This stoic, yet happy fellow is Morty. Morty is a 9-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier mix. He arrived back at Berkshire Humane Society after many years in a loving home due to his owner having health issues. Morty is reliably house trained as well as crate trained. He prefers to have nice, cozy blankets in his crate so he can make a nest, and he loves to lounge on the furniture as well. He’s just a good boy who enjoys the finer things in life! Morty lived with a female dog years ago, and may be OK to do so again. But no small pets for this gentleman please. Morty is incredibly affectionate and loves relaxing with the shelter kennel staff. He’d love a home where he can spend his golden years taking leisurely walks and snuggling on the couch. If you think Morty may be the perfect fit for you, please reach out to the Berkshire Humane Society kennel staff at (413)-447-7878 ext. 126 for more information. Morty’s adoption fee has been graciously sponsored by the Danny Boy Adoption Fund.

Put on your helmet for the first annual Bicycle Film Festival
BY ELLEN SPEAR BerkshiresWeek
Are you a devoted bike rider or a weekend warrior? A dirt bike maven or a racer? No matter what your cycling devotion, you’ll be interested in the Bicycle Film Festival, coming to the Berkshires for the first time. The celebration of all things two-wheeled will be at The Stationery Factory in Dalton along with a day-long festival that includes screenings of short films, family-friendly bike rides and bike-related vendors.
The films are sure to inspire the already-devoted cyclist and to spark interest in novices. Founded in New York, the Bicycle Film Festival has been celebrating bicycles through art, film and music for the last 24 years to an audience of over one million people worldwide.
Adventure Shorts will be screening at 2 p.m. and Selected Shorts are up at 6 p.m. with more than 15 films featured. They include documentaries, narratives and animations by award-winning directors like Ridley Scott as well as by emerging talent. Check out our Berkshire bike ride videos and suggested routes from Mike Ward on berkshiresweek.com as well as a trailer from the festival!
Ellen Spear can be reached at espear@ berkshireeagle.com or 413-496-6227.
BICYCLE FILM FESTIVAL

of our favorite picnic spots in the Berkshires
BY ELLEN SPEAR >> BerkshiresWeek
Picnics in the Berkshires are part of the summer tradition here. Whether you pick up ready-made food at a farmers market or at a fine food purveyor for your al fresco adventure, or even make it yourself, there are mountain tops with expansive views, lakeside dining options and cultivated gardens where you can enjoy the pleasure of eating outside. Many of the spots we suggest have easy parking and restroom facilities. Some have options for all-day outdoor fun. Here are 7 ideas on where to take your lunch or pre-evening entertainment dinner.
olivia’s overlook — monk’s pond
Parking at Lenox Road, Lenox
Work up an appetite with a hike on the Burbank Loop trail starting at the breathtaking Olivia’s Overlook in Lenox. The views here, of the Stockbridge Bowl and surrounding mountains, during all seasons, are sure to inspire. Monk’s Pond provides a shady picnic spot with bird songs and serenity. If you are content with the gorgeous view of the Bowl at the Olivia’s Overlook parking area, you can claim a spot on the rock wall and spread your feast there.
mountain meadow preserve Mason St., Williamstown
Take a short walk on any of the meandering trails to find your perfect picnic spot. There are views of the spires of Williamstown and Mt. Greylock, spectacular wildflower meadows and shady areas where you can find secluded spots to spread your blanket and enjoy your meal. You can even hike over the border into Vermont for a peek before you settle down on your blanket for a meal.
windsor lake
Intersection of Bradley St. and Kemp Avenue, North Adams
Windsor Lake is a great family picnic spot. With picnic tables and charcoal grills available, it’s the place to picnic and spend the entire day, with time for a swim, go for a paddle and even enjoy one of the free concerts presented on a regular schedule throughout the summer.
tanglewood
297 West St., Lenox
The grounds at Tanglewood are open dawn to dusk, where you may picnic at no charge anytime outside of concert hours. Enjoy manicured lawns, views of the Stockbridge Bowl, specimen trees and the sounds of Tanglewood musicians and students practicing. On concert days, tickets are required. Why not make a Tanglewood picnic a part of your summer? Tanglewood picnics have been elevated to an artform, with some folks setting their portable picnic tables with candelabras, French linens and silver flatware.
pittsfield state forest
1041 Cascade St., Pittsfield
One of the best features of the Berkshires is that you can find the solitude of the woods without leaving city limits. Pittsfield State Forest has a choice of appealing picnic locations, from areas with grills to the solitude of Berry Pond. There is ample parking, and accessible picnicking areas, restrooms and a ¾ mile accessible trail.
mount greylock
Visitor Center, 30 Rockwell Road, Lanesborough
With a view of several states, drive up or hike up to the summit of this 3,491 foot peak, where, on a clear day, you can see 90 miles. Spread your blanket on a flat rock to take in the spectacular view, or find a secluded shady spot in the woods. Best of all, there are restrooms at the summit to clean up after your meal.
beartown state forest
69 Blue Hill Road, Monterey
Set your feast by the beach at Benedict Pond. Grills, picnic areas and restrooms are some of the facilities at this family spot to enjoy eating outside. Work up an appetite hiking on the forest trails, swimming or fishing. In the woods, away from the picnic areas, you might encounter a range of wildlife along the trails.
