The six candidates invited to participate are: incumbent Mayor Ernest D. Davis; former Mayor Clinton I. LeadingAge has selected Paula Ress from Wartburg in Mt. Vernon, NY as a member of its 2016 Leadership Academy program. Ms. Ress joined the Wartburg family in 2004 as the Nursing Home Administrator and was recently promoted to Vice President. This past year, Ms. Ress has led the development of a short term rehabilitation wing in the skilled nursing facility for complex medical conditions such as cardiac and cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation therapies. At the same time, she is overseeing the addition of an outpatient rehabilitation facility scheduled to open in Wartburg’s state-of-the-art freestanding Rehabilitation Center in Fall 2015. During her tenure at Wartburg, Ms. Ress has also led the team that has ensured each patient in Wartburg’s Rehabilitation Center, opened in 2013, maximizes their recovery with innovative therapies and a highly-skilled staff. The Foster Grandparent Program of Elmsfordbased Westchester Community Opportunity Program, Inc. is expanding its outreach efforts and is interested in attracting additional participants. This program provides valuable assistance to children with special and exceptional needs in an academic setting. The Foster Grandparents serve one-on-one as tutors and mentors to young people throughout Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Sullivan, Ulster and Orange counties. This program is funded primarily by the Corporation for National and Community Service. Additional funding is provided by the New York State Office for Aging and Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services. The Foster Grandparents are low-income senior citizens who must be a minimum of 55 years of age. They serve from 15 to 35 hours weekly and receive a tax-free hourly stipend as well as 30 paid vacation days, 12 paid sick days and 5 paid inclement weather days.
Additionally, they are provided mileage reimbursement, liability insurance and an annual Recognition Luncheon honoring their service to the community. Currently WestCOP’s Foster Grandparent program has more than 200 seniors serving hundreds of children in numerous Head Start centers, elementary schools and day care centers throughout many different cities and towns. Nationally there are nearly 30,000 Foster Grandparents serving in 341 local projects. These participants provide service to more than 284,000 children with special and exceptional needs. The mission of the Corporation for National and Community Service is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. Astorino seeks Senior Hall of Fame nominations
Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino is inviting residents to submit a nomination to the Westchester Senior Citizens Hall of Fame, now in its 33rd year. “The Hall of Fame is a special tradition that honors seniors who have given their time and energy to improve the quality of life in their communities or the county at large” Astorino said. “Don’t miss this great opportunity to shine a light on people who merit special recognition for their contributions.” Those selected will be inducted into the Senior Hall of Fame at a festive luncheon on Friday, December 4 in the Grand Ballroom of the Westchester Marriott Hotel. Nominations are due by September 25 and may be obtained online at westchestergov.com/seniors. To be nominated, a person must: • Be at least 60 years old and live in Westchester • Have made significant contributions to improve life in the county • Be an outstanding leader or advocate • Have done professional work that reflects innovative solutions to fulfill unmet community needs (if nomination is based on paid professional work) • Not be a past Hall of Fame inductee (see list of former inductees at westchestergov.com/seniors).

Why should I spend money hiring attorneys to do asset protection planning for me and my loved ones? Currently, the monthly cost for nursing home care in New York ranges between $10,000-$15,000, and properly certified home health attendants (nurse aides) can cost as much or more for round- the-clock home care. Statistically, it is likely that most people will need either or both of these care options as they grow older. It is critical that you plan appropriately to best minimize the strain that elder care costs may have on your estate, and to help put you in the best position possible to qualify for benefits that are largely covered by the government, under Medicare or Medicaid.
