Berringa Community News has updated our website. The website was set up in 2013, and we managed the upgrades until this year. The last upgrades overwhelmed our technical competence, so we took the opportunity to upgrade the site. The site has a new look and is easier to view on different devices. There is the same capability to view the current and previous editions of the newsletter, check the calendar for details of local events, and source local trades, services and community groups.
The updated service directory can provide a link to an advertisement or more information. There are also forms that can enable an event to be added to the calendar or a local service or business to advertise in the services directory.
We also provide details of our advertising rates and publication dates. Check it out at www.berringacommunitynews.com.au
The Berringa Community News is a non-profit quarterly newsletter produced by a group of volunteers. The cost of printing and maintaining the website is covered by advertising revenue and donations from the community.
We appreciate the donations made by community groups and individuals, as they help keep advertising costs low for local businesses and free for community groups.

Berringa Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) manages the 8 publicaccess defibrillators available on the Berringa Peninsula (see location information on page 18). These defibrillators have been bought with funds raised through public appeals and the fundraising activities of the team members.
The CERT team regularly checks that the defibrillators are functioning, the batteries and pads are in date, and the registration with Ambulance Victoria is current. It costs $500 per defibrillator every 5 years to replace the pads and batteries (equivalent to $800 per year to maintain all the defibrillators). We are seeking donations, or sponsorship of a defibrillator, to keep them running. You can also contribute by joining the Berringa CERT committee, which is made up of team responders and community members and manages fundraising and expenditure. The Berringa CERT Committee AGM will be held on Monday, 10th August 2026 at 6 pm, Bethanga Hall. Come along and find out more.

In September this year, myself, Will Green, along with my two younger siblings Riley and Maddison, have been given an incredible opportunity. We've been selected as part of a group of 16 players from our tennis academy to travel to the United States to train at the world-renowned John Newcombe Tennis Ranch in Texas.
This is something we've been working towards for a long time, and it means so much to us as a family. The trip will give us the chance to experience elite coaching, advanced training methods, high-level match play, and professional strength and conditioning programsopportunities we don't usually get at home.
To help make this dream a reality, we're reaching out to our community for support. We're currently seeking sponsorship and donations to help cover the cost of travel and training. We're also grateful for any goods or services that could be donated for fundraising raffles.
As part of our fundraising, we're selling firewood:
Box wood - $200 per cubic metre
Redgum - $220 per cubic metre
Any support, big or small, would truly mean the world to us and go a long way in helping my siblings and me take part in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
If you'd like to support us or purchase firewood, please feel free to contact our dad, Jono Green, 0422 965 024.
Thank you so much for your support!

The Bethanga Cemetery Trust sees its purpose as being the custodians of the history and stories of Bethanga. Its role is to maintain, promote and care for Bethanga Cemetery as a place of positive connection and reflection for the community.
Our vision is to ensure that Bethanga Cemetery is a vibrant, welcoming place for the community and visitors, providing accessible services, celebrating local history and fostering connections.
• The Trust has done lots of work over the past 4 months. In April we came together and worked on a strategic plan for the Trust, looking forward over the next 3-5 years. The plan was adopted at the May meeting and will be on the website soon. https://bethangacemetery.rip/. The next steps are to prioritise actions and develop business plans to meet our goals.
• We have a new sign up at the cemetery which was purchased under a grant from the Berringa Peninsula Community Network and the Victorian Government. It has taken us a while to get it up, but please head on down and have a look.
• More Trust members are undertaking Class B Cemetery governance training this year, provided by the Victorian Department of Health. This ensures we continue to meet our legislative responsibilities under the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2003 (the Act) and the Cemeteries and Crematoria Regulations 2025.
• An important part of our work this year is to undertake a full review of our policies and related procedures. This is to ensure we continue to comply with the requirements of the Act and Regulations, both for the proper functioning of the Trust and to improve the safety and amenity of the cemetery. The policy review has commenced and may lead to some changes. Relevant approved policies will be published on our website, along with information about how they will be implemented and monitored.
Policies currently under consideration include:

Fee structure and management (changes to fee proposals will require further approval by the Department of Health).
Memorialisation Policy – what is and is not permitted on and around grave sites and memorials.
Monumental Mason Policy - sets out the standards and requirements to be met by monumental masons, their staff and other contractors engaged by families to install a permanent monument, plaque or similar on a place of interment within the cemetery.
Purchasing and Tendering Policy - ensures that procurement for the Trust is consistent with the Victorian Government Purchasing Board guidelines.
Instrument of Delegation – describes how the powers of the Trust are delegated and managed under the Act.
I love cemeteries – what can I do?
As our planning progresses, there may be ways people can get involved or help that we have not yet thought of. If you have an idea or think you would like to volunteer in some capacity in the future, you can let us know via the website.
Donations – we all know costs are increasing continually. The Trust will set up easy pathways for anyone to donate to support the maintenance and improvement of the site. We are also planning to actively fundraise to help us meet our goals, as well as apply for grants.
How can I get in touch with the Trust?

Following a big fundraising effort over the last two years, and the injection of some additional funding for improvements, we have been able to commence work on the sensory garden in the Lakeview Courtyard.
Pavers have been removed to make way for a level surface, and sensory garden features are being added. Our landscapers have been busy creating a beautiful and usable space for our residents to enjoy.
Thank you to the community for supporting us to be able to achieve this. It is hoped that the garden will be finished and planted over the next few weeks.

At all stages of life, females are at greater risk of ill health than males. On average, females live longer than males (85 years versus 81 years), experience chronic health conditions at higher rates and experience poor mental health at higher rates. Females also have specific sexual and reproductive health needs that can impact or exacerbate other health conditions.
Free Exercise groups are currently being held in Bellbridge, and are open to everyone. For further information, please phone the Allied Health Team on 02 6071 5210.

The longer people live, the more likely they are to experience some form of disability. Women aged 75–84 and over are more likely to have severe or profound disability than men. The prevalence of chronic conditions for women increases with age. Females reported higher rates of anxiety disorders and affective disorders than males, whereas males reported more than twice the rate of substance use disorders.
Where you live and your financial situation matters as well as your gender – there are health workforce shortages in rural and regional areas, with long wait times and limited access to specialists. Women also tend to have poor access to bulk-billed primary healthcare; this is exacerbated if you live in a rural or regional area.
Early detection works – for females, the 23% decrease in mortality from colorectal cancer is likely due to the introduction of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program in 2006 which aims to detect and treat abnormalities early. 40% of men invited in 2022–2023 completed a bowel test, compared with 44% of women. The five-year survival rate for breast cancer has improved, from 79% in 1991–1995 to 92% in 2016–2020.
Access to screening matters - Participation rates for BreastScreen Australia and the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program is highest for women living in Inner regional and Outer regional areas, and lower among First Nations women, women who speak a language other than English at home and for women in
remote areas and more disadvantaged areas.
Males in Australia are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than females. Between 1991–1995 and 2016–2020, the 5-year survival rate for men rose from 51% to 70%, while for women it rose from 59% to 73%. Men experience higher overall cancer mortality rates.

It’s been a productive and positive few months at the Talgarno Recreation Reserve, with a strong focus on community connection, future planning, and making the most of our shared space.
One of the key priorities this quarter has been reviewing the recent community survey. The committee is carefully working through your feedback and using it to shape a practical “business plan” for the reserve moving forward. It’s been fantastic to see ideas already coming to life, with activities like yoga and art beginning to take shape. A big thank you to our committee being lead by Jess Grey for helping turn these ideas into reality.
We would love to see even more community-led initiatives at the hall. If you have an idea for an activity, event, or regular gathering or if you’d like to run or organise something please reach out. The reserve is here for everyone, and we’re always looking for ways to bring people together.
A huge thank you also goes to the wonderful group of community and committee members who attended the working bee on Friday 1st May. With many hands making light work, the outside of the reserve received a muchneeded clean-up and refresh. Your time and effort are greatly appreciated and make a real difference.
In April, the hall’s kitchen successfully underwent its renewal to remain a verified commercial kitchen. This is a valuable asset for our community, and we encourage
everyone to make use of it whether for events, catering, or small business needs. Hall hire is available and is a great way to utilise this fantastic facility.
Hall Hire Rates:
Local community members: $150 hire fee + $150 bond
Out of town hirers: $250 hire fee + $150 bond
Meetings: $15 per hour
Kids’ parties: $50 hire fee + $50 bond
Bonds are fully refundable provided the hall is cleaned and left undamaged, in line with our insurance requirements. For bookings, terms and conditions, or more information, please contact Anthea Redman or email talgarnorecreationreserve@gmail.com
Looking ahead, we’re excited to be hosting a Bunnings Wodonga BBQ on Sunday 26th July. Come along and support the reserve or, if you’re able to lend a hand on the day, we would greatly appreciate your help.
Thank you to everyone who continues to support and contribute to the Talgarno Recreation Reserve. It’s your involvement that keeps our community thriving.

parkrun is a free, weekly 5km walk, jog or run held every Saturday in communities around the world, welcoming people of all ages and abilities. In Bellbridge, a dedicated group of local community members are working with parkrun HQ to bring this much loved global event to life along the foreshore. With support from a parkrun Australia ambassador, the team is progressing the steps to establish a safe and accessible course for the community.
There is already strong local interest, with volunteers stepping forward to help make Bellbridge parkrun a reality. Once everything is in place, the event will offer a regular opportunity for people to connect, stay active and enjoy the beautiful location together in a welcoming and inclusive environment.
parkrun events are entirely community led and volunteer driven, and that is where locals can play a vital role.
parkrun needs people to make it happen. Do you enjoy meeting new people, helping others and getting your weekly dose of exercise? We would love more people to get involved. All it takes is being on the roster every month or two for an hour on a Saturday morning. If we can all share the load, it gives everyone a chance to participate as well.
If you would like to put your hand up to help out occasionally or often, please contact the Event Directors: Liz Welch 0409 304302 Karen Barnes 0427 526289

The Towong Shire Council in collaboration with Mathieu Dore Coaching produced this event, including a run between the Koetong Pub and Pelican Park on the foreshore of Lake Hume, Tallangatta. The damage to parts of the rail trail in summer 2026 bushfires required the route to be changed. It will now start at the Bethanga Hotel 7.30am Sunday 7 June 2026.
Please note the road closures associated with the event

Thank you to Greg Hayes who has agreed to regularly contribute weather related articles for Berringa Community News readers.
Thanks to a few good rainfall events Autumn was well above average and, with warm soils, pasture (and weed) growth was exceptional, but this has reduced soil moisture levels.
The BOM outlook for Winter is for below average rainfall. If an El Niño develops there will be pressure on pastures, fodder reserves and stock water.
The Hume Reservoir recorded 188 mm for Autumn (February - April) which was 35% above average. Both February and March were more than double the average, while April was 30% below average. But the rainfall was very patchy, with some lucky and others missing out. Carinya had only 22mm in February but 151 mm in March.

The autumn forecast from BOM in February was totally inaccurate – it was unusually wet instead of unusually dry. To be fair, this was the result of 3 storms that dumped 110 mm, and I don’t think BOM or any other forecasters can predict these events anymore. Most of the rain came when a cold front met an inland trough bringing moisture down from the north.

The rolling 12- month rainfall here has seemingly turned a corner, having risen to 430 mm over autumn, but still way below average (700 mm).
BOM’s model gives a more than 60% chance that rainfall through to the end of August will be below average, and they are pessimistic about the spring since it seems likely (but not certain) that an El Niño will develop.

Dale Grey also expects June to September to be drier than average, but he stresses that other outcomes are possible.
Our rainfall is strongly influenced by climate patterns such as El Niño and La Niña in the Pacific, the Indian Ocean Dipole, and the Madden–Julian Oscillation, which can influence how much tropical moisture reaches southern Australia and how active rain-bearing fronts become. As ocean temperatures have warmed over recent decades, the atmosphere is behaving differently from past seasons in the historical record. BOM and other forecasters still use past patterns as a guide, but they now rely much more heavily on computer models that simulate the atmosphere and oceans to forecast weather and rainfall. BOM’s seasonal forecasts are updated weekly based on how current ocean conditions are evolving. I will be watching those updates to see if an El Niño develops and reacting accordingly.

As the weather cools down, things are heating up at Bethanga Hotel, with warm meals, roaring fires and plenty happening.
Jam Night continues on the second Wednesday, while Trivia Night falls on the third Wednesday of each month and has quickly become one of the pub’s busiest nights. With tables consistently filling, there may even be a little surprise in the works there soon.
Wednesday nights are also home to our $25 Parmi Night, with a rotating variety of toppings served alongside chips and salad. Thursdays now feature Pool Comp Night and our $25 Porterhouse special. Sundays continue to revolve around our roast lunches, bringing everyone together for a relaxed afternoon at the pub.
In March, we were proud to host local CFA volunteers, partners and those working behind the scenes throughout the fire season as a small thank you for everything they do for our community. A special thank you also goes to Mel and Anthea for helping make the afternoon possible.

On June 7th, Bethanga Hotel will host the start of the Pub to Pelican Marathon. The Bethanga Golf Club will be cooking bacon and egg rolls on the BBQ at the pub, while the coffee machine will be running bright and early for runners and supporters heading off down the hill. Come by for a brekkie and coffee and help send the runners off.
You may have also noticed a few small changes happening around the pub lately. The back deck has had a refresh and the interior is slowly getting an upgrade. The old residence out the back is also currently being demolished, with something new quietly in the works there too.
As always, thank you for your ongoing support.
Bethanga Hotel wouldn’t be what it is without everyone who pops in for a meal, a drink or a chat by the fire, along with our wonderful team behind the scenes who help make it all happen each week.
Cheers
Jac & Dan

Talgarno Tennis Club has been keeping busy through the off season, with plenty of activity, friendly rivalry and strong club spirit lighting up the courts.
Our recent pickleball competitions brought 16 community members together for some great after hours action, and this time, we even ran a kids’ competition night. It’s been fantastic to see everyone’s skills improving, and the banter and celebrations have definitely been a highlight!

Construction planning is also well underway for the club’s next big milestone. Work on the new shelter will begin in June, marking the start of an exciting period of upgrades. As part of the project, the existing clubrooms will be
demolished, with the aim of moving into the new rooms in time for the summer pennant season.

Looking ahead, our AGM will be held in August. This is a key opportunity for members to come together, prepare for the upcoming season, and help shape events, competitions, and club activities. New and returning players are always welcome; your ideas and involvement make a real difference.
The club is always on the lookout for new members. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned player, there’s a place for you. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome across pennant tennis, Fast Four, and pickleball. We’re excited to be entering both adult and kids’ teams in next season’s pennant competition.
With more events on the way, keep an eye on our social pages for upcoming Fast Four and pickleball competitions in the spring.
We’re also beginning to look ahead to our 2026/2027 season sponsors. Sponsorship plays a huge role in supporting community sport, so keep an eye out for more information soon, and please get in touch if you or your business would like to be involved.
If you’re interested in sponsoring, playing, or joining in, reaching out is easy. Email the club and come along to be part of the action.

Winter is a quiet period in our social calendar, with a major emphasis on conducting pruning and getting our Christmas trees ready for harvesting in late spring or early summer for Christmas. We are working on our social event for seniors' week in October this year, as well as Christmas Carols on the first Sunday in December at the Hume Boat Club, Bellbridge.

The Bethanga Cricket Club season has come to an end for another year. A and B grades both had the opportunity to play in the preliminary finals, but had no success getting into the grand final. C grade had a fantastic year, making it to their first grand final but just fell short to Mt Beauty . We look to come back fighting stronger for the 2026-2027 season!

Follow the Bethanga and District Rural Fire Brigade on Facebook for localised information, but don’t rely on it entirely.
As suspected, we had a busier than usual summer season, particularly with the fire that started at Mt Lawson and burned for a few weeks, consuming over 100,000 hectares. Our brigade, along with all other Tallangatta Group brigades and many other units from across the state, had one of our tankers and/or Ultralight deployed to the fire most days and nights for two weeks. Many thanks to over 20 of our volunteers who completed at least one day or night shift during this time, as well as attended local incidents that occurred over the same period.
As Captain, I am extremely proud of our brigade and the commitment our members have shown to ensure the safety of our community. I am also very appreciative of all those who assisted in the background, organising crews and replenishing supplies at the station. Speaking of supplies, we had so much product donated to the brigade that it brought tears of gratitude to my eyes. I really can’t believe the amount of giving in these times. Thank you so very much to all who gave their time, money and supplies during this time.
The brigade once again competed at District 23 Championships at Eldorado. We now have 11 juniors competing and are doing very well indeed. Keep up the great work, team.
The brigade recently held its AGM and bi-annual elections, with a few changes being made to the Management Team. The team for the next two years is as follows:
Captain – Shane Bracegirdle
1st Lieutenant – Daniel Stahl
2nd Lieutenant – Mel Naismith
3rd Lieutenant – Daniel O’Connell
4th Lieutenant – Mark Trafford
5th Lieutenant – Stuart Smythe
Secretary – Molly Peterson
Treasurer – Liz Fagence
Chairperson – Peter Arkins
Community Safety Liaison – Mel Naismith
Training Officer – Daniel O’Connell
Thank you all for standing up and committing to make the
brigade better for all.
Thanks also to the outgoing members of the Management Team; your services for the last term were greatly appreciated.
We are looking to build on our experience within the brigade and have training more regularly, so we can be ready for whatever is required to assist the community. If you would like to join the brigade, please contact any of the members of the BMT for information, it really is a rewarding activity that can get you involved in the community.

The soils program, led by soil scientist David Hardwick, has proven both interesting and very informative for attendees.
The first session started with the interpretation of everyone’s soil test at the Talgarno Hall. The second session gave attendees a refresher on soil composition and health prior to two farm visits, one at Hugh and Nene Green’s and the second at Jim and Julie de Hennin’s.
At Green’s, we looked firstly at a freshly sown rye grass pasture to determine plant density, plant and soil health and weed control
The second paddock was similar but was sown a little later. A soil probe was inserted at both sites to determine soil compaction, and a pH test was taken. Much was learned about the impacts of compaction on the soil.
A great history of both paddocks was provided, showing all treatment details over time, and facilitated great discussion that took place.
At de Hennin’s property, we looked at a nine-year-old Sardi 7 Lucerne paddock that is starting to show its age. The plant numbers had decreased, the spaces between plants had been taken up by weeds, and the Lucerne plants were not as healthy as they should be.
As with the other paddocks, a soil core was inserted to assess compaction, and a pH test was conducted. Remediation suggestions were made to over sow with oats and rye grass after spraying with spray seed to reduce weed growth.

Watch out for confirmation in July when Landcare membership renewals will take place along with a plant giveaway
Mitta to Murray Landcare Network held a presentation night at Fernvale Hall about Dogs and Foxes Management, complete with a Demo on night vision and thermal imaging, plus trapping methods under the Partnership against Pests program, which was attended by some of our members.
Feel free to contact any of our committee members if you have any Landcare enquiries.

The start of the year at Bellbridge Early Years Learning Centre (BEYLC) has seen a warm welcome to many new families, with total enrolments at the centre now sitting at 44
With May comes Mother’s Day and the children (and educators!) have been working hard on their Mother’s Day gifts, including handmade mobiles and keychains, complete with hand painted wrapping paper.
This year, children from Bellbridge Early Years Learning

Centre had the honour of participating in the Anzac Day ceremony in Bethanga and what a truly beautiful and moving service it was.
Our little ones brought along a handmade wreath, lovingly crafted at the centre, which was laid at the ceremony with the help of Centre Manager Rebecca West. It was a proud and touching moment for everyone present, as our youngest community members took part in remembering and honouring those who served.
We are so proud of all the children and thank Rebecca for making this meaningful experience possible. Moments like these remind us why connecting our children to community traditions matters so much.
A huge thank you to everyone who supported our annual bulb fundraiser and our firewood raffle. Your generosity means so much to the centre and directly benefits the children. This year, fundraising efforts are helping us purchase new outdoor equipment, sensory toys, and teddies for the centre.
A special thank you to Madelaine Northey and family for kindly donating a trailer load of firewood for this year’s raffle winners. Our committee or rather, the committee husbands also enjoyed a wonderful morning splitting wood on the Northey farm in preparation for the raffle.
Whether you purchased bulbs, entered the raffle, spread the word, or helped in any way, it all makes a difference. We are grateful to be part of such a wonderful and supportive community.
Behind every happy, thriving child at Bellbridge Early
Years Learning Centre is a dedicated team of educators, teachers, and staff who show up every day with warmth, patience, and passion.
We want to say a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you. The care and commitment you bring to our children's early learning journey does not go unnoticed and we are so grateful our little ones are in such wonderful hands.

If current and future families of the centre would like to order uniforms (absolutely optional) they can be ordered here, with a percentage of sales going back to the centre: https://eduthreads.com.au/collections/bellbridge-earlyyears-learning-centre
The Friends of Bellbridge Early Years Learning Centre is a parent and community group working alongside the staff at Bellbridge Early Years Learning Centre to support the children, families, and wider centre community. Through fundraising, grant applications, working bees, social events, and advocacy, we help create a nurturing and enriching environment for the children at the centre. Membership is open to anyone who supports these aims, including parents, grandparents, caregivers, and friends of the centre. The more members we have, the stronger our ability to secure funding and support for BEYLC. We meet approximately every two months and welcome involvement big or small throughout the year.

School Values
RAPPORT – Respect Acceptance Persistence Pride Optimism Resilience Truth

Over the past three months, Bethanga Primary School has been buzzing with activity, celebrating learning, community connection and student growth both inside and beyond the classroom.
Our Purpose We provide all students from Bethanga, Bellbridge and beyond with an inspiring and responsive curriculum to promote thinking and encourage curiosity. We nurture individual talents and needs in our setting underpinned by high expectations, quality opportunities and caring personalized attention in order four our children to reach their full academic and social potential.
Students embraced a wide range of enriching experiences throughout March, April and May. Highlights included the Grade 5/6 camp to Sovereign Hill, where students stepped back in time to explore Australia’s gold rush history through hands-on activities including gold panning, visiting the Eureka Museum and attending the spectacular Aura light show. The experience tied beautifully into classroom learning and gave students lasting memories of adventure and friendship.
April also saw the Grade 3/4 students head off to 15 Mile Creek Camp for a four-day outdoor education experience focused on resilience, independence and teamwork. Students challenged themselves through activities such as hut building, hiking, ziplining, rafting and bike riding, all while building confidence and strengthening friendships.
Back at school, students continued to engage in exciting classroom learning. From launching into a new integrated studies topic on space by following the Artemis II launch, to participating in literacy, numeracy, arts, sport and respectful relationships programs, Bethanga students have continued to demonstrate curiosity and enthusiasm for learning.
Community spirit has also been a major focus this term. The school proudly commemorated ANZAC Day, with students representing the school at the Bethanga service and laying a student-made wreath at the Cenotaph. The respectful conduct and thoughtful participation of students reflected the strong values underpinning the school community.
Fundraising and community events have brought families together, including a successful Bunnings BBQ and Movie Night fundraiser supporting the school’s participation in the Victorian State School Spectacular. Student leadership was also on display during special lunch days and school events, with students taking active roles in helping organise and support activities.
Sporting opportunities have continued to thrive, with students participating in cross country events, cluster sports days and a range of physical activities that encourage teamwork, participation and school pride.
At the heart of it all is Bethanga Primary School’s strong sense of community, care and personalised learning. With a continued focus on academic growth, wellbeing and positive relationships, students are being supported to become confident, capable and compassionate young people.
