Councillor Reeta Chamdal The Mayor on the importance of business in Hillingdon
WELCOME
CONTENTS
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the latest edition of the Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce Business Magazine. This has been another exciting period of progress for the Chamber, defined by energy, ambition and collaboration. Across Hillingdon, we continue to see businesses of every size demonstrating remarkable resilience, innovation and a genuine commitment to our borough. Our role as a Chamber is to turn that ambition into opportunity. We are strengthening connections between businesses, education providers, local government and the wider community. Ensuring that our members have a stronger voice, greater visibility and access to the relationships that can support their growth. Through initiatives such as The Exchange, The Nexus, our Women in Business Network, the Ambassador Programme and our growing work with schools, colleges and young people, we are creating new ways for people and organisations to connect. Every interaction should create the possibility of another opportunity, whether that is a new customer, supplier, partnership, investment or career. We are also focused on developing a stronger local supply chain, supporting our SMEs and ensuring that the economic opportunities being created across the borough are more accessible to local businesses.

As we look ahead, our ambition is clear: to make Hillingdon one of the best places in London to start, grow and invest in a business. Achieving this will require continued partnership, a strong independent business voice and a shared commitment to inclusive and sustainable growth. I would like to thank our members, Patrons, Strategic Partners, Board, NEDs, Ambassadors and the many organisations that continue to support the Chamber’s work. Your engagement allows us to raise Hillingdon’s profile and deliver meaningful local impact. There is a great deal to be proud of and even more to look forward to. Together, we are driving business, creating opportunity and building Hillingdon’s future.

Denham Grove Hotel recognised in Tripadvisor's top 10% of hotels worldwide Continued investment, exceptional hospitality and a commitment to memorable guest experiences earn Denham Grove Hotel a Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Award 2026 Following a period of continued investment and enhancement, Denham Grove Hotel is celebrating international recognition after being awarded a Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Award 2026, placing the hotel among the top 10% of hospitality businesses worldwide. The prestigious award recognises businesses that consistently deliver outstanding guest experiences, with winners determined entirely by authentic reviews and ratings shared by travellers on Tripadvisor over the past 12 months. Unlike many industry awards, Travellers' Choice recognition is based solely on genuine guest feedback, making it one of the hospitality industry's most respected accolades. Denham Grove is one of four hotels within the Countrywide Hotels portfolio to receive a Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Award in 2026, reflecting the group's commitment to delivering exceptional hospitality across its collection of hotels. The award follows an exciting period of continued investment across the hotel, with a focus on enhancing every aspect of the guest experience. Alongside ongoing improvements throughout the property, Denham Grove has introduced a range of new experiences, including the popular Pods by Clay Oven,
the Open Kitchen dining concept and the addition of padel courts, further strengthening its position as one of Buckinghamshire's most versatile destinations. This ongoing evolution is complemented by the welcoming atmosphere and personal service that guests have come to value. Karl Wilson, General Manager of Denham Grove Hotel, said: "We are absolutely delighted to receive the Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Award for 2026. To know that this recognition comes directly from our guests makes it even more meaningful for everyone at Denham Grove. This award is a reflection of our incredible team, whose passion, positivity and commitment to delivering outstanding hospitality shine through every single day. Whether welcoming guests for a relaxing weekend away, a business meeting, a wedding celebration or dinner with family and friends, they consistently go above and beyond to ensure every visit is memorable. Over the past year we have continued to invest in the hotel, introducing exciting new experiences such as our padel courts alongside enhancements across the property and facilities our guests already
know and love. Our aim has always been to create a destination that feels welcoming, contemporary and full of character, while never losing sight of the personal service that sits at the heart of everything we do. We are incredibly proud of how Denham Grove continues to evolve, and it is wonderful to see our guests recognising those efforts through their reviews. I would like to thank everyone who has stayed with us, dined with us, attended an event or celebration, or taken the time to share their experience. Their support inspires us to continue improving every day." Today, Denham Grove is recognised as far more than a hotel. Whether guests are escaping to the countryside for a relaxing break, bringing colleagues together for a conference, celebrating life's special moments or enjoying distinctive dining experiences, the hotel continues to provide a welcoming destination where exceptional hospitality and memorable experiences come together. As the world's largest travel guidance platform, Tripadvisor uses reviews and ratings from millions of travellers to identify businesses that consistently exceed guest expectations. Travellers' Choice winners represent the top 10% of listings worldwide and are recognised for their commitment to hospitality excellence.
Collaboration is on the table at Hillingdon Expo Some collaborations start with a pitch deck and a formal introduction; ours started with a spare tablecloth
At a Hillingdon Expo a while back I was setting up when the two guys on the stand backing onto mine spotted me laying out my tablecloth. "I don't suppose you've got a spare?" one of them asked. By sheer chance I'd bought a two-pack, so I did, and that was how I met Robert and Mark from CFone Communications. After that chance meeting, we kept bumping into each other at Chamber events, so when Depictar won Innovative Company of the Year at the Hillingdon Business Awards for Content Pal, Robert and Mark were among the people who got in touch, and they booked a session. CFone are a telecoms company, and you only have to speak to Robert and Mark for five minutes to realise they're engineers who genuinely love solving a problem. A lot of what they do is hard to get across in text alone but it comes alive when someone who
8
actually understands it talks you through it. Things like call recording that can flag a potential safeguarding concern straight from a transcript or calling from your office landline on an app on your mobile. I sat down with Robert and Mark and recorded the questions their customers ask all the time, like "where on earth do you start if your phone system hasn't been looked at in years?" It's the kind of expertise that usually stays locked in someone's head, but that session gave me enough videos and other content to keep them going for weeks. What I've enjoyed most is how naturally it has all flowed. At the most recent Expo this summer, I had people coming over to my stand having been sent across by Mark. I couldn't have planned any of that, but that's kind of the point. It builds up slowly, until the people you keep meeting through the Chamber are the ones you actually want to do business with. Remembering 60 years of Hillingdon Visitors can relive six decades of Hillingdon history shared through residents’ memories thanks to a new audio and interactive display which opened on 4 September at Hillingdon Museum and Archives Service in Uxbridge. 'Hillingdon at 60', showcases emotive and informative first-hand recollections recorded during the council’s ‘Reminiscence Roadshows’, held last year to mark the borough’s Diamond Jubilee. Excerpts from more than 30 of those recordings form a snapshot of the borough’s past, through the voices of people who lived it, and explore themes of everyday life, work, community and change, while celebrating a shared sense of identity and belonging. Visitors will be able to hear residents recount key memories of Hillingdon’s past, bringing the borough vividly to life, by listening to them via a sound cup styled in the shape of a vintage replica telephone. Among those featured are Reika Wadhwani, from Yeading, recalling her experiences following the opening of the A312 in Hayes. She said: ‘I had to pass the Nestlé factory every single morning, and I would get the smell of coffee, it was wonderful’.
Cllr Wayne Bridges, Hillingdon Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents Services, said: “We are proud of our borough’s unique history and this exhibition provides a fantastic opportunity to hear the past recounted through the real experiences of residents who have lived here for decades. “It will provide a valuable and fascinating glimpse into life in days gone by and how things have changed during the last 60 years, so I’d encourage anyone keen to uncover more about Hillingdon's history to visit.”
Geraint Hayward remembered Concorde’s test flight out of Heathrow: ‘We were told to stand in the playground, and we didn’t at first know why, and it was then explained to us that this new plane was going to make its first test flight’.
Alongside the exhibition, you can also explore the museum’s replica Victorian parlour, see the Basset’s Grant, a document from the 1100s, and the ‘Hillingdon Hoard’, a collection of more than 300 Iron Age coins called ‘potins’ dating from the 1st century BCE.
Young visitors can also add their ‘favourite place in Hillingdon’ to an interactive map, helping create a unique snapshot of the borough today.
It is free to visit and will remain on display for a year, giving residents plenty of opportunity to discover the stories that have shaped our borough.

From isolation to independence: How Aasra Welfare is supporting women in Hillingdon Aasra Welfare CIC is a community organisation supporting women affected by domestic abuse, sexual abuse, mental health challenges and social isolation. Our work is built around a simple principle: women should have access to a safe, trusted environment where they can rebuild confidence, develop independence and connect with the support they need. This year has marked an important period of growth and recognition for Aasra Welfare. We were recently named Welfare Organisation of the Year in the London & South East England Prestige Awards 2026/27, recognising our work in domestic violence and mental wellbeing support. For our team, this award is not simply about recognition; it reflects the importance of community-based services that are accessible, compassionate and responsive to the needs of women. Aasra Welfare has also been awarded £7,500 by Heathrow Community Trust for our project, Supporting Vulnerable Women and Families Affected by Domestic Abuse in Hillingdon. As part of this work, we have launched our Women’s Wellbeing & ESOL Project in West Drayton. The programme provides free fortnightly sessions where women can improve their English, access mental health and wellbeing support, build confidence and resilience, receive
information and signposting, and develop friendships and community connections. Social isolation can be a significant issue for women experiencing or recovering from domestic abuse. Language barriers, poor mental health, financial difficulties and a lack of trusted networks can make it even harder to seek support. Our project therefore goes beyond individual sessions. We want women to feel part of their community again. Trust is central to our approach. Women may feel hesitant about approaching unfamiliar organisations or repeatedly explaining difficult experiences to new professionals. By creating a familiar, nonjudgemental environment and building

relationships with specialist organisations, we can introduce services gradually and make referrals in a way that feels less daunting. Partnership working is therefore an important part of Aasra Welfare’s development. We work with community organisations and specialist services to ensure women can access appropriate support relating to domestic abuse, mental health, housing, safeguarding and other practical needs. For Hillingdon’s wider business community, there is also an important message. Strong communities are created when businesses, charities, funders and public services work together. Support can take many forms— from funding and professional expertise to volunteering, referrals, awareness and partnership opportunities. Our ambition is to continue developing Aasra Welfare as a trusted community resource where women can move from isolation to connection, from uncertainty to confidence, and ultimately towards greater independence. inspirational leader Could you provide an overview of your role as Mayor, what a ‘typical’ day looks like and what led you into politics to become a Councillor in 2022? I don't think there is a typical day as such. Having been in the role for four months now, each day is different. My role is purely civic and non-political, representing Hillingdon. My weeks vary, but some of the ceremonies and visits I oversee, include citizenship ceremonies, welcoming visitors such as local volunteers, school children and representatives from local charities and organisations to the Mayor’s Parlour, and having the privilege of opening community events, celebrating milestone anniversaries, visiting local businesses or attending faith and cultural celebrations. Evenings are also very busy with anything from presenting awards or representing the London Borough of Hillingdon at formal engagements. It can be a busy schedule, but meeting residents and hearing their stories makes it extremely rewarding. I became involved with the council initially by helping and supporting my husband’s campaign to become a Councillor, and over the years I grew confident in my own ability and desire to give something back and make sure residents had a strong voice. I wanted to help address the practical issues that matter to people including roads, lighting and community safety for example. Becoming a Councillor has given me the opportunity to listen to residents and help influence change where possible. Becoming Mayor has been a tremendous honour and another opportunity to serve the borough that has already given me and my family so much.
Having been born and raised in the borough, what makes you proud of Hillingdon? I'm incredibly proud of the borough's strong sense of community. It’s a place where people from many different cultures, faiths and backgrounds live side-by-side, while sharing a real sense of belonging. I am especially proud of our residents, volunteers, community groups, local businesses and faith organisations that work tirelessly to support others.
Hillingdon also offers a wonderful balance: we are part of London yet we enjoy beautiful parks, and a rich local history. Most of all I am proud of the kindness and community spirit I see wherever I go.
Hillingdon is home to a diverse business community. What role do businesses play in shaping the borough’s future? Businesses play a vital role. From independent shops and family run enterprises to major international companies, they create employment, attract investment and bring energy and opportunities to the borough. Running my own family business, I understand the challenges and the dedication required to build a successful enterprise. Businesses do more than contribute to the local economy, many support charities and sponsor community events. Businesses can help develop local skills and encourage innovation.
How important is the relationship between the council, local businesses and organisations such as Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce? By working together we can encourage investment, support our high streets, create jobs and develop skills and opportunities for local people. The Chamber of Commerce enables businesses to share their expertise, build stronger networks and contribute to the community.
How can local businesses get involved in supporting the wider community and making a positive difference across Hillingdon? Local businesses can make a positive difference in many ways from supporting local charities and sponsoring community events to offering apprenticeships and mentoring young people. Even small contributions can have a significant impact.
What do you see as Hillingdon’s greatest strengths? The people are our greatest strength. We are fortunate to have residents from many different cultures, and backgrounds each contributing to the character and vitality of our borough. They all play an essential part in making Hillingdon welcoming and resilient.
What is your vision for Hillingdon as Mayor? As Mayor I want to recognise our volunteers, community organisations, schools, faith groups and local businesses whose contributions make Hillingdon such a special place.
How would you describe your leadership style? I'd like to think I am approachable, compassionate and inclusive. I believe good leadership begins with listening – giving people the time and confidence to share their views ensuring they feel respected and valued. Leadership is about bringing people together, supporting others and working collaboratively to achieve the best outcome.
What is the best piece of leadership advice you have received? Treat everyone with dignity and respect and never ask others to do something you would not be willing to do yourself. Lead by example.
Which local person, past or present, has inspired you the most? I would say my children, they have taught me patience and the importance of listening. They have encouraged me to challenge myself, believe in what I can achieve and always stay positive. Followed closely by what you may think to be the most unexpected answer would be my dog Hugo. He reminds me every day about loyalty, patience and unconditional love. He has taught me that good leadership, like a good walk requires patience, consistency and occasionally stopping to listen even when you would rather keep moving!
If you could achieve one legacy as Mayor, what would it be? I hope I’ve made everyone I’ve met feel seen, valued and included. I would like to be remembered as an approachable Mayor who served with kindness, warmth and a genuine smile. I also hope to have raised greater awareness and support for Hillingdon Autistic Care and Support and helped improve understanding of autism. Ultimately, if my mayoral year encourages even one more person to volunteer, support their community or show greater compassion towards others, I’ll feel that I’ve made a lasting difference.
The people are our greatest strength. We are fortunate to have residents from many different cultures, and backgrounds each contributing to the character and vitality of our borough. Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce Business Magazine

Confidential Waste: A greener business issue hiding in plain sight For most businesses, sustainability is now part of everyday decision-making. Energy use, transport, packaging and recycling are all regularly reviewed. Yet one area often receives far less attention: confidential waste. Every organisation creates sensitive information. Customer records, employee details, financial documents, medical information and commercially sensitive paperwork all need to be handled securely throughout their life cycle. That creates a simple but important question: how can a business dispose of confidential information securely without undermining its environmental objectives? The answer starts with having a clear process. Staff should know exactly where confidential documents should go and shouldn’t be left to make individual decisions about what is safe to place in general waste or recycling. Ordinary recycling can create a false sense of security. A document may ultimately be recycled, but before that happens it can pass through several stages of collection, sorting and transportation. If it contains sensitive information, the important issue is ensuring that information is protected until the material has been destroyed. Secure consoles or locked collection containers can provide a practical solution, particularly in offices where sensitive paperwork is generated regularly. They help prevent documents being left unsecured, mixed with general waste or retained unnecessarily. Where a business does not have suitable facilities to securely destroy confidential material itself, specialist confidential waste providers can collect and destroy it and arrange for the resulting material to be recycled. They can also provide an audit trail or certificate of destruction where required, helping businesses demonstrate that sensitive information has been disposed of responsibly.
Choosing a supplier should therefore involve more than simply comparing collection prices. Businesses should understand where their confidential material is taken, how it is transported and stored, how destruction is carried out and what happens to the material afterwards. A reputable provider should be able to explain the process clearly. This is where data security and sustainability can work together. Once confidential paper has been securely shredded, it can be recycled and used in the manufacture of new paper products. Secure destruction does not have to mean unnecessary waste. Businesses should also consider whether they are retaining more information than they need. Regular reviews of archived records can reduce storage requirements, free valuable space and ensure documents are not kept indefinitely simply because no one has taken responsibility for their disposal. Clear retention policies can make this process much easier. The same principle extends beyond paper. Hard drives, laptops and other electronic media can retain significant quantities of sensitive information long after they have stopped being useful to the business. Responsible disposal therefore needs to consider both the physical equipment and the data it contains.
A genuinely sustainable approach is not simply about recycling more. It is about managing information responsibly from creation through to secure destruction. Good environmental practice and good information security should support each other, not compete. www.hungryshredder.co.uk

Meet the new Chamber board members Dayalan Mahesan
Keller Williams
Why did you want to join the HCC board? I wanted to join mainly because I feel the team are doing really exciting work. It's an exciting season, the Chamber's thriving, and I'd love to be part of that journey going forward. What impact do you hope to make? The impact I feel I could make is especially around connecting people and bringing people into the Chamber. I'm already very involved with a lot of different communities in Hillingdon and more broadly, so I'd love to bring all of that together for the betterment of the Chamber. I'm also very passionate about small business owners. I'd love to work more closely with them on their journey, involve them in the Chamber, and see them flourish as a result. Tell us a fun fact about yourself. I used to be a DJ when I was at university. I played at student union nights, black tie balls, and I've even done a billionaire's house in Hampstead. My wife and I are both really passionate about music.
Reisa Malaj
HXL Construction Why did you want to join the HCC board? I wanted to join because I genuinely believe in what the Chamber is capable of achieving, and what that means for our SME community. The SME community is such an integral part of our local economy, and ultimately, you can only expect out of the community what you give in. What impact do you hope to make? The impact I believe I'll be making is the fact that I run an SME myself, and I've been a member of the HCC for nearly 2 years now. I tend to be a person of action, so I'd like to not just talk about ideas but actually action them, and put our money where our mouths are. Tell us a fun fact about yourself. I met my husband, and 6 months later we'd started a business, and 8 months later we started living together. So, you could say I'm pretty decisive in that sense, and thankfully that investment's paid off.

EPISODE 5: The 'how-to' handbook Renovating with purpose: turning experience into practical knowledge By Asmi Ali (PhD), Owner, Rosemay Boutique Hotel
There is a saying that every challenge carries within it the seed of an opportunity. Looking back over the last few years, I can honestly say that this has been true of our journey in transforming a neglected property into what is now Rosemay Boutique Hotel in Hayes. What began as a vision to create a boutique hotel close to Heathrow Airport evolved into one of the most demanding, rewarding and educational experiences of my life. 18
Along the way, I realised that while there are countless books about property investment, architecture and interior design, very few capture the practical realities of managing a complex renovation project from concept to completion. I found myself learning through trial and error, navigating planning regulations, conservation requirements, financing, contractor management, procurement, compliance, technology integration and, above all, maintaining resilience when unexpected challenges arose. That experience inspired me to write "This Is Not Just a Renovation", a practical handbook designed to help others embarking on similar projects. More than simply documenting the transformation of Rosemay Boutique Hotel, the book captures the lessons, mistakes, solutions and decisionmaking processes that shaped our journey. My hope is that it saves future developers, entrepreneurs and business owners valuable time while encouraging them to renovate with purpose rather than simply focusing on bricks and mortar. Unlike many project diaries, the handbook is written as a practical guide. It takes readers through every stage of the development process, from developing the initial vision and securing planning permission to selecting
Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce Business Magazine
contractors, managing budgets, controlling quality and preparing for operational launch. It also highlights the emotional side of undertaking a major project: dealing with setbacks, making difficult decisions and maintaining confidence when progress feels slow. One of the strongest messages throughout the handbook is that successful renovation is not simply about restoring a building; it is about creating a sustainable business with a clear purpose. Every design decision, operational process and investment should ultimately improve the customer experience while supporting long-term commercial success. The response to the book has been incredibly encouraging. Readers have told me they appreciate its honest, practical approach and its willingness to discuss both successes and setbacks. Property developers, hotel owners, students and aspiring entrepreneurs have all found value in understanding what really happens behind the scenes of a major renovation. Rather than presenting an idealised version of development, the handbook offers realistic guidance based on lived experience. As someone who has spent over 25 years working in business improvement and organisational transformation, I have always
advertising feature believed that knowledge becomes truly valuable only when it is shared. Writing the handbook allowed me to combine my professional background with our family's hands-on experience of creating and operating an independent boutique hotel. The project has also reinforced my passion for promoting female entrepreneurship. The hospitality industry continues to offer tremendous opportunities for women to lead, innovate and build successful businesses. My own journey demonstrates that determination, careful planning and continuous learning can overcome many of the barriers entrepreneurs inevitably encounter. I hope the handbook encourages more women to pursue ambitious projects with confidence, knowing that expertise is built through experience. Equally important has been the role of family business. Rosemay Boutique Hotel has always been a family endeavour. My husband, Yousuf, brings decades of hotel management experience, while our children have contributed their own skills and fresh perspectives as the business has evolved. Working together has allowed us to combine different strengths while creating a shared
vision for the future. Like many family businesses across Hillingdon, we have discovered that success comes not only from hard work but also from trust, collaboration and a shared commitment to serving our community. There has also been an unexpected source of inspiration throughout this journey. Rosemay Boutique Hotel occupies a locally listed building with a unique connection to George Orwell, who taught here in the early 1930s. As someone who values lifelong learning and the written word, I often reflected that there could hardly be a more fitting place to write a book than a building linked to one of Britain's greatest authors. Renovating a property connected to George Orwell has been both a privilege and a constant reminder of the importance of preserving our local heritage while creating something meaningful for future generations. This year has brought another memorable milestone. We were delighted to be selected to participate in Channel 4's popular hospitality competition, Four in a Bed. It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase Rosemay Boutique Hotel, the spirit of independent hospitality and the London Borough of Hillingdon to a national television audience. The programme, which aired from 7–11 September, captured the realities of running a boutique hotel, complete with friendly competition, honest feedback and plenty of memorable moments. It was a
wonderful experience, and we hope viewers enjoyed following our journey as much as we enjoyed taking part. If you would like to explore the story behind the renovation in more detail, a hard copy of This Is Not Just a Renovation is available to read in our George Orwell Library at Rosemay Boutique Hotel. Why not visit Rosebud Nashtaa Café, enjoy a freshly brewed coffee, browse the book at your leisure, or even take home a personally signed copy? We would be delighted to welcome you. Looking ahead, my ambition extends beyond operating a successful boutique hotel. I hope the lessons learned through this journey, captured in the handbook and shared through our family business, will encourage others to believe that even the most ambitious projects begin with a single step. Whether restoring a building, starting a business or pursuing a personal dream, success is rarely about having all the answers at the outset. It is about having the courage to begin, the resilience to continue and the willingness to learn along the way. If my experiences can help someone else avoid a mistake, solve a problem or simply find the confidence to pursue their own vision, then writing "This Is Not Just a Renovation" will have achieved exactly what I hoped it would: transforming one family's journey into practical knowledge that benefits many others.
The response to the book has been incredibly encouraging. Readers have told me they appreciate its honest, practical approach and its willingness to discuss both successes and setbacks. OCIT Insights The end of the traditional landline: What it means for your business Pally Randhawa, Director @ One Care iT Limited (OCIT)
What is the switch-off? The old copper telephone network — the one that's connected homes and businesses since the 1800s — is being switched off for good. Openreach, the company behind the UK's phone and broadband infrastructure, is retiring both the analogue phone network (called PSTN) and the older digital phone network (called ISDN), with a final deadline of 31 January 2027. Put simply: the old copper wiring has reached the end of its life. It can no longer keep up with what modern businesses need, so everyone is moving over to newer, internetbased technology instead.
What does this mean for my business?
This gradual rollout means your business could be waiting weeks or months for your own installation, depending on how ready your local telephone exchange is and how many other businesses nearby are also switching. The earlier you get on the list, the more control you have over when it happens — rather than being rushed at the last minute.
What are the alternatives?
• Card payment machines (PDQ) and tills (EPOS)
New technology is already available to replace everything the old copper network provided: What you have now What it's being replaced with Landline phone lines (PSTN and ISDN) Internet-based phone systems (VoIP) Older broadband (ADSL and FTTC) Full-fibre broadband (FTTP) In plain terms: your phone calls move onto the internet (VoIP), and your broadband moves onto fibre-optic cables instead of copper (full fibre).
• Telecare and personal alarm services
Why is fibre broadband better?
• Metering equipment
Fibre-optic cables are thinner, lighter and far more durable than old copper cables, and they carry data at the speed of light — up to 100 times faster than ADSL. Busy periods don't slow things down the way they can with copper, which makes fibre a much better fit for using cloud-based tools, video calls, and streaming HD video without interruptions. Copper cables are also prone to problems: they can be affected by weather, wear out over time, and are sometimes targeted for cable theft. Fibre cables are made of glass, so none of these issues apply.
This isn't just about your office phone. If it runs over a copper line, it's affected — and that covers more equipment than most people realise. Common examples include: • Analogue phones and phone systems • Fax machines • Alarm systems and monitoring equipment • Lift emergency phones • Door entry systems
• Older broadband connections (ADSL and FTTC) If any of this equipment is still running over an old copper line, it will need to move onto a digital alternative before the switch-off reaches you.
31 January 2027 is only months away It might sound like a distant deadline, but 31 January 2027 is now only months away. Around 15 million business lines across the UK still need to be moved over, and that's a huge job for Openreach to manage. To keep things running as smoothly as possible, providers stopped selling new copper-based services back in 2023, and exchanges are being migrated over gradually — ISDN lines first, followed by broadband.
Why is an internet-based (VoIP) phone system better? With a VoIP phone system, your business phone number is no longer tied to a socket on the wall. Calls can be answered on different devices, in different locations, which is
especially useful if your business has more than one site or has staff working from home. Cloud-based telephone systems also don't need a complete phone system installed on the wall like traditional setups do. There's no bulky on-site hardware to fit, maintain or replace — everything runs through the cloud, which makes installation quicker and keeps ongoing maintenance to a minimum. These systems are also easy to scale up or down as your business changes, without the delays and costs of installing new physical lines.
How can OCIT help? OCIT has helped small and medium businesses, larger organisations, and newbuild developments prepare for the switch-off. OCIT is partnered with a range of trusted fibre providers, including the award-winning ITS, to deliver the right digital connection for your building. OCIT also hosts its own awardwinning cloud-based VoIP telephone system, so your new phone service is fully supported in-house rather than passed between different suppliers. OCIT manages the whole process from start to finish — choosing the right solution and provider for your business, arranging site surveys, and staying involved until everything is installed and working properly. This can include: • Audit of current systems: building a full picture of everything in your business that still runs over the old copper network, including hardware, software and processes. • A clear plan of action: agreeing what needs upgrading or replacing, and who is responsible for each step. • Managing the switch-over: OCIT deals with any third-party contractors involved, so you don't have to. • Testing: making sure every new system works exactly as your business needs before it goes live. • Training: helping your staff get comfortable using the new systems. The deadline may still feel some way off, but the businesses that plan early are the ones who get to choose their installation date — rather than having it chosen for them. Getting in touch with OCIT now is the simplest way to find out where your business stands.

Winners announced at National Innovation Challenge awards ceremony A glittering awards ceremony held in central London in June celebrated the talent of aspiring young innovators. Led by Harrow, Richmond and Uxbridge Colleges (HRUC) in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Industrial Liaison Program (MIT ILP), and with Amazon as the Platinum Sponsor, the National Innovation Challenge received submissions from students across the UK on the theme of Sustainability and AI. Held at the Institution of Engineering and Technology in London on June 25, among those attending the awards evening were BBC presenter and STEM ambassador Konnie Huq and Department for Education Senior Manager Girma Ejere. The shortlisted entrants represented the breadth of the UK, from London to Belfast, from Fife to Bridgend. With an exceptionally strong standard of entries, the judges faced a tough decision to choose the finalists. This year’s panel of independent judges included Amazon Senior Chief Engineer Thiloshini Ellary-Bachu, BT Sustainability Director Sarwar Khan, MIT ILP Director Steve Whitaker, The Education Space Chief Executive Iqbal Vaza, Pearson Vice President Helen Walker, and Director of One Care IT Pally Randhawa. Timothy, Ollie and Wojtek from St Bede’s Catholic High School in Ormskirk, Lancashire, were named the winners of the schools category. Their project, the DuoPod, aims to improve the quality of life for people with diabetes. The DuoPod automatically regulates blood sugar by predicting future highs or lows, helping

to keep levels stable without the need for manual monitoring. In the colleges category, it was Shlok, Xainaldo and Faithon from Uxbridge College, London, who came out on top. Their submission impressed the judges with their proposal for a smart road hump, named Road-IQ, which recycles the mechanical force created by vehicles into useable electricity. The winning teams will embark on a oncein-a-lifetime trip to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States later this year, where they will have the opportunity to collaborate with worldleading researchers. Keith Smith, CEO of HRUC, said: “We created these awards from a shared belief that young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but powerful innovators today. We were inspired by the creativity we saw in classrooms, workshops, and labs ideas with real potential to drive meaningful change, if only given the platform to shine. “I would like to say a huge well done to all our remarkable finalists and a big

thank you for all those that entered and showcased their own personal vision of a more sustainable future. “I would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our brilliant judges and our sponsors, whose support makes events like this possible.” Clive Hodge, Principal of Uxbridge College, said: “I’m delighted to see the team from Uxbridge College win the colleges category of the Challenge. The independent judges recognised the brilliance of Shlok, Xainaldo and Faithon’s Road-IQ project and its potential to make a real difference to the safety and sustainability of our roads. Thank you to all the entrants and congratulations to Uxbridge College and St Bede’s on their success.” Yaseen Akhtar, Managing Director of the West London Institute of Technology, HRUC, said: "The National Innovation Challenge is about identifying young people who can see problems differently and develop solutions with real world impact. On behalf of the organisers, I would like to congratulate the teams for their outstanding achievement."

Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce:
Never Slowing Down Summer has been a great time for the Chamber to reset and prepare for the second half of the year. However, it has not been as quiet as usual, with plenty happening behind the scenes even as the team carved out time to plan ahead. We have been busy launching our Hillingdon Business Awards, and look forward to announcing our new venue very soon.
The Exchange Exclusive insights for senior leaders
Summer School Series The results are in
The Exchange continues to give our invite only network of senior leaders direct access to the people shaping our region. In June we had a fantastic session with Helen Elsby, Chief Development Officer and Acting Chief Digital and Information Officer at Heathrow, who spoke about the airport's ongoing improvements, the third runway project, and what it takes to make decisions of that scale. We have one more Exchange coming up in November, held at the Battle of Britain Bunker, with Group Captain Lee Wales, Station Commander of RAF Northolt, joining us as guest speaker. This will be our final gathering with the peers who have joined us at The Exchange throughout the year.
Our Summer School Series has officially wrapped up, and it was a resounding success. Every participant rated the programme excellent, said they would recommend it to others, and reported real improvements in their confidence and skills for growing their business. Most have already put what they learned into action, or are in the process of doing so. Perhaps the clearest sign of its impact, 100 percent of respondents told us they want the programme to run again next year.

We are thrilled to have launched our new Women in Business Network, with a launch event on the 15th of September that set the tone perfectly. The event was fully booked with a waiting list, a clear sign of just how much demand there is for a space like this.
Across 8 weeks through July and August, businesses across Hillingdon invested in themselves, and it showed.
Coworking A space to focus, together In July we launched Coworking at the Chamber, and it has quickly become a firm favourite. It offers a quiet, productive space for anyone who usually works alone, or simply wants to get things done alongside
other people. Tea and coffee are available throughout the day, and both members and non members are welcome to come along. Netwalk - A different way to connect
Women in Business Network A wonderful launch
As summer winds down, we are excited to get back into our usual rhythm of events. We have roundtables lined up covering recruitment, and marketing and social media. Our annual AGM takes place at the end of September, and our regular morning and evening networking events continue throughout the autumn.
We are thrilled to have launched our new Women in Business Network, with a launch event on the 15th of September that set the tone perfectly. There was a real positive energy in the air, and it was a fantastic event to launch this wonderful network. The network supports women at every stage of their careers, whether entrepreneurs, business owners, or professionals in corporate roles, giving them room to connect and grow together. We are working closely with our women member team on what comes next.
In August we swapped our usual networking format for something a little different, a Netwalk around Ruislip Lido. It proved hugely popular, with over 50 people joining us for a walk in the fresh air. We ended at The Waters Edge pub, where we announced the opening of the Awards and raised a glass together.

the bigger picture
Hillingdon:
Cllr Steve Tuckwell Leader of Hillingdon Council
Growth that works for us There are moments when running a council has to be about more than managing the here and now. Of course, residents rightly expect us to get the basics right. Roads, parks, bins, housing, social care and the hundreds of other services people rely on everyday matter enormously. But leadership also means looking beyond the next budget, the next year or even the next election. It means asking a much bigger question: what sort of Hillingdon do we want to leave behind? That is what our new Growth Plan is about. Hillingdon has an extraordinary amount going for it. We are home to Heathrow Airport, Brunel University, Stockley Park and some remarkable businesses. The Elizabeth Line has transformed our connectivity. We have the UK's largest transport and logistics sector by economic output, a growing creative and media sector, emerging digital and technology industries and more than 14,000 businesses already calling Hillingdon home. And we are one of London's greenest boroughs, with more than 3,400 hectares of parks and open spaces. Put all of that together and the potential is enormous. But having those assets is not enough. For too long, Hillingdon has sometimes been a place people travel through, fly into or commute from. Investment happens around us, businesses arrive and new industries emerge. The question for me is whether growth simply happens to Hillingdon, or whether we shape it so that it works for Hillingdon. I want the latter.
26
That means attracting investment, certainly. But it also means making sure a young person growing up in Hayes, Uxbridge, Ruislip or West Drayton can see a route from education into a good career here. It means helping the person who has taken the risk of starting a small business in Hillingdon turn it into a successful larger one. And it means bringing business and education much closer together. We already have some fantastic foundations. Brunel University brings world-class research to our doorstep. We have some fantastic schools and academies, and Uxbridge College - part of Harrow, Richmond and Uxbridge Colleges - a major partner for Hillingdon Council in developing the skills and opportunities our residents and businesses need. And that education story is growing. Buckinghamshire New University has recently purchased the former Uxbridge

the bigger picture Library from the council and intends to create a new university campus right in the heart of Uxbridge High Street. I have already started conversations with the university about how we build on that presence. For me, this is exactly what the Growth Plan should be about. Not simply attracting investment into Hillingdon, but joining the dots between that investment, our town centres, our businesses, education and, above all, opportunities for our residents. Bringing universities, further education, employers and the council closer together means more opportunities for our young people, a stronger workforce for local employers and another reason for businesses to choose Hillingdon. There is already plenty to build on. Since 2013, Hillingdon has added more than 5,000 businesses. We have exciting creative businesses and film production in Hayes and Ruislip, global companies at Stockley Park, a growing technology and innovation base around Uxbridge and Brunel, and one of the most important transport and logistics economies anywhere in the country. Our Growth Plan is about joining those dots. We have identified three priorities: Innovate, Connect and Thrive. Innovate means backing the industries of tomorrow while helping established Hillingdon businesses modernise, grow and scale. Connect is about making sure our residents can access those opportunities - better skills, stronger links between employers and education, and better connections between the north and south of our borough. And Thrive recognises that growth isn't just about businesses and jobs. It is also about the places in which people live. Good homes, thriving high streets, attractive public spaces and communities where people are proud to live, work and raise their families. None of this means changing Hillingdon beyond recognition. Quite the opposite. Growth without thought can destroy the very things that made somewhere successful in the first place. I want us to grow while protecting and celebrating the identity of our communities, our heritage and our green spaces. Growth should strengthen Hillingdon, not dilute it.
There is another change I want to see. Councils can sometimes become very good at explaining why something cannot happen. I want Hillingdon to be an organisation that asks how we can make the right things happen. That means being ambitious for our borough. It means being open for business. And it means getting the Council, businesses, investors, education providers and our communities around the same table. My ambition is straightforward. Ten years from now, I want us to be able to look back and see more than a council that simply kept services running. I want to see businesses that started here and stayed here because Hillingdon gave them room to grow. Young people who built careers here because opportunity was on their doorstep. Town centres that found a new purpose. Investment that strengthened our communities. And a borough that remained unmistakably Hillingdon while becoming more prosperous and more confident about its place in London and beyond. None of that will happen by accident. We must make it happen. Hillingdon has spent generations being London's gateway to the world. Our Growth Plan is about making sure that global gateway now creates local opportunity. And, most importantly, making sure the people who benefit from Hillingdon's next chapter are the people who call Hillingdon home.
Amar Nota, CEO Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce, said: “This Growth Plan is exactly the kind of ambitious, long-term thinking the London Borough of Hillingdon needs. “It recognises that economic growth is not just about attracting investment, it's about creating opportunity for local people, supporting businesses to scale, developing future skills and building places where people want to live, work and invest. “Hillingdon is uniquely positioned to lead the way, and the Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce is proud to support a vision that ensures our global connectivity delivers real local opportunity.”

ask the expert
Commercial finance questions business owners often ask Commercial finance expert Darren Butcher, Director of BAT Financial Solutions, talks about accessing business finance, overcoming lender challenges and securing the right funding for growth Why should I speak to a commercial finance broker before approaching my bank? If you have a strong relationship with your bank or relationship manager, my advice is simple: speak to them first. They already understand you and your business, which can be a significant advantage. However, if you don't have that relationship, or you'd like an independent view of the market, a commercial finance broker can add real value. Unlike a bank, which can only offer its own products, an independent broker can access a wide range of lenders and funding solutions. More importantly, they will take the time to understand your objectives, structure the borrowing correctly and identify the lenders most likely to support your proposal. The right funding isn't always about finding the cheapest rate. It's about finding the lender and terms that best fit your business ambitions. My bank has declined my application, is that the end of the road? In most cases, no. One of the biggest misconceptions in commercial finance is that a decline from one lender means the proposal isn't fundable. Every lender has a different appetite for risk, different lending criteria and different security requirements. A proposal that doesn't fit one lender's profile may be exactly the sort of opportunity another lender is looking for. My role as a commercial finance broker is to understand the strengths of a proposal, identify the most appropriate lenders and present the opportunity in a way that clearly addresses their requirements.
A decline isn't necessarily the end of the journey. It may simply mean you haven't yet found the right lender. What types of finance can help a growing business? That depends on what you're trying to achieve. Business finance can be used for a wide range of purposes, including purchasing commercial property, machinery, equipment and vehicles. It can also help improve cash flow by releasing funds tied up in unpaid invoices, support stock purchases during periods of growth, or fund the acquisition of another business. There are now more funding options available to SMEs than ever before, but that can make the market difficult to navigate. The key is ensuring the finance solution supports your business objectives rather than becoming a constraint on future growth. How do lenders decide whether to lend? Whilst every lender has its own criteria, they are generally looking to answer four key questions: • Can you do it? • Do you have the experience, skills and track record to deliver the project or business plan? • Can you afford it? • Will the business generate sufficient income and cash flow to comfortably service the borrowing? • What happens if things don't go to plan? • What security or fall-back position exists if circumstances change? • How will the borrowing ultimately be repaid?
If the loan isn't being repaid on a standard capital and interest basis, what is the exit strategy? Understanding these questions before making an application can significantly improve the chances of success. What makes BAT Financial Solutions different? For me, commercial finance has never simply been about lending money. It's about understanding people, businesses and their ambitions. Having spent more than 35 years in financial services, including senior roles within high street banking, I've seen first-hand how lenders assess risk and why some applications succeed while others don't. Today, as an independent commercial finance broker, I combine that banking experience with access to a broad range of lenders across the market. This allows me to find solutions that may not be available through a single bank. I also believe finance should be explained in plain English. Whether I'm helping a first-time business owner, an established SME or an experienced property investor, my objective is always the same: to provide honest guidance, build long-term relationships and help clients secure the right funding for their needs. After all, successful funding isn't just about getting a loan approved. It's about putting the right finance in place to help a business grow and prosper.

From the Hillingdon Expo to building a local wellness network: By Dr Rakesh Jivan TaskDoctor
When I attended the Hillingdon Business Expo earlier this year to represent my private medical clinic, TaskDoctor, I hoped it would be an opportunity to raise awareness of the service and meet other local businesses. What I didn't anticipate was how much the event would influence my thinking about the way healthcare can connect with the wider community. The Expo definitely helped raise awareness of TaskDoctor and, importantly, generated some new patient bookings through my website. However, for me, one of the most valuable outcomes was the opportunity to meet a diverse range of local businesses and professionals offering services that could complement healthcare. Following the Expo, I made a conscious effort to follow up with some of the people I had met. Rather than simply exchanging business cards and moving on, I arranged a series of video calls to learn more about their services, their experiences and how they support people within the local community. In turn, I was able to explain more about TaskDoctor and the role of a private GP service. As these conversations developed, I began to notice a common theme: collaboration. We all have different areas of expertise, but none of us can provide everything an individual or family may need. There is real value in knowing what other trusted local services are available and being able
to signpost people towards appropriate support when it complements their needs. This led me to an idea: why not create a dedicated “Wellness & Social Care Hub” on the TaskDoctor website? The intention is to create a virtual community network showcasing local services that may complement healthcare, including dietetic and nutritional advice, wellbeing services, life coaching, counselling, social care, foot and ankle care, and other complementary services. The Hub is not intended to replace NHS or traditional healthcare services, nor is it about recommending a particular service simply because we have a connection. Rather, my vision is to help patients and their families become more aware of the resources available within their own community and, where appropriate, signpost them towards relevant local support. One particularly positive connection has been with Chiltern Wellbeing Foot & Ankle Clinic. We are exploring how TaskDoctor can support the clinic with prescribing and the management of patients who may have

more complex medical needs. This is still a work in progress as we develop appropriate referral pathways, but it is an exciting example of how professionals can work together around the needs of the individual. I have also been invited to contribute a medical blog to their monthly newsletter, which provides another opportunity to share useful health information with the local community. I would now like to build on these initial relationships by reaching out to other Hillingdon Chamber members and local organisations involved in health, social care and wellbeing. There are so many valuable services within our borough, and I believe that greater awareness and collaboration can benefit both businesses and, most importantly, the people we collectively serve. A special mention also goes to Amit Patel from Count Creation, who is my brand and web designer and is currently developing the new Wellness & Social Care Hub webpage. We hope to have the page live shortly. Looking back, the Hillingdon Expo has been much more than a networking event for me. It has encouraged me to think differently about TaskDoctor and its role within the community. Healthcare doesn't exist in isolation. By building relationships, sharing knowledge and supporting one another, we can create stronger connections between healthcare and the wider community — and ultimately help people access the support they need. www.taskdoctor.co.uk

BCC Economic Forecast:
Weak business investment hits growth outlook The latest British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) Economic Forecast suggests the outlook for the UK will remain uncertain. While the economy was more resilient in Q2 than expected, higher energy and business costs are likely to keep growth weak this year and next. The key points in the forecast are: • GDP in 2026 is expected to grow by 1.0% (compared with 0.9% in the previous forecast) then 1.0% in 2027, rising to 1.3% in 2028. • Faced with a raft of domestic cost pressures and global headwinds, business investment is now expected to fall by 0.2% this year, followed by a rise of 0.4% in 2027, and 1.2% in 2028. • Inflation is forecast to peak at 3.6% by the end of this year (3.8% in the previous forecast) before easing to 2.3% by Q4 2027. • Unemployment is forecast to be 5% by the end of 2026 and then peak at 5.4% in 2027. Youth unemployment is expected to reach a high of 17.6% next year. • The Middle East conflict and US tariffs mean exports are likely to only grow by 0.4% in 2026, improving to 1.3% in 2027. 30
UK economic outlook GDP is anticipated to grow by 1% in 2026, which is only marginally better than the BCC’s previous forecast (0.9% in the Q2 forecast). Despite severe global challenges, in particular higher oil prices, the UK economy was more resilient than expected in the first six months of this year. Within uncertainty about the course of conflict in the Middle East, GDP is expected to remain at 1% in 2027. Growth is forecast to pick up to 1.3% in 2028. GDP is boosted by private consumption for the forecast period, with investment making up a diminishing contribution, and net trade contributing negatively due to the export deficit. The economy continues to be weighted towards services industries, with growth in that sector 1.5% this year. In contrast, construction is expected to contract by 1.3% in 2026. Meanwhile, the forecast suggests manufacturing will perform better than expected this year overall, with grow of 1% (0.8% in the previous forecast).
Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce Business Magazine
Business investment will continue to struggle With firms facing high domestic cost pressures, the BCC is forecasting business investment to contract by 0.2% in 2026, before recovering to growth of 0.4% in 2027. The figure for this year is an upgrade on the previous estimate (-2.2% in the Q2 forecast), reflecting stronger ONS data in Q2. However, BCC surveys show SME sentiment has fallen to its lowest level since the pandemic, suggesting the forecast improvement is down to the volume of investment by larger firms.
Inflation pressures to remain stubborn CPI inflation is expected to stay above target until the end of the forecast period. After easing in spring and early summer this year, inflation is expected to peak at 3.6% in Q4 this year (compared with 3.8% in the previous forecast). Higher household energy costs because of the conflict in the Middle East continue to be the main drivers. There is also a risk from higher
economy food prices in the wake of this summer’s drought in parts of the UK. The forecast suggests the interest base rate will stay at 3.75% over the next two years, as the Bank of England looks to see inflation easing gradually without causing a wage price spiral. However, the combined possible impact of food inflation, high energy prices and the Middle East conflict, could lead to an interest rate rise.
Unemployment to rise next year While the labour market has proved more resilient than expected in recent months, unemployment is still expected to end 2026 at 5.0% (a downgrade from 5.2% in the previous forecast) and then reach 5.4% in 2027. Youth unemployment remains a real cause for concern for the UK economy. It is expected to be 16.6% by the end of the year (down from 16.9%), before peaking at 17.6% in 2027. Growth in average earnings is forecast to hold steady at 3.75% in 2026 and 2027, as firms face squeezed margins.
Exports to struggle amid global uncertainty UK exports are expected to grow by just 0.4% this year. While that is an upgrade on the previous BCC forecast (0.2%), reflecting some easing of Middle East tensions, the absence of a lasting peace deal means trade will remain challenging. The forecast suggests exports will grow by 1.3% in 2027, and 2.4% in 2028. Imports are anticipated to grow by 1.9% this year (compared with 1.4% in the last forecast), easing to 1.7% in 2027. Consequently, net-trade is expected to sit at -2.9% of GDP this year, and –3% in 2027.
David Bharier, Deputy Director Economics and Insights at the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “Our latest forecast paints an uncertain outlook for the UK economy. Businesses have absorbed another major geopolitical shock and shown real resilience. “But growth remains subdued, and rests on consumption, not investment. Net trade is also a drag in every single year of the forecast. “Our sentiment data bears this out. Just 17% of firms now say they are increasing investment, the lowest since the pandemic, citing labour costs and taxation as the main factors. A declining proportion of SME exporters are seeing increased overseas sales. “This is the result of a decade of rising costs. Our modelling shows domestic, policy-driven

business cost base has risen by more than 70 per cent since 2016 for a typical SME, even before Brexit trade friction and global shocks are factored in. “AI and exports could hand the UK a major double gain, but the general cost burden holding back SMEs also needs to be addressed. “The central task of the next Budget is to enable firms to invest, innovate, and trade. every measure needs to pass a growth delivery test. Does it visibly increase investment, exports, hiring or expansion? Until it does, don’t expect this pattern to break.” Read the full forecast

big interview
K4 Group is on target for vision of growth From providing security at Silverstone last summer to ensuring huge fireworks displays go ahead without a hitch, K4 Group ensures events run smoothly and safely. Group CEO Arsalan Khan talks to Sarah Dale about the company’s plans for growth including expanding the medical and training arms of the business.

big interview The leadership styles of Arsalan and Tamaryn Khan, who founded K4 Group in 2018, vary considerably, however, they are both laser-focused on growing the business. “I would say I am calm, composed and at times, very laid-back and relaxed when it comes to leadership and allow people to do what they feel fit,” explains Arsalan. “The team can make their own decisions and sometimes their own mistakes whilst Tami is very much tripping by KPI goals and firm targets.” The company started out as an events management and planning company providing security services to the public and private sectors. When Covid hit the UK and the first lockdown occurred in March 2020, all events stopped overnight, and Arsalan admits they considered closing the business. Instead, they pivoted their resources, upskilled their team, and provided Covid marshalls for the NHS, retail stores and local businesses to maintain social distancing. Events began to start up again and the security aspect of the business grew to cover a range of services, including manned/static guarding, front of house and concierge, canine security services, gatemen and traffic marshalls, key holding, mobile security patrols, and alarm response, as well as providing events consultancy and planning. They now provide alarm response to 700 properties. Next, they realised that it would be more beneficial for the company and clients if they brought the medical provision for events in-house and so K4 Medical was formed. They added a doctor and medic to the team, acquired Primary Ambulance Services, and started providing a range of courses from door supervisors to first response emergency training. On the events side, they have worked on some of the biggest events in the UK, including the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham (where they deployed 700 members of staff), the Queen’s funeral and
manning the queue to visit the late monarch when she was lying in state at Westminster Hall (providing 400 staff members a day), and tours for big names in the music industry. Last summer, they supported Silverstone by providing more than 80 staff per day for five days; they provided 70-plus staff plus medical support for Bonfire Night in November for a crowd of 8,000 people; and 80-plus staff spread across London embankment for the fireworks show on New Year’s Eve. “Our highlights of 2025 were attracting new clients while retaining existing clients and increasing our events hours,” he said. “Our vision for 2026 and beyond is to continue to deliver the best level of experience possible to the client and their customers; to grow the business across all its departments; increase our hours; increase staff retention; and our priority is staff training to ensure they have all the necessary tools to succeed. Our challenge is ensuring that we have quality over quantity to ensure we have the right calibre of staff for a specified role. To overcome this challenge, we have face-to-face integration with staff, we hold workshops and CPD days, and working alongside them allows us to note their strengths and weaknesses so we can support them better.” K4 Group, which is the parent company of K4 Security, K4 Medical, K4 Training and K4 Global, has its head office in Hounslow with
regional offices in Leeds, Peterborough and Cardiff and overseas offices in Pakistan and Turkey. They are a SIA-approved contractor which now employs 71 managers and 60 administrative staff members and a freelance team of between 4,500 and 5,000 people. Out of 7,000 security firms in the UK, about 700 are part of the approved contractors list for the Home Office including K4, a fact Arsalan is extremely proud of. “So 2026 is a big year for the Group to move forward on all fronts,” added Arsalan. “We’ve completed work with our mobile services division looking after thousands of properties across Greater London for keyholding and Emergency Alarm Response. “The Medical arm has grown with a new acquisition with Phoenix EMS, so we’re able to provide more services, more ambulances and a larger geographical area as Phoenix is based in Bournemouth. “The Training arm has always been strong with our online platform being at the forefront of delivering bespoke inductions and trainings, and we’ve done extensive amount of bespoke training for the companies from first aid to scenario-based training.” “Personally, one of my proudest achievements is how our team is a unit and the way we can deliver anything that our customers require 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We are there for not only our customers but anyone who needs us.”
Our challenge is ensuring that we have quality over quantity to ensure we have the right calibre of staff for a specified role. Advertorial
How you can bolster your contract resilience in uncertain times Well-drafted contracts are not just legal housekeeping. According to B P Collins’ corporate and commercial team, they are a practical tool for protecting margin, continuity of supply and customer relationships. In this article, it explores key areas that should be considered. Do not assume force majeure covers every disruption Businesses should check whether their clauses cover the risks most relevant to their operations. Equally important is what the clause does not cover. General economic hardship, increased costs or reduced profitability will not usually be enough unless the drafting expressly says so. The clause should also set out clear notice requirements, mitigation obligations and the consequences of a prolonged event. These points should be clear before a crisis arises.
Build in flexibility around pricing, tariffs and inflation Long-term fixed pricing can become commercially unsustainable where costs rise significantly. Suppliers may want a mechanism allowing prices to increase by reference to a suitable index, changes in input costs, exchange rates, duties or tariffs. Customers, however, will usually want safeguards: notice periods, evidence of the cost increase, caps on increases, rights to challenge or audit, and possibly the benefit of downward price movements if costs fall. The key is to avoid vague wording.
Sanctions and trade compliance are contractual risks Sanctions and trade restrictions can make performance unlawful or commercially impossible with little warning. Businesses trading internationally, dealing with high-risk jurisdictions, or supplying controlled goods should ensure their contracts include modern sanctions protections. This is particularly important where supply chains involve multiple intermediaries. A business may have no direct relationship with a sanctioned entity but could still be exposed through its suppliers, customers, shipping routes, financing arrangements or ultimate end users.
Know when you can exit Termination rights should be reviewed carefully. Customers may want termination for convenience, allowing them to exit if requirements change or supply becomes unreliable. Suppliers may want minimum terms, notice periods and compensation for set-up costs, committed stock or subcontractor exposure.
Where shortages are foreseeable, allocation of supply clauses can be valuable. They can determine whether the customer receives priority supply, a fixed allocation, or a pro rata share of available stock. These clauses should be aligned with force majeure provisions so that the contract does not say one thing about shortages and another about relief from performance.
Termination for breach should also be practical. If payment failure, repeated delays, loss of key licences, change of control or regulatory non-compliance would create commercial risk, the contract should say so.
Practical next steps
Businesses should also be aware that suppliers’ rights to terminate for customer insolvency are restricted by legislation in certain supply contracts. This makes it important for suppliers to consider earlier warning triggers, such as deteriorating financial position, failure to pay, credit limit concerns or requests for revised payment terms before formal insolvency occurs.
For further advice and information, please contact B P Collins’ corporate and commercial team at enquiries@bpcollins.co.uk or call 01753 889995.
Business continuity and supply allocation For business-critical supplies, consider whether the supplier must maintain and test a business continuity plan, hold minimum stock, use alternative sites, maintain backup systems, notify disruptions quickly and provide regular updates. Customers may also want rights to review those plans or require remedial action.
Owner-managers and directors should identify their most business-critical contracts and review whether they adequately deal with all of the above.

New Women in Business network is making an impact in Hillingdon
Marion Judd
Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce is launching its new Women in Business (WIB) network. Meet the women making an impact: Marion Judd, founder of For Haven Sake; Hulya Erbeyli, a leadership and business coach; and Karishma Motiram, owner of The Thought Box, a Certified Mental Fitness Coach and specialist in mindset. 36
Hulya Erbeyli
Who you are and what do you do? Marion: After years in our family business, I moved into wellbeing and personal development. I work with children and adults, helping them turn down the emotional charge around overwhelm, fear, phobias and trauma, to feel calmer, confident and in control. I’m passionate about helping people create their safe haven within, to return to when life feels tough. Hulya: I’m a leadership and business coach working with women building successful businesses and careers on their own terms. My work intersects business, leadership and personal growth, helping women navigate challenges. Karishma: I work with parents and professionals to identify thinking patterns that influence confidence, decisions, relationships and performance.

Karishma Motiram
Tell us more about the WIB network launching in September Marion: WIB is about bringing women across Hillingdon together to make genuine connections, share knowledge, create opportunities and back one another. Our vision is to build a strong member-led community of women across Hillingdon who can collectively make a bigger impact for themselves, their businesses, and wider community. Hulya: The quarterly events bring women from across Hillingdon’s business community to connect, share experiences, collaborate, and learn. It is open to women at every stage, whether they are a leader, manager or building a career. I’d love to see it grow into a strong community shaped by the women who are part of it. Karishma: The WIB network gives women knowledge, relationships and support
making an impact to grow with confidence. Members can access to business development experts, alongside human and soft skills specialists that enable successful leadership. Together, this creates a truly 360° support network that recognises successful businesses are built not only through what we know, but through how we think, lead, connect and grow.
Why are you passionate about WIB? Marion: I don’t want women fighting for one seat at the table. I want to get rid of the table and stand together. There are so many opportunities, and we can create more by working together rather than competing for the same space. We want to encourage women to support themselves, each other, open doors, and create opportunities together. If the venues become too small, we'll go bigger. That’s what “Rise Together” means to me, no hierarchy, no glass ceiling and no woman left behind. Hulya: I work with women and see their ambition and the pressure to fit into existing ideas of what success and leadership should look like. I believe women can build successful, financially strong businesses on their own terms. Karishma: My passion for WIB comes from personal experience. I became a mother while working in a demanding, high-profile role, balancing career and family which was more challenging than anticipated. Learning to manage my thinking, recognise the support I needed and build a successful business transformed my experience professionally, and personally. I know firsthand how powerful the right knowledge, support and connections can be, and I want to create that opportunity for others.
How do you feel about launching the WIB network? Marion: I’m excited and incredibly proud. There’s something special about creating
something. I want women to walk into the room as they are, feel welcome, and think, “These are my people.” I want them to leave feeling inspired, challenged and thinking if only we dared. There are many incredible women doing amazing things across Hillingdon. If we can bring those different pockets together, imagine what we could create. If you are a woman reading this, I want you to come and help us shape what WIB becomes. Karishma: I feel incredibly lucky to be part of the foundation of this network because I can already see its power and potential.
Why is the network needed? Marion: I think women benefit from having a strong community around them. It is not exclusive to members; it’s open to nonmembers too. You don’t have to own a business or be at the top to belong in WIB. I worked in male-dominated environments, and I think that’s exactly why I want this to feel genuinely open and inclusive for all women.
Hulya: For most of my career, I was
surrounded by men and often the only woman in the boardroom. I would have valued having more women around me. When women succeed and have more influence, the impact goes beyond business, it reaches their families, communities and future generations. It reflects the Chamber’s genuine commitment to creating a sustainable network where women can develop their business skills in a safe environment. Women are playing an increasingly important role in our local business community, and I believe this network can give them the support, connections and opportunities to thrive.
How do you feel about being part of Making an Impact in Hillingdon? Marion: Big things are happening for women in Hillingdon. Women are leading businesses, influencing major organisations like Heathrow, stepping into local leadership and doing incredible work across charities and communities. I want women and girls in Hillingdon to see women leading everywhere. The women of Hillingdon are ready. Connect. Create. Collaborate and Rise Together.
WIB is about bringing women across Hillingdon together to make genuine connections, share knowledge, create opportunities and back one another. Our vision is to build a strong member-led community of women across Hillingdon who can collectively make a bigger impact for themselves, their businesses, and wider community. Bringing Hillingdon together this Christmas
Connect, celebrate and strengthen business relationships this festive season There is something special about Christmas in Hillingdon. As festive lights begin to illuminate town centres, businesses prepare for their busiest season, and communities come together to celebrate another year of achievement, the festive period provides the perfect opportunity to pause and reflect. For businesses across the borough, Christmas is much more than a date in the calendar. It is a chance to recognise the people who have contributed to success throughout the year, thank valued clients and partners, and strengthen the relationships that help organisations thrive.
everything from intimate private dining experiences to large-scale corporate celebrations. From stylish hotels and restaurants to unique event spaces, businesses have a wealth of options available when planning their festive gatherings.
Party Season is coming
Choosing local venues and suppliers not only helps create memorable experiences but also supports the wider business community. Every Christmas event booked with a local restaurant, hotel, caterer, entertainment provider or events company helps sustain jobs and contributes to the economic vitality of the borough. At a time when many businesses continue to navigate economic pressures, supporting local enterprises can make a meaningful difference.
Whether it's a formal Christmas party, a team lunch, an end-of-year awards event or an informal gathering with customers and colleagues, festive celebrations play an important role in bringing people together. In today's working environment, where many teams operate across multiple locations or continue to embrace flexible working arrangements, face-to-face interaction is more valuable than ever. Shared experiences help build stronger relationships, boost morale and create a sense of belonging within organisations. For employers, festive events can also be a powerful way to show appreciation. Employees who feel recognised and valued are more likely to be engaged, motivated and committed to their organisation's future success. Taking time to celebrate achievements together helps create positive workplace cultures and reinforces the importance of teamwork. Christmas is also a vital period for Hillingdon's hospitality, leisure and events sectors. The borough is home to a diverse range of venues capable of hosting

Support local
The festive season also presents valuable opportunities for networking. Christmas receptions, business breakfasts and seasonal Chamber events provide the ideal environment for making new connections, strengthening existing partnerships and exploring opportunities for collaboration in the year ahead. Conversations that begin over festive refreshments can often lead to productive business relationships long after the decorations have been packed away. For members of Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce, Christmas is an opportunity to celebrate not only individual business

achievements but also the strength of the local business community as a whole. Hillingdon continues to be home to a diverse and resilient business landscape, spanning sectors including aviation, logistics, hospitality, professional services, retail and technology. The success of the borough is built on the commitment, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit of its businesses and their people. Looking ahead As 2026 draws to a close, many organisations will be looking ahead to new opportunities, ambitions and goals for the coming year. Before planning for the future, however, it is important to take a moment to recognise how far teams have come and the contributions that have made success possible. After all, Christmas is about bringing people together, and few places do that better than Hillingdon's vibrant and supportive business community.

Council to widen support for pupils with SEND Therapy services for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) have been expanded to help schools to meet pupils' needs earlier.
Council helps to deliver new home for Uxbridge Post Office Two temporary Post Office counters have opened in the Civic Centre in Uxbridge, after Hillingdon Council stepped in to ensure the continuation of the vital service following the closure of the High Street branch in May. The council has worked very closely alongside Post Office Ltd since TG Jones announced the previous branch would close, exploring potential options for a temporary location while a permanent home is sought.
The council's Cabinet to commission therapy services from an external provider to create 21 new roles, giving schools increased access to shared speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, educational psychologists and specialist teachers. The new initiative is part of the Experts at Hand programme, as part of nationwide SEND reforms. The additional expertise will help schools identify emerging needs and provide support earlier, as well as encouraging greater partnership working across education, health and care. Complementing the council’s existing SEND services, the new support will help schools build confidence and expertise in meeting a wider range of needs, enabling more children to thrive in mainstream learning. By improving the early identification of needs, the council anticipates that more children will receive the right support at the earliest opportunity, reducing the need for
Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) where needs can be effectively met through targeted intervention, while ensuring those who do require statutory support are identified sooner. Cllr Susan O'Brien, Hillingdon Council's Cabinet Member for Adults, Children, Health and Care, said: "We want every child in Hillingdon to have the opportunity to achieve their potential and receive the support they need to succeed. “This is an opportunity to enhance the support we offer our children and young people with SEND by giving schools direct access to a pool of professionals and helping staff identify and respond to needs earlier. "This will create an even more inclusive education system, improve outcomes for children and families and ensure that help is available when and where it is needed most." Experts at Hand is grant funded through the Department for Education.
The counters are located at the top of the stairs and ramp, near the entrance to Uxbridge Library. They will be open to the public from 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 1pm on Saturdays, and offer 95 per cent of the services available at any permanent post office. The Post Office will look to open a permanent branch at a new location later this year. Cllr Steve Tuckwell, Leader of Hillingdon Council, said: “We know thousands of residents relied on Uxbridge Post Office, so it was only right that we take decisive action. “As soon as we were informed that the Uxbridge Branch was closing, we contacted the Post Office and offered the Civic Centre as a temporary location.” David Hempstead, Post Office Retail Change Lead, said: “Post Office and Hillingdon Council have worked closely together to find a way to restore a muchneeded Uxbridge Post Office in the heart of the town. We’re both delighted that we have found a way to re-open the branch in a very convenient location for residents, businesses and shoppers. We are very grateful for the space at the Civic Centre.”

Sue McGlynn HAPPY LITTLE HABITS
In a few words tell us a bit about your business?
What do you like most about working as a start-up?
enjoyed working through them and finding solutions as the business has developed.
Happy Little Habits is a wellbeing business helping people create positive change in their lives through energy healing, sound therapy, coaching and simple habits that support emotional wellbeing and self-care.
What I enjoy most about being a start-up is having the freedom to shape the business around my own vision. I enjoy being creative, developing new ideas and seeing them become part of Happy Little Habits.
I’ve been fortunate that, although there have been challenges, I’ve been able to keep moving the business forward.
What gives your business ‘the x-factor’?
I’ve also really enjoyed developing my business skills along the way, from building my brand and webpage to creating marketing and developing new services and workshops. Being able to bring all of these elements together and see the business evolve is something I’m very proud of.
Over the next five years, I’d love Happy Little Habits to reach people of different ages and at different stages of life. I want to continue developing meaningful programmes and workshops, including the fertility support I’ve recently developed, while continuing to offer the one-to-one sessions I love so much.
What gives Happy Little Habits its x-factor is that no two sessions are the same. Every session is uniquely tailored, because every person is different, with their own experiences, needs and aspirations. I see myself as a guide, using energy, sound therapy and a variety of tools and techniques to help people gain clarity, quieten the noise and tap into their own wisdom. Ultimately, the person coming to me holds the key to their own healing. My role is to help them reconnect with themselves, understand their reactions and recognise patterns that may be holding them back, so they can discover what feels right for them and trust their own inner knowing. What motivated you to set up in business? My motivation for starting Happy Little Habits was very personal. After experiencing loss and seeing people close to me go through illness, I found myself looking into different approaches that could help bring healing and balance. I started exploring these approaches for myself and then trained in them. What began as something personal became something I wanted to share with other people. I realised I could take what had helped me and create a business around it, opening it up to people beyond my own family and friends. That was the beginning of Happy Little Habits.
What has been your greatest business success to date? My greatest business success to date is building Happy Little Habits from an idea into a business. I’m proud of how much I’ve created from the brand and webpage to my marketing, services and workshops.
In terms of business achievements, where do you want to be within the next 5 years?
I’d love to expand into hosting retreats and creating more opportunities for people to come together, connect and feel supported. Supporting my local community is something I really enjoy, and I’d love to continue building a welcoming community around Happy Little Habits.
I’m also proud of the trust I’ve built with the people I work with. Knowing that someone has chosen to spend their time with me and that my work has helped them feel calmer, clearer or more connected to themselves is incredibly rewarding.
What would be your top tip to someone thinking of starting up their own business?
For me, one of the greatest measures of success is the reviews and feedback I receive. Knowing that someone has taken the time to share how they felt after working with me, or what they took away from a session, means a great deal to me. It reminds me why I started Happy Little Habits in the first place.
You may know exactly what you want your business to be, but there will be so many other parts of running a business that you need to understand along the way. I’ve taught myself a lot, asked questions when I didn’t know something and worked things out as I’ve gone along.
What has been your lowest moment? I wouldn’t say I’ve had a particular lowest moment in business so far. There have certainly been challenges, but I’ve generally
My advice would be to be prepared to learn and, most importantly, to take action. An idea is only an idea until you take that first step towards making it a reality.
You don’t need to know everything before you start. Take that first step, be willing to learn, ask for help when you need it and keep moving forward. You’ll learn so much along the way.

What was your first job and what was the pay packet?
If you could do another job, what would it be?
I worked as a healthcare assistant in the Pharmacy department at Boots the Chemist, Watford at the age of 15. My salary was £3.25/hr.
I would be a psychologist. I have always been fascinated by people, what shapes us, why we behave the way we do and what influences how we navigate life and its challenges.
What do you always carry with you to work? I carry my large work briefcase which holds my laptop, notebook, work phone, patient notes and folders as well as an additional large tote bag with my clinical essentials.
What is the biggest challenge facing your business? Our biggest challenge is reaching those who need Menopause support while breaking through stigma, misconceptions and silence, and building awareness of the importance of evidence-based Menopause education.
If you were Prime Minister, what one thing would you change to help business? I would simplify business regulation and reduce administrative burdens, giving small businesses more time and resources to focus on growth, innovation and creating jobs.
What can you see from your office window? From my home office, I can see my driveway which currently has the most beautiful colourful hydrangeas in bloom.

Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce Business Magazine
As a businessperson, what are your three main qualities? Empathetic, determined and visionary. I genuinely care about people, have the resilience to keep moving forward and the ambition to turn ideas into meaningful, lasting change.
What was your biggest mistake in business? I have learned that you cannot be everything to everyone. Staying true to your values and vision creates a stronger, more authentic business and allows you to grow with purpose.
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs? Believe in your vision, but do not be afraid to evolve. Surround yourself with good people, learn from mistakes, stay true to your values and never underestimate what you are capable of.
Who do you most admire in business? I admire entrepreneurs who build successful businesses with purpose particularly those who remain authentic, resilient and committed to making a positive difference, rather than measuring success purely by financial growth.
