Easter at Berkeley Hall Club 25th Anniversary Q&A with the Marinis BHCF Bloom Together

mar/apr 2026

pring is nearly here! From the Savannah Gardens to our Tom Fazio courses, it’s wonderful to see the Lowcountry coming into bloom.

We're getting ready for many of our favorite Club traditions from our Berkeley Hall-style Easter Celebration to the Mixed MemberMember, and introducing some new ones we hope all will enjoy.

The excitement continues as we approach Berkeley Hall Club’s 25th Silver Anniversary Celebration. We invite you to celebrate with us, with monthly events that reflect our entire community and stories told through the voices of our members.

Perfectly timed for peak Lowcountry bloom, our BHCF Ladies Event is always a wonderful way to gather in support of the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation, and you can read more about it and the foundation on pages 4-5.

When it comes to exceptional member experiences, Berkeley Hall is continually raising the bar, and the Clubhouse has long been the heart of the community. Spring is the perfect time to gather with us, for casual dining on the Verandah, leisurely Sunday brunches and evening cocktails as the sun sets.

Golden marshes edged with green, and graceful breezes that gently stir moss-draped limbs, Spring in the Lowcountry always takes our breath away. Showcasing the natural beauty of our setting comes naturally to landscape photographer and Berkeley Hall member Patrick Quigley, whose stunning cover graces this issue.

We’ve got a great Spring planned at the Club. Come join us and enjoy the best of our “Berkeley Experience!”

Berkeley Hall Director of Communications

Links Magazine showcased Berkeley Hall in its prestigious 2026 Premier Properties Guide issue with an expansive twopage spread on our private golf community, and a look at our club amenities and lifestyle. Showcased among the world's best golf communities, you can read the full article on member site berkeleyhallclub.com.

You’ll Feel Right at Home: in our charming cottages with easy access to everything. From golf weekends to family stays, our cottages offer all the amenities you could ask for. It’s a short walk to the Clubhouse and onto the greens, and you’ll find the Spa & Fitness Center just around the corner.

ON THE COVER: Our stunning cover shot is courtesy of professional landscape photographer and Berkeley Hall member Patrick Quigley. Patrick shared: “There is a specific clarity to the light here in the spring that makes it special. Capturing my first peak azalea bloom last year was about more than just the flowers; it was about capturing the way those vibrant colors interacted with the morning's light and shadows. I’m thrilled to be able to share, through my lens and work, these beautiful glimpses of this special place we are graced to call home.”

You can visit a gallery of his work at www.QuigleyFineArt.com.

In late January, Berkeley Hall members welcomed 29 Lowcountry charitable organizations to the Verandah for Mingle with Meaning – an evening devoted to connection, conversation, and understanding how $500,000 in 2026 grant awards will fuel meaningful work across our community.

The atmosphere was exactly what the name promised: warm, purposeful, and filled with positive energy. Leaders from across the nonprofit community shared stories of impact, collaboration, and resilience – culminating in a powerful keynote address by Courtney Hampson, CEO of Bluffton Self Help.

Ms. Hampson spoke movingly about how these diverse agencies work together, often behind the scenes, to stretch every dollar and create lasting change. Of the

29 organizations present, 17 currently partner directly with Bluffton Self Help, a powerful example of how collaboration strengthens efficiency and expands reach across the Lowcountry.

“Lowcountry organizations are constantly handling crisis. They just do it quietly.”

- Courtney Hampson, Bluffton Self Help CEO

She reminded us that while the Lowcountry’s beauty is unmistakable, it can quietly conceal deep and growing need. A drive down Buck Island Road toward May River Road reveals this divide – where trailer homes still lack electricity. And as growth continues in Hardeeville and Ridgeland, Bluffton and

Hilton Head-based charities are increasingly stretching their services to meet geographically expanding needs. That quiet commitment was on full display throughout the evening and it underscored an important truth: while Berkeley Hall’s generosity is making a real and measurable difference, the needs in our community are increasing, not easing.

The Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation extends heartfelt thanks to our members who give generously, volunteer faithfully, and share their talents so freely. Because of you, our impact continues.

Together, we will keep making a difference locally.

WEDNESDAY, APR 22 | 11AM-4PM

Please join the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation for a spring gathering of brunch, shopping, and connection as we Bloom Together – Cultivating Friendships. Transforming Lowcountry Lives.

Perfectly timed for peak Lowcountry bloom, this year’s Ladies Event begins with a seated brunch and a fresh look

at our thoughtfully curated vendors, an easy, welcoming way to meet new friends and reconnect with familiar faces.

From there, the afternoon unfolds at a relaxed pace, with casual shopping and plenty of time to linger, browse, and enjoy one another’s company – all in support of the Foundation’s

work to strengthen and sustain our most vulnerable neighbors across the Lowcountry.

With a more intimate format, space will be limited. Registration opens soon – make plans now to join us as friendships flourish and impact takes root. More details coming soon!

Save the Date

for our spectacular Silver 25th Celebration on Saturday, October 17th, 2026

As we approach this remarkable milestone, our story is best told through the voices of our members, we hope you enjoy hearing them and learning more about our Club’s shared history.

You could say it was love at first sight, as Lynn and Henry Marini’s first look at Berkeley Hall was for a possible wedding venue! “We loved the Charleston, Savannah, Hilton Head Island area and knew we wanted a Lowcountry destination wedding. When we discovered Bluffton, we visited a number of communities and then we came to Berkeley Hall. The rest is history,” share Henry and Lynn. It was a gorgeous October with sunny skies, a perfect setting for a memorable wedding weekend with Friday golf and an afternoon pontoon boat cruise followed by evening cocktails and dinner. On Saturday, the couple wed in the Savannah Gardens, with dinner and dancing at the Clubhouse, capped off with a late night in the Tap Room! “Then we shared a leisurely Sunday brunch with our guests

and family and couldn’t have been happier,” added Lynn.

It’s worth noting that once they arrived, following Henry’s afternoon of golf with Bill Hershberger, Wayne Hoffman, and Don Ryder, they decided to tour the community with member/realtor Wayne Corley. By their wedding date they’d already chosen the lot for their dream home! And it was Wayne who performed their ceremony.

That wonderful wedding weekend is now 10 years past, and Henry and Lynn have built many lasting memories at BHC. Along with Henry’s service on the Board of Directors, and many hours on the courses! Here, we spend some time with them as we continue our lead-up to BHC’s 25th Anniversary Celebration.

BHC: Love Most?

L&H: That it’s an intentionally smaller community with low density, easy access to golf (for Henry) wonderful amenities, and the beautifully manicured grounds. We feel grateful to be here.

BHC: Favorite Memory

L&H: Our wedding weekend! The weather was beautiful, everything was so well-done, and everyone had a tremendous time. We loved every moment.

BHC: Most Meaningful?

L&H: Berkeley Hall is such a special place, friendly, welcoming, beautiful, a top-notch Club with a lifestyle we enjoy immensely. And when it comes to what we value most, it’s the deep, lasting friendships we̓ve made. Friendships that now feel like family.

PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB: Ben

Ham

Ben Ham’s fine art photography is shaped by a quiet discipline – images guided by tone, light, and an intuitive sense of composition honed over a lifetime in the traditional craft.

“I’ve stopped to enjoy this view, Causeway To Paradise, countless times as I crossed the causeway, each time feeling transported back in time,” shares Ben.

“Mr. Joe inherited the 460-acre island

paradise, placing it in a trust to prevent it from being developed, knowing that future generations would enjoy its immense untouched beauty.”

Ben photographs with large format cameras, their movements allow for the great detail in his images. “As with most of my work, I waited for the right moment – enjoying the morning light filtering softly through the trees, clouds

rolling into the scene from the storms overnight, the mood was still and quiet. I love this time of day.”

Come join us and learn more about Ben’s photography and the stories that shape his collection.

“The Secret War of Julia Child” by Diana Chambers

Before she mastered the art of French cooking in midlife, Julia Child found herself working in the secrets trade in Asia during World War II. Single, 6 foot 2, and thirty-years old, Julia McWilliams took a job with America's first espionage agency, years before cooking or Paris entered the picture.

The novel traces Julia's transformation from Pasadena blue blood to Washington, DC file clerk, to head of Gen. "Wild Bill" Donovan's secret File Registry. The wartime journey takes her to Asia's remote frontlines of then-Ceylon, India, and China, where she finds purpose, adventure, selfknowledge – and love with mapmaker Paul Child. Review: Goodreads

“The Correspondent” by Virginia Evans

Virginia Evans’ The Correspondent tells the story of the life of Sybil Van Antwerp. Written through the letters Sybil writes and receives, we learn of her beginnings, who she was and who she’d hoped to be.

Sybil, a mother and grandmother, divorced, retired from law and who now lives alone, is equal parts peevish, good-natured, cautious and bold, and frequently gets in her own way. As her story unfolds, she discovers the forgiveness she needs, both for herself and for others, as she embarks on a profound and unexpected transformation at the age of 73. Sybil discovers who she is, a rebirth of sorts, though she is, according to her, in the “winter season” of her life’s journey. Review: Southern Review of Books

$2,395/pp Non-Member | $2,195/pp Member

Top 100 Instructor Krista Dunton brings a level of excitement to Berkeley Hall Golf Academy that’s unparalleled.

Dunton’s unique, custom approach is matched by the award-winning technology at Berkeley Hall’s 33-acre Learning Center. “We have the technology to properly diagnose what’s going on with the golf ball, the golf club. I individualize what you can do with your body through bio-swing dynamics, because

everyone is built differently. No one is going to swing the golf club the same, nor should they, as we all have different physical structures. In my 25-plus years of teaching, what makes me different is I know what to leave alone and what to pinpoint and fix so you build a golf swing you can own and it can repeat on the course.”

Once on the course, Dunton works on the other elements of human skills: how you think, react to your shot, manage your emotions and develop great technical skills that repeat under pressure, with a good mental set that allows you to perform at your best.

“We are fortunate to have some of the best technology so we can measure and assess. We measure so we don’t guess, and the changes we make as your teachers and coaches are going to help you improve your game.”

We want to offer you something different, and customize it to you, the individual. I believe everyone has their own unique swing DNA. We work with what you have, and enhance that and make it better.
–Krista Dunton

DAY 1 We use technology to get a game plan of where you are and where you’re going to go to.

DAY 2 The process of getting your game on the course. How to think correctly, make it productive, implement swing changes under competition and pressure.

DAY 3 How to keep this going, and practice correctly and efficiently.

“We want to teach you how to manage variability. What I love about our Learning Center and two golf courses, is we’ve got every shot imaginable you can learn to play,” adds Dunton. “We teach you a variety of shots, different trajectories –so when you go on the course, you take those shots you learned in practice and tap into that with confidence.”

I2026 GCSAA CONFERENCE & TRADE SHOW IN ORLANDO

n early February, a group of our leadership team attended the 2026 GCSAA Conference & Trade Show in Orlando, the golf course management world’s biggest annual gathering. This year’s event set alltime participation records, with nearly 13,000 attendees and hundreds of exhibitors showcasing the latest products, research and real-world solutions exactly where turf science meets daily course care.

Throughout the week, we dove into seminars and roundtables on advanced turf management, equipment innovation, water planning, staff development and agronomic best practices. We attended sessions ranging from soil moisture management, disease management, equipment maintenance, to leadership development and workforce retention. The ideas learned translate directly to how we protect turf health, enhance playability, and manage resources more effectively on our course.

One emerging theme was the growing role of precision moisture monitoring. New connected sensor platforms debuted that give superintendents real-time soil moisture data across the property, helping inform irrigation decisions with much greater granularity than traditional methods. Technologies being tested and previewed combine in-field moisture sensors with centralized control systems so that irrigation can be tailored to actual root-zone needs

reducing waste, fine-tuning turf playability, and ultimately providing drier and consistent surfaces throughout the property.

Autonomous mowing equipment took center stage on the trade show floor and during interactive tours, we saw robotic mowers and autonomous sprayers in action, machines capable of handling routine mowing and other repetitive tasks with minimal hands-on oversight. One hands-on facility tour highlighted how autonomous mowers have saved significant crew hours, allowing staff to focus on more technical and strategic work around the course.

Manufacturers are also pushing automation beyond mowing, introducing autonomous spray systems that can apply turf treatments with GPS-guided precision. While we already utilize GPS-guided sprayers, the next wave of technology layers in camera systems capable of identifying individual weeds and early signs of disease. The result is the ability to spot treat rather than blanket apply, which over time means even greater accuracy and a continued reduction in chemical inputs.

But beyond seminars and shiny new toys, one of the most valuable parts of the week was simply being among our peers. The weather this winter has been unusually challenging for many turf teams, with cold snaps, drought, freeze–thaw cycles and

winter precipitation. Superintendents from across the country shared their experiences, frustrations and strategies, and there was a palpable sense of community throughout the hallways and meals. That informal networking, comparing challenges and solutions, felt at times like its own mental-health session for a profession that can be as tough as the turf we manage.

Attending the GCSAA Conference reminds you that we are part of a larger community of professionals who are passionate about this craft and committed to moving it forward together. We returned with renewed focus, new tools in our toolkit, and a deeper sense of purpose for what we do every day at Berkeley Hall.

We look forward to implementing these and putting them to work for our membership, keeping our course healthy, efficient, sustainable and enjoyable season after season.
