A tradition of coming together LEE, MA — For three days each September, Lee becomes a little busier, a little louder and a lot more connected. Main Street fills with people. The parade makes its way through town. Music carries across the parks, fireworks light up the sky and familiar faces seem to appear everywhere. For residents, Founders Weekend is an annual tradition. For visitors, it is an invitation to experience Lee at its most communal. For Alexandra Heddinger, executive director of the Lee Chamber of Commerce, the weekend is also a way to watch those traditions move from one generation to the next. She has attended Founders Weekend for more than 25 years. When her sons were young, she watched the parade with friends and their families. Later, she watched those same boys participate with the marching band. Now she helps organize the weekend herself. “It’s really special to see another generation of kids enjoying the same traditions,” Heddinger says. Held Sept. 18 – 20 this year, the celebration brings together Lee’s history, local businesses and community organizations through a weekend with something happening around nearly every corner. That connection to local businesses has been part of the celebration from the beginning. Founders Weekend grew out of an annual event called Lee Sale-abration, which began more than 45 years ago as a way to bring peo-
ple into town and encourage them to shop and dine locally. What started as a community event built around “food, fun and games” eventually grew into the three-day celebration Lee has today. That original idea is still easy to see. Friday’s Taste of Lee brings food and music to Main Street before fireworks at 8 p.m. Saturday features the Wildcat Main Street Mile and Founders Hometown Parade, followed by vendors, performances and family activities. Sunday concludes with the Dog Parade, Cornhole Tournament and annual Rubber Duck Race on the Housatonic River. New this year, the Lee Youth Commission is introducing its first Kid-Led Popup Market. More than 40 Berkshire kids ages 5–18 have signed up, including 15 from Lee, to sell handmade items ranging from jewelry and woodworking to paintings, crocheted toys, comics, clay figures, bath products and lemonade. The newly completed NinjaFit Playground offers another place for generations to come together. Berkshire County’s first outdoor American Ninja Warrior-inspired obstacle course is designed for youth, teens, adults and families, creating a shared space where people can try something new together. The Family Fun Zone is expanding this year, while local businesses have increased their involvement through expanded sponsorship opportunities. Businesses are helping make the week-

end happen while also giving visitors more reasons to spend time downtown. For Heddinger, that willingness to contribute is one of the things that makes the weekend work. Behind every event are people organizing, volunteering, sponsoring, performing, cooking, setting up and cleaning up. Phil Smith has been contributing to Lee for years. Named the 2026 Parade Marshal, Smith has spent nearly two decades involved with the Lee Chamber and local historical and civic organizations, supporting businesses, welcoming visitors and helping preserve the town’s history. “It has been a pleasure to work with so many wonderful people building a strong sense of community in our adopted home town of Lee,” Smith says. That sense of community has deep roots.
Lee was incorporated in 1777 and grew alongside the Housatonic River, where water power helped establish paper mills, marble quarries and other industries that shaped the town for generations. Founders Weekend carries that history forward, bringing people downtown to celebrate Lee while supporting the businesses that remain part of its community. That connection will become even more significant in 2027, when Lee marks its 250th anniversary on Oct. 21. Planning is already underway, giving the town a chance to reflect on its past while looking ahead. The traditions may change, but the idea remains: bringing people together, supporting the community and giving Lee something to celebrate.

Catch a glimpse of American history at these historic trust sites America's semiquincentennial marks a great time to explore 250 years of United States history. There's no shortage of ways to engage with American history, which has been well documented in books, films, magazines, websites, and more. Visiting a historic preservation site is another way to experience American history. The National Trust for Historic Preservation was founded more than 75 years ago as a means to preserving places that tell a story about America's history as well as the history of the land that predates the formation of the United States. Many such places exist across the United States, and the following are some those interested in engaging with American history can visit. Fioli, Woodside, California: This estate situated on the unceded ancestral lands of the Ramaytush Ohlone serves as a community cultural center featuring 654 acres of stunning landscape. The National Trust notes the estate was originally built as a private residence in 1917 but was opened to the public in
1975. The site features 16 acres of English Renaissance gardens, a roughly seven-acre orchard, and a nature preserve with eight miles of hiking trails. Acoma Sky City, Pueblo of Acoma, New Mexico: The National Trust notes Acoma Sky City is the oldest continuously inhabited community in the United States. A tour of Sky city may include a visit to San Esteban del Rey, a seventeenth century church. Visitors also may view pueblo dwellings located along the 367-foot-tall mesa that's been inhabited for nearly 1,000 years. Brucemore, Cedar Rapids, Iowa: Iowa's only National Trust site is among the most significant cultural landscapes in the midwestern United States. Brucemore was constructed in the late nineteenth century and is a must-see locale for anyone interested in the stories of industrialists, artisans, architects, and others during a point in American history that has become synonymous with innovation. Visitors to Brucemore can explore the 26-acre estate and some of its more unique and notable features,
including the Tahitian Room and Grizzly Bar added to the estate when Margaret and Howard Hall, the last residents of the mansion at Brucemore, called the grounds home. The Shadows, New Iberia, Louisiana: The Shadows was built nearly 200 years ago along the banks of the Bayou Teche. More than 200 men, women and children were enslaved at this site before the start of the American Civil War, and a visit to the site today provides a balanced and nuanced take on what life on a sugar cane plantation was like for property owners and enslaved individuals. A trunk in the attic of the property preserved thousands of letters, photographs, and receipts, which are continuously researched and utilized to provide unique insight into a much-studied period in American history. These are just a handful of the many historic sites across the United States that can provide an invaluable glimpse into American history. TF265835

Attorney General’s Notice Pursuant to G.L. c. 40, § 32 Town of Stockbridge -- Case No. 12313 Annual Town Meeting of May 18, 2026 Article # 8 Attorney General's Limited Authority to Waive Procedural Defects in the Notice of the Planning Board Hearing Pursuant to the provisions of G.L. c. 40, § 32, if the Attorney General finds there to be any defect in the procedure of adoption or amendment of any zoning by-law relating to the form or content of the notice of the Planning Board hearing prescribed by G.L. c. 40A, § 5, or to the manner or dates on which said notice is mailed, posted or published as required by that section, then instead of disapproving the by-law or amendment by reason of any such defect, the Attorney General may elect to proceed under the defect waiver provisions of G.L. c. 40, § 32. Under those provisions, the Attorney General is conditionally authorized to waive any such defect. Defect Determined in Notice of Planning Board Hearing The Attorney General has determined that the planning board hearing notice relating to the above Article failed to comply with the notice requirements for such hearing established by G.L. c. 40A, § 5. Section 5 provides in part (with emphasis added): No zoning…by-law or amendment thereto shall be adopted until after the planning board in a…town has…held a public hearing thereon…at which interested persons shall be given an opportunity to be heard…. Notice of the time and place of such hearing, of the subject matter, sufficient for identification, and of the place where texts and maps thereof may be inspected shall be published in a newspaper of general circulation in the…town once in each of two successive weeks, the first publication to be not less than fourteen days before the day of said hearing, and by posting such notice in a conspicuous place in the…town hall for a period of not less than fourteen days before the day of said hearing. Notice of said hearing shall also be sent by mail, postage prepaid to the executive office of housing and livable communities, the regional planning agency, if any, and to the planning board of each abutting city and town.…In cases involving boundary, density or use changes within a district, notice shall be sent to any such nonresident property owner who has filed such a request with the city or town clerk and whose property lies in the district where the change is sought.
Based on the materials submitted to this Office, we have identified the following defect: the notice of the Planning Board hearing posted in the Town Hall and published in a newspaper of general circulation did not include information regarding where the text (and map if any) of the by-law amendment may be inspected, as required by G.L. c. 40A, § 5. For this reason, the 90-day period prescribed for the Attorney General’s review of Article 8 is suspended in accordance with G.L. c. 40, § 32. Attorney General's Election to Proceed Under the Waiver Provisions of G.L. c. 40, § 32 The Attorney General has elected to proceed under the limited defect waiver authority conferred by G.L. c. 40, § 32. Suspension of Review of Zoning By-Law Amendments The 90-day period prescribed by law for the Attorney General's review of local by-laws is therefore suspended in accordance with the provisions of G.L. c. 40, § 32. Posting and Publication of This Notice The Town Clerk shall post a true copy of this Notice in a conspicuous place in the Stockbridge Town Hall for a period of not less than 14 days and shall publish a copy once in a newspaper of general circulation in the Town of Stockbridge. Filing of Claim That Defect in Notice Was Misleading or Otherwise Prejudicial Within 21 days of the date on which this Notice is published in a newspaper of general circulation in the Town of Stockbridge, any resident of the Town of Stockbridge, or the owner of any real property in the Town of Stockbridge or any other party entitled to notice of the planning board hearing may file with the Town Clerk a written statement that the notice defect was misleading or otherwise prejudicial. The statement must include the reasons supporting the claim that the defect in the Planning Board Notice was misleading or otherwise prejudicial. This statement must be actually on file with the Town Clerk not later than 21 days from the date on which this Notice is published in the newspaper. Town Clerk's Certification of Compliance with This Notice After the expiration of the 21-day period, the Town Clerk shall submit to the Attorney General a true copy of this Notice with a certification of compliance with the publishing and posting requirements of the preceding paragraph, and a certification that either (a) no claim was filed within the 21-day period, or (b) one or more claims were filed within the 21-day period. The Town Clerk shall submit to the Attorney General true copies of any such claim(s).
