Putting Members First:
SeaComm’s Commitment to Service, Security and Community By Lylah Wright, Vermont Maturity
For many people, choosing a financial institution is about more than finding a place to deposit a paycheck or apply for a loan. It is about finding a trusted partner— one that listens, provides guidance and understands that every member’s financial journey is different. That philosophy is at the heart of SeaComm, a credit union dedicated to providing personalized financial services while remaining deeply connected to the communities it serves. Unlike a traditional financial institution, SeaComm’s customers are members. That distinction is more than a title; it reflects a different approach to the relationship between the institution and the people who walk through its doors. “At SeaComm, you are more than just a customer to us—you are our member,” President and Chief Executive 6 | September/October 2026 | VermontMaturity.com
Officer Scott A. Wilson explains. Through its Service Promises, SeaComm emphasizes a commitment to going above and beyond to help members with their accounts, loans and other financial needs.
Service That Puts People First In an increasingly digital financial world, personal service can sometimes feel like a thing of the past. SeaComm believes it remains just as important as ever. The credit union describes its approach as “good old fashioned customer service,” with a focus on creating a welcoming, patient and personalized experience at its branches. For SeaComm, that commitment means making sure members feel valued and that their individual needs
are being met. At a time when financial institutions are frequently changing names, merging or restructuring, SeaComm says it remains focused on the principles that have always guided its service. That personal approach extends to lending, as well. SeaComm says its members are more than a credit score. When making lending decisions, the credit union looks at the whole financial picture and works to provide competitive options.
Helping Protect Against Financial Fraud Financial scams have become an increasingly serious concern, particularly for older adults who may be targeted by sophisticated schemes designed to steal their savings. SeaComm has made educating the community about fraud prevention a priority. The credit union is willing to travel to groups and locations across the state to provide presentations about current scams, explain how scammers operate and offer practical steps people can take to protect themselves. The message is simple but important: preventing financial fraud requires awareness and cooperation.
SeaComm believes everyone has a role to play in protecting seniors and their hard-earned money. By bringing fraud-prevention education directly into communities, the credit union hopes to give people the knowledge and confidence they need to recognize warning signs before it is too late.
Financial Products Designed for Members SeaComm offers a broad range of financial products, including checking and savings accounts, loans, mortgages, investment services and credit cards. Its checking and savings accounts are a cornerstone of the credit union’s offerings. Because SeaComm operates for the benefit of its members rather than shareholders, it says it is able to return profits to members through competitive rates and fewer fees. Members can also take advantage of additional programs, including savings opportunities as well as credit-report and identity-theft monitoring and insurance programs. The credit union also offers a competitive rewards credit card with a low interest rate, providing another option for members looking for flexibility in their everyday finances. SeaComm’s commitment to financial education begins early. Its Moola Moola Children’s Savings Account program is designed to make saving money fun while helping children develop healthy financial habits. Young members receive fun gifts when they open an account and have opportunities to win prizes, gift cards and money based on their report cards. They also receive a free subscription to SeaComm’s award-winning children’s newsletter, which is mailed four times a year. For grandparents, parents and other family members looking for ways to introduce children to the importance of saving, the program provides an opportunity to make financial education a positive and rewarding experience. The goal is to help children understand that small steps toward saving can become lifelong habits.
Giving Back to the Community SeaComm’s commitment to its members extends beyond financial services. The credit union also believes strongly in giving back to the communities it serves. One example is its $50,000 contribution to Hope Lodge, supporting a facility that provides a comfortable and welcoming place for people fighting cancer. Community involvement is part of SeaComm’s broader philosophy: being a financial institution means being part of the community itself.
A Different Kind of Financial Relationship Whether helping someone establish a first savings account, purchase a home, secure a loan, plan for the future or recognize a potential scam, SeaComm’s approach centers on relationships. Its philosophy is built around treating people as individuals—not simply account numbers or credit scores.
For those looking for a financial institution that combines a broad range of products with personal attention, community involvement and an emphasis on financial security, SeaComm offers an approach rooted in a simple idea: members should feel valued, supported and protected. In a financial landscape that continues to change, SeaComm remains committed to the personal connection that has long defined the credit union experience. VM

25 Years of Caring
Dr. Thierry Bonnabesse and the Art of Pain Management By Patrick Kincaid, Vermont Maturity Correspondent
10 | September/October 2026 | VermontMaturity.com
There is a very old saying that nurses and doctors are angels in disguise. In this case, Dr. Thierry Bonnabesse is the epitome of that metaphor. Having devoted the past 25 years to the treatment of pain, Dr. Bonnabesse has helped thousands of patients regain function and improve their quality of life. Raised in France, Dr. Bonnabesse came to the United States in 1987. When asked how he ended up in Vermont, Dr. Bonnabesse replied, “Life brought me to Vermont in 1987, and I quickly fell in love with the state. I completed

Over time, I have learned something important. It is something that resonates with Vermonters of all ages, especially those of us who understand how easy it is to slow down as the seasons change. The answer is always yes. Buy the pass. Not because you will ski every weekend. Not because you are chasing vertical feet or powder days. You buy the pass because it is a commitment. Connors’ inspiring three simple words leap from the soundtrack.
Carol co-wrote the lyrics with Ayn Robbins, while the music was scored by now veteran composer Bill Conti. The three had the same agent who informed the trio of “a little film about a boxer” that needed a theme song. After watching a rough cut of the partially scored film, everyone in the viewing room knew a more powerful theme was needed and “Gonna Fly Now” was born. The upfront payment of $500 for Carol’s contribution didn’t go far in the late-70s, but royalty checks soon began arriving and continue to this day whenever the

movie airs or the song plays. “The entire music budget for the film was $18,000,” she recalls. “You couldn’t write four notes of a movie theme for that today.” Connors recalls Conti arriving at her house after the screening, sitting at her piano, and belting out the Rocky melody. “After he left, I remember thinking how could anyone write words to that music?” she said. “I went into the shower, and the film and training scene were still fresh in my mind. I pictured Rocky reaching the top of those stairs and thought, oh my God, he could even fly now. So that’s where ‘Gonna Fly Now’ came from.” With cowriter Robbins, the pair constructed an entire song but the director (John Avildsen) only used 30 words, basically three short verses in the final score. “It begins with ‘trying hard now’ then ‘getting strong now’ and the final verse ‘gonna fly now,’ so three movements each one upping the ante until Rocky reaches the top of the stairs and knows he can go the distance,” explained Connors.

Nominated for Best Original Song at the 49th Academy Awards, Connors attended the ceremony and was seated next to veteran film scorer Henry Mancini, himself a four-time Oscar winner. As “Rocky” began winning awards, Mancini leaned in with encouraging words, at least initially. “He said to me, ‘You’re going to win the Oscar!’” she recalled. “Then Barbara Streisand got up and sang Evergreen (from ‘A Star is Born’) and he said to me, ‘I don’t know how to tell you this Carol, but you just lost the Oscar.’ And we did, but it was an honor to be recognized for my work on the film.” The following year, Connors and Robbins received a second Oscar nomination for writing lyrics to Sammy Fain’s “Someone’s Waiting For You” melody for Disney’s animated feature, “The Rescuers.” Two decades earlier, Carol was recognized with a gold record for selling over 2.5 million copies of the massive 1958 hit “To Know Him Is to Love Him” as lead singer of The Teddy Bears. The song was one of the first written by legendary record producer Phil Spector, who also performed with the group before it quickly disbanded. In addition to composing songs for numerous other film and TV projects, another musical career highlight was writing the music and lyrics, with a little help from brother Marshall, to “Hey Little Cobra” recorded by The Rip Chords. Cashing in on the racing car culture of the 60s, the song became a Top 5 hit in 1963.

Details of Connors’ career were published in her 2024 autobiography “Elvis, Rocky and Me” coauthored with Steve Bergsman (Carol dated Elvis for several months in the 60s, see her website, www.carolconnors. com). Based on the book, the documentary film “Elvis, Rocky & Me: The Carol Connors Story” was released early 2026. The film won numerous film festival awards while the audio book, narrated by Kathy Garver, was nominated for a Grammy for the Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording, losing out to no less an author than the Dalai Lama. Turning 85 later this year, Carol Connors continues to write music that still packs a punch and even occasionally belts out a tune, continuing to inspire others – just like Rocky. “Music has been my life,” she says. “I’m glad I could share it.” VM Nick Thomas teaches at Auburn University at Montgomery, Ala., and has written features, columns, and interviews for numerous magazines and newspapers.
