Toward this end, the department is committed to providing a comprehensive intercollegiate athletic program for men and women, which promotes the academic, physical, social, psychological, and total development of the student-athlete. Further, the department is committed to working collaboratively with other constituents of the college to ensure the production of competent, contributing graduates who are capable of making the transition from university life into the workplace and today’s multicultural society. John Brown was an outstanding Coach and Athletic Director at Benedict College from 1951 to 1983. Mr. Brown coached football, baseball and basketball. His basketball teams brought Benedict more national recognition than any other sport in the College’s history. In Coach Brown’s 17 years as Head Basketball Coach, the Tigers compiled a 271-171 record and from 1956 to 1963, the Tigers went undefeated at home under Brown’s guidance. The 1960-61 squad was the nation’s highest-scoring small college basketball team, averaging 101.2 points per game. Coach Brown’s tenure was the longest of any coach in Benedict’s history. This award is given to the Most Outstanding Student-Athlete each year at the Athletic Banquet.

Lucius F. Clark resurrected the Benedict College golf program and is primarily responsible for the success and growth the program has achieved today. Coach Clark’s teaching style reflected the following: service-leadership, responsibility, respect for others, sportsmanship and integrity. These are the same values that the recipients have demonstrated. The Lucius F. Clark Memorial Best All-Around Champions of Character Student-Athlete Award is given to any student-athlete who has shown outstanding character and has brought national exposure to the college and athletic program. The recipient also has provided leadership within their sport area, and has shown dedication to help other student-athletes grow. The award is presented annually at the Athletic Banquet.

Jimmy Green introduced himself to Benedict College football in 1957, as a sensational freshman quarterback and tailback, leading the Tigers to a 6-4 record and top place in total offense (passing and rushing) among teams in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Mr. Green graduated in 1962 and was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams of the National Football League, but accepted a larger bonus from the Montreal Allouetes of the Canadian Football League. His promising career was cut short due to a severe knee injury. The Jimmy Green Memorial Inspirational Athlete Award is given to any student-athlete who has been confronted with life-altering experiences and has utilized perseverance, dedication, and determination to overcome the event. This award is presented in recognition of Mr. Green’s dedication and commitment to Benedict College.

The David H. Swinton Power For Good Award was started in 2017 to honor retiring President Dr. David H. Swinton, who served as Benedict’s president for 23 years, the longest serving president in the school’s history. For Swinton, Benedict College is a place where “Learning to Be the Best: A Power for Good Into the 21st Century” is more than a slogan—it characterizes his commitment to quality and continuous improvement of Benedict College and its surrounding community. The award is presented to a student-athlete who represents exemplary traits of character, academics and community service and will work to make the world a better place after leaving Benedict.

u The men’s track & field team finished second at the SIAC Championship. u The men captured 10 All-SIAC honors. Jonhoi Clarke was first team in the shot put and second team in the discus. Also named to the first team were Lennox Williams in the 400 meters, Kaleb Daniels in the triple jump, and Casser Middleton in the hammer throw. u Williams and Daniels will compete in the NCAA Championships. u The Tigers are ranked 8th in the NCAA South Region.
