Where do you want to eat?
I don’t know, where do you want to eat?
I don’t care—you pick it. No, I’m not going for that—you pick it. Well, we’re in Salem, so... I know. We only have about 75 choices.
T’S EAT
It’s true. Although we can’t help you out with the never ending dialog on ‘where are we going to eat?’ it’s a good chance Salem does have a place you’ll like. With over 75 restaurants and foodie
options, Salem has secured its destination as great place to enjoy food and beverages.
Long time residents, newbies, folks from neighboring towns and communities, and visitors
all find their tastebuds satisfied thanks to the many owner-operators, chefs, servers, and staff who await your arrival. Take a look at what’s on the menu in Salem, Virginia.
Newest Arrivals
In just the past year alone, Salemites welcomed the arrival of over half a dozen new ‘foodie’ establishments. The restaurant business is a funny thing. People become patrons and get so attached to their favorites. So, when two popular businesses announced their closure, folks were upset. Restaurants come and go (a lot of shakeup around the pandemic) of course; but almost before we could shake our heads in disappointment, a whole new slew of restaurants stepped right in. They include:

The biggest sports news story for Salem this year is the rebranding of its minor league baseball team. In similar direction with other minor league teams across the country that have adopted unique and creative brands, often associated with the home locale, Salem revealed its new name—The Salem Ridge Yaks. This is the FIRST SEASON with the new identity.
“This is a great moment for baseball in Salem. The
RidgeYaks are a creative and symbolic reflection of our community.
That’s
what Minor League Baseball is all about — it’s fun, it’s unique, and it brings people together.”
Allen Lawrence General Manager Salem Ridge
Yaks
The Salem Ridge Yaks are rooted in the resilience and rugged beauty of Southwest Virginia.
From the misty, blue hues of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the sunlit stands of Virginia Pine, our home teaches toughness. We embrace the calm focus of paddling a kayak through serene waters and the unyielding strength of the Yak—a symbol of staying resilient, steady, and unafraid of hard ground. We embody the spirit of this dramatic landscape: making do, showing up, and never giving in.

“Baseball has really cornered the market on fun and unique and entertaining minor league professional team names.”
Brodie Brazil YouTuber & Sports Broadcaster
“We’re proud of our continued partnership with Salem and grateful for the important role the team plays in developing future Red Sox players. This rebrand is an exciting new chapter that celebrates the passion and pride of the Salem community while continuing the strong connection between our organizations. We look forward to many more seasons of great baseball and shared success between Salem and Boston.”
Sam Kennedy Red Sox President & CEO
“This ballpark is such a blessing to our community. For us to have a brand that’s fun, exciting, unique, quirky, but has a story to tell… that’s a timeless brand.
Change can be scary, but change is good. Anyone that is familiar with the minor league landscape knows that it is not the norm to remain with the parent-club name anymore.”
Blair Hoke Assistant General Manager
Salem Ridge Yaks
“It was just time to make the change. This is the direction that minor league baseball is going. We felt like it was a disservice to this area, and to the people in this community, to not change the name and to reflect it in a way that is close-knit to this area. Merchandise sales is a part of it. We’ve got a lot of Yankees fans and Cubs fans and Dodgers fans and Orioles fans that come out to the ballpark every night, and they were a little hesitant to wear ‘Red Sox’ across their chests.
We struggled being the Red Sox here in Southwest Virginia. The Red Sox are still iconic. Now we’re moving on. We’re flipping the page.”
Allen Lawrence General Manager Salem Ridge Yaks
There’s a phrase Lisa hears more often than any other when she’s working behind the front counter at Charlotte’s Web Antique Mall on Main Street in Salem.
“Hey, hon—look at this.”
And the words can come from anywhere throughout the shop. Most of the time, from out of nowhere, because the phrase is uttered from someone looking at a unique item at one of the booths tucked away in one of the aisles. (More often than not, the person talking is looking at something that sparks a memory from the past.)
Charlotte’s Web owner-operator John Breeden says the store draws all kinds of people—from
all over—and from right here in our neck of the woods. He also says it’s the retail merchants, and shops like this one, that attract people to towns like Salem.
Retail shops bring foot traffic. And places like antique shops, curio boutiques, and other consumer-oriented merchants generate a vibe for downtowns that both locals and visitors alike appreciate.
It’s a “hey, hon—look at this” kind of place on a map or your GPS.
Salem is certainly a checkmark for people who appreciate the most interesting discoveries. Here is a list of some of our antique and curio shops:

—Jessica Chastain
