Hippolyte Fizeau Vue du bassin du Roi, au Havre Été 1840, Fizeau réalise deux daguerréotypes depuis la fenêtre de sa chambre à l’hôtel du Brésil, quartier Saint-François. Grâce à l’utilisation d’un miroir ces vues ne sont pas inversées. Le temps calme qui règne permet le bel effet de reflet dans l’eau du bassin malgré le long temps de pose nécessaire. Fizeau photographie un trois-mâts immobile au milieu du bassin et inclut la façade de l’Arsenal. Sur le quai se dresse la tente d’embarquement du Phénix, affecté à la ligne Le Havre-Londres, qui coulera en Manche le 25 octobre 1840. À droite, derrière la petite douane, on distingue le quai d‘Orléans, la place de la Mâture et au loin les premières villas de la Côte. Acquise en 2022 par la ville du Havre, la vue de droite est ici exceptionnellement combinée à la vue de gauche, grâce à l’aimable autorisation de Michael Mattis et Judith Hockerg.
Hippolyte Fizeau View of the Bassin du Roi in Le Havre In the summer of 1840, Fizeau took two daguerreotypes from the window of his room in the Hôtel du Brésil in the Saint-François neighbourhood, photographing a stationary three-master in the middle of the basin and including the facade of the Arsenal. By using a mirror, Fizeau succeeded in obtaining views that are not reversed, and totally calm weather allowed him to capture the beautiful reflection effect in the water of the basin despite the long exposure time needed. On the quay stands the embarkation tent of the Phénix, a ship used on the Le Havre-London line which was to sink in the Channel on 25 October 1840. On the right, behind the small customs office, we can make out the Quai d’Orléans, the Place de la Mâture and, in the distance, the first coastal villas. This is an extremely rare opportunity to see the right-hand view, which was acquired by the City of Le Havre in 2022, together with the left-hand view, by kind permission of Michael Mattis and Judith Hockerg.
