Australia Day 2014 It was a fine morning for the 2014 Australia Day Celebration at Bellbridge. Attendance seemed to be down on previous years but we enjoyed the breakfast provided by the Lake Hume Rotary Club. The naval cadets, led by Wayne Smith performed the flag raising ceremony. I inwardly groaned when the guest speaker was introduced as being awarded an Order of Australia in 1997 for his services to chess, bridge and the community. What would a chess grand master have to say? It shows we should not judge a book by its cover. Richard Rozen was a Holocaust survivor and related his childhood experiences as a Jew in war torn Poland and his arrival as a refugee in Australia as 16 year old. He plucked Max Elliot from Talgarno from the audience to help him contrast the experience of a 10 year old in 1940s Poland and a 10 year Australian today.

I cannot remember what Max said his best birthday present ever was but I do remember that Richard Rozen said his was a loaf of bread that was he given for his 10th birthday and he made it last 6 months. Richard tasted his first milk and honey on his arrival Australia. His speech reminded me how blessed we to live in Australia and how much this country has to offer. Councillor Peter Joyce announced the local recipient of Certificate of Appreciation as David Elder of Bethanga.

I have known Dave for some time and he attends most local events but he is not always on time. He really timed it well this time - just as the National Anthem was being sung to conclude the celebration Dave arrived. continued from p1......... Dave’s partner Robyn, who was unaware Dave was getting the award, told me Dave was on his way to the ceremony but such is his involvement in the community that he stopped on the way to see someone about some Landcare business.

He was a driving force in establishing the Bethanga Beehive which brought all the community groups together to apply for funding and develop a master plan for Bethanga.

Since Dave moved to Bethanga about 10 years ago he has thrown himself into the community.

He was one of the drivers in reactivating the Bethanga Landcare Group.

He is an active member of the Bethanga Action Group and worked with the Towong Shire on the upgrade of the Bethanga lookout and the removal of the feral plum trees around the town. He can often be seen working around the Bethanga Recreation Reserve slashing or doing other maintenance jobs. He helps out at the community events at the Recreation Reserve and is the key contact for the SR500 bike club that holds its annual rally at the reserve. He was the inaugural President of the Berringa CERT Committee and worked with Ambulance Victoria and the community to set up the CERT team. He gave up the president position to be become a CERT team member.

He is consulting with Telstra to install a mobile communications tower in Bethanga to improve mobile reception.

Dave seemed to be involved in every community event. All this was put on hold when in April last year he came off his quad bike without a helmet and suffered severe brain injuries. Fortunately for the community he is on the road to recovery. Medical advice was to scale back on his commitments but Dave has all but ignored this advice and is back doing many community activities. He sees his community roles as his rehabilitation program. He has been restricted in his activities because he could not drive but he was still at CERT training, The Bethanga Action Group Activities and slashing at the recreation reserve. Dave now has his licence back so he will be everywhere again. Congratulations Dave on the award and thank you for what you give to this community. Julie Miller

Talgarno Trivia Fun and Games Attendance on the night was estimated to be about 70 adults with a few kids running around. The profit for the night was a healthy $683.70 - thanks to all for supporting us so generously Congratulations to the winning table, “TNT” which was composed of locals Debbie Redman, Tim Nichols, Jacqui Gormly and others, they scored 51 points. Several games were played between the rounds including Heads or Tails, Last Person Standing, Mr Squiggle

and Throw a Coin at the Bottle. Kerrie Stephenson took home the goodies for the Last Person Standing (is caviar considered fish?) Michael Elliott won the bottle despite many others trying several times. The game Line’em up Charades, saw an ‘Actor’ and a ‘Guesser’ from each table attempt to act out the movie ‘The Shawshank Redemption’. It seemed impossible, but many laughs were had especially when several of the actors got down on their hands and knees and crawled through the sewerage 2

pipe from the prison to the creek! One person acted as a sheep for their partner to guess the “shank”. It was great fun and depicted a little lateral thinking. Kurt and Kellie Gibbons were the victors in this game. Matt and Jess Gray won the Mr Squiggle competition (see picture below) what a great effort.

The Old Wymah Ferry Makes its Own Way Home When the old Wymah Ferry was taken out of service in May 2013 the motor was removed and the hull left on blocks at the 80% level of the high water mark on the Victorian side.

No decision was made on its fate and the water continued to rise. On a very windy day in August the rising water lifted the old ferry off its blocks. It slowly headed towards the jetty but fortunately missed. It then took off across the Lake. The Ferry operator Mick Fabrik said it looked as though someone was steering it - maybe the ghost of Lorraine taking it home. It now sits below the high watermark on the NSW side. Lets hope the RTA gets around to dismantling it before the Lake refills this year and before the old ferry can make another ghostly journey. Julie Miller

Conic Rock, Local Beauty About 45 people attended the Wises Creek Talgarno Landcare Group Christmas celebration which was a bush tucker walk to Conic Rock. Conic Rock is a granite formation in the Mt Lawson National Park with spectacular views over the Koetong valley. Not many of the

locals had been there before but it is worth a visit. It is accessed from Firebrace Track off Granya Gap Road and it is an easy 1.5 km bush walk from the car park to Conic Rock. On the walk to the rock, Donna Mitsch, Cultural Heritage

Officer with the Department of Environment and Primary Industry, spoke about the aboriginal history of the area and pointed out the various plants and how the aboriginals used them. The Mt Lawson area has a rich

aboriginal heritage and there a number of cave paintings that show that aborigines inhabited this area for a long time. The aboriginal tribes that visited Conic Rock inhabited a wide area from the Murray River at Barmah to the Bogong High Plains. It

is thought that various groups would have spent time at Conic Rock in spring on their way to the high country and again on their return in early autumn.

The local plants provided food, medicines and tools for life. The tubers of orchids and yam daisies were eaten either raw or roasted in the ashes, the seeds of kangaroo grass were ground and used as flour and made into damper. Wattle seeds were boiled like peas. The mistletoe fruit was a favourite sweet. The leaves of Dianella and Lombarda were split and woven into baskets and mats. Native Sarsaparilla was made into a medicinal tea. The stems of the Nodding Blue Lily were crushed to apply to wounds to promote healing and the Hopbush roots were used on cuts, stings and toothaches. Bracken was rubbed onto insect bites. The roots of bracken are a carcinogen but were eaten if no other food was available.

The aborigines managed the environment to ensure that their food supply was sustained. They moved in small family groups of around 15 and left enough plants and animals in an area to ensure regeneration. They also carried out slow burns to encourage plant growth and attract animals.

The sap from the Grasstree and Native Pine were used as an

adhesive for spears and axes. The bullrush was a prized plant as its stems were used for spears, the leaves used to make strong string, the roots were eaten and used as an antiseptic. The burning leaves were used as an insect repellent. Eucalypts bark was used to make boats and shelter. They also caught and ate kangaroos, wallabies, birds and reptiles. PUB NEWS We hope everyone had a safe and Happy Christmas and New Year and for those lucky ones who were able to have a holiday, we hope you had a great one. Now that Christmas has come and gone we move into the cooler months - we hope and look forward to some welcome rain. Many of us have been affected by the long hot spell. Christmas lunch was well supported and a great night was had New Year. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our very talented local musicians for their ongoing support for our open music nights and other functions. We were saddened to hear the passing of “Caveman” Dave Chapman, a true gentleman and wonderful poet. Caveman also had a major input in the early renovations of the Hotel. Congratulations to another local, Kathy Slade in winning joker poker. What’s Happening At time of writing we have secured a regular run of fresh oysters from Cotham Bay to be delivered and sold at the Hotel . Watch for signs outside the Pub (seasonal of course) Although early, it is now time to think about the upcoming football season. Anyone is welcome to join in the footy tipping competition which will be starting in March/April. There is also a separate competition for juniors. Darts are held every Wednesday night- all welcome 7:30pm start.

them in shade cloth that really helped. Keeping your soil as cool and moist as you can is paramount during the heat.Longer deep watering compared to frequent shallow watering is much preferred by your plants and they will thank you by recovering much quicker when there are extremes in weather.

This year has started with a ‘bang’!!! My garden is well and truly ‘crispy’ at the moment and will take a while to recuperate. There are a few things we can do to try and protect our gardens from the heat, but nothing I’ve found to date is fool proof as I’m not sure anything can cope with the two heatwaves we have just experienced.

The hot winds were another matter as it stripped any moisture left in the plants away very quickly. I have quite a few plants with damage to them from the hot winds including my gorgeous kiwi fruit vines that look just awful. I am going to hold back from pruning any of the damaged plants until autumn is here even though the damage might look unsightly but it will still protect the plants from any further damage and if we get more heat the plants will go into shock. So when Autumn is really here I will prune and give all the plants a nice light feed of liquid fertiliser, some organic matter and TLC. Planting up your winter vegie garden is a matter of urgency. The season has made it difficult to get the winter vegies in, I’ve usually got mine in by mid February. I am madly getting all my broccoli, caulis, greens etc in over the next couple of weeks.

Using shade cloth and tougher plants to protect more fragile plants is good. I had shade cloth draped across my entire garden during the heatwaves - might not look fabulous but it certainly helped the plants get through. I had a lot of potted plants too that needed watering twice a day in that heat and I also draped

I have noticed that a few plants/trees have survived quite well in this heat including the gorgeous old Crepe Myrtles, lavenders, rosemary, and the Pyrus, which includes ‘Manchurian’ Pears, “capital” etc. And also our beautiful natives, including quite a few Grevilleas, acacias, and callistemons… Love to hear from anyone who can add to the list of plants that survived well over the heatwave…..?? Prospects for the Season Ahead

Thank you to Greg Hayes who has agreed to regularly contribute weather related articles for Berringa Community News readers.

Rainfall Round-up The summer rainfall (November to end January) was 107 mm, about 27% below average (147 mm) and 4% below the median (111 mm). The very low rainfall in November (10 mm) was the lowest since 2008 and this, on top of the dry October, made it a dry summer. December and January rainfalls were close to average.

Prospects for autumn (February through April)

The BOM forecast for summer was accurate for our district; they suggested a 50% chance of median rainfall of 111 mm and we received 107mm. They also predicted above average temperatures!

The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is also neutral and this climate driver does not have much impact on rainfall in summer and autumn.

The outlook for autumn is that rainfall is likely to be close to the median of 105 mm for the three months. The sea temperature conditions in the tropical Pacific that drive the SOI are still about average, as they have been for the past 18 months. They are expected to remain so for autumn, but some of the climate models are suggesting we may enter an El Niño period by early winter. There is no point in worrying too much about a possible El Niño at this stage of the year. Firstly, the models are not as accurate in forecasting at this time of the year in southern Australia. Secondly, not every El Niño results in below average rainfall. So let’s monitor the BOM ENSO reports over then next two months before taking action.

The total rainfall for 2013 was 587 mm compared to an average of 694 mm and a median of 689 mm. As shown in the graph, we had dry periods in early summer, early autumn and then in late spring and so overall the year was pretty ordinary – the driest since 2009.

Babies Congratulations to Jess and Matt Gray of Wises Creek Road Talgarno on the birth of their son Angus James on 23 February Congratulations to Steve and Emily McFarland (both ex-Bethanga residents) on the safe arrival of Esther Rose born on 23 February

The committee has been investigating the costs and possible grants associated with building an entry portico/verandah on the hall. The survey monkey response collected late last year resulted in majority votes for the verandah to extend across the front and down the sides to the storeroom and kitchen. The second highest number of votes was for a combined wrap around verandah/portico. Rough quotes were considered for both options, as well as other issues involved including: window positions, relocation of air conditioners, master plan, and possible need to change east and west access doors. It was decided that we would get firm quotes for the verandah/ portico option which would be built in a way that would allow for the verandah to be extended down the sides at a later date and as further funds could be allocated. Further improvements to be made include the kitchen splashback, sensor lighting, grounds around front of hall, and stage backdrop. Lea Casey, Secretary

WODONGA BRASS IN CONCERT Saturday 1st March Wodonga Brass came to Bethanga with 38 members to entertain us as a fundraiser for the hall and the band.. Brilliant selection of music performed by very talented musicians of all ages. MC Natalie in her bright, bubbly, cheeky way got everyone involved. Mark Hazee performed some great cover songs. Our own Peter Klein accompanied by Rowan from Eldorado sang some duets. Peter recited his poem about a Bethanga local who stopped at the pub after visiting the butcher, very amusing!. The talented Alison Hovar performed a medley of songs, what a beautiful voice and not too bad on dancing the “nut bush” either!

A most enjoyable evening was had by all with some amazing talent not to be missed if they come this way again. Graham Maynard

I hope you have been holding up ok thru this relentless heat that we have been having and that you are remembering to check on your elderly neighbours throughout the summer. However the recent cool days and evenings has been welcomed. Unfortunately with a few issues in the Peninsula area over the Christmas period, we need to remind ourselves that we do live in an age where there are a 'con-artists' or ‘fraudsters’ around who are eager to separate us from our money or household possessions. Neighbourhood Watch, with the encouragement of our local law enforcement, is about working together as families and neighbours to help improve the safety for everyone.       

Our first meeting for this year was hosted by the Granya community at the Granya Hall. Thanks to the Granya residents who hosted this meeting. The newly appointed Crime Prevention Officer and NHW Police liaison, Senior Constable James Donovan attended the meeting and talked of his role in Crime prevention in our region and his future work supporting NHW groups. Did you notice the new format for future NHW meetings? The next meeting will be held at the Bethanga Hall and your Peninsula Neighbourhood Watch will host a Sausage Sizzle at 6.00pm followed by the regular meeting, and it will be FREE. Just bring your own drinks and PNHW will provide the sausages, bread and sauce. It was considered this was an opportunity to enjoy a sausage sizzle, catch up with your neighbours and continue to be part of how we keep our community a safe place to live. We will continue this format for the Talgarno meeting and next year’s Granya meeting, however the Bellbridge Christmas meeting will remain our chicken, salad and sweets dinner meeting.......We will appreciate your feedback on our new format. Please bring your family and neighbours and you don’t need to feel obligated to stay for the meeting. The condition of the Pines Road and Riverina Highway remain unsatisfactory even though there has been some substantial work completed. Please keep writing to both State (NSW and VIC) and Federal politicians re the need to invest into the safety of these roads. Peninsula Police Report S/Constable James Donovan presented the Crime report for this meeting on behalf of LSC Nev Barrow. I hope all enjoyed a happy Christmas and celebrated the New Year well. 12/11/13 Report of Criminal Damage, Lake Hume Boat Club. Value $100.00. Suspect interviewed and charged. 18/11/13 Report of Theft, Sirls Rd, Jarvis Creek. Value $600.00. Suspect interviewed. 16/12/13 Report of Aggravated Burglary 2.00am, 4 thefts from Motor Vehicles and 2 theft from boats reported pm 16/12/13 from several streets in the township of Bellbridge. Collective value is $1259.00. Some property was recovered during the day of 16/12/13. 4 suspects identified and charges are pending. 19/01/14 Report of Fire, Webb’s Lane, Granya. Private property burned - Farm machinery being operated in grassed paddock in "severe" weather conditions. Further investigation is pending with the land owner. From a local police point of view the Bellbridge crime spree in December was disappointing. It was evident that if vehicles and houses were secured none of these offences may have been committed. The suspects were targeting soft targets and no sign of forced entry was used in the commission of any of these offences. Due to the information from persons within the Bellbridge community and the joint investigation undertaken by the Wodonga Criminal Investigation Unit it was pleasing to be able to have the suspects identified in a very short time frame. A few things to be mindful of. Bellbridge residents were advised after the incidents on 16/12/13 and to secure all parked vehicles and remove property from boats parked unsecured on front lawns/roads. Thanks to Belinda Fletcher, Bellbridge Lake Hume Store for assisting in spreading the news. Motor vehicle owners in the township of Bellbridge are to ensure that when parking vehicles outside their address that they park in the correct lawful manner. That is, on the correct side of the road facing the correct direction. If there is a collision with an incorrectly parked vehicle it may mean that any motor vehicle insurances held may be void. Also be mindful that emergency vehicle access could be minimised if 2 vehicles are parked adjacent to each other in the same street. To one and all- Please take care on our roads when driving particularly now school has resumed. Drivers please pay attention and adhere to the 40kmh speed limit in Beardmore Street outside the Bethanga Primary School. Also please show some caution and be patient with our school bus drivers when driving at school drop off and pick up times.

The Annual Wood Raffle is on again. Thanks to numerous people there will be another generous load of wood raffled this year. Please support this raffle as this is the only fund raising event your local Neighbourhood Watch group run. CLUBS AND GROUPS BERRINGA CERT CERT had a busy period leading up to Christmas but since then it has been quiet, despite the heatwave conditions. The city ambulances were very busy with heat related emergencies but it seems that our community has coped better. Unfortunately due to a fall in team numbers we are currently not able to fully cover 24 hours seven days per week. The team does as much as they can but we are regularly forced to go “offline” for up to 48 hours per week. We would love to hear from anyone who would like to be involved in our team of fabulous motivated people. It is a great way to be involved in the community and also to receive quality initial and ongoing training in first aid through Ambulance Victoria, leading to TAFE qualifications. BETHANGA ACTION GROUP Well once again we have had a very hot summer, we hope everyone was able to keep cool and we will be looking forward to enjoying our cooler autumn days. The Action Group continues to work on improvements in the community; you may have noticed the new CAUTION signs near the Bus Stop in Bellbridge. We requested these signs at the end of last year and were pleased to see them go up at the start of school term. We do need to be aware of the school children crossing the road to the Bus Stop at Bellbridge and Bethanga and of course in all areas. We still have our Suggestion Box at the Bethanga Store and welcome any suggestions which we will endeavour to carry out. Once again this year there will be an ANZAC Day ceremony on Friday 25 April at the Bethanga Soldiers Memorial Hall and we invite you all to come along and join us. The service is followed by morning tea and all are welcome. The Action Group are pleased to announce that we have another Albury Wodonga Theatre Company production coming out to the Bethanga Hall on Friday 9 May. It is always better to call sooner rather than later for any emergency, and at the moment the CERT team may not be able to respond to all calls. It is always better to get medical help in an emergency than to take someone into hospital yourself for there is little you can do for someone in pain or in a deteriorating condition if you are trying to drive a car. You can also be distracted and anxious, leading to a greatly increased risk of having a road accident yourself.

BETHANGA TENNIS Children’s Tennis Lessons Margaret Court Tennis Academy (Rural) delivers children’s tennis lessons on Friday afternoons during school term at the Bethanga Tennis Courts, Bethanga Recreation Reserve.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Men’s Shed or just wish to come along for a chat once in a while, please come along on a Wednesday and get to know us all.

Lessons recommenced in Term 1 2014. Classes are open to all ages and abilities; they are of 45 minutes duration and contain four students per group. The cost is $10 per child per 45 minute lesson and siblings $5 per lesson.

The Shed is located at the old Council Depot in Bethanga and is open every Wednesday from 9:00 am.

Great to see some tennis at the Recreation Reserve with kids and the parents involved in lessons and a bit of fun after school. The Cricket Club has done a wonderful job on the practice nets on the old netball court. I feel they are doing all the right things running coaching clinics at the primary school last year. Do I hear second - OK I’m not sure if that was A or B grade in the Cricket competition as of a couple of weeks ago. Could be a public stoning next time I go down there! Easter is only just around the corner so it will not be long before the Gymkhana is on again. I’m sure Mary Northey and her band of helpers would love help, if anyone wants to volunteer. The gymkhana is a wonderful day for all. We have accepted another football match for 21 April this year. We had a wet area behind pavilion that was fixed by Scott Carole plumbing just before the motor bike weekend. An old rubble pit used to take the water had become blocked. The repairs will help on major days such as football etc. into the future. A few actions that are taking place: 1. There have been some comments about not being able to walk or ride around the bottom part of the oval due to fencing cutting it off. This was put up for some horses in a hurry. We have agreed to remove it and it will be done ASAP. 2. As most people around the area are aware there will be some road works between 3 and 7 March on Kurrajong Gap on the lookout-weir side to remove some blind corners and to make it safer for all, including the school bus. The Shire is using some of the rock and soil they remove for some road shoulder works and is going to put some down at the Recreation Reserve to help fill some hollows to make it more usable in the long term. I have asked the NE Catchment

Management Authority if we could use some rock in four or so areas to stabilize some banks in the creek Landcare plantation areas. I thought this would be a good win-win for all - for the Recreation Reserve to stabilize these areas and reduce expenditure in the future on erosion control works and the Shire save on waste earthwork materials. 3. I have asked the Shire for some help on some waste issues that keep occurring on the path. Garden pruning and the associated waste dumping create recurring management issue and cost. TALGARNO CFA It’s been a busy start to the year for the brigade with nine callouts, nearly all of which have been to fires outside our district. Our members have responded quickly and well to these fires. In addition, three of our members have joined strike teams dealing with the Wallan fires. It is pleasing to see there have been very few fires resulting from private burns getting out of control. The brigade continues to hold training days and will soon be arranging induction training for new members.

Berringa Kindergarten visit In mid-December last year, the brigade was invited to visit the Berringa Kindergarten at Bellbridge. We talked with the children about good fires/bad fires, what to do if you see a fire and how to ring 000 in an emergency. We were pleasantly surprised on their knowledge of what to do in case of an emergency and practically demonstrated to us how to ring 000. The children then enjoyed giving the truck a good check over to make sure everything worked as it should. Finally the children dressed up in uniforms and used the hose to put out the big tree that (we pretended) was on fire. Thank you to the staff and children for an enjoyable visit and we hope to see you again next year or on the fire ground in around 15 years. 4WD Camping Show On the 14 to 16 February around 36 members of the Bethanga and Talgarno brigades, Berringa CERT and Bethanga Cricket Club joined forces to do the car parking at the 4WD Camping Show. We received $1300 for our work, which will be split between the groups. Brigade Training Now that the fire season is winding down, the brigade will be getting

back to our monthly training. If you see us training, stop by to watch or join in. Get ready for Autumn/Winter Although we have been busy this summer, we have not had any fires in our brigade area. Well done to everyone for being fire conscious and keep up the good work. It won’t be too much longer and it will be time to start thinking about cleaning flue’s, checking your heaters and electric blankets and testing your smoke alarms for the upcoming cooler months. Fire Danger Period When the official fire danger period ends and people relax a bit, we sometimes have an increase in the number of callouts to out-of-control burns. Please remain fire conscious and take all necessary precautions to avoid loss from fire. Fire Ready app If you have a smart phone it is a good idea to download the CFA Fire ready app. In this app you can set up a zone to receive notifications of incidents in that area. It will also detail state wide fire danger ratings and incidents. The same information can be accessed on your computer at: CFA Fires, Incidents and warnings. This info keeps you up to date with

Bethanga Siren The Bethanga siren sounds automatically for 2 Minutes every time we receive an emergency call out. This applies for call outs in our brigade area and neighbouring brigade’s areas. Its function is to alert members to man the trucks. Although the siren is not a community warning device it would be sensible to have a look around for any danger when you hear the siren. ROTARY CLUB OF BELLBRIDGE LAKE HUME Christmas Celebrations The club conducted its annual Christmas Carols on Sunday 8 December at the Hume Boat Club Bellbridge commencing at 6:30pm. On a favourable night weatherwise,

the large number of families that attended enjoyed the carols, the BBQ sausages and drinks. Santa arrived about 7:45pm and gave out lolly bags and mighty ho-hos. Everybody who attended enjoyed themselves and joined in singing carols. Australia Day Celebrations The club, in conjunction with Towong Council, conducted the 2014 Australia Day celebrations at the Berringa Community Centre, Bellbridge. After a hearty breakfast, the official ceremonies commenced with the raising of the flag by the Naval cadets.

The guest speaker was Mr Richard Rozen OAM. Richard outlined his experience as a young person in the Second World War such as living in a cupboard in a farmhouse cellar for 13 months to escape the Nazis. After eventually being caught he was transported to the Lublin ghetto and the Treblinka extermination camp. Partisans then smuggled them into a forest where they lived for about 18 months. Eventually he and his mother migrated to Australia in 1951 as displaced persons. He is one of more than 45,000 Jewish Victorians and almost 100, 000 Australians affiliated with Judaism. He spoke about multi-culturalism and that

Australia embraces different religions and culture very well. Richard founded the St. Kilda Chess Club, established a small business and represented Australia in the World Bridge Championships in 1982. His war time experiences have been highlighted in two novels and included in the Book of Life. He is married to Rysia and they have two sons. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1997 for his services to chess, bridge and the community. David Elder from Bethanga was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by Mr Rozen for his numerous community activities over the last 10 years. They included membership of the Bethanga Action Group, work around town on a number of projects, Berringa CERT Committee, Bethanga Landcare group and other community groups. He appears to be recovering well from a serious quad bike accident he was involved in last year. Christmas in July Celebrations

Our enthusiastic coaches will put the players through their paces practicing a few new skills, improving on existing ones, playing a game or two and having a good run around. Parents are encouraged to get involved either on the field, on the sidelines or helping in the canteen. Or you could just get yourself a coffee from the canteen and take in the spectacle that is Saturday morning junior football. LHSC is a small club and we do not field any teams in the Albury Wodonga Football Association competition so all our games are home games! The club is affiliated with the Football Federation of Victoria and all Lake Hume Soccer Club players are required to be registered. Last year this was $45 per player plus ball fees of $1 per week. to that we all had some beautiful weather and managed to play some great tennis. Our kids playing Section 4 had a great season finishing in fifth place, only one place out of the finals and have improved significantly on last year. Many of this team also played in the junior tournament held at Tallangatta in early February and had a great time. The Section 1 team ended up on top of the ladder and has made it into the Grand Final after beating Gundowring North. They will play Sandy Creek in the Grand Final which is to be held at Talgarno Tennis Courts on 1 March. Section 2 finished in second place on the ladder, but went down to the Georges Creek Yabbies in the Semi Final by one set. So Georges Creek Yabbies will play Tangambalanga also on March 1 at Talgarno. Mrs Robyn Gillis CEO of the Tallangatta Health Service opened the Conference and spoke on the wonderful work they are doing in the aged care sector - home care, meals on wheels, home nursing for those just out of hospital and respite care to name a few. The Branch Secretaries reports were read and the Harris Mitchell Trophy for the best report went to Chloris Kohlman of the Cudgewa Branch, congratulations Chloris. The Craft Officer gave her report – the next craft day for the Group will be held on the Tuesday 6 May. Crafts will include fabric dying, needle felting and advanced crochet. If there is anything that anyone would like to learn please let Janet know. This day is not just for CWA members but for all who are interested in craft. Native grasses trial sites established at Talgarno

Well managed native pastures provide a range of agricultural benefits. They are naturally drought tolerant, provide livestock feed, require fewer input costs and assist in controlling soil erosion, salinity and acidity.

Native grasses also provide environmental services such as increased biodiversity, carbon storage, nutrient cycling and regulate water flow. “Using Fire as a Tool for Managing Native Grasses: An Indigenous Perspective” is a project partnership between the North East Catchment Management Authority and Kiewa Catchment Landcare Groups. Funding was obtained under the Caring for our Country Sustainable Environment and Agriculture stream.

In January, ecologist Paul Foreman assessed the number and type of species at each site. Eightyone different plants species were identified across the three sites, 40 of which were native species. The most abundant exotic species across all sites was flat weed (Hypochaeris radicata) and the most abundant native species were wallaby grass (Rytidosperma racemosum) and weeping grass (Microlaena stipoides). The sites will be burnt in May (after the autumn break), using cool mosaic burns and the plots will be reassessed in spring. Tissue samples will also be taken between plots to determine any nutritional differences between treatments.

The project also partners with Indigenous Knowledge holders to gain an understanding of Traditional Ecological Knowledge and how this can be applied to native pastures/grasses management. In 2014, three trial sites were established in NE Victoria, two of which are in Talgarno, (at Greg Hayes property and Rhonda Sinclair and Hugh Dunchue’s property). The Talgarno sites involve several treatments, grazed and ungrazed (one site has sheep, the other cattle), burnt and unburnt.

It is also anticipated that the project will have a longer term impact in terms of improved Grassland/ Woodlands management through the use of firebased Traditional Ecological Knowledge. Bethanga Landcare Group SUCCESSFUL FUNDING BID FOR BETHANGA LANDCARE! Bethanga Landcare Group (BLG) welcomed the New Year with the exciting news that we were successful in our application for funding of our 2014 projects! These projects will include the continuation of our highly successful tree planting day, bus tours of successful Landcare sites, community frog surveys and spotlighting for native mammals. All of our projects will focus on increasing connectivity and knowledge of Bethanga’s Grassy Box Woodlands. Grassy Box Woodlands are the vegetation type naturally found in Bethanga. As well as being beautiful, these iconic woodlands provide shelter for stock, help manage erosion and are important habitat to an array of local wildlife from gang gang cockatoos to sugar gliders. BLG will continue planting trees and shrubs in these woodlands to increase landscape connectivity and to maintain the productivity and habitat value of Bethanga’s bushland. Plant species that we’ll continue to use include: eucalypts, acacias and other species endemic to Bethanga. Following on from the success of the 2013 National Tree Day plantings near Kurrajong Gap lookout, BLG will focus its 2014 planting efforts on a site in Rowely Lane. This new focus is an exciting development for our group, as we transition from planting on Parks Victoria land to working directly with Bethanga landholders to

actively manage vegetation on their own land. As a follow up to the enthusiastic response from last year’s seedling give away, BLG would like to invite community members on a bus tour of local properties, to visit project sites that were successfully planted. A BBQ lunch will be included and the tour will be an opportunity to meet new people, ask questions and get ideas for your own property. A community frog survey is planned for later in the year, as is a spotlighting evening with local ecologists and community members. BLG held its last meeting in the Bethanga Community Hall at 7:30 pm on 5 February. We were visited by Kelly Behrens, Regional Landcare Facilitator for the North East CMA. Kelly told the group about other projects in the North East region. Kelly also explained that her role as a Regional Landcare Facilitator is to provide support to Landcare groups, including assistance with funding applications, organising training and engaging with other Landcare groups. It was great to have Kelly attend our meeting and we have no doubt that we will call on her for assistance in the future. BLG will hold its next meeting on Wednesday 7 May at 7:30 pm in the Bethanga Community Hall. The meeting will include a presentation from guest, Trevor Danger. Trevor is the Local Landcare Facilitator for the Ovens Landcare Network and has trialed a number of biological controls for Broom, Bridal Creeper and Gorse throughout the Ovens area. Trevor will be sharing his experiences with these weeds. The year has begun with the children developing their sense of identity through activities that encourage co operative play, discussions about their families, and participating in group discussions. Our new belonging tree ( purchased with Council funds) looks great covered with decorations and photos of each child. A special highlight has been the visit of two ducklings in a cage for the morning. The children have been using their senses to explore the properties of water, which the staff provided in the form of ice and coloured water. Recently, the educator from North East Water visited to talk about the water cycle and ways to save water. This visit was very entertaining, as she used dress ups, fun songs and pictures. In the next few weeks, the children and staff will be planning for, and creating art work to be displayed at the Bethanga Gymkhana at Easter. We hope you will enjoy looking at our work! Chelsea is planning to take our senior choir to the Eisteddfod in Albury and we are incredibly excited by this. Students have enjoyed a well-earned break over the holidays and have returned to school ready for learning. Mrs McGuffie has welcomed students back with Mrs Toohey, who works Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. In the classroom this term our topic is ‘Happy healthy humans’. We are exploring the human body and its functions, such as bones, organs, muscles and the five senses. The students are very interested in learning about healthy eating and leading active lives. The students are also taking part in science lessons once a week and are thoroughly enjoying them. They have investigated the effect of water on paper, how butterflies feed and the aerodynamics of a paper plane. We are continuing our fortnightly visits to Bethanga Primary to join in their classes and MARC van lessons. It is a great opportunity for students from both schools to form friendships and interact together.

The polycom will be very well used this year through shared news, debates and sharing our writing pieces with other cluster schools. We are very excited to tap into the activities available on the polycom and explore the world around us (The Great Barrier Reef and NASA). This wonderful technology allows us greater access to further social interaction and rich learning opportunities. Our wonderful music program is in full swing with Mrs Potter teaching our very talented musicians all year. The students are learning various instruments such as, the recorder, clarinet and bass guitar. After wowing the audience with their performances at the end of year celebration, the students and Mrs Potter are ready to take it to the next level for this year’s concert. Indonesian has also commenced and we welcome back Ms Boyer every second Wednesday for

the year. The students are becoming very fluent in Indonesian and after mastering the colours, numbers and greetings they have moved on to learning body parts and more about the Indonesian culture.
