Sometimes, the most understated scripts we read rise to the surface. The all-too-real environment of a hospital waiting room is one that we will all, eventually, find ourselves in. Kennedyâs writing is simple and intimate, telling it's story through pauses, small shifts in tone, and conversations full of things unspoken. He trusts the audience to listen, and really hear the

characters rather than be told what to think. Alongside stories of historical trauma and existential crisis, A Moment in Time thoughtfully reminds us that recognition of human life is not reserved for extraordinary circumstances. Within the quiet of the waiting room, an everyday exchange becomes unexpectedly profound, as presence and compassion reveal how even the smallest moments can matter.

Many years ago I visited TerezĂn, a fortress-turned-concentration camp. Early in WWII, TerezĂn served as a ghetto for Jews of special rank: those with international fame, or who had fought for Germany in WWI, or whose sons were currently fighting for the Reich in exchange for their familiesâ lives.
Eventually, TerezĂn descended to the level of the other concentration campsâplaces of torture and despair. For many, it was a way-station to their deaths at Auschwitz or other death camps.
Bending to international pressure, the Nazis allowed Red Cross inspectors to visit TerezĂn briefly late in the war. In preparation, they made improvements to the living conditions, and instructed the famous residents to perform Mozartâs Requiem and other pieces of music and theater. Because of this visit, we have more photos and documentation than from other camps.
Raya Englanderova was a girl sent to TerezĂn, the only member of her family to survive the war. She was mentored and mothered in the camp by an artist-turned-teacher, known in this play as Irena Synkova, who devoted herself to the care of the thousands of traumatized children who came to live in the camp.
Raya saved the art that Irena helped the children create, and some of it is reproduced here in your program, as well as on the back wall of the set.
Irena taught Raya to survive the horrors of TerezĂn, and, more importantly, to live again.
We are honored to tell their stories, and bear witness to the short lives of the 15,000 children who spent time in TerezĂnâfewer than 150 of whom survived the war.

The following gallery features a small selection of the art that Raya Englanderova saved upon her release from TerezĂn at the end of World War II.

As the sun draws closer and the world overheats, this story from 1961 holds a mirror to it's audience and asks the question: What would it take for us to see the value in the people we often fail to see? The writing, much like Rod Serling's original teleplay, is deliberately economical and unsentimental. The dialogue resists melodrama even as circumstances become extreme. The characters speak like ordinary people, clinging to routine and rationality even as reality melts around them. The Midnight Sun asks whether we understand the worth of human life only when it is about to be lost. Affection, regret, tenderness, and fear intensify not because the world is ending, but because time makes us suddenly honest. Worth is revealed, not created, by crisis. Enjoy your trip into Twilight Zone, I hope you make it back safely.
