Welcome everyone to the 42nd Annual Bemidji Jaycees Home, Sport & Travel Show!
F
or the eighth straight year, we are returning to the Sanford Center, where we have enjoyed great success from a wonderful partnership. When you come to the show, be sure to write your name, number and address on your admission ticket and enter to win one of our big door prizes at the Jaycee booth. Pre-sale tickets are on sale now at the Sanford Center ticket office, including $10 weekend passes. Remember to check out the great lineup of seminars happening in the Lakeside Meeting Room on Saturday and bring the kids on Sunday afternoon for a free kids workshop, thanks to the Home Depot. This year’s show is very exciting. We have more than 100 vendors (and counting, as we’ll be adding vendors right up until the start of the show) on display this year. We have many new businesses and organizations, all
very eager to share what they do and show off what is new in their world. Not only would we like to extend our heartfelt thanks to those who will be on display this weekend, but also to the many “behind-the- scenes” folks who are crucial to putting on this massive upbringing. Our gratitude cannot be put into words. Without them, there would be no show to host. Again, we have had several members of the business community step up to help sponsor the show. Likely the most fulfilling aspect for any Bemidji Jaycee is the opportunity to give back to the community. As
Jaycees, we are always on the lookout for new and exciting ways to gain leadership skills, but we also strive to leave our community a better place than it was the day before. With a portion of the proceeds from the Bemidji Jaycees Home, Sport & Travel Show, we are able to donate directly back to the community and area organizations. We also put on several events from which we donate our proceeds. In a typical year, we donate tens of thousands of dollars to dozens of local organizations! Your support is what allows us to successfully continue what we do — providing leadership training opportunities to young adults and donating our proceeds back to worthy charities. If you are 18- 40, we encourage you to join us and become a part of the finest young person’s organization in the world! We need to thank those Jaycee members who have helped out and
to our committee for all of their help planning the show! A special thank you Bemidji Jaycee Ashley Johnson, who helped put together an all-star cast of seminar speakers. This humongous task has helped us to maintain our laser-like focus on making this the greatest show on this side of the Mississippi! And the other side, too. T
he Bemidji Jaycees offer the best opportunities for individual development, career advancement, networking and community action by creating positive energy for positive results. The Jaycees provide people ages 18-40 opportunities for personal and leadership development through community service, individual development programs and networking. The Bemidji Jaycees Chapter is a member of the Minnesota Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) and the United States Junior Chamber. Locally, the Bemidji Jaycees host a number of community events beyond the Home, Sport & Travel Show, including the Water Carnival, Brrrmidji Plunge and First City of Lights Festival. The Jaycees also run numerous youth activities such as
Pitch, Hit & Run baseball skills competition and the Annual New Year’s Eve Bash. Throughout the years, the Jaycees have provided financial support to several organizations in our local community, including the Bemidji Fire Department, several youth sporting organizations, 4-H clubs, Beltrami County Sheriff’s Department, Vocalmotive, the Babe City Rollers roller derby team, Bemidji Community Food Shelf, Habitat for Humanity, Bemidji Community Soup Kitchen, Boys & Girls Club of the Bemidji Area and the United Way of Bemidji just to name a few. Bemidji Junior Jaycees create positive change The Junior Jaycee program is a leadership organization for young people between the ages of 7 and 17 and is modeled after the Bemidji Jaycees. This program intends to provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change. We are working diligently to teach our future leaders to become active citizens through volunteering within the community, leading projects and helping others. Even though this program has only been in the area for a short time, we are jumping right in and are hard at work on our first excit-ing projects. We are making plans to assist the adult Jaycees with many community projects including Pitch, Hit and Run (a baseball competition for area youth) and children’s events at the annual Water Carnival. We are also involved in several volunteer projects within the community and beginning to set up important and stimulating training in areas of personal development. Consider joining the Bemidji Junior Jaycees as a way to build confidence, learn valuable skills and make friends. The United States Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) gives young people between the ages of 18 and 40 the tools they need to build bridges of success for themselves in the areas of business development, management skills, individual training, community service and international connections. The U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit corporation established in 1920 to provide opportunities for young men to develop personal and leadership skills through service to others. The Jaycees later expanded to include women, reflecting the growing influence and leadership of women in America. For the past 100 years, Jaycees have been a force for good in America and around the world. Jaycees helped establish the Air Mail services in America with Jaycees Charles Lindbergh and have raised millions of dollars for causes such as the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the March of Dimes. They have built parks, playgounds, hospitals, ball fields and housing for the elderly, while conducting service and support programs for thousands of communities. Jaycees can be found in all walks of life: governmental leaders such as Presidents Bill Clinton and Gerald Ford; business tycoons such as Domino’s Pizza mogul Tom Monaghan; registered nurse and former Miss America Kaye Lani Rae Rafko-Wilson; and sports heroes such as basketball great Larry Bird. Name the field, and Jaycees can be found at the forefront. With the focus of the nation on volunteerism, from the smallest towns to the largest cities, the Jaycees are enlarging areas of opportunity for young people.
