A total of 7,851,833 girls and boys were involved in school sports during the 2022-2023 academic year. That number marked an increase of 232,779 participants from the previous school year. Among the surveyed participants, the most popular boys programs were football and outdoor track and field. For girls, the most popular programs were outdoor track and field and volleyball. Families have their own reasons for choosing private school over public, and class size may factor into those decisions. According to U.S. News and World Report, the student-to-teacher ratio at private schools in 2021 was 12.5 students per teacher, lower than the average 15.4 at public schools. The National Center for Education Statistics says public schools have an average class size of 25 students, compared to 19 students per class in private schools. ThoughtCo. indicates public school classes can be as large as 25 to 30 students, particularly in urban neighborhoods, while most private schools keep their classes limited to 10 to 15 students. Freemont University reports that students learn faster and perform better in smaller classes. Those in classes with fewer than 20 students often get more individualized attention, participate with greater frequency, and have better communication with the teacher.

Parents may have heard varying iterations of the theory that listening to classical music can help students improve their academic performance and wondered if there’s any truth to that. And it turns out there is. A study from researchers at Baylor University released in 2020 found that college students who listened to Beethoven and Chopin during an interactive lecture on microeconomics and then heard the music again that night while sleeping performed better on a test the following day than did peers who were in the same lecture but listened to white noise while they slept. Students who listened to the music increased their performance on integration questions by 18 percent. That’s a notable boost, but researchers warned it was temporary, as test scores did not remain as high when students took a similar test nine months later. The Hidden Dangers of Tick Bites

Despite being very small creatures, ticks can wreak havoc on people and pets. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that ticks can carry a host of diseases, which they may pass on to animals and their human companions. Though Lyme disease gets the most attention, dogs, who tend to spend more time outdoors than cats, may be susceptible to any of these conditions: · Ehrlichiosis · Rocky Mountain spotted fever · Babesiosis

Bartonella

Hepatozoonosis · Tularemia · Tick paralysis · Anaplasmosis

Illnesses from tick bites can cause fever, loss of appetite, painful and swollen joints, lameness, swollen lymph nodes, and lethargy. Topical and oral flea and tick products can minimize the number of ticks found on pets, and also prevent the types of long latch times that can lead to disease transmission through tick saliva. In addition, keeping pets away from tall grasses and removing ticks after coming indoors can help reduce the risk for tick-related illnesses.
