ENDOWMENT Sustaining Greatness at
Endowment is about sustaining the exceptional nature of TBS for decades to come by enhancing programs and buffering economic and enrollment downturns. By helping build The Benjamin School’s endowment, you are making the most lasting, and perhaps most important, gift you will ever make to the School.
A strong endowment ensures that TBS thrives by providing the financial flexibility to invest strategically in teachers, academic and athletic programs and the expansion of diversity of our school.
WHAT IS ENDOWMENT? Simply put, endowment is Benjamin’s savings account. Endowed gifts are part of the School’s donated pool of invested money where the principal is left untouched so it can achieve long-term growth. The return from those investments can be used to fund Benjamin’s operations, pay for special programming, or grow the endowment principal. The bigger the endowment, the more Benjamin can earn on an annual basis to offset annual budget expenditures. Independent schools with the strongest endowments set the standards of educational excellence, push the frontiers of innovation, and sustain greatness over generations.
BY THE NUMBERS: Current invested funds and endowment:
$16 MILLION Endowment goal:
$30 MILLION by 2030

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ENDOWMENT? Unrestricted Endowment: This can be used at the discretion of the Board of Trustees in accordance with spending policies. Restricted Endowment: The earnings must be spent as the donor stipulates in accordance with spending policies. Term Endowment: The principal is held intact only for a predetermined amount of time, to fund a specific area either directed by the donor or the School.

THE BENJAMIN SCHOOL’S
Endowment Investment Philosophy The Board of Trustees’ primary goal for its endowment is to achieve returns sufficient to sustain annual 5% draw plus inflationary growth to help grow the principal over time. The annual draw rate is consistent with best practices among independent schools who rely on endowment for sustainable growth. Carefully governed and professionally managed. The Board’s Investment Committee oversees all investment activity, with advice and implementation from professional asset management consultants.
