!
If you’re the energetic sort, Brackley & District Running Club’s 2nd Annual 10k Road Race (otherwise known as the F1 Chicken Run) is on Sunday 19th June. See page 28 for information. The 16th Brackley Music Festival runs from June 24th to July 9th. This year’s Festival is bigger and better with two all-day events taking place in Brackley Park. On Saturday 25th June will be Festival in the Park. Starting at midday and running until around 10.30pm, this familyfriendly festival hopes to widen the appeal of the Brackley Music Festival by combining performances by young people and professional musicians. It is also hoped the park will be filled with circus style children’s entertainers and refreshments. Folk in the Park - a similar event celebrating folk music will take place on Sunday 26th June. How wonderful it is to see so much going on in Brackley this June. See you there! P.S. If this isn’t e n o u g h entertainment, there’s the Syresham Scarecrow Festival on 25th and 26th June (read more about this on page 26) and the Buckingham Country Show on 4th June (see page 13 for further details). CATS DISAPPEAR FROM BRACKLEY A suspicious number of domestic cats have gone missing in the Brackley area over recent weeks. After a number of local cat owners posted notices about their missing pets on the Brackley Gossip Girls (BGG) Facebook group, it became apparent that this could possibly be more than an unhappy coincidence. Cat owners are urged to remain vigilant and to keep their cats in at night time if possible. Owners are encouraged to have their cats microchipped and to keep their contact details up-to-date at the microchip company. If your cat goes missing, spread the word as quickly as possible. As well as making use of Facebook, it is a good idea to stick up a few posters and distribute some leaflets to local homes showing a photo of your cat, details of when it was last seen, and your contact details. Ask your neighbours to check their garages, sheds, and Jen Oakton gardens.

Zumbathon at Magdalen College School in Brackley. Starting at 2pm, quite simply it’s a two hour Zumba party which will raise money for four fantastic charities - Cystic Fibrosis, MS, Down’s Syndrome and The British Heart Foundation. Want to take part? Go for it! There’s no sponsorship money to find. To raise money for the charities, you simply have to buy a ticket, turn up, and have fun. UPDATE OLD LAPTOPS AND PC’S WITH A FRESH NEW SYSTEM I have had several customers come to recently wanting to update old laptops and desktops to newer versions of Windows. This is possible but most of the time will also require several upgrades to hardware as well as the software. You could end up spending around £200 updating the system and the components, when the laptop itself is worth a lot less. Enter Linux and particularly Linux Mint, I run this system at home and is very user friendly, so much so that my wife and daughter both get on fine with it. The software is “Open Source” and is completely free. Mint is by far the best transition from Windows to Linux as it shares the same desktop experience with a start menu like Windows. It is also very light weight and will run nicely on old laptops and desktops. If you would like to put some life back into your old system give me a call and I'd be more than happy to come and give you a demonstration of the software. Michael Hurst

SYRESHAM SCARECROW FESTIVAL This year’s Syresham Scarecrow Festival will be held on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th June from 10am each morning. Every year, residents of this popular village create their own fabulous scarecrows based on a given theme - this year it is ‘Stars of Stage and Screen’. The scarecrows are then displayed around the village for visitors to admire. It’s a wonderful outing for people of all ages. Open gardens, stalls, refreshments, and an art exhibition add to the interest. As in previous years, there will be a car boot sale on Sunday 26th June. F1 CHICKEN RUN Its all go for the Brackley and district running club with preparations for the 2nd annual 'F1 chicken run 'on June the 19th, 2011. The race is a 10k course starting from the Brackley town centre park and taking in the picturesque village of Turweston. You can’t write a looking good list for June without including roses. The vast array on offer these days will often repeat flower if dead-headed regularly, but most will peak this month to give stunning displays. There are many species of rose that, once established, will look after themselves without any extra input. Examples are Rosa glauca with it’s bluish green leaves and pretty pink flowers. Rosa rugosa and it’s cultivars are largely trouble free apart maybe from possible aphid attack. Colours include white, pink and wine-red. The most fancy varieties, however, do need

The Garden in June love and attention to keep them at their best. Good deep soil is essential as is a regular mulch with well rotted manure or compost, and watering in the driest spells. Clear the leaf litter in the autumn and prune according to type at the end of the winter. Rose Norfolk has cheerful bright yellow flowers in abundance and gives excellent ground cover, spreading to a metre or more.
