Teen programs take a break during school holidays

Purple Day, held on 26 March, is a global event dedicated to raising awareness about epilepsy—one of the most common neurological conditions worldwide. Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain characterised by a tendency to have recurrent, unprovoked seizures. These seizures occur when there is a sudden surge of abnormal electrical activity in the brain, and they can present in many ways: from brief lapses in awareness to muscle jerks, unusual sensations, or full-body convulsions.

Purple Day encourages communities to learn that epilepsy is highly treatable, with around 70% of people able to achieve seizure control through medication. For others, additional therapies or surgery may help. The day also highlights the importance of reducing stigma, as misconceptions still affect how people with epilepsy are treated at school, at work, and in the community. By starting conversations and wearing purple, we help create understanding, safety, and support for everyone affected.

DID YOU KNOW?

Around 50 million people worldwide have epilepsy, making it one of the most common neurological diseases globally.

Each month, Teen Recommended Reads explores a central theme or topic of discussion. Teens are encouraged to find an age-appropriate novel that shares this topic and discuss how this novel relates to the theme and general questions. In recognition of Purple Day, for this month's Teen Recommended Reads we encourage teens to read a book which includes a theme of “Epilepsy”. Teen Recommended Reads

We recommend Topic: Epilepsy
